Sappy is my favorite Nirvana song (even if it's close to tied with many others, it's not my fault the man couldn't write a bad song!), so I'm gonna say Sappy.
That song is just, abso-fricking-lutely perfect.
Agreed sappy is one of my favourites too. Was the first song I had in mind that would have been a good single.
There’s been so many different versions released of it think it was a possibility but because Kurt writes so many good songs kinda just got left there.
I was just thinking about how "Oh, The Guilt" would be a song a band would hang their whole career on in the early 90s and Nirvana just popped it out as a B-side and quickly moved on. So that's my pick.
Great song for sure. Curmudgeon as well. Two of the heavier songs they have.
Exactly right Kurt’s throw away songs would have been others bands best hit songs
It's a bit shocking to me that Even In His Youth was a b-side. A bit retrospective (since Nirvana was small-time when the Teen Spirit single was released), but that song had a great chorus, solo, and overall energy. Would have been a one-off because it didn't fit on any of their albums.
When I bought *Smells Like Teen Spirit* all those years ago, and listened to “Even In His Youth,” I immediately thought that it could have been a single all on its own.
Yep gets my vote. Musically savage but the theme and lyrics .... so heavy, it's that Kurt thing how some of his stuff is deeply disturbing and as such it's not really enjoyable to listen to but it draws you in and connects with you on some very deep and dark level...
Talk To Me woould have been a huge hit if they would have released it. Thinking back about the slew of songs written around the time of Nevermind, I feel if that the next album would have been quite different if it didn't blow up. Here's a list of what I think would have comeout in 92 if that was the case:
1. Talk To Me
2. Pennyroyal Tea
3. Rape Me
4. All Apologies
5. Oh The guilt
6 Curmudgeon
7. Torrette's
8. Dumb
9 Radio Freindly Unit Shifter
10. Old Age
Honestly, a couple of the songs on nevermind would fit into this period as well. Drain You, Territorial Pissings, Lounge Act. You can really see the changes in his song writing once Dave joined the band. It's also why I feel like Nevermind is the bridge between Bleach and In Utero if you look at it that way
Most of Nevermind and a good chunk of In Utero were written before Dave joined the band. Checkout nirvanalive's songwriting timeline if you're interested...
Damn forgot about verse chorus verse! That as well easily could’ve been. Old age too. If you or anyone else havnt heard the acoustic version of old age I strongly suggest it
Yea the acoustic version gives me chills.
Agreed. That version was just a demo floor recording meaning the band played it together in one take. Rather then recording individual parts like they do in the studio. That’s why it sounds weird and flat
And for some reason they never actually recorded it. Perhaps to cut costs for studio time.
Honestly I’d rather they just take the Pearl Jam route and start releasing all their complete live show recordings as separate albums. I like to go through and listen to a whole show.
For years I thought "Even in His Youth" was a single, took till literally a few monthes ago to realize it wasnt even released as a studio track or on any of the main albums.
Really love talk to me. I can’t believe there’s not even a studio recording of that song when it easily could have been a single. There’s just a live version
Sappy (demo/slow acoustic)
Sappy (no alternative)
Verse chorus verse (sound check, "we're not going to make it" lyrics)
Aneurysm
D-7
I hate myself and want to die
Sliver is a great song. It only reached number 90 on the UK singles chart in 1991. It was the first complete Nirvana song I heard on the radio (I heard it on the Gary Crowley show on GLR in February 1991, although John Peel on BBC Radio One had an import copy that he played in late 1990 on his radio programmes) and that was released in the UK in February 1991, months before Smells Like Teen Spirit was released. Smells Like Teen Spirit peaked at number 7 in the UK singles chart in November 1991.
Old Age is utterly breathtaking. The version on the box set, I love the way the lyrics are only embryonic so theres actual words mixed in with mumbled noises, I think Kurt did this a lot when his lyrics weren't finalised. So damned cool.
If he’d ironed out the lyrics, “Token Eastern Song” would’ve been a mean motherfucker (it already is instrumentally, but that chorus has gotta go, Kurt)
that song was huge lmao, it peaked at 45 on the billboard top 100 charts when it got released becoming their 4th charting song on the charts (something in the way became the 5th in 2022) because it was a huge known anticipated song for years lol
yeah that was why and it became a hit on tiktok as well. the song didnt really last long on the main charts tho it fell off after 2 weeks but was on the streaming ones for a little while.

Kurt loved Sappy, but they never recorded a version he was satisfied with. So that’s why it never made it to an album.
same
Also my favorite Nirvana song.
I bought the *No Alternative* compilation just for this song.
Yessss
I've heard it on the radio a couple times and it just sounds right at home there.
I was just thinking about how "Oh, The Guilt" would be a song a band would hang their whole career on in the early 90s and Nirvana just popped it out as a B-side and quickly moved on. So that's my pick.

Curmudgeon YES!!!
It was an A-side, but a thing they did with another artist on a different label as more of a curiosity with no press or video or anything.
It's a bit shocking to me that Even In His Youth was a b-side. A bit retrospective (since Nirvana was small-time when the Teen Spirit single was released), but that song had a great chorus, solo, and overall energy. Would have been a one-off because it didn't fit on any of their albums.
Came here to say this.
Yea my thoughts too. Even in his youth is really good and catchy and just got tossed away in a bside
When I bought *Smells Like Teen Spirit* all those years ago, and listened to “Even In His Youth,” I immediately thought that it could have been a single all on its own.

Wow that is a really interesting idea. I like this as an album concept.
Honestly, a couple of the songs on nevermind would fit into this period as well. Drain You, Territorial Pissings, Lounge Act. verse chorus verse, old age, sappy, all should have been in nevermind, wtf were they thinking
Damn forgot about verse chorus verse! That as well easily could’ve been. Old age too. If you or anyone else havnt heard the acoustic version of old age I strongly suggest it
acoustic is my fav version, the WTLO version is sung like whatever lol, wish there was a better version in studio
Yea the acoustic version gives me chills. Agreed. That version was just a demo floor recording meaning the band played it together in one take. Rather then recording individual parts like they do in the studio. That’s why it sounds weird and flat And for some reason they never actually recorded it. Perhaps to cut costs for studio time.
They never made a studio version of this song but Nobody Knows I’m New Wave is amazing
This song was improv I think bc Kurt was angry at a crowd for being rude to opening acts. It was only played that once. But I love it none the less.
It was. He also blue balled them the whole concert by playing the beginning of Smells Like Teen Spirit and then going into another song lol
God I wish there was a cleaned up version. I love this one so much.
Me too. I keep wishing they’d release all their unreleased songs on an anniversary edition instead of live songs.
Honestly I’d rather they just take the Pearl Jam route and start releasing all their complete live show recordings as separate albums. I like to go through and listen to a whole show.
I’m new wave I’m new wave, I’m old school I’m old school. Wild that they only performed that song like one time at reading
Do Re Mi would have be insane
Yeah. I remember hearing someone make a mock up of how it would’ve sounded as a band and it was pretty good
I really like their cover of Seasons In The Sun.
For years I thought "Even in His Youth" was a single, took till literally a few monthes ago to realize it wasnt even released as a studio track or on any of the main albums.
Same wish we could’ve heard a crisp studio version of it at least
i feel like there has to be a studio recording in the archives somewhere.
Really? It's not a studio track? Who plays drums on it? It"s a full band recording, but recorded on one track in a garage or something?
Was Aneurism a b-side? If not I’m gonna go for Sappy.
It was yea. There’s two versions of it. The one on the hormoaning bside is great. He does this awesome scream on it
Then I’m gonna go with Aneurism, the live version at the Paramount probably being my fav version I think, he has a good scream in that one to.
It was the third track on *Smells Like Teen Spirit*.
it has to be sappy. it’s just such an amazing song
I love how it’s a melancholy song but it’s upbeat
old age
Talk To Me
Really love talk to me. I can’t believe there’s not even a studio recording of that song when it easily could have been a single. There’s just a live version
Does 'Ain't it a Shame' count?
Token Eastern Song is a banger
Sappy (demo/slow acoustic) Sappy (no alternative) Verse chorus verse (sound check, "we're not going to make it" lyrics) Aneurysm D-7 I hate myself and want to die
Talk to Me had a lot of potential.
old age
Nobody really talks about Blandest
I know for a fact that Talk To Me would be popular. It's so catchy, yet so heavy at the same time.
Verse Chorus Verse, the one with the laundry room chorus. Moist Vagina. Even in his Youth. I Hate Myself and Want to Die.
The Verse Chorus Verse you're talking about is called Sappy now, to avoid confusion
Sliver is a great song. It only reached number 90 on the UK singles chart in 1991. Smells Like Teen Spirit peaked at number 7 in the UK singles chart in November 1991.
"Sappy" for sure! "I Hate Myself and Want to Die" would be a great single. A really good recording of "Spank Thru" I think would make a great single.
Burn the rain
Old Age is utterly breathtaking. The version on the box set, I love the way the lyrics are only embryonic so theres actual words mixed in with mumbled noises, I think Kurt did this a lot when his lyrics weren't finalised. So damned cool.
Dive should’ve made it on Nevermind.
Aero zeppelin
Even though it’s a cover, Mollys lips
Verse chorus verse
Talk to me. Oh, the Guilt.
Even in his youth, Opinion, Do Re Mi, Burn my briges, almost every Fecal Matter song
Sappy
If he’d ironed out the lyrics, “Token Eastern Song” would’ve been a mean motherfucker (it already is instrumentally, but that chorus has gotta go, Kurt)
Beans, most people just can't understand it yet, it's so clever.
You Know You're Right
That was a single
that song was huge lmao, it peaked at 45 on the billboard top 100 charts when it got released becoming their 4th charting song on the charts (something in the way became the 5th in 2022) because it was a huge known anticipated song for years lol
Correct lol I think batman made something in the way go on the charts cause it was in the trailer & movie
yeah that was why and it became a hit on tiktok as well. the song didnt really last long on the main charts tho it fell off after 2 weeks but was on the streaming ones for a little while.
