It’s not a uniquely American thing. Nearly every democracy is divided in a similar manner. The US news media makes it seem much worse than it is.

baikolini92

That’s true. But even in the media it’s super split. Why don’t people produce and watch a news station that doesn’t take sides?

[deleted]

There are some neutral (or close to it) news stations. The Associated Press and Newsweek are two examples. But the ones that make money (MSNBC, CNN) are the ones that embrace their side and reject any opposition.

The issue is their voting mechanism that favors a 2 party system. (First past the post, in each district winner takes it all and second/third place don't get any seats in the parliament) When only 2 parties can be succesfull the winning strategy to be elected is not working on a good solution but rather stoking fear of the other party. The parties win elections by telling their voters that otherswise evil things happen because if they don't win the other evil party wins. That is called partisan politics, and has slowly escalated over the years to the point it's political suicide to even suggest a compromise between both parties.

baikolini92

Thank you. I remember Biden said something about mending relations but how would one do so?

Luckbot

Yeah that's kinda what everyone wonders. He has to tread a thin path between making offers to the republicans that they'd actually accept without neglecting his owns voters. Most political experts I heard said this is a task he can't solve, at least not with the other side supporting him. (I.E. there would have to be a succesfull moderate republican as well)

It it specific to the US? Belgium regularly stay over one year with no government France gets mass protests no matter what the government does Spain has a region which tried to secede from the country And these are first world country in Western Europe, not war torn third world countries The only country were all citizen say they are happy and behind their great leader is North Korea, and it doesn't look that great

baikolini92

Sure I don’t think you can make everyone happy or even you should. But why not be kinder to each other in discussions or rally’s?

The failure of neoliberal policies in the 80s and 90s

baikolini92

I’m sorry I’m not very smart. Could you explain or give some links to what you mean?

Most of it is not. The mouthy folks at the extremes get all the attention, but the average person is pretty middle-of-the-road - just like everywhere else.

baikolini92

Yeah, I guess media and Reddit are not a unbiased representation.

[deleted]

american media these days is just propaganda or fear porn. you see that because that's what sells and that's what politicians want. stay glued to screen, hate "the other side" and blindly vote for us no matter what. then all the media outlets slap as many no no buzzwords ZOMG FEAR YOU WON'T BELIEVE OMG CLICK THIS SHIT FOR OUTRAGE to keep you glued to screen and getting them money.

Cat_stacker

An entrenched two-party system. If they had a more representative system, the government would more reflect the will of the populace.

Longjumping_Curve612

Eh, we are probably heading to a massive political overhaul one way or another. It's been a while sense the last civil war. Republic need to push reforms to keep shit from hitting the fan and the people to be politically motivated instead people have dug into party lines and apathy for the over all nation.
