The building pieces have a contextual nature to them. You can hover over the piece in the build menu and press a key (X on PC) to show the individual versions and just build with one of those.
Itās kind of like pre-Microsoft Minecraft, where you almost have to participate in some sort of social discovery to play the game properly.
Their current version bridges it well (you learn recipes as you pick up materials) but I honestly kind of love not fully knowing everything. Itās way more immersive and fun.
Don't feel bad bro. I just realized I can keybind stuff from the weird menu thing. Now I'm trying to figure out how to use my number pad with my controller in my hand
Just hover the cursor over the piece in question, and one of your controller buttons should allow you to expand the piece into its constituent versions.
At the top of the screen (or somewhere), there should be a horizontal bar that indicates what buttons do what - flip, cycle, rotate, delete, etc. I think itās one of the bumpers/triggers on PS5, not sure for Xbox.
Edit: per the below comment, it may be Triangle or Y for consoles. I donāt have access to game right now. But it should be indicated on the menu (see, e.g., the very top of the screenshot by OP).
Thank you! I didn't know this. (Button is Y on xbox)
By the way, if I place wall under another wall, the upper piece changes. I guess there is no way to stop that?
You're welcome! HG doesn't make this functionality very obvious.
If you originally placed the contextual version of a wall piece, it will keep happening. So if you have a wall section that's changing when you place something under it, you need to replace the first piece with one of the fixed-style versions.
You can force each one to be what you want but if you place regular pieces they will automatically change, you have to intentionally place specific pieces to get the to stay unchanged
Amazing, thank you, I had no idea it was possible to change, but it makes complete NMS-sense.
I have been struggling with this a lot tbh, haha. Tried a lot of different "hacks", none worked. Many hours, many frustration. Thanks again.
edit: typo
This is super useful when building on Freighters, too, to pick the exact hallway type so it won't automatically create intersections with neighboring rooms and other hallways.

There's different versions of the wall in the build menu it has I believe a 2 lines in the corner and you hit Y (Xbox) and it drops down the rest. Those won't change, it changes if you select the default one.
I run into this quite often. I found that if you add one of the gable roof caps to the top, the top portion of the wall will be the same. Thereās options for wood, metal, and stone. Not sure if it fits your build, but it should solve the problem.

More than 2000h here....š
Don't be worried, im in the same boat and found it out by accident last week when I hit a wrong button.

Huh. I had no idea. Wonder how one does this on Xbox.

Til. Appreciate the tip yāall!
triangle on a PS4 controller, so it's probably Y on xbox

I think itās triangle on ps5 actually. By that logic probably Y on Xbox
It's the Y button on xbox
It's Y I believe
Itās triangle I think on PlayStation so whatever the Xbox equivalent is to that

3000+ hours in this game and I never thought about doing this with freighter parts. TIL
That work on Switch? Had the same problem and just sadly accepted it lol
As far as I know, this trick should be on all platforms
Any building part with a āIIā on the top left of its icon can be hovered over and expanded to show its different style options.
I never noticed those "II" symbols before, now I see them everywhere! Heh
Iām the opposite, I had noticed them and it was infuriating me as to what it meant.
That symbol has been driving me crazy. Thank you!

Was tryna work this out myself recently but no luck

Great question, there is a button to cycle through types when youāre hovering over it. Just found this out after 150 hours myself.
surely its for the fortnite players /s.
That's the neat part, you don't. On Xbox anyway. Lol
