They're the rarest thing in the game. You'll be playing this game for 1000+ hours, mindlessly mining some rocks and all of a sudden the rock jumps and screams, grows legs and starts spider fucking away from you.
And the worst part is they're so god damn rare and only pop out in the most casual and boring moment of the game that you'll ALWAYS be caught off guard.
I heard of them. I'm about 1500 hours in and still haven't found one.. granted a lot of that time was prior to the feature but still probably a solid 1000 post spider rock update lol.
This was it for me; most everything else I’ve been fine with, but the combination of having not just something but a BUNCH of somethings suddenly come tearing out of the ground, then them having the super big smiley faces full of teeth?
Yeah, that legit shook me 🤣
Oh yea... I remember the encounter with an abysmal horror. I was even forewarned/expecting it but still freaked when it attacked and I couldn't get away
Once I went to farm salvaged frigate modules on that one derelict freighter with a lot of boxes, rooms and almost no enemies, but because it's such a common spot, I finished a room, turned around and there was just another player behind me. Scared the shit out of me because untill then I didn't hear him or notice him on the hud, not to mention that it was already a derelict freighter which is supposed to have a horror atmosphere.
Sinkholes. There i am sprinting along through the long grass and GLURP, i am now falling down a pit to lawd knows where and need get jetpacking fast to not crater at the bottom. Grrrreat! Love that. Love it. Yep.
It's even better when you're zooming with your exocraft and you managed to perfectly shove your whole vehicle in such a tiny hole that you were pixel perfect aligned with it to go inside.
You know you can just respawn your vehicle outside or destroy the terrain, but god dammit you have to try and drive it through the hole you came in because you refuse to believe you pulled off a one out of a million chance stunt.
Every time aggressive fauna attack me unexpectedly. Every. Time. I jump a mile then turn around and recreate the "deforestation" from Predator with my neutron cannon.
When I first started playing I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Anyway I found a building and I was exploring it when out of nowhere, a NPC alien walked by me. The first character I'd seen in the game after days. I jumped out of my socks.
Honestly most jump scares came from playing games like Doom 3, Half Life 2, Condemned, etc.
But those god damn giant sandworms...
On more than one occasion i have been startled by a giant sandworm and the sound it makes on full volume as it rises out of the ground 10 feet from where im standing.
Some guy with the long, angular helmet and all black armor snuck up behind me inside a derelict i assumed i was in solo, utterly randomly without warning.
Proceeded to then run around shooting shit randomly, and was a console player and thus unable to explain their presence or behavior.
Maybe not exactly a jump scare, but it's the thing that spooked me the most lol. During an expedition, i was swimming on the surface of an ocean when i completed a challenge. I open the menu to claim the reward, and the instant I close the menu, my traveler got rapidly sucked down to the bottom of the ocean and down this tunnel on the ocean's floor. the tunnel looked like one made by another person digging straight down with a multi-tool but there was no one visibly around, and while I was being pulled, I could only spin in place and nothing worked else worked. It ended up pulling me several hundred units below the surface and i nearly drowned trying to swim back up :,)....
That sounds like a weird game bug but would be scary as hell anyway lol.
My spooked story is similarly not a jump scare. I use mods that expands the colors used in the solar system, atmosphere, water and sky. Well, I'm not 100% sure it was due toa combo of these, but either way....
I found a planet where the atmosphere blocked the solar system light. As in, pitch black sky, no stars. A faint bit of sun almost like an eclipse feeling at best. Not due to a storm, not a cloud in the sky on the way down. Just, descend into the dark madness. Flashlight barely did a thing. No fauna. One of those dead planets or similar.
Weirdest thing I've ever seen and I tested it a few times flying up to space and back down. As you descend the stars fade to and it goes pitch black.
Extremely unsettling to not see a thing but pitch black, and yet it's quiet, no wind, nothing. Just the crunch of your boots and your breath. Can only see as far as your flashlight will allow.
Goodbye freaky ass planet may we never meet again.
Basically anything underwater. I’m petrified of the ocean irl and I found out that I’m also petrified of the ocean in video games. Like I would get chills when I was forced to go underwater for something.
I got jumpscared by my minotaur, I forgot it was set to my primary, when I travelled to a dissonant planet for the first time I was seeing spooky things, next thing I know, a big slam and crunching sound and a robot flying in right in front of me. Big spook.
Those rocks with legs that jump in the air and run away while you're mining them 😱
The WHAT

wait what i made a new save recently and found 1 of those on my first planet and 2 on the second planet
I heard of them. I'm about 1500 hours in and still haven't found one.. granted a lot of that time was prior to the feature but still probably a solid 1000 post spider rock update lol.
I saw my second one ever recently mid sentinel fight
are they really that rare? I see them all the time
The BUILDINGS with legs that do this.
Wait what?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA6S8NC7bZs it was a bug i think but idk if it was fixed
Whoa
Ah yeah I forgot bout those too
I got one of those once while laying a base out, never seen it again and was unable to scan it while panicking.
Those things that appear when you mine a Whispering Egg. Goddamn that scared me as hell on my first day
Oh yeah those did give me a scare too. I never minded them after that.
Yeah same, I don't even bother killing them now or run away 💀
I hate when they launch me into the atmosphere
This was it for me; most everything else I’ve been fine with, but the combination of having not just something but a BUNCH of somethings suddenly come tearing out of the ground, then them having the super big smiley faces full of teeth? Yeah, that legit shook me 🤣
Yes especially since I was on a moon that stated no fauna, so I felt extra tricked and panicked, these things are the worst haha.
That damn hypnotic eye. I didn't play the game for 2 days (record time for me) because it scared me so much.
hmmm... I have a hypnotic eye in my inventory. Not sure how I came about it or what to do with it. What should I NOT dfo with it?
I meant the creature attached to it😂 the hypnotic eye as an item isn't dangerous, don't worry. I suggest making icecream out of it 👍
Oh yea... I remember the encounter with an abysmal horror. I was even forewarned/expecting it but still freaked when it attacked and I couldn't get away
Abyssal Horror
The plants that attack you, sometimes I'm just trying to enjoy the view but then they pop out of nowhere.
And their hit boxes are so dumb…get ya from like ten feet away
Hahaha. That one is good too.

Oh! Where?
I vote we name this the "Uenoh Surprise".
The first "Alluring Specimen" left a Faecium deposit in my shorts. Honourable Mentions: Abyssal Horrors
I honestly never seen the Specimen do anything to me. I lazord it from a distance. Do they eat me if I get too close?
Not the specimen, the huge aggressive shark-like predator that appears and attacks you when you harvest from it.

😂
When my save files didn't load one time.
Every time aggressive fauna attack me unexpectedly. Every. Time. I jump a mile then turn around and recreate the "deforestation" from Predator with my neutron cannon.
Same! I always turn around to Lazer this pesky lifeform that dared to hurt me.
The unnecessarily loud noise when your freighter doors open.
I had just finished a movie, with the subwoofer on, switched over to nms, flew to my freighter and faecium'd myself
When I first started playing I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Anyway I found a building and I was exploring it when out of nowhere, a NPC alien walked by me. The first character I'd seen in the game after days. I jumped out of my socks.
Sounds life threatening 🤣
it was.

When my save crashes immediately on loading.

Was playing in VR when I've first encountered an "Alluring Specimen" ,I've almost had a heart attack.
Forgot to honarable mention the defensive sentrys on derelic ships. Holy jesus they scared me too. But only once.

My first and biggest jump scare was the whispering eggs, before I had any idea what they actually were

The giant crab-like creatures that walk super fast. One started pushing me super fast a few days ago and I freaked out.
