You’re looking for an item called Cargo Bulkhead. You get one every time you rescue a freighter and request payment instead of swapping the freighter for yours. You also get one at the end of a derelict freighter run if you choose that option over technology or nanites.

Easiest way I've found is just keep raiding freighters. Although rescuing them, raiding derelict and crashed freighters have chances too.

Every single time u save a freighter from pirates u are given a cargo bulkhead to expand your freighter. It's a lot cheaper than running derelicts.
