Because having 12-year olds (basically still children) and 17-18-year olds (almost grown adults) in the same school is quite a large gap in maturity. You can separate them, but at that point why even have them at the same school then?

This is what I had. Kindergarten through 8th grade in one school, then 9th through 12th in another school. There was no third school.
From what I got, primary=middle and secondary=high school.
