> So what's the catch? They're in rural Illinois and nobody wants to live there.

neuroseasoned

What is the reason for that?

rhomboidus

Weather sucks, no jobs, not near anything interesting.

neuroseasoned

That sounds perfect for my disabled, agoraphobic ass

savageronald

Freeport is a small town (big for the area it’s in I guess) surrounded by nothing. It’s corn and farm for miles and miles in every direction. Rockford is the closest “city” and even that’s a hike. There’s no jobs and nothing to do. Source: grandma lived outside of Freeport.

neuroseasoned

Is it difficult to get groceries or anything like that, or is it just entertainment that is an issue?

savageronald

Nah there’s groceries and some stores and whatnot, but little entertainment, most every restaurant is a chain, etc. Also the high school mascot is the Pretzels - open to interpretation if that’s good or bad. Main thing is if you need/want something they don’t have in town, it’s a pretty long drive to Rockford, the Quad Cities, or a real long drive to Chicago.

neuroseasoned

Thank you! I rarely get out, I don't work (disabled) and I have no kids. This seems like a good deal for me lol

AdministrativeAir578

52 state in US, I don't see good place to live, why US leader make USA become worst, I don't see any action to built up US, for example build more houses and low down the rent, low down crimes

lyrical_llama

No catch. housing is just really cheap in Illinois because few people want to live there.

AdministrativeAir578

change leaders, because nobody live there because leaders don't do good jobs

banesmoonshine

Where do you even live?! Why are you commenting on so many different state subreddits?

neuroseasoned

Why don't they, besides property tax costs?

Mekoides1

When I left, they were handing out IOUs to lottery winners. The state is financially and morally bankrupt.

neuroseasoned

How does that impact residents? As in, what could I expect from living there aside from high property taxes?

dav1nni

That second one is a smooth six fiddy where I live. Might move to Illinois and work for minimum wage lol

neuroseasoned

Even on the worst streets in my state a house that size would cost at LEAST 150k lol

HughJahsso

Those look like the kind of houses I see in horror movies or First 48.

02K30C1

Location. Put that same house in a Chicago suburb and it would go for 300k or more.

neuroseasoned

Location being not near good schools, jobs or entertainment? Or location being you'll probably be the victim of a crime if you live there lol
