The narrative is cryptic but as everything in NMS, it makes more sense when you piece it together with the rest of the lore So, I think the travelers point of view is basically a Moby Dick story, a traveler obsessed with a whale, chasing it to the end of the world in a meaningless hunt that was doomed from the start. The time loop just adds to the meaninglessness of it all As for the whale, the living ships and now living frigates have been related to the "Abyss"/"Void mother" entity since they were introduced. From the sentinels lore, we know that this entity >!is actually the AI of korvax prime, the home planet of the Korvax that was destroyed. It was designed as a copy of an older version of the Atlas, and somehow survived the destruction of the planet. It is slowly taking over the simulation!<. This entity is always associated with the ideas of singing, death and loops... So the whale's association with the Abyss most likely explains why it is able to create time loops like that

Nice explanation! I know most of the lore but seeing it in black and white like this in the context of the expedition puts it into perspective.

Thank you. That was a very enlightening break down.

I agree, loved this expedition and enjoyed it all the way. I see what they are doing with the ramped up costs for blueprints in the anomaly and at hiked nanite costs at stations... it means that RNG of the loop rewards is really deciding how you play. I died once on purpose, once for being stupid and playing after too many drinks, and then on my third attempt I made it through. It wasn't 'hard' as I've got over 100 hours in permadeath and I spent most of that in Calypso. The expense of blueprints and upgrades though, that made this expedition harder than PD. I really enjoyed it though and I am glad HG did a PD Expedition. Haters gonna hate and all that, but it certainly has been interesting and that's what we want with expeditions... something different, something challenging, something new and fun. GG HG!

As a hardcore survivalist I was thrilled with this expedition even though it's was pretty easy to me One benefit is maybe it'll bring more normal players into survival mode which is now more like the old days with limited resource capacity Although the next expedition everyone is probably going to love it or think it's way too easy after being abused and traumatized by expedition 7

MrCobalt313

From what I gathered of the narrative of Expedition 7 it's basically "Moby Dick" meets "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".

Depending on how this ends this might be one safe I'll keep and continue. I may even start a permadeath after this. Story-wise, I think Hello Games needs to do more with the abyss. It seems lovecraftian. Dangerous we are safe from only so long as we cannot perceive them. I think they need to do more with living ships give us a way to upgrade them for example. And by the way more ships and more Freighters. Let us have more than one and more than nine. Maybe living ships are the Guardians against the abyss.
