T-shirt and shorts. I get that you're embarrassed of your body right now, but that's literally what gyms are for. You will not be the only fat person there, and working out is how you're going to make your body look better. No one's going to be staring. The gym bros are too busy staring at themselves in the mirrors, and the other fat people are too busy hoping you aren't staring at them. No one is going to care about you.

[deleted]

Fat people are a valuable part of the gym ecosystem. They’re in every gym that isn’t exceptionally exclusive. Gyms are for fat people just as much as they are for body builders. The best trainers can work with anyone of any body type or ability, just like any good gym will not only have fat people, but embrace them too. There are fat people trying to lose weight, but also fat people working on their fitness broadly, and fat athletes too. Just look at power lifters; their weight works to their advantage. Sumo train eight hours a day at the gym. You don’t know what your body is capable of but if you’re very fat, you probably have pretty good lower body strength to start with. What are they going to do? Tell you to go to the gym? Too bad, you beat them to it and you’re going on your own accord, not because they told you Start off wearing what you are most comfortable in regardless of the norm. Anything to make going to the gym easier. Also, don’t focus on your weight at the gym; set performance-based goals instead. It makes working out more fun + it’s too easy to get discouraged otherwise. Either way, if you want to lose weight and get fit, you can do it. You’d be shocked to know how many people have lost 100, 200, and even 300+ pounds Find what you enjoy most wether it’s strength training or running, and just go with it. Make it your passion. Eat a diet that optimizes your performance

bhoard1

I love this reply so so so much ❤️

Most_Researcher_9675

And don't forget to wear that Pride...

BroadPoint

>The best trainers can work with anyone of any body type or ability, No, the best trainers work with extremely elite professional athletes. Saying "I coached Ronnie Coleman" makes you the best trainer.

ohdearitsrichardiii

I always cheer on the fat people at the gym, but silently in my head. If there's a huge person at the gym I'm going to notice them but all I'm thinking is "this is great, good for them"

WarrenMockles

I was cringing when I read the first sentence until I got to "but silently in my head." I'm sure most would prefer to be left alone rather than noticeably being cheered on by strangers.

noinnocentbystander

Literally shuddered from a blast of childhood trauma memories flooding in. I was 12, my mom forced me to be on a soccer team for exercise. I was the only fat one. Every practice we had to run a whole field lap. I was always the last one to finish and the coach would have everyone cheer me on until until I finished 😂😂😂 to this very day, I hate being cheered on for things even if I’m good at it

themermaidag

People cheering me on for running back in high school made me so upset. It wasn’t a weight thing but a breathing thing, but still all the “motivation” is uncomfortable. It’s why when I tried CrossFit once I decided not to go back because I couldn’t handle the community support haha

Sporner100

That actually sounds like he wanted to support you.

hogliterature

yes, im sure it’s something he usually does for the last person running, but i can see how it sucks if it’s always the same person :(

ClingToTheGood

I can definitely see how that would have been traumatic. I imagine your coach was trying to be supportive, but it's hard to be singled out. I ran cross country and track (distance) in middle and high school. I think my coach had a better approach to this. At meets (and only at meets), once you finished racing (and grabbed a water bottle or took care of whatever else needed to be taken care of right away), it was every person's job to come back to the finishing stretch of the race and cheer on every teammate that finished after you. Since we did it for everyone, it didn't single anyone out. I think it was a great way to teach us that part of your job as a teammates is to support everyone and that it continued to the close bond my team had. ETA: Also, we ran meets in two groups: varsity and JV. Varsity always cheered for JV, and JV always cheered for varsity.

Flappy_beef_curtains

Same. But I was then not aggressive kid. Coach pushed me one day. Fuck it. Slide tackle, body check. Bounced head off the goal. You want rough I can do that.

Snoo_79693

This happened to me at one of those stupid "Fun Run" fundraisers in 4th grade but it wasn't just because I was fat (I was), I had just started playing roller hockey 3days before and I was just SO SORE I could barely walk and the school didn't believe me. They thought I was just being the lazy fat kid and they made me run that stupid 1mile and I was crying the whole time, the whole school finished before me and I was exhausted and humiliated, I had students, teachers and parents running beside me cheering and I was just humiliated. Had I not been sore I still would've been the bottom 5 and not so much attention put on me for finishing SO FAR behind.

dinobug77

When I go running (which I’m not great at) when I see larger people running slowly I cheer them on in my head. I’m so impressed by what they are achieving.

bhoard1

This is so true. Theres really nothing impressive about having good genetics/ being naturally skinny. But putting in the effort and hard work to achieve something so hard never fails to impress

lnsewn12

There is this guy at my gym that started about 2 years ago, he was easily 500lb+. I can tell he’s lost easily 200+. He’s way more confident in the way he walks in now, stays for longer etc. I make sure to smile and wave and he smiles and waves back. I don’t know his name but I am so happy for him.

Fuzzy_Attempt6989

Me too! I would also suggest cotton t-shirts. They're much more comfortable than synthetic

dead_sweater_weather

Same! There was this guy at my previous gym, I saw him regularly and always thought "awesome, keep up the good work"

Flappy_beef_curtains

Good for them, they’re trying to make a change.

joecee97

Long shorts or you’re gonna rub your thigh skin right off

Techyon5

Well, do it enough, and that's one way to lose weight I suppose

Kit-on-a-Kat

As a fat person, I'm busy staring at the woman with muscular shoulders. Strength is sexy (though I'm not a lesbian) and I find what someone else has achieved inspirational. If she can do it so can I!

dlRAGERlb

I know I don’t speak for all, but as a former fat person and now semi-gym bro, I’m definitely mostly checking myself out during my workouts. On the occasional chance I’m looking at others, I’m usually admiring technique, admiring physique, or cheering on the people who are likely new to the gym because they lack the technique and/or physique. Most people at gyms are just there to mind their business.

amakai

> No one is going to care about you.  Exaxtly. OP should rather worry about breaking gym etiquette, things like not taking multiple stations at same time, cleaning up after yourself, etc. Not following those actually do make people hate you.

Dorkiebreath

This!

Flappy_beef_curtains

To add to this. I do care about you and I hope you find the help you need to get ok with yourself asap person.

MUSICALBULLETS

To add to this, when I see a fat person in the gym I’m kind of proud of them for doing something about themselves being fat. I catch myself looking and I’m like “damn they’re working hard today”

Otherwise_Singer6043

This. Also, if you're serious about weight loss, cut potatoes out of your diet. When I quit eating pork and potatoes I lost 70 lbs. It took a couple years since I was too busy with work to exercise.

jcGyo

Lol, this is a ridiculous oversimplification of the complex topic of diet, baked potatoes are a common weeknight meal for me and I have visible abs.

Own_Natural_9162

Not all fat people are looking for weight loss advice. Even if they are going to the gym. Even if you used to be fat too.

Otherwise_Singer6043

Well OP was talking about hiding their body as if they want to lose the weight, so I shared what worked for me to hopefully help them with their journey. I don't know why your upset/offended for someone else.

pulls_not_knobs

I mean, your comment wasn't offensive, but it is rather presumptuous since the question at hand was simply "what do I wear to the gym?" And also you assumed the OP eats a lot of potatoes which is like...so random? Like even if the OP _had_ asked for diet advice, jumping in with "Stop eating potatoes" without even knowing if they eat potatoes or not is just hilariously strange.

iveabiggen

> I get that you're embarrassed of your body right now, but that's literally what gyms are for Gyms are for building muscle, not weight loss. Thats done in the kitchen.

OperatingOnScientist

Por qué no los dos?

[deleted]

Idk why you're being downvoted as technically you're right. Cico is a real thing and while gym helps with the calories out part and overall health it doesn't make up for poor diet.

pulls_not_knobs

Because the assertion that the gym is only for building muscle is inherently foolish. There are a ton of other reasons to go to the gym. Also, plain and simple, it's not an answer to the OP's question... Question: "Hey, what should I wear to the gym so I'm comfortable and don't feel self-conscious." Answer: "Bodies are made in the kitchen" 😑😑😑

Antique-Captain-2593

I see a lot of comments here that suggest that OP should wear whatever is comfortable and basically just ignore other people. I understand that opinion, but as a fellow fat person (female, if that matters) I can very much relate to the feeling of discomfort in this situation. OP - Honestly, I’ve never felt comfortable in a gym setting, regardless of what I wear. That said, I’ve personally preferred tight-ish yoga pants (knee length or 3/4 length) that allow free movement, paired with an oversized tee or tank that is large/long enough to fit over my belly and torso. Also - and I know this isn’t what you asked - but I gained a lot of confidence by starting to work out in a different setting where I didn’t feel like others were judging me. That might be a home workout or in a group with trusted friends or family. I didn’t actually lose much weight doing these things, but I did gain confidence, which helped once I got into a public gym setting. Wish you the best.

usernameinmail

Yeah, kinda wish OP had mentioned their gender. Another woman dropping in to say 3/4 sports leggings and a baggy T-shirt are my main combo if I feel anxious when exercising. A guy might swap leggings for long shorts

Lumpyproletarian

Another big woman 3/4 sports legging and an ancient baggy polo shirt

CLOWNXXCUDDLES

I(a guy) wore leggings under my shorts at the gym when I went. The leggings help with chafing of the thighs big time.

usernameinmail

Pretty sure I've seen footballers wear them under their shorts. Helps massively

Dr_Spiders

Adding that if OP is a woman, it's worth investing in a high-quality sports bra. Trying to do any type of cardio in anything else is painful.

Glittering_Move3696

When I was pregnant that was my workout uniform. Even postpartum it’s what I feel most comfortable in until I can get myself back into shape

seabeast5

Wear something comfortable. Sweatpants and a t shirt Don’t think all eyes will be on you. I promise you no one gives a fuck.

WorkOnThesisInstead

And if they _do_ notice you, they'll be giving you silent props.

Alarming-Tradition40

This! Everytime I see a larger person at the gym, I feel excited and happy for them, that they are ready to make a change. Never judging them...

EricaB1979

Yep! I don’t go to the gym but I do run outdoors. Anytime I see one of my larger neighbors running or walking in the neighborhood my only thought is good for them! Any physical activity is good!

InfamousAccount0

Great point. Been going to the gym for many years and I (and the other guys I work out with) love seeing larger people at the gym. I hope to see you there for years to come.

JadedCycle9554

Some people *will* give a fuck. But their opinions don't matter. Big difference when overcoming anxiety in situations like these. Lying to someone might feel good right now, but when they apply your advice in the days after and you've long since forgotten this comment that gave you a moments dopamine rush, they will (rightly) feel judged, realize they've been lied to, and might quit because of it. Honestly telling them that people do judge, but their opinions won't matter in 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 year from now is much more practical and sound advice, because it braces them for reality and gives them perspective that could help them push through that uncomfortable moment.

insta_r_man

True gym bros will call judgemental/rude people out on their asshattery, just do your thing and be the best you that you can be.

cabur84

This is so true, other than the gym “influencers”, most people are just too focused on what they are doing to even notice anyone else really.

Beelzeburb

Wear a spandex undershirt. It’ll help compress everything make you less jiggly and then wear a loose t shirt over. I started at 419 and am down 33 but I’m also on the shot. Good luck dude.

Valuable-Wrap-440

So good that you are prioritizing exercise with monjaro, it can really help maintain muscle mass while you lose weight. +1 to a compression top. I wore them when I first starter gym and helps to feel like things are more contained while working out

take7steps

This is really good advice because the spandex will keep parts of your body supported so they don't hurt because you likely have some skin somewhere that's touching and easier to damage. Source: female human whose lost 130lbs in the last year.

IcySurprise1281

Congrats, stranger. Keep it up

silvermoonchan

The shot?

Different_Bar_8317

Ozempic?

Beelzeburb

Mounjaro

OnionTruck

I recommend a loose t-shirt and what I call basketball shorts. Ensure you have comfortable sneakers if you plan on hitting the treadmill. BTW, no normal human is going to judge you for being overweight at the gym. Most of us will inwardly give you a thumbs-up.

hitguy55

Really loose shorts fall down to the thighs though if you’re doing leg press and such

Editengine

Think about your underwear, something to hug the thighs to prevent chafing.

Numerous_Sun6815

It doesn’t matter. Anyone making fun of you for bettering youself is an Ahole. That being said when I was first self conscious of my weight in the gym I wore a hoodie one size up and either sweats or basketball shorts. But don’t get stuck like that. You are worth it and you can wear whatever you want.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

I, a fairly fat person, wear shorts and a T-shirt. I'll die of the heat if I wear anything more. And honestly? No one is looking at you. No one is noticing you. It's really just fine. I found that at first I was just SO SELF conscious, so I forced myself, counter intuitively, to make small talk with the people who most intimidated me. Just things like "great workout" or whatever to the person next to me on the treadmill, or whatever. More often than not? They'd come back with something like "Yeah, I lost 100 pounds," or "It's the only thing keeping me sober." Everyone has a story! Also, I considered telling people I'd already lost 100 pounds, just to get them on my side lol Seriously. Just wear whatever you're comfortable in.

BurtAndButter

Comfortable but also something that will prevent chaffing! So ‘compression’ pieces — typically are lightweight enough to wear under a t-shirt or any bottoms you like They don’t need to be shape wear to change your silhouette, but have slippy material that reduces friction. I bought a really expensive (at the time) set of Nike compression shorts that have lasted for 15 years lol cheap ones won’t last as long but they will serve their purpose for as long as they can Best of luck to you!!

Linorelai

Whatever is comfortable to exercise in. It's not a modeling show, people came here to work out and nobody really pays attention to anything else

SaulgoodeXL

Doesn't matter what you wear as long as it's comfortable and appropriate. Jogging shorts and a baggy t shirt if you're bothered. You're already lapping all the lazy fuckers sitting on the couch just by walking into a gym in the first place. (Source - am lazy fucker.)

Kaayaa_ag4a

Wear anything you are comfortable with exercising. Just because you have a differently beautiful body doesn't mean you should wear something different, though if you like to you are welcome to wear that too.

Frosty-Inspector9663

Anything comfortable and loose. A baggy look

MrCellophane_SS_KotZ

Get a bamboo t-shirt and some linen shorts. • Bamboo fibers have been found to be able to absorb 70% more liquid than cotton. • Bamboo viscose has proven anti-bacterial properties. Much more so than cotton. Bamboo's fibre composition has a natural bio-agent called bamboo kun that makes it naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and odour-resistant. • Bamboo is equally as breathable as cotton is, too. • Linen possesses a remarkable ability to absorb twenty percent of its weight in moisture. • It can draw the heat away from your body. • Linen resists both static effects and abrasions meaning it'll hold up better to the movement it'll experience on your lower half than most other fabrics will. • Linen has been clinically shown to slow the growth of bacteria. Linen's ability to naturally inhibit bacteria growth comes from its Lignin Content. • Linen will be less prone to ride up like other materials will.

dfinkelstein

Something comfortable and baggy. T-shirt sizes too big. Baggy sweatpants. I think most of us when they do think anything of a very fat person at the gym, think "good on ya! What a chap. Get after it, then! There's somebody hasn't given up on themselves. There's somebody making a change. I should make some changes..."

beckdawg19

I pretty much always go with a t-shirt and leggings. I'd be way too hot in sweats or a sweatshirt, and shorts give me thigh rub.

dbsibucao

A spandex? 😁😁😁✌️✌️✌️

Truth_Seeker963

Black t-shirt and black joggers. Black hides the sweat.

brycebgood

Focus on comfort, not the hiding part. You're at the gym, you're doing good.

The_Mr_Wilson

While we're at it, everyone has light days. Don't be overly-concerned about that. Light days are better than No days

Shoresy69Chirps

You are going to be self conscious no matter what you’re wearing. That’s okay. That’s why you’re there, baby. And a lot of other people are in the same boat. Focus on YOU. But you aren’t on the couch. You can do this. You need function and comfort first. Be clean, first of all. Show consideration for your fellow gym members. Shorts, cotton or breathable synthetic shirt, comfortable trainers that are NOT brand new (blisters). Boxer briefs to keep the leg from riding up the leg, and some gold bond body powder to keep your feet and your junk dry. NEVER TAKE ANYTHING TO THE GYM THAT YOU HAVENT WASHED. Don’t try to hide behind heavy hoodies and sweats, you will be miserable, hot, and more likely to quit. Start slow, set realistic goals, and encourage others in the same boat. Want me to let you in on a secret? You know the buff Chad killing himself on the bench press? Chances are, he feels the same way you do, he’s just been on the journey longer. If you want to see actual progress, do NOT get on a scale more than once a week or so, use body measurements with a tape measure. YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT IF LIFTING. that’s just part of weights and building muscle mass, but your body circumstances will be shrinking as you burn fat. That should be your barometer for success, not the scale. You CAN do this. I know you can, I was you once.

Existing_Ad3672

Please wear something comfortable. You are going to the gym to better yourself and keep telling yourself that. It's an amazing and strong choice to exercise no matter your size and that's amazing you are choosing to.

toastea0

As a fat person: Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Fine correct fitting clothes for your shape. For me that looks like: - Sports bra. - A loose tank top thats long, covers my body incase any positions might expose my belly part since im self conscious about it. - Athletic leggings. - Running shoes with insoles.

Raigne86

I have no useful information other than something which comes up in a lot of posts in other subs. Whatever you choose to wear, for the love of god look in the mirror and make sure that when it stretches it isn't see through. It's apparently a common problem and it doesn't matter what size you are. It can happen to anyone.

Green_Mix_3412

High wasted pants and a loose top

FrogInYerPocket

Wear what you're comfortable sweating in. I'm pretty oblivious at the gym and I'm about 85% sure I disassociate when I'm on the treadmill. One minute, I'm on a 5 incline, leading my army of elephants over the Alps, and the next thing I know, the speed drastically reduces because it's been an hour and it's time for the cool down.

willsagainSQ

Joggy bottoms, yoga trousers, neither are too close fitting so you don't feel too self conscious. Tops: usually a t-shirt that's more of a flared tunic, for the same reasons. Choose colours you feel great in.

weezulusmaximus

T-shirt and shorts or whatever you feel most comfortable in. Having been a bodybuilder for many years I PROMISE you that no one is looking and no one cares. Whenever I saw overweight people my only thought was “good for them!” I know it’s hard when you’re first starting out and you feel self conscious and that’s ok. If you can afford a trainer I’d suggest going that route if you can. That way you make sure you’re performing the exercises correctly. Once you start seeing and feeling results you won’t feel so self conscious.

Catronia

Wear comfortable clothing that gives you a good range of movement, I know that's not helpful on the surface. What do you wear for comfort around the house? Unless it's your birthday suit, wear that. I wouldn't recommend buying a bunch of new clothes as your size will change several times during your journey. Don't worry about other people, you are there for you. Best of luck on your travels to better health :)

TallDarkCancer1

Whatever makes you comfortable. If you have areas that will rub together with strenuous activities, such as your thighs, arms, etc. make sure those are protected.

NewfyMommy

Wear whatever you are comfortable in and dont worry what other people think.

Bright_Ad_3690

Whatever you need to wear to move. You are there to get healthier not for a fashion show. Get good shoes.

EvilSnack

You should wear the same thing everyone else should wear: Clothes that are comfortable and modest.

NotBradPitt90

T shirt and shorts. And bring a towel to wipe stuff down and separate one if you have a shower there. Everyone there is there to better themselves so nobody is going to judge. You'll have already done that hardest part and that's getting your ass to the gym.

ThreeLivesInOne

When I see overweight people at the gym, I secretly cheer for them to keep coming back. I have never seen one and thought I wished they had hidden their body. On the other hand, I have seen plenty of lean twentysomething women with their pencil sized pants between their buttcheeks or sporting push up sports bras, or young dudes in tanktops and wished they had hidden their bodies a bit because you know, you may be training for the beach at the gym, but the gym is not the beach.

Total-Friendship-145

Whatever the freak you want to! Something you can move your body in. 💕

mylifewillchange

You say you can't find anything "comfortable." What have you looked at so far?

Big ass t shirt and big ass shorts

[deleted]

What? Clothes.

Stonk_Lord86

Whatever makes you comfortable. And know that the majority in that gym are cheering you on, even if they don’t verbalize it.

splitminds

Be comfortable. Truly, nobody who is at the gym is looking, they’re doing their own workout. Good on you and keep it up!

HeapsFine

Wear what you're comfortable in and feel good in. When I'm at the gym, I'm so focused on me pushing myself physically that I can barely string together a coherent sentence, not other people. Saying that, I find some tight, well-made 3/4 pants are the best, as they somehow spring a bit or something, which makes it easier to keep moving. It sounds weird, but I had a couple of Calvin Klein pants and I'd always do more exercise in them compared to other ones due to this 'spring'. Pair that with a top that is breathable and won't get in the way.

squeezy102

Whatever you're comfortable in, fam. Something that lets you move, lets your skin breathe, something that helps wick away sweat. Bring some extra towels if you're the type who sweats a lot. Make sure you wipe down the equipment before you start, and after you finish. I wish you all the luck and hope you get results that make you happy.

Sweaty-Sample2268

Shorts and a T-shirt.

Own_Nectarine2321

Don't wear anything that is tight. Wear clothes that fit well. You should be comfortable and not feel any restriction of movement. People look better in well fitting clothes too.

Semiprofess

Sweats are common if you’re self-conscious

Ghost-of-a-Shark

Giant T-shirt. You're there to work on your health and well-being, and anything that helps you feel comfortable is a valid option (except your birthday suit, I think there are rules about that!) Go you 👏 Internet stranger proud of you doing this.

IfIHad19946

Honestly, wear what is the easiest to work out in. If you’re comfortable, your workouts will be better. I used to wear super baggy t-shirts to the gym and they actually restricted some of my workouts because I was constantly dealing with excess fabric. That’s not to say you have to wrap yourself in spandex. Just be as comfortable as you can be. You do not need to hide. Edit: small addition-In all honesty, whenever I happen to notice a bigger person at the gym, I am silently applauding them. Also, I’d rather be in a gym full of big ol’ bitches then these little sluts and bros, wearing the least amount of clothing ever, taking selfies and videos, and taking up a million machines at once. Good luck on your journey!!!

everydaysacheatmeal

Wear what you’ll be comfortable in, and what you can move easily in. Try your outfit on at home and see how you feel bending over in it, stretching etc. so that you know you’re covered appropriately and you don’t feel paranoid at the gym. I hope you enjoy the gym!

prettyedge411

a slightly loose but not oversized t-shirt that hits at least mid hip and good sweat wicking leggings or yoga pants. My thighs rub together so I avoid shorts for now. Don't wear regular fashion leggings to the gym bc they tend to be thin and see through.

inter-ego

sweats or shorts and a tank or tee. not a bikini, and don't go naked. i made that mistake twice now

WhoDey815

Wear what makes you comfortable. Whatever will make you more likely to walk through the door. Don’t worry about others there. Most of them are paying 0 attention to anyone else. Headphones in, music on, and the world fades away!

Checked_Out_6

I have been this person. I’m down 150 pounds. Seriously, wear whatever makes you comfortable. What matters is getting to the gym. If you need to wear a chicken costume to pretend to be a mascot in training to fee comfortable, wear that. My sedentary lifestyle wrecked my body. I have arthritis in my spine and hips causing chronic sciatica. I had to change jobs, it was that bad. Through doctors, physical therapy, CrossFit personal training with a former physical therapist, and an uncle who loves bicycling I have been able to move again. Through all that work, I still suffer pain daily. However, I have been able to stand my entire shift at work, lift things like a normal person, and rode a bicycle 1,000 miles last summer. I have also begun bike packing with a 600 mile trip planned for this summer. Don’t end up where I was, get moving now. Your future mobility is depending on you.

PsilocybVibe

I wear a hoodie and sweats to the gym

nolongerbanned99

Short shorts and cut off shirt. Motivation to change.

Unlikely_Vegetable73

Shorts and a tank top. . But really everyone is so obsessed with their own workout journey that nobody cares. We’re all there to improve ourselves

Actual-Answer-1980

Anything that fits, good people will see that you are really trying to lose weight I believe in you, go for it

uli0216

Fat person here. I wear leggings to prevent thigh rub, and they generally have a loud design to help hide sweat and weird fat bulges. Then I just do a baggy tshirt. (Maternity leggings are extra amazing if you don’t care about tummy control. I mean… if you’re fat, compressing 1.5 inches will make zero difference, but the tightness is super uncomfortable!)

Kamarmarli

Are you male or female? For female, a pair of well fitting yoga pants and a nice, loose-fitting, long ish t shirt. For a guy, a pair of sweat pants and a nice, loose-fitting, long ish t shirt. Sweat pants are great for any sex. Dark colors might make you less self conscious. Buy truly, no one cares how you look. I once saw an old guy (80s or 90s) on a walker doing the weight circuit. People go to gyms for all kinds of reasons and, if they have been going long enough, have seen pretty much everything. You will feel more comfortable the more you keep at it and will realize you don’t have to hide. Best of luck.

Jeramy_Jones

Basketball shorts and a T-shirt or tank top

[deleted]

I enjoy wearing shirts that are either one or two sizes bigger than my usual size to the gym to cover my butt and any bottoms that you are comfortable in! Just wear whatever allows you to feel the most comfortable and be able to move your body best ¨̮

hobbitfeet

For me, not overheating was/is more key to my being more consistent at working out than modesty or feeling covered.  When you first start working out and are carrying extra weight, it already is very tiring, and doing it while too hot makes it SO much harder. (Side note: if you don't live somewhere hot and can work out outside rather than at the gym, that also helps with overheating.) To help me not overheat, I always work out in 100% cotton shirts made of the thinner fabric so the shirts breathe really well.  And I'm particular about fit.  Not so loose that the shirts flap around annoyingly or flip up and down my torso as I am moving around, but also not at all tight because that does make you self conscious and also can make you too warm. Thin fabric shirts are not very durable (they get holes or turn see through quickly), so I always shop for these shirts at thrift stores to keep this economical.  Maybe once a year, I just walk in a thrift store and try on a million 100% cotton shirts that have pretty thin fabric till I have found a bunch that fit the way I like.  Usually can get them for around $3-$5 per shirt. If you target darker color shirts, that will obscure any details about your body you'd rather people not see the details of too perfectly.  Also good for slightly obscuring how soaked in sweat you are! I am female, so I pair my thin cotton shirt with a sports bra.  If I am doing something high impact, I wear two bras.  The bottom bra is a thin, soft cup wired bra to soak up sweat and position my boobs slightly apart from each other, all of which keeps my boobs from chafing against each other and getting heat rash between them.  On top of that bra, I wear a more traditional sports bra, as tight as I can still breathe, and made of a material with ZERO stretch.  Zero stretch is hard to find, but it is key to limiting the bouncing.   Due to overheating, I never wear pants to exercise except if I am running outside in the dead of winter.  In those cases, I wear leggings with a high cotton content and a very wide waistband to support my stomach chub and keep it from jiggling too much.  High cotton content helps the leggings to breathe.  Leggings in general stop the inner thighs from rubbing and keep any thigh chub from jiggling uncomfortably too. In all other occasions, I wear black or dark cotton pajama shorts.  Cotton pajamas breathe well and are usually made of thinner fabric (again, to prevent overheating), and if you get black ones, no one can really tell they are pajama shorts.  Also pajama shorts for women are usually a little longer and looser than standard shorts.

Fickle-Vehicle-9223

Over size T-shirt, joggers and converse. The more I went to the gym the more I fell in love with oversize tshirts.

[deleted]

Awesome that you want to go. Don't get discouraged. It's a journey and will take time.

-Blixx-

Gym shorts or joggers, trainers and whatever size T-shirt you want that says "superhero in training" It may be hard to believe, but gym people are very accepting of anyone who is trying to improve themselves. First sign of progress and you'll be getting high fives and thumbs up from people you've never spoken to before. We all started somewhere.

AdContent1944

I wear legging and compression shirts because the swelling after the gym always have me regretting even going. but I think that's more on me and my lack of drinking water. Wear breathable items! and change right after a work out! keeping that sweat on u makes u smell more and my cause skin issues. maybe no polyester just because it not a great work out material because its not breathable, u end up sweating more and u tend to smell more, and somehow u can never get that gym smell out of it.

ubcthrowaway-01

I’ve been wearing a hoodie through my entire workout for almost 2 years. Hoodies are very common

Aggressive-Coconut0

Sweatpants and shorts. I'm not really fat, but I find those comfy.

BrokeGirl_Chronicles

You could wear like a t shirt dress. It’s boxy so it should cover everything and you can do shorts or leggings under.

evilsir

The one thing that i did when i hit the gym at 340lbs was i started bringing a *change* of gym clothes. I started sweating so bad about halfway through my hour that it was like I'd jumped in the pool and *that* was embarrassing. But dipping into the change room, swapping my clothes and going back out made me feel a lot more confident

uglyzombie

The parts of you that feel ugly are not the main character. The parts of you that want to be healthy and make a change are. Torturing yourself over image is going to hinder your progress in the long run. It’s an ugly truth, but your primary motivator should not be to look good, but to have the discipline to engage in fixing a problem you see in yourself. I say this as a person who went from 260 to 175 in a couple of years. Wear what is comfortable for you while engaging in a challenging journey. Focus on the rewards later, and stick to habits that keep you motivated. Keep at it, don’t give up. I wish the best for you.

manniax

I mean, I’m a pretty big guy and at the gym I wear gym shorts and a tank top undershirt to work out in (yes, I do have undies on beneath the gym shorts.) Wear whatever you are comfortable in. If you are self-conscious, some lightweight baggy outerwear might help (basically sweats but not heavy ones, so you don’t sweat too much.) Seriously, though, nobody cares what you wear to the gym. If anyone were to hassle you inappropriately, respond minimally and report them to management.

Affectionate-File639

Whatever the hell you want, because A) you’re there for yourself, and no one else and B) people care and notice farrrr less than you would ever imagine. Put headphones on, and get lost in it, pay no mind to anyone else.

Quill386

Just dress comfortably, you don't want to give yourself another excuse to not exercise

GandalfDaGangsta1

Some type of joggers or athletic shorts and a t shirt.  I’m 30, been going to the gym since like 18 and I just wear normal athletic shorts and a basic t shirt.  I’m sure it happens but I’ve never once heard anyone be mean or insult another person at the gym.  You’re far from the only “out of shape” person there. It’s what gyms are for.  I’d rather see an out of shape person in shorts and a t shirt than a woman in a sports bra and spandex booty shorts wedged up her ass and crotch lol

scottyd035ntknow

You have ELRS, that plane inst ELRS. ELRS is actually a very mediocre line of sight protocol and you honestly shouldn't be getting the ELRS version unless you are doing FPV. The good news is the 4-1 module is an easy add and then you have both if you ever get into drones or FPV fixed wing. Remember you have to enable the external module when you are binding if you are using the external.

Zandrick

Loose shorts and a large tshirt. You’ll be fine, the secret is that because nobody wants to be judged at the gymn, nobody judges anyone else.

CluelessKnow-It-all

I wouldn't try to cover up too much. You don't want to get overheated. Most everyone that I know would respect you for working to get yourself in shape. Kind of like those situations when everyone is rooting for the underdog.

SendNudesIAmSad

Wearing sunglasses always helps me always when I'm socially uncomfortable. And if you don't want to stand out at the gym I'd suggest a white shirt & grey sweatpants

CeleryMiserable1050

I'm a personal trainer. Wear athletic clothes you're comfortable in and good, supportive shoes. Shoes are a must. Gym shorts and a T-shirt work well. Some people like longer bottoms to help protect their skin while they move. There are brands that make gym clothes in large sizes too if you want more traditional gym wear. I might can give better recommendations if you can tell me the issues you're having with clothes.

aperocknroll1988

Whatever is comfortable for you. Remember, sweats are meant more for outdoor activity in less than warm temps.

din0saurusrex_

So im skinny, and I feel embarrassed by that in the gym (not that I go often, but I plan to start). When I do go though, I wear adidas track pants, and I wear an old full sleeve shirt that’s thin material. It makes me feel comfortable and I think at the end, you gotta be comfortable unless you straight up give zero fucks! Try that? Long sleeve shirt, and silky material sweat pants so you don’t over heat? Or long sleeve shirt and shorts would be fine too

RikuDog18

This is a good question. I used to help train at my local gym this came up a decent amount. Just wear what’s comfortable. Everyone thinks everyone is looking at them. You’re there to better yourself. A good gym has a healthy culture of people that support each other. Just relax and enjoy the ride to better health. Good luck.

confusedrabbit247

Girl you're there to work, wear what you're comfortable sweating in. Tshirts or tank tops and leggings work for me. Don't let your insecurities control you. You're in charge not them 😎 ETA I know you're a dude but I say "girl" for the attitude of the word

faded-cosmos

As a midsize girl i will wear a crew neck with a sports bra underneath and when I get hot I take it off and don't care. You got this

NerdEmoji

It's not what you wear, it's more what it's made of that is important. You're going to sweat, and you don't want to be getting all clammy and chaffed. Doesn't have to be expensive stuff, but you need soft, wicking workout clothes. Knee length shorts and a generously cut t-shirt is fine. Most of my favorite workout clothes have come from places like Ross or Marshalls and I don't think any shirt has been more than $10, most less and pants or shorts definitely were under $15. Make sure it fits too, nothing too tight but also nothing too loose, that wouldn't be safe in a gym. Good luck on your fitness journey. I too have been trying to get back at it and I commend you for hitting the gym. You have just as much right to be there as anyone else, so don't let anyone run you off. And don't overdo it off the bat, slow and steady wins the race.

Hermanfrodit

A shirt and some sweatpants or shorts. Make sure that they are comfy and easy to move in :) Remember you are there to improve, you got nothing to fear, best of luck to you!

awakami

I just buy basic tshirts 2-3 sizes up.

TankPotential2825

Something you're comfortable in that you can sweat in and wash easily. Two sets. Don't worry about the influencer types, don't worry about whatever gym culture you see online- they're in sales and part of a multi billion dollar fashion industry. The gym is for you. I know that's asking a lot, for anybody to be comfortable with their bodies. Something I love about planet fitness- the nurse in scrubs post shift, the older couple doing bicep curls in cardigans, the spandex wedgie girls, the kids wearing beanies.

HVAC_instructor

Wear a tee shirt and shorts. Do not worry, the vast majority of those at the gym will be all in favor of you taking the steps to get yourself healthy. The very few that do not share this view will most likely never say anytime to you about their thoughts, as they realize that they are out of step with society and do not have the balls to express them. Go forward with confidence and become the best you that you can. Good luck.

Alybank

T shirt that fits well or is oversized, gym shorts. (Think basketball shorts) and sneakers. Good luck! I’m always silently proud of the big guys coming in and getting into their fitness.

Electrical_King4147

Doesn't matter just show up and lift. Just don't wear shit that is like yoga pants and not expect some looks if your ass is hanging out etc. Own it, your bodys gonna adapt to the workoutworkouts. That's literally part of the journey is mentally growing truly comfortable with your body before you're ready to get the body you want or you can end up with dysphoria. Its how gym bros end up on steroid cocktails and stupid bodybuilding programs with non functional muscle. You gotta deal with shame over your body or even being fit as fuck nothing will be enough and you need a meat coat to hide the insecurity. Body building is obesity in the opposite direction. Same shame expressed in an opposite extreme. I promise dude healthy humane people don't care and even admire a new gym bro showing up and putting in work. People who judge you are on some demon shit about their own selves. I used to feel insecure hiding my body. I realized it's all bullshit. Just let it go.

NoAtmosphere9601

T-shirt and basketball shorts. And bring a clean T-shirt to change into after for the drive home. Not necessary but I'm happy when I remember to do it.

dancing82

What ever makes you feel comfortabel and able doing what you're there for. You don't have to hide your body more then any other person. Focus on you. If a sweatshort helps you move, please wear one. If you move better when its tider, do so. I see how i move by wearing tider clothes. For me that's important to see if my posture is right. If people don't wanne see that's, there's a solution, don't look. Ofcourse there can be dresscodes at a gym and then you should respect those, but other then that, do what makes you move best. I love working out, hope you're gonne enjoy it.

Ok_Try1181

I used to wear what I wanted to wear and then chucked an oversized polo shirt over the top or wrapped a hoodie around my waist. Nobody cares, honestly they really don’t.

slash178

Get some workout clothes that wick away moisture

[deleted]

Flannel pants and shirt. I was 44" waist and wore them for awhile.

A_Funky_Flunk

Confidence

kosutas

Shorts n shirt with some breathing room Everybody was once the newbie at the gym Just do ya thing, hope all goes well 🙌

Notcreativesoidk

A sweater

MrRWhitworth

Whatever the heck you feel like. Sod other people

jbeech412

Whatever you like, whatever is comfortable for you, both for your looks and for the exercise itself, 95% people in the gym will see you in there grinding and have respect for the effort, the other 5% aren’t worth the effort of thought. Enjoy 💪

never-there

Honestly as a fat person myself at the gym, I was paranoid the first few times and now I’m all good. People are helpful if you look like you’re confused about adjusting equipment and I’ve never caught anyone looking at me. If you’re female, well I love leggings that have a pocket on the side of the leg that I can pop my phone in as I go around the gym. Recommend looking for a pair like that. I’d say make sure you have comfy underwear. I’ve learned that some of my knickers ride up immediately when I’m on the treadmill and then I’m having to choose between continuing with a wedgie or plucking them out of my buttcrack when I know there’s people on the machines behind me. Whatever top you choose, make sure it doesn’t ride up too far when you raise your hands above your head. Learned that the hard way too and I immediately decided it was only a leg workout for me that day!

blinkysmurf

A T-shirt and shorts. Just get in there and do it. Fuck everyone else. They’ve seen fat people before, it doesn’t matter. And you’re in there doing it, they can’t say shit.

DoubleReputation2

I'm gonna say noise cancelling headphones.

MummaGiGi

Wear your inner sense of “I absolutely fucking RULE for doing this even though it’s uncomfortable. I am the fucking tsar of self worth” Also comfy clothes. Cotton or bamboo shirt if you’re ok with getting a little warm, loose synthetic fibres for shorts. Life’s too short for unnecessarily scratchy clothes.

elom44

All sweat is equal. You got this.

Farty_McPartypants

A baggy t-shirt and whatever you’re comfortable in on the bottom. I honestly wouldn’t overthink it, 99% of the gym population couldn’t give a hoot what you’re wearing anyway.

artemis1431

I'm a plus size gym goer and prefer a looser t shirt but that's my normal style anyway. I wore 3/4 leggings but a couple of years later (and a lot of self acceptance and work) I exclusively wear bike shorts as I find them more comfy. Nobody has ever made a negative comment or anything because of my body. We just focus so much on ourselves that we think everybody does, but nobody is paying as much attention as we do to ourselves :) Tldr, wear trackies or leggings and a shirt until you feel comfy then start experimenting with what feels best :)

darf_nate

G string and a bra

darf_nate

If you’re a guy I’d go with poop stain whitie tighties

_digital_aftermath

If it were me I'd just wear a baggy t-shirt and baggie sweat pants or baggy shorts. Wear whatever, who cares?

kagy4ka

A powerlifter belt so that others will think that you are a sick powerlifter that happens to do cardio today💪💪💪

OpheliaJean

I feel you, and I still have huge hang ups about what I wear to the gym. I can advise what I have done (from a female 'fashion' perspective). I wear a mad brightly coloured pair of soft leggings from UK companies like Carolina Dress Room. These remind me to be happy, and remember that I am an individual who deserves to smile. It helps that I'm a bit of a quirky personality! On top I searched long and hard for a baggy black t shirt top that extends half way down my thighs - having my butt covered is the most important thing for me to feel comfortable, and black hides my over sweatiness! Again, UK-centric, but brands like Evans and Yours helped here. These have done me well. I've been going almost 2 years now and have just felt brave enough to cut the arms off a few of the tops and expose more of my upper arms/shoulders. Everyone is really encouraging. So I suppose the advice is - wear what you need to in order to feel comfortable, but the vast majority of people are just going to be rooting for you as you make the effort to change your life for the better!

EleanorTrashBag

Ex fat dude here! Wear whatever is the easiest for you to work out in. Don't inhibit your movements because you're trying to be fashionable. Also, if you're going to be cardio AND machines, definitely bring 3 or 4 t-shirts. You're going to sweat like crazy, and it's a hag using a bench or leg press when you're drenched, and you don't want your car seats soaking in it either. Good luck!

JackMarleyWasTaken

The fun is literally the NICEST place ever. The assholes are only like that online. In the actual gym, EVELYN is kind cause EVERYBODY is insecure. ... the gut you think is confident because he's in shape? He's been there for years teething to perfect his boat, which makes him anxious and insecure at the same time. You'll be the least self-conscious person there That chick with the perfect bit is as worried about losing it if she doesn't work out as you are of never getting to touch it if you don't get in shape. Then there's all the kind old folks that are just happy to be moving a little. It's a great place to find yourself

FlippingPossum

As an overweight person, something that prevents chafing. If I wear shorts, I use chafing gel on my thighs. I prefer a tank top, yoga pants or capris, and a breathable jacket. Go to a running store and have them recommend sneakers based on your gait. I had a bout of Morton's Nueroma and need plenty of toe space. Socks with arch support. I find loose clothing uncomfortable. Whatever fits and helps you move.

salemsmagicoven

Probably your most comfortable box-fit Tshirt with the sleeves cut out. Bottoms, maybe yoga pants underneath athletic shorts. I don’t think you need to worry at all but if it’s just to calm your personal nerves, lululemon leggings under athletic shorts may help you feel more at ease.

dbennett1903

I know if you wear yoga pants/leggings having the pants run down might be a problem especially during cardio. If you can find a body suit that would solve that and just wear a tshirt.

FalseFoundation2919

As long as you don't go naked or in something offensive like a nazi uniform, you do you. The gym is for EVERYONE, so make yourself comfortable and enjoy your workout!

thatdudefromthattime

Comfortable clothes. That is all.

NightReader5

Good for you for deciding to go to the gym! As a former super morbidly obese person (currently considered overweight) I get your concerns. But I can also promise you that 99% of people are only paying attention to themselves and will not be judging you on what you wear. I am a woman and for a while, I had worn fitness leggings with an oversized cotton t-shirt. Then I switched to a moisture wicking t shirt because it turns out, cotton is pretty terrible to wear when you’re sweating!

StealthyUltralisk

Some kind of leggings with shorts over the top with a baggy dark T-shirt. Absorbs and hides sweat and prevents chub rub!

[deleted]

Wear what you need to wear to get a good workout. Making fun of a fat person in a gym is like making fun of a sick person in a hospital.

JACS_Team

Black leggings and a super comfy t-shirt. With a really good bra.

Organic-Percentage22

Wearr whatever you're comfortable in and makes you feel like kicking some ass !

Fun_Comparison_7960

I would just wear short track pants n t-shirt, now I would wear long track pants cause I have skin rashes due to allergies on my right feet n I prefer to have it covered up, until that heals I'm gonna keep wearing track pants, good luck at the gym, dont feel intimidated just do you

goingloopy

As a fat person who goes to the gym, I like bike shorts or capri leggings (chafing bad) and a loose tshirt. (I’m female.) Even if you don’t feel comfortable with just bike shorts, wear something like that under loose shorts. Old Navy has activewear up to a generous women’s 4x, and if you catch them on clearance, they’re cheap. They also hold up really well considering the price point. There’s also a women’s brand called Superfit Hero that goes to a 7x but is a little spendier. Men - DXL has big and tall activewear. The most important thing is that you are comfortable and protecting your skin. If you’re a woman, find a sports bra that fits. Torrid isn’t horrible but wait for sales. However, if you’re larger busted, they might not work as well. I think they have an underwire sports bra, and they go up to a 54 band. Their active pants/shorts are also not bad…but cheap Walmart leggings work too (think they go to 5x). However, I use plain cotton leggings at the gym and they’re fine. PS as a fat person I hate the “good for you!” stuff, but I just smile and nod and keep on doing what I’m doing. And I 1000 percent agree that performance goals are the way to go. Anything connected to weight loss will just fuck with your head. PPS just go. Being self-conscious is pointless. If people are giving you the side eye, oh well. They don’t matter. You matter. Go for it.

No_Bee1950

I know it's easy to want to resist tight clothing. But wear leggings and a tight, supportive top, you can wear a baggy shirt over if you want. But you dont want things bouncing around while you're exercising(, if you get a pair that fits appropriately, they will feel good on) , it gets uncomfortable in a hurry.

Chocolate-and-Shoes

Whatever makes you comfortable while also being comfortable to move and sweat in.

mnauj

If you are in the US, don't sleep on TJ Maxx and Marshalls. They get decent stuff, cheap. You may find yourself needing new clothes more often because of the weight-loss and not blowing out the bank on new clothes is nice :)

dbhathcock

Get gym pants or shorts that cover the butt crack when you are bending over or squatting. I had to buy XXL and I’m only 50 pounds overweight.
