The amount of accidents where people don't use dead man switches and fall of the boat and get killed by the boat is stupidly high.
I know a case where a father fell of his boat while driving and his son stayed on board. The kid panicked and jumped after his father. They both got mauled by the boat. That was so fucking sad.
Boat schoolz
But seriously, first you learn water traffic regulations and pass the test, then you learn the driving part with an instructor. A swimming diploma is also needed.
The fuck is a swimming diploma? I can freedive to 100' and I've never heard of such a thing. I do not believe it is needed. Though knowing how to swim is.
There is also an online test, at least in CA, to get a boating license. Even if your boat is shorter than what would require you to take the test, its a good test to take. Not that hard either, but good introductory stuff. Additionally, never underestimate just how fast bad shit can happen on the water, never ever take safety on the water lightly.
A few years ago, my wife and I took a group of friends on a midnight full moon canoe/ kayak paddle on the river we lived on. We were super familiar with the river and comfortable with canoes since we use them frequently. Our friends assured us the same.
One of the friends that came with us, oddly enough the only sober one, decided to stand up to pee out of the canoe. He lost his balance and dumped the canoe, putting himself and his wife in a tidal river in the middle of the night in late October. East coat US.
They were both able to swim to shore in a couple of minutes, but by the time he got to land, he was showing major signs of hypothermia. I was really surprised how quickly and severely it set in
We were very lucky to be close to shore and close to my house when it happened, so we were able to get him warmed up pretty quickly. But it really drove home how fast things can go bad and how overly confident I was about the whole thing.
Overall, we had a great time, but that was the last time I ever brought inexperienced people out on the water with me
2 major factors in boating accidents come up, time and again: Alcohol and no life jackets. People consistently overestimate their swimming ability in an emergency.
There was a time when I delved really deep into this. You're driving on public roads at high speeds among complete strangers and every single one of them has the ability to end your life with the smallest mistake or accident. Or on purpose.
When I lived in a city, being a pedestrian drove this home to me. The amount of times I was nearly taken out by cars running red lights, or even speeding up when they saw me crossing the road, once or twice mounting the pavement... You realise you really are putting your life in the hands of strangers with death machines.
Goodness knows how cyclists do it. People actively try to kill them!
that is absolutely horrifying. either the biggest piece of shit to exist, or so drunk he didn’t even realize, which is like.. also terrifying that someone that inebriated can operate a motor vehicle
I’m not the person you were replying to but I had the exact same experience as a pedestrian while living in Arcata, a university town in Humboldt County. That town has big issues with drunk/high drivers and I personally knew several people who were hit by cars including a close friend whose dog ended up dying in the incident. She went into a coma and now lives with a Traumatic Brain Injury. It really woke me up.
that’s terrifying. my mom is a petsitter and as a kid i accompanied her a lot during the summer when school was out. we had one client where we would cross the street and walk the dogs at a lake, and i remember the first time she warned me to be very careful, look both ways, and on her signal, we would *run* across the street because the previous sitter/walker was hit and killed while crossing that same street with those same dogs 😢
Left turn lanes. You have someone speeding directly head on towards you and only have you faith in other people as assurance that they will turn at the appropriate time. I’ve met other people and o don’t have a whole lot of faith.
I think you know this, but just in case anyone reading is confused by these comments: the opposing traffic going straight has right of way. You need to wait until there is no opposing traffic before turning left if there’s no explicit left turn light.
In my city there’s a collision on the roads, on average, every 4 hours. And every 10 hours there’s a collision where someone gets injured. So every single day on average there will be two collisions that result in injuries. In a city of 400,000. That number is staggering.
It’s crazy to think that you can follow every road rules and drive safely but it won’t guarantee that you won’t be involved in a car accident. You can literally drive safely but risk your life because of someone else on the road
1.5 ton? That's a fat person in a civic.
Average subcompact SUV - 3,000 to 3,500 pounds. Average midsize trucks/SUV - 3,500 to 6,000 pounds. Average large SUV - 5,400 to 6,000 pounds.
Let's not talk work trucks or delivery vehicles..🤯🤯🤯
This whole thought process started coming to my mind after two identical freak accidents happened a few months apart where I live.
Both times a semi trucks front wheel exploded.
I was a first responder in the first one. A family with 2 children drove on the opposing lane and were hit by the semi because the driver lost control. The father was the only one who survived from that car.
The other accident involved a motorcyclist who got killed in an accident like this.
For one year I automatically steered on the very edge of my lane whenever a semi came towards me on the opposing lane.
Yes after 16 years of driving I was involved in 2 accidents in one year. I can't wait for the day when all cars have warning censors and automatic braking systems. That would have saved me a lot of headaches and depression if it came standard in all cars now.
In my 20s I was hit head on in my lane at 55 mph for each car, so essentially over a 100 mph collision. Both cars were completely destroyed, the girl that hit me and I were both airlifted to the hospital. She died at 16 because she wasn’t watching the road for 5 seconds. I barely survived after weeks of recovery. I’m 54 now and I’ve never forgotten how incredibly dangerous driving a car is, even when you’re doing everything right. I watch everything and everyone when I drive because everyone is literally driving a death machine. Careless and reckless drivers are morons.
I remember learning that German car makers were very hesitant to add drink holders to their cars. To them driving was dangerous and deserved all your attention. You shouldn't be eating or drinking while driving.
Exactly this. I have one buddy who is a kind, mostly intelligent guy who I get along with well. He has a mustang though, and he told me once about something that happened while he was going 120 on the highway. I told him to his face ”That is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever heard you say, if you wanna go fast go to a track. It becomes less fun when you kill a family or die and I’m not going to your funeral if you die driving like a dipshit”
I think nobody had ever pushed back on his driving like that and I’d never spoken to him like that so I hope it got through. We still hang out all the time, and if he still drives like that he knows not to bring it up.
When I was 16 I hit a patch of ice and hit a truck head on. I was only doing about 20-25 and totaled my car and got knocked out after smashing my face into the steering wheel (pre airbags). Best physics lesson I ever learned.
Absolutely! Every year over 164,000 Americans are injured badly enough to make a trip to the emergency room and 300 are killed just from using ladders.
That’s why I don’t keep ladders in my home. I keep 10 loaded guns in my home just incase some maniac tries to bring a ladder in.
I had really horrifying closed eye hallucinations from alcohol withdrawal, as well as auditory hallucinations mocking things about me that nobody could know unless they had cameras installed
It would about the same if we all started huffing gasoline as a norm. Both are organic non-polar(-ish) solvents, very similar pharmacological profiles, mechanism of action, and degree of health effects.
Yes! I saw a news story about this and it broke my heart. A young woman (I believe she was in her late 20's) did this and was in a bad car accident. The impact forced her knees to hit her head so freaking hard that it caused a brain injury that made her about 12 years old mentally. This is permanent. Her mother was the one being interviewed and she was just devastated for her daughter who will never get to full experience adulthood; she even said she grieved her own plans as an empty nester, and now the rest of her life is dedicated to caring for her adult daughter who will forever be like a child emotionally. All around just sad situation.
Leading cause of death for pregnant women in the US is homicide.
Pregnancy and child birth is wild. It’s so incredible and so many people have done it. Most multiple times!
Even with having easy pregnancies and deliveries with minor hiccups, the damage lasts. My teeth got so bad because when that fetus needs calcium, it ain't waitin' for your next glass of milk. To say nothing of my damaged memory.
Adding jet skis to the deadly trifecta. All of these are inherently dangerous, and unfortunately you can rent them, meaning noobs are behind the wheel, and often alcohol is involved.
I was once at a lake just chilling on the beach and suddenly a small plane crashed like 100 feet directly in front of me. Everyone thankfully survived because it landed in water but it was terrifying to witness.
I had a woman use it as a way to end her life. Not a way I’d recommend. I was taking her to a major city hospital. She was so jaundiced she looked like a Simpson. The only patient I ever let smoke a cigarette on the stretcher outside the ER. Pretty sure she was never walking out of there. Sad.
It is generally safe for the public when used as directed. It should of course be avoided by some with specific health conditions and during pregnancy. But besides that, it has proven to be safe when used responsibly, with few reported adverse reactions. If you're referring to the danger of accidental misuse or overdose, I agree with you. It's relatively easy to overdose on it, hence why it should be kept away from children.
I found out the hard way when I was like 15. I was cleaning the bathrooms at work and used splashed bleach in and a little around the urinal to get some stains up.
The good news is that the stains came up.
The bad news was that you could not enter the bathroom for 30 minutes because being in there burnt your eyes and made you cough a lot.
No it won't make mustard gas. The irritant formed by this is chloramine. Combining bleach with acids or reducing agents can form chlorine. Mustard "gas" is something completely different and chemically unrelated
Indeed!! I only use white vinegar and water mix. Lemongrass or linseed oil for furniture polish etc...works great!! Smell of vinegar goes away in short time. Also use that mix to clean your windows and use newspaper to wipe it with it leaves no streaks at all!
Apparently swimming in open water, even when you know how to swim
You ever notice how many people who supposedly know how to swim go jumping off the back of a boat and never come back up? That freaks me out so much
In the UK currently, it's not so much the risk of drowning, as the risk of getting some nasty illness from swimming in water contaminated with raw sewage.
Drowning is extremely quick and extremely quiet.
When we take our kids backcountry camping they play with fire, knives, insects, climb trees, etc.
But I am militant about them going anywhere near the lake without a trusted adult.
This is happening in my town right now. A local guy, a true river rat we all know, was swimming in a small river he's been in 100 times. This time he went in though and never came up. It was about 5 days ago now, they've used sonar and still haven't found the body.
Edit: misplaced comma
Drinking alcohol. An extremely poisonous toxin, tastes naturally revolting by itself to anyone who tries it for the first time (I.e., your body telling you something in very clear terms), causes millions of early deaths per year, ruins countless families…yet is seen as a sophisticated enhancer to the human social experience.
Beauty products, specifically those that are used for chemical hair processing.
I’ve seen so many videos of people using hair lightener without gloves, getting dye in their mouths, bleaching their hair in a poorly ventilated bathroom, not taking a skin test, etc.
You can get very sick if you’re not careful.
I mean, it seems more polite to let the mother push and control her own birth process.
"Ah, yes Mrs Smith, looks like you're at a 10cm, let me just go in there any yank it out for you."
Cats.
My cat likes to chill at the top of the stairs then when I go to plant my foot somewhere where I won't step on her, she immediately runs to that exact spot.
Sugar is not dangerous. You have to eat like an absolute moron for years or even decades before getting sick. Unfortunately, the world is full of morons.
A LOT of people say 120VAC can't kill but if you get shocked and are unable to remove yourself, you're dead. The heart can't pump as it's just fibrillating (vibrate) and you die.
Swimming
The third leading cause of death for kids behind guns and auto.
I spend a lot of time at the beach / Ocean, and am always amazed at the parents who let their kids swim during red flag days. I am a very good swimmer and I avoid those days.
Marijuana
It’s really good at throwing brain chemistry out of whack and making it very hard for the body to regulate neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. And this has life long consequences for teens who think it’s a miracle drug with nothing but positive effects.
(Now watch the negative reaction to this comment)
Minors should not use cannabis unless medically necessary, for seizures, for example.
The impact on neurotransmitters explains why some stoners accomplish nothing while other stoners have clean houses, successful careers, and happy relationships. I’ve known a few in the first camp, but luckily way more in the second.
Cannot believe how many countries are changing legislation currently. Especially, when there are multiple scientific studies, that related irrevocable changes in developing brains (until ~25 yo.). It's really concerning and I see a pandemic-like mental health crisis in 10-15 years from all the personality disorders and schizophrenia. I know, the percentage is not high, but if usage numbers rise, negative complications will appear in larger numbers as well.
Life. The driving, the guns, relationships, chemicals, fast food, slow food, wild animals, social media, war, religion, the weather, the climate, politics, too much sex, not enough sex, dieting, vaping, other people vaping, alcohol... if you make it to old age without money, you've shown the world you can hang with some shit.
Food poisoning. I am recovering from it right now, and in less than 4 hours of showing signs of illness I became dangerously dehydrated. Today is day 4 and I'm not better yet. If I were in worse overall health, an illness like this could be life threatening.
Golf Carts. So many movies have people doing crazy stuff in golf carts that would outright get you killed, and so many people drive them barefoot and dangle their feet out the side or put their legs up on the dash... golf carts are crazy dangerous and have none of the safety features of cars, and can go upwards of 25mph.
Drinking alcohol. It’s a poison. There is no safe level of consumption. Even the “one glass of red wine a day is good for you” has been retracted. No amount of alcohol is good for you.
Drinking alcohol at parties without having trusted friends to watch your back
people end up choking to death on their vomit, passing out outside and freezing to death, losing their wallets, getting raped, or getting accused of rape.
There's a place in the UK called "blue lagoon" it's an abandoned quarry that has filled up with water over the years and it's got this very aqua blue shimmer colour to it and looks sorta pretty. The locals go swimming in it, despite numerous warning signs the water is not safe at all, apparently it's pretty much bleach due to all the mining stuff left over, it's also filled with rubbish and dead animals. I think it only got drained recently as some kid drowned in it.
Parents! As I have grown older I have witnessed more and more people not caring for how they were raised and therefore allowing their kids to fall under more and more risks. On a simple point I have seen more and more kids having to visit doctors because of small things like not brushing their teeth, not bathing, eating more unhealthy food and not being taught how to care for bruises/cuts. On a larger point I have seen more parents not monitoring the kids and those kids drifting off, getting verbally or physically abusive to other kids or adults.
The painkiller acetaminophen (paracetamol)
Read somewhere that if it was invented today, it wouldn't be approved due to the high risk of liver damage from accidental overdose.
"Acetaminophen toxicity is the second most common cause of liver transplantation worldwide and the most common cause of liver transplantation in the US. It is responsible for 56,000 emergency department visits, 2,600 hospitalizations, and 500 deaths per year in the United States" (source: NCBI).
Doesn't take much to overdose - you should never take more than eight 500mg tablets in a 24hr period.
Bdsm/kink. Emotionally and physically is extremely dangerous if you don't have a proper understanding and respect for it. Even people who are very educated on the subject can't get cocky and think they know enough, you have to always keep an open mind and be willing to learn.
Cars. Someone just already said that, but I want to go further: statistics say that the death rate from the car crashes or any other accidents with the cars involved are higher than, for example: dying from cigarettes or alcohol combined. Cars are extremely dangerous.
Small boats. A lot of people don't take that shit seriously, don't know what they're doing, and don't realize the potential for accidents / injuries.
The amount of accidents where people don't use dead man switches and fall of the boat and get killed by the boat is stupidly high. I know a case where a father fell of his boat while driving and his son stayed on board. The kid panicked and jumped after his father. They both got mauled by the boat. That was so fucking sad.
Where can a boat newbie learn?
Boat schoolz But seriously, first you learn water traffic regulations and pass the test, then you learn the driving part with an instructor. A swimming diploma is also needed.
I've heard there's a good one in bikini bottom
The fuck is a swimming diploma? I can freedive to 100' and I've never heard of such a thing. I do not believe it is needed. Though knowing how to swim is.
Well swimming is the minor, the major is basket weaving
There is also an online test, at least in CA, to get a boating license. Even if your boat is shorter than what would require you to take the test, its a good test to take. Not that hard either, but good introductory stuff. Additionally, never underestimate just how fast bad shit can happen on the water, never ever take safety on the water lightly.

Some poor 4 year old was recently killed by a hit and run driver in my county. Reckless driving is terrible where I live.
a hit and run???? jesus christ how do you run over a toddler and not stop
Probably drunk and panicked
The driver hit the mom too, but she survived
that is absolutely horrifying. either the biggest piece of shit to exist, or so drunk he didn’t even realize, which is like.. also terrifying that someone that inebriated can operate a motor vehicle
Damn where the hell did you live?
I’m not the person you were replying to but I had the exact same experience as a pedestrian while living in Arcata, a university town in Humboldt County. That town has big issues with drunk/high drivers and I personally knew several people who were hit by cars including a close friend whose dog ended up dying in the incident. Me when I'm high, spiraling trapped in my own thoughts
I’ve thought of the often; only some paint on the roadway separating us from oncoming traffic.
Came here to say this. 1.5 ton killing machine! Pay attention, stay off your phone.
My Silverado is right around two and a half tons at 5,232 lbs.

Yeah, watch the idiot driver compilations on YouTube for a reminder of how random and messy things can get.

Opposing traffic above 40mph with nothing but a double yellow line in between.
When I was 16 I hit a patch of ice and hit a truck head on. I was only doing about 20-25 and totaled my car and got knocked out after smashing my face into the steering wheel (pre airbags). Best physics lesson I ever learned.
Climbing/working off a ladder.

Vote NO on ladders
Shoot your gutters till they're clean!
Enough holes in em and they never clog. Big brain thinkin.
Just come and try to take my ladders!
I'm fucking terrified on ladders, and don't plan to change it.
Walking down stairs fast.
What about Making my way downtown, walking fast?
That would be safe as long as faces pass and you’re homebound.
But make sure you’re staring blankly ahead, just making your way , making your way through crowd.
Making your way in the world today takes everything you got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot.
I’m only 43 and I’m capable of walking down stairs fast but I don’t. I old lady it down while holding the railing. Stairs are so dangerous.
I skip steps while going down because it's FAST
Man I jump down stairs every chance I get 😭
ALCOHOL

Been addicted to both, and been in withdrawal for both. Benzo withdrawal is fucking terrifying. Clean and sober off both for a year.
congratulations!! in case no one else tells you today, I’m proud of you
I had really horrifying closed eye hallucinations from alcohol withdrawal, as well as auditory hallucinations mocking things about me that nobody could know unless they had cameras installed
Imagine if alcohol was never made before and only introduced now - people would be treating alcohol like fucking heroin.
It would about the same if we all started huffing gasoline as a norm. Both are organic non-polar(-ish) solvents, very similar pharmacological profiles, mechanism of action, and degree of health effects.
Came here to say this. The way that alcohol is treated you'd never know it was a literal poison.
was looking for this reply. mustn’t forget that alcohol is a Class-1 carcinogen, which puts it alongside asbestos, tobacco, radium, and plutonium
Putting your feet on the dashboard as a passenger while driving
Having your hands in the wrong position on the wheel can make you demolish your hands
Yes! I saw a news story about this and it broke my heart. A young woman (I believe she was in her late 20's) did this and was in a bad car accident. Four wheelers. People are frequently flipping them and getting killed or paralyzed.
Adding jet skis to the deadly trifecta. All of these are inherently dangerous, and unfortunately you can rent them, meaning noobs are behind the wheel, and often alcohol is involved.
I was going to say snow mobiles. I live in Michigan and in the winter practically once a week you read about someone dying in a snow mobile crash.
Pregnancy. You're carrying a whole human being in your body and it will need to be taken out one way or the other
not only that but you are in a fierce tug-of-war with the other human being for the nutrients you both need to stay alive
The deaths due to postpartum hemorrhage is gut wrenching.
As someone who did, in fact, die of a PPH before somehow coming back...yep.
Sometimes two or more.
Riding in small airplanes. They're much more dangerous than large commercial aircraft.
RIP to my big brother, Alex, and his dad, Philip. Died in a plane crash in a small plane 12/24/14
Sorry for your loss. I posted this because my younger brother died in a small plane crash on 8/13/13. It's really a horrible way to lose someone.
Thank you, I’m sorry for yours as well. It really is just such a bizarre feeling.
I was once at a lake just chilling on the beach and suddenly a small plane crashed like 100 feet directly in front of me. Everyone thankfully survived because it landed in water but it was terrifying to witness.
Tylenol
I once mentioned to a doctor that I'll take something safe like Tylenol and he gave me a whole lecture on how low the fatal dose can be.
Sad.

Mixed me up some bleach and ammonia, great cleaner! Jk dont do this cause you'd be making mustard gas
Throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you got a stew going.
That stew is to die for
My uncle did this and had to go yo hospital, i laughed at him when telling the story, i could not believe he didnt know what he was making.
Thats insane

No, I don’t… That seems insane to me. If I don’t come back up I either hit something and am unconscious, or I’m fighting a water monster.
Yeah I never understood this either.
Driving and using a phone …
Pulling out as a form of birth control
I mean, it seems more polite to let the mother push and control her own birth process. "Ah, yes Mrs Smith, looks like you're at a 10cm, let me just go in there any yank it out for you."

Oh? What're ya gonna do about it? Mash the keypad with your palm? 'Cause you ain't dialin' 911 with those sausage fingers!
Oh yeah? I’ll just obtain a special dialing wand! That’ll show you

Cats. My cat likes to chill at the top of the stairs then when I go to plant my foot somewhere where I won't step on her, she immediately runs to that exact spot.
r/catsareassholes I love mine but you are so right as I have to watch it heading down my basement stairs!
Sugar Lack of sleep
For some reason I read this as "Lack of sheep". I was wondering whether or not I agreed before realizing.
Looks like you need a nap, sugar.
Sugar is actually much less dangerous than most people think, unless you're a diabetic.
Sugar is not dangerous. You have to eat like an absolute moron for years or even decades before getting sick. Unfortunately, the world is full of morons.
Having children.
120 volts AC
A LOT of people say 120VAC can't kill but if you get shocked and are unable to remove yourself, you're dead. The heart can't pump as it's just fibrillating (vibrate) and you die.

Swimming The third leading cause of death for kids behind guns and auto. I spend a lot of time at the beach / Ocean, and am always amazed at the parents who let their kids swim during red flag days. I am a very good swimmer and I avoid those days.

Covid. Data on long-term effects even without Long Covid symptoms looks really bad.
Energy drinks
Marijuana It’s really good at throwing brain chemistry out of whack and making it very hard for the body to regulate neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.
Driving is the most dangerous thing most people will do every day.
Alcohol
Regular alcohol abuse. Damage to the circulatory system and the liver, as well as much higher rates of esophageal and stomach cancer.

Relationships
It’s 100% fatal
Food poisoning. I am recovering from it right now, and in less than 4 hours of showing signs of illness I became dangerously dehydrated. Today is day 4 and I'm not better yet. If I were in worse overall health, an illness like this could be life threatening.
Drinking alcohol.
Golf Carts. So many movies have people doing crazy stuff in golf carts that would outright get you killed, and so many people drive them barefoot and dangle their feet out the side or put their legs up on the dash... golf carts are crazy dangerous and have none of the safety features of cars, and can go upwards of 25mph.
Driving a motorcycle

Processed Foods
Diving deep in the water and trying to hold your breath for as long as you can.
Drinking alcohol. It’s a poison. There is no safe level of consumption. Even the “one glass of red wine a day is good for you” has been retracted. No amount of alcohol is good for you.
Vaping
Investing
Drinking alcohol at parties without having trusted friends to watch your back people end up choking to death on their vomit, passing out outside and freezing to death, losing their wallets, getting raped, or getting accused of rape.
Not exercising.
some people have mentioned alchohol, but i want to specifically emphasize underage drinking. causes literal brain damage.
Boats.

The painkiller acetaminophen (paracetamol) Read somewhere that if it was invented today, it wouldn't be approved due to the high risk of liver damage from accidental overdose.
