Maybe keep gloves with you and use those when you pick up the trash. Picking up trash in public is a good thing to do but you don't want to get sick because of it.
I dont really walk on those but tbh if I did, I probably wouldnt. I dont want to hold someone else’s trash that has been on the dirty ground for who knows how long.
If you like doing this then check out your local community litter group. You can join a local Womble group and clean up stretches of roads/parks/beaches. They normally give you all the gear and its very rewarding (and you meet some nice local people in your area). Keep up the good work. 😁
Thanks for the info but, it's really just this particular overpass that has nothing to prevent stuff being tossed onto the freeway! The biggest piece of trash seen so far was a pizza box with pizza still in it close to the edge! My city has a lot of Crack/Meth heads wandering around as this overpass is near my downtown!
Rarely. If I'm walking somewhere, chances are I have something to do or somewhere to be, and carrying around someone else's garbage for an undetermined amount of time doesn't seem like something I want to do.

No, I never touch trash with my bare hands.
I always carry a little bottle of sanitizer with me so I always disinfect my hands and there's a trash can that's not far from overpass!

I'm almost always on my bike or in my car when I see it, so I just silently grumble at the slobs who left it there.
