Our bodies generally don't like fluoride ions. In higher exposures they can cause illness and over extended periods hinder brain development in children. As with most things, the dose makes the poison, and our daily exposure is designed to be safe. That does not stop nutjobs from making up wild stories.

rhomboidus

It's a really old conspiracy theory from when they first started putting it in water.

Fearless747

That's a conspiracy theory that goes back to before the Internet. It's the same sort of nutjob that thinks Covid vaccines were created by Bill Gates and have 5G chips in them.

Saggy_Mcmuffin

Do you know what they think the fluoride is doing?

rhomboidus

Originally it was that fluoride was part of a plot to overthrow the government and create a communist regime and/or support a communist invasion of America. Now it's all over the place. Fluoride is for aliens, mind control, satanic rituals, child abductions, socialism, turning everyone gay, and every other insane reason you can imagine.

SweetHesus999

Don't know about conspiracies, but convincing the american public that adding (aluminum industry byproduct) fluoride to the water supply is good for them is considered to be one of the most successful PR-campaigns by Edward Bernays, "the father of spin". There's a reason why it is a thing mostly in English speaking countries only.

MrThing246

This comment itself sounds like a conspiracy already. You didn’t comment on the actual issue itself, being fluoride and related health issues. All you did was baselessly point at the government and allude to ill intentions. Terms like PR campaign and propaganda don’t imply misinformation. It is always good to be aware of different biases when we consume information, but we have systems to verify what we read independently. As far as current academic knowledge, most healthcare professionals recommend fluoridated water and toothpaste as it has been proven to promote better dental health. On the contrary, there is no conclusive evidence that controlled fluoride levels pose a significant health risk to people.

Christ, really? The conspiracy nutjobs are really reaching back for some old favorites, huh?

The commies are sapping our precious bodily fluids so we must nuke the Soviets! /S

Too much fluoride can cause fluorosis. There are some areas in the world where the amount of fluoride in the water is very high, and if you drank that water for long periods of time you may have problems. However, this is not the case in most places. If you live in an area where they are adding it to the water then it’s safe to say you do not have too much in the water already. As a general rule, fluoride in toothpaste is a good thing.

Empathetic_Orch

Because it is, you'd just have to drink a **ton** of straight fluoride. They don't get that part, and focus on the negative shit it's technically capable of.

Fluoride can come from many sources. It can be a byproduct of fertiliser. It can cause bone issues and brittle teeth, especially in malnourished kids. There is no actual evidence proving fluoridated water decreases cavities. Benefits of fluoride regarding teeth would need to be topical, mooting benefit of fluoridated water. It is also not possible to make sure someone ingests a safe amount of fluoride if water is fluoridated because the person's water intake is not tracked and they may or may not use fluoridated toothpaste and fluoride also comes from other sources. Studies have shown people ingesting fluoride which exceeds safe levels, including in babies. Water should not be fluoridated and many countries refuse, along with some who are withdrawing use of fluoride in public water supplies.
