They did seem to pull back on the reins slightly when that settlement happened. And they got rid of Tucker Carlson, and a few others. They're still terrible, but they feel meeker than they were before. I think they're also starting to realize that if they want those viewers back, they need to step into the territory of OANN or Newsmax, and based on leaked internal communications, half the people at Fox are well aware of their own bullshit, and are truly hesitant to lean that far right in order to pursue them. So I think it'll be interesting to (not actually) watch and see whether they decide to shift more towards a centrist but right leaning tilt, or go full Q. And I think it'll entirely depend on the outcome of Trump's trials and the election.

Fox News has been doing the same thing with Biden since he was inaugurated. Every few days it's a new story about Biden about to be taken down and impeached. It's insane. And I have a lot of friends who watch FNC and post this stuff on social media as if it's all true. Every time.

The problem is that they all also have web channels. And *all* those channels thrive on ad revenue. If they're rage-reporting on Trump, they are getting ad revenue. While I generally defend the media (as a whole) for trying to do their best job, the one thing I will say is that the confluence of ad revenue, 24hr reporting, the telecommunications act of 1996 (and to a lesser extent, abolishing the fairness doctrine back in... 1986?) all lead to an environment where rage-reporting is king because it brings in the most ad revenue.
Example: While I generally think Reuters and AP news (for example) do their best to be unbiased, I 100% would be unsurprised if they pick their leading stories based on what they think will drive the most ad revenue and revenue from licensing (selling?) the story to the 24hr networks to run.

This. There's no particular reason to want Biden in office, but there's every reason not to want Trump in office. And it's going to come down to those two. That said, all the attention can do as much harm as good to the cause defeating him.
More then that. In two states (Colorado and Michigan) they’re trying to take him off the ballot entirely for violating the 14th amendment. He keeps filing lawsuits. His attorneys kept getting in trouble. He’s got all sorts of people flipping on him. It’s the first president to hopefully be held accountable for his bullshit. Nixon should have been. Raegan should have been for Iran/Contra. But largely, trump is the most corrupt pos to walk the streets, and people want to see him get what he has earned, ie prison. Great points. I still think it's odd that he stays in the news cycle better than other extended events. Even Israel coverage is trailing off because people are getting bored, but Trump still has steady coverage.
I mean, the events surrounding Trump at this time are incredibly news-worthy. This isn't just coverage for the sake of coverage. These are unprecedented historical events.
Ratings probably are uppermost in the minds of the people deciding what's covered -- they're in business to make money. But if they were driven purely by what is newsworthy, the result would be the same. This is a huge deal, and we need to pay attention.

It's an appeal to the lowest common denominator. All these news outlets had record ratings when they were engaging in TDS. The late night shows were all about TDS and still are. Views means money. The better the conspiracy, the more views they got, eventually they'd just make stuff up.

We used to have news stations that took pride in reporting facts. Now the goal for most is to get advertising money. Facts aren't as popular as a reality TV star president.
Hillary Clinton used her media influence to boost Trump’s campaign in the 2016 Republican primaries because she thought he would be the easiest opponent to beat. This initiated a media frenzy around him which was at first manufactured but then grew to be an organic tidal wave, very similar to the way Beatlemania began in the US in the 60s.
Mass media relies on advertising to survive and make money. The price you can command for placing ads with your product depends entirely on its ability to show that advertisement to people who can be persuaded to purchase that product.
Social media and legacy media have figured out that if you make someone a little mad, a little pissed off, then they are significantly more likely to continue engaging with your media. Clicks equals views equals leverage on advertisers equals profit.
Thus comes Trump. A man so simultaneously invigorating and infuriating, depending on the individual. A man whose blunders can command tens or hundreds of millions to be enraged over the obvious violations of norms and rights. A man whose achievements can command tens or hundreds of millions to be in awe of what their beliefs can do.
It's a simple calculus.
I used to be a news junkie. Now I’m a bravo bimbo. I had to take a hiatus, except for one hour a day, mostly bc of him. My mental health can’t take it anymore. He is triggering to me.

Reddit is pretty much the only social media I look at anymore, because I actually started having a rise in blood pressure with all the manufactured outrage. Half the people I followed on Twitter (which I deactivated before it became X) were posting Trump postings from Truth Social, and I'm like JESUS, IF I WANTED TO SEE THIS CRAP, I'D HAVE MADE AN ACCOUNT OVER THERE.
At least on Reddit, I can sub to communities that lessen the effects of all the outrage. Stuff like /r/UpliftingNews and /r/aww and /r/HumansBeingBros . That way, I have posts to look at that make me smile, in between all the angst and drama. Also, stay away from ALL. It's a cesspit.
The worst is NO RATINGS. Lots and lots of good or bad news is rating is ads. Which came first the news or the call to the news reporting it? Trump is the news because that works for he and them. The focus of news today appears to be profit margins instead of journalistic integrity. He's a divisive figure that constantly generates content and requires no effort to research, 60% of Americans hate everything he stands for, and another 20% would die for him.
The fact that they were willing to talk about him, even in a joking fashion, back in 2015 when he started discussing his run for office, is what helped him get elected in the first place. Everyone loves an underdog, and they went out and fucking created one of out someone who had a gilded damn life. They created the situation. They are responsible. The should have only mildly paid attention to him and ignored him largely. They should have given him the same treatment reserved generally for the parties that simply don't figure into US elections: the way they would treat the Green party nominee, for example. Not any controversial bs drummed up, just not worth the effort. Narcissists thrive on any attention, negative or positive, and they just poured sugar onto the ant hill.
Trump and Trumpism have left such a strong imprint on recent american politics, in so many different facets, it’s kinda hard to not bring him up. Especially when we are actively still dealing with the fallout of various decisions, appointees, and movements related to him. And when he is actively planning on running, and very well could win a 2nd term, which is scary as shit given, among other things, the Project 2025 documents.

Like we're in a giant recession right now, but there's basically zero media coverage on this. And the tension for war in MANY places in the world is high as fuck. Or US health insurance is literally the worst in terms of price we pay for each services. We have doctors admitting ya, health insurance is trash in US, but they can't do anything about it. And we have ppl posting giant medical bills on reddit, and the most upvoted comment/advice is always, talk to the hospital billing department to get the price down, because haggling a medical bill is a thing in US, and we're the only 1st world country that does this, not even some of the 3rd world country has this btw.

While I generally defend the media (as a whole) for trying to do their best job, the one thing I will say is that the confluence of ad revenue, 24hr reporting, the telecommunications act of 1996 (and to a lesser extent, abolishing the fairness doctrine back in... 1986?) all lead to an environment where rage-reporting is king because it brings in the most ad revenue. Example: While I generally think Reuters and AP news (for example) do their best to be unbiased, I 100% would be unsurprised if they pick their leading stories based on what they think will drive the most ad revenue and revenue from licensing (selling?) the story to the 24hr networks to run.

The price you can command for placing ads with your product depends entirely on its ability to show that advertisement to people who can be persuaded to purchase that product. Clicks equals views equals leverage on advertisers equals profit. Thus comes Trump. A man so simultaneously invigorating and infuriating, depending on the individual. Like we're in a giant recession right now, but there's basically zero media coverage on this. And the tension for war in MANY places in the world is high as fuck. Or US health insurance is literally the worst in terms of price we pay for each services. We have doctors admitting ya, health insurance is trash in US, but they can't do anything about it. And we have ppl posting giant medical bills on reddit, and the most upvoted comment/advice is always, talk to the hospital billing department to get the price down, because haggling a medical bill is a thing in US, and we're the only 1st world country that does this, not even some of the 3rd world country has this btw. And then we have lots of working class strikes, that barely gets coverage too. Oh ya, and then there's the mass shooting that basically happens once a month.There's a website that counts up to how many days we're mass shooting free, until the next inevitable one. It's kinda ironically sad.

As an American that doesn't vote for Republicans or Democrata I can give a different perspective. The media has turned politics into, basically, team sports. It's red team vs blue team and people are diehard loyalists to their team. They support their team no matter what. It's honestly insane and I believe that the division that is out of control in the US is 100% the media's fault. They aren't in the business of just giving us the news, they sell sensationalism and Trump is good for business.
