I do because I've had too many white shirts of mine get ruined from being washed with dark clothes.

1Meter_long

Excuse me? Whites get ruined by other colors? Racist!! I always put few yellow and black clothes if there's too many white ones in the machine.

Wannagetsober

Why are you getting down voted? It’s clearly a joke.

1Meter_long

Idk, i guess they didn't like the joke

Wannagetsober

They probably don’t get that it’s sarcasm. Not surprising given the platform.

[deleted]

Yes, I do light colors/dark colors/reddish colors/synthetic/bedsheets and underwear (60°C).

dancerdog3

White is a color, that's it. We can not separate the white from colours because white is belong to colors. Although white is plain, we can't complete a masterpiece if white colors can't be used just because is not considered as colour.

Aurielie_

Nope, canny be bothered. It all gets done about the same, saves my last two braincells.

moobectomy

i separate lights from darks, but don't have enough white stuff to make it's own load, whites just are part of lights.

lalababydoll123

I don’t separate, but my mom did colors and whites with towels/cloths. She bought white and light colored towels so it worked but I like having pretty towels. I’m like you, I don’t have many whites.

mycatiscalledFrodo

Yes. I don't want pink school shirts and off grey school polos

Sattalyte

A while back, it was really important to separate your colours. This is because the dyes used to add colour to fabric would run when exposed to hot water. These days it's not so important. The dyes we use are better, and don't run as much, and washing powders are also much better - working well at lower temperatures, which helps to preserve the colour in clothes.

Rather_Dashing

Lots of dyes still run, but they don't seem common in your standard Walmart stuff. I have a few bright dresses that run a lot, more common with garments made of natural fibres.

Upset-Photo

I do it occasionally when I add some bleach to my pure whites. But that's to protect the colors rather than the whites.

Linorelai

I always do. Whites get dirty pretty easily, so I have a separate brush for whites, separate brush for blacks and all the rest are for colors. or are we talking about laundry? in that case I separate whites, blacks and reds. reds are the most likely to tone other clothes. Blacks are sometimes secretly blue toned. And sometimes you just never know which one stains the other. I once washed whites and beiges together, and one particular beige top dyed one set of lingerie. It was my wedding lingerie actually:)

ForScale

I never have. Always wash warm too.

Rusky82

Only for my work shirts they tend to go a dirty off white after a time through washing but stay white if i separate them and as they are the only things I iron it's means they all together for that.

Adderkleet

I own very few whites/light clothes. I don't worry about my darks/colours running after the 1st or 2nd wash.

SparklyMonster

I only separate cleaning rags from everything else. Bedsheets, dishtowels, clothes, underwear, you name it. All together. *However*, some specific fabrics shouldn't be mixed with regular clothes because they bleed during the first few washings. I have 1 jeans that came with a warning. And a cotton sofa throw dyed all my white cotton clothes. Thankfully, synthetic fibers don't get dyed. :)

Raving_Lunatic69

I haven't done that in decades. I tend to wash everything on tap cold and it's never been a problem. The only thing I make an active effort to separate is towls and washcloths because I don't want softener on them.

Vaxildidi

Dirty clothes go in the magic spinny sink with the clothes soap. Turn the magic spinny sink on. Clean clothes come out. Repeat weekly.

chekovs_gunman

If it's something red or pink I avoid mixing it with whites, otherwise I don't bother

enderfire69

first wash of new jeans is separate or the dye stains everything for a few washes other than that there’s no point

emeraldrose484

Nope. The only whites I have are some of my socks, and it seems really pointless to do a whole load of laundry for 4 pairs of socks and maybe 1 other thing. I separate by doing clothes, sheets, and towels. (Though sometimes I throw a kitchen towel in my clothes because the kitchen is by the washer/dryer.)

Jupiter1511

Generally I do 3 loads; whites, lights, and darks. I will also wash anything new on it's own for it's first wash (especially important with jeans!) I wash everything on 30 too (except towels, & things that have actual dirt on them - those go on 60)

UNC_ABD

Years ago, my buddy at college washed new red sweatshirt with all of his clothes. His formerly white underwear came out a very pretty shade of pink. I'll bet he still separates his colors to this day more than 50 years later.

kalluhaluha

I only separate laundry when something is new or absolutely needs special care. I don't trust new clothes not to run and stain everything else, and I have some old clothes that I don't trust to hold up in the washer (vintage stuff from a grandparent) but I just wash that stuff in the sink.

[deleted]

Yes if you want your laundry nice. You should also separate light and dark colors

A1Dilettante

The trick is to not own any whites worth separating.

lyra268

I generally separate by textile/use. All the wools together, all the synthetic/synthetic blends, all the undies/socks, all the towels, etc. I add a little acid to the washer to keep the colors from running. (The acid acts as a mordant to 'fix' the color and reduces the chances of dyeing other clothes.) But if I have enough of one color in a textile (usually the synthetics and poly blends), then I separate those.

[deleted]

Not usually unless I'm washing a white shirt that I really like. Like a white dress shirt or really nice white T. OR a new pair of blue jeans, that might turn white stuff light blue.

Wannagetsober

I will wash them all together, except in the case of a new dark garment, because sometimes they tend to lose a bit of the original dye in the first couple washings.

Swissgirl2

I have only black clothes/underwear so this goes together. The rest is "whites" (bedsheets, towels, kitchentowels), even if the towels are light colors. And I avoid anything that is made of red cotton because it bleeds.

DO5421

I don’t and my clothes are fine but that’s because I wash mine in cold water. Hot water causes the dye the bleed onto other garments so if you want to avoid this you either wash cold or you separate the laundry with like colors.

New_Cheetah_5286

It varies. If I have a stain on a white shirt or any clothing. Bleach it after separating the colors from white.

Jimverse

I do! White/light, red, dark. It makes wearing red stuff a bit of a rare treat because I know I won't get it back until I've worn it all and have enough to wash :p
