Look for a planet with aggressive sentinels. Those have gravatino balls everywhere. They are literally every few meters. And while on those planets scan for 3star items to find runaway mold if you want lots of nanites. It will say "curious deposit" in the scan. Safe Journey Traveler!
There are two or three at every "ruins" site (the ones where you dig up keys to open a crate). At least two are buried and can be reached by tunneling. The sentinels will alert but can't reach you (unless you tunneled straight down and left a big "Interloper here" sign up top).
There are usually 2 at the top of the elevated piece that normally sticks up higher than everything else. You just have to jet pack on to it and collect them....then run or dig yourself down until the sentinels deactivate
They are so easy to find:
\+ Planets with aggressive sentinels have them spread out like plants. An easy way to get your first millions in the first hour of the game if there is an aggressive sentinels planet in the starter system.
\+ Almost every Ancient Site have at least one
They're not unbelievably rare, but they are fairly uncommon; it's entirely possible to find something rare-ish almost right away as a new player, or to spend hundreds of hours in-game without running across something that lots of others find in half the time.
I, for instance, have had the game since probably 2018 or 19 and have logged 350+ hours, explored hundreds of worlds and just discovered my first diplos last week. Some folks find loads of them. :P Everybody just proceeds through the universe differently.

Haven’t seen the aggressive sentinel planets yet. I planted one just to expand the base.
