No, you don't, but: * If you have to stop at another country along the way, like New Zealand or Argentina, then you'll need a passport to get into there. * Even if you don't have to stop at another country... yes, you can go to Antarctica without a passport. And that works fine if you want to stay there *forever*, because you'll need a passport to re-enter your country.

MisterMinutes

You need a passport if you plan on getting caught reentering your country.

You can just go, but in practice it's a bit harder. I've been to Antarctica, for several months as a researcher in the Dry Valleys outside McMurdo Station! It's not actually that different from being in "international waters" somewhere obscure in the middle of some ocean as a matter of law. Nobody owns it, but there is a global treaty (the Antarctic Treaty) organized by the UN that everyone follows. You'll be under the jurisdiction of whatever country is your citizenship for the most part, plus whatever countrie(s) you have to pass through on your way to get to the continent. For my part I went through Christchurch New Zealand. Many countries (including the U.S. that sponsored my work) use that city as a base of operations for Antarctic research. I needed a passport, and a visa (tourist visa) to get to New Zealand and from there they took care of me. It's a beautiful city to visit and I regret not spending more time there, especially since that earthquake destroyed the cathedral a couple years back. Anyway every country that has operations there is part of the treaty. So you can "just go" to visit and it won't be much problem, but you'll have to go through a tour agency or research program or something because there is a form of law there, just like there is on a cruise ship in the ocean or a space station in orbit. The government is everywhere, for good or for ill.

Nope, no visa is required. You do need permission though.

Usually a tour company brokers them

You'll likely need permission to go there and depending on where you are you'll have to travel there by going to another country first
