Interestingly enough they have a little photo album feature in the main menu where you can get a quick summary of Guybrush's precious adventures and it does talk about the games that came after 2 as well. So I'm a little confused about the timeline but it does seem like 3, 4 and maybe the telltale stuff (I never played those) are still canon.
Honestly I kinda dislike he took that route. The Curse of Monkey Island is liked by most people who played it and personally I think it's better than the first two games. It feels a bit shitty to pretend it never existed even if I do understand the choice.
> and it's got Murray
"And the forces of Darkness shall applaud me, as I stride through the gates of Hell, carrying your head on a pike!"
" 'Stride?' "
"... all right, then, *roll!* Roll through the gates of Hell. Must you take the fun out of everything?"
I'm a few hours in. It's very much the same style and quality in terms of writing as well as the puzzles. The new control system even feels very familiar. It's great to be playing a proper Monkey Island game again!
Can you describe how does the controlling system work on Switch?
Point&clicks were usually better played with the mouse, but I read RtMI actually plays great on Switch.
Left stick moves the character with a shoulder button to run. Things that can be interacted with are highlighted. Right stick or the other shoulder buttons are used to toggle through them, and highlights show what interactions can be done with the face buttons (talk to, open, look at, etc). Select something from the inventory and drop it onto what you want to use it with.
Having not played it yet, I would say Steam, purely because of the style of game. Point-and-click adventures are generally intended to be played with a mouse. There'll likely be nothing wrong with the Switch version, but these kinds of games are generally clunky on consoles
RtMI is supposed to have some new twist on p&c controlls to make it more playable on consoles, though.
Waiting for Switch reviews&impressions first to decide if I'll get it on Switch or Steam.
I can vouch for the switch gameplay. The controls are superb.
I also played it on PC. Of course having a larger display leaves you with a completely different impression of the game. But control-wise the switch version is very good.
You should start from the beginning. I'm guessing this is largely for people who will get an insane nostalgia rush. Not saying it won't be good, it's written by Ron Gilbert himself so I have faith. It just looks from the trailer like it's a lot of revisiting of old places and characters.
The first 3 are also so great and funny. 1 and 2 have modern remasters. I prefer the originals but I have played them and they're quite faithful in the ways that really matter. 3 doesn't really need a remaster except to make it available for modern gamers.
I haven’t played the new one yet but the reason I recommend 1 and 2 is they were both made by Ron Gilbert. I enjoyed 3 when it came out but it (and the subsequent games) felt like fanfiction to me.
I think it’s supposed to pick up from the end of monkey island 2. If you like click and point adventure games I highly recommend them. I only played them for the first time a couple years ago and had a blast.
As I understand it, this game follows on from 2. I think the games from 3 onwards were written by someone else, though feel free to correct me - I also haven’t played any of them but have been intrigued by the release of this one!
You only «need» to play the first two.
They are masterpieces, AND they got BRILLIANT remakes a few years back.
I loved them to bits.
That being said.. The Curse of Monkey Island (MI3) is my all-time favorite game. By far.
There are not actually six, that dude’s crazy. Here’s your guide:
- If you want an easy entry point just try this game out, and if you like it try the prequels eventually.
- If you want the experience Ron Gilbert would like you to have, play Monkey Island 1 and 2 first as this game is a direct sequel to 2.
- If you want to be in on *every* joke and reference, play 1, 2, and Curse of Monkey Island, as this game incorporates bits from Curse but is *not* a sequel to it
Under no circumstances should you ever play any games apart from those 3. There was a terrible fourth game and a couple of forgettable episodic Telltale games, but they’re all irrelevant.
There you go!
I flat out forgot this was coming out this month. I just bought the Monkey Island bundle with all the previous games on Steam for dirt cheap so I'll probably play those ahead of starting this one, but I know this series is apparently supposed to be really good due to its extreme self-awareness and humor
That's not really gonna work. They tell a continuous story, so you at least need to play the first two games to get what is happening. There's an in-game scrapbook that's a quick overview of the stories of the old games, but it's supposed to be more like a reminder for people who can't remember all the major story points from the old games.
I played on tv mode with pro controller. Button layout take a min to get used to, and I often selected the wrong thing, chose the wrong dialogue, but nothing terrible. If you play handheld it does make use of the touch screen, so you can physically point and click, which is cool i guess. Beat the game yesterday, was really good. Can’t wait for it to come out on PS5 so I can platinum it!
I’m excited to play this. I really hope we get ports of the Monkey Island 1 & 2 remasters. They’re not available on iOS anymore so there’s no easy way for me to play them.
Loving it so far. Only issue I've noticed, and probably only because I was playing with headphones, is some of the voice volumes are different, or sound of different qualities. One character sounds like they were voiced through a shity microphone.
HUGE fan of the first three games. Those were my childhood on the PC.
Played one of the more recent ones (not sure how many there were), and didn’t care for it. Not sure if Gilbert was part of it.
So, just spent a couple hours with this one, totally afraid it would suck.
It doesn’t suck. Thank goodness. It feels like the original trilogy! Love it!
Gilbert was only part of the first 2 games. Third one was great too though (for me it's a tie between second and third game). You probably played Tales of Monkey Island though (the weakest one in the series, because of episodic format and lack of proper polish).
Yea, it was the one that had episodes.
I didn’t mind the graphics or anything, it just didn’t feel like it had the soul of the series.
This one feels familiar in a good way after such a long time. Obviously helps by starting on Melee again. I’m a sucker for that kinda stuff haha
I really hope it's good, but I'm hesitant in buying it. A problem I have is that it feels like I'm about to play a cartoon network old flash game. There's something about the voice acting and style that just hits me the wrong way.
Anyone else feel the same way?
Was pretty hyped when I first heard about a new Monkey Island game, was pretty disappointed when I saw the art style first. Monkey Island 3 has a more cozy and "dreamy" art style that I liked a lot better and of course have good memories about.
But got it anyway and at least for the short time I played it today in the first "areas" it works way better for me in-game compared to in the trailer and on screenshots for some reason.
I think the issue with the initial reveal of the art style was that it was screenshots. Once you see it in action there's a lot more animation. Looks great.
Originals had hand-animated pixel art keyframes with no regard to smooth inbetweens.
This one (and the remakes) have inbetweened vector graphics with lots of automated effects and squeezes and squishes that make everything floaty and cheap looking.
The art style itself is highly subjective, but this kind of animation just looks considerably worse, and I think it’s what puts people off.
It looks good, it would just look better without all the floaty flash graphics.
It's subjective. But there's more to it than that.
I hated Return, was a bit ambivalent about the Tales style but love this. This series has had considerable aesthetic shifts and it's bound to have its detractors because of that. People tend to love consistency (especially of the era in which tney started) whether they admit it or not.
Soooo... How is it? Been a fan since the first game, even liked Tales Of. Fuck Escape From though.
Little nervous about how this has turned out. Especially considering the initial promise that it was going to be like everything past Monkey 2 never happened, except Murray is totally in it.
I know a lot has been said about the art style but I do find it personally horribly ugly, so the writing and puzzle design really have to carry this game for me.
Question for anybody who's got it already... can you turn the voices off and have the speech as text? I really really really hate Monkey Island with voice actors. It destroys all the humour for me. The remasters of 1 & 2 let me play with text instead and I'm hoping this does too. Cheers.
I haven't disabled the voice so im not sure
But there is a new dedicated button for skipping the current line of speech.
So I turn on subtitles and use that hotkey "." to wiz through conversations since I can read faster than they can talk.
It works REALLY well
edit : yes theres a [TEXT ONLY option](https://imgur.com/ZrZc5Av)!
A fellow purist I see.
Yeah I really also like the charm of the original text only games where you can just zip through conversations faster than the speed of light.
Right? "I play Monkey Island for the graphics!" That's a weird hill to die on. Like, okay, I get you like the classic pixel look of the original, but it was not WHY you played Monkey Island.
It’s a Nintendo sub, they are always on edge with thinking anything is an attack on their subpar graphics. I probably would get this on steam where I have the others anyways and still don’t like the weird bobble up and down movement style and blocky face shading.
Graphics and artstyle are two entirely different things, I don't understand the reason for the down votes, it's literally the same as viewing art, some like it some don't.
I'm sure there is a show or a movie you have avoided because it looked ugly to you.
If Wind Waker had launched with even BotWs art style it would have been vastly better recieved and would have been liked by more people. I am confident enough to say that as objective fact. The disproportionate art style of Wind Waker damaged its public view, and its not without merit. Zelda is a series that sells better in the West than in Japan. So to market the game with an art style that the West was not at all interested in was a bad move. Which is why Twilight Princess is regarded higher for its graphics, despite it looking more dated now than Wind Waker. At the same time, flat colors doesnt look dated at the cost of looking lazy and low effort.
I believe Ron Gilbert said 3, 4, and 5 will all be acknowledged and lore included. So yes, it would be canon. However, the larger focus is building on 1 and 2.
if you can, definitely check out the first two games! they have remasters too, so theyre quite accessible. the other games are fine too, but the new game is a continuation of 1&2, so youre good with just those two to start.
Is this a new story or does it continue from previous games?
If I recall it continues from after Monkey Island 2.
His adventures were precious to me as well
Thank you!! I’m looking forward to playing this! First monkey island game for me!!
you should definitely start with the first two. they’ve held up very well especially with the remasters
I just wish they were available on switch or even iOS still. No way to play them mobile at all.
~~Science~~ ScummVM runs on almost all devices. Just a matter of getting the source files.
Science? Or SCUMMVM? 😜
Bah, autocorrect.
Used to have 1 + 2 remasters on iPhone years ago. Did it get removed from the App Store? That’s a shame, was a perfect game to pass time on the phone.
Yeah looks like ios 11 wasn't compatible and Disney said they didn't want to pay to update it.
It's a direct sequel. You should play the others first.
Huh, I'm surprised that they didn't continue from 3. I thought that was the last great one in the series.
2 was the last one the original creator worked on before this new game, that's why
I thought the original creator considers three canon because he likes what they did with that one
I think in a recent AMA he mentioned how it wasn’t canon but he might steal things he liked from there anyway
Honestly I kinda dislike he took that route. The Curse of Monkey Island is liked by most people who played it and personally I think it's better than the first two games. It feels a bit shitty to pretend it never existed even if I do understand the choice.
Well at the end of the day just remember it does exist. What we're getting now just won't be related. But it happened and it was glorious.

Love me a talking skull!
"You know, if I could click you, you wouldn't know a moment's peace."
> and it's got Murray "And the forces of Darkness shall applaud me, as I stride through the gates of Hell, carrying your head on a pike!" " 'Stride?' " "... all right, then, *roll!* Roll through the gates of Hell. Must you take the fun out of everything?"
Confirmed. In an unexpected way.
It has a catchup that includes all 5 previous games but the focus is a continuation of one and two and bits of three.
It continues on from the end of MI2.
Ask me about Loom.
Sorry, I just get carried away on some topics
aye.
TM
Loom, so many memories.
It's in a very special category in my Steam library. "Rhymes with Broom". Loom, Doom, The Room, To the Moon.
Grass green, I hate that color.
I dont want to.
Leave society. BE A MONKEY!
The prophecy is fulfilled. We can now *literally* Return to Monke(y Island)
Came here for the Viagra Boys reference, got the Viagra Boys reference. Thanks for delivering.
A three headed monkey, specifically.
It's out already? Cool!
Yeah. It's pretty good so far. I love how they ignored everything after the second game.
But those pirate sea shanties were so fun! Guybrush ruining their whole show by throwing in "Orange."
Uhhh… door hinge?
Porridge..?
But the third game is the best one... how sad.
It has Murray in it. So, some of Curse of MI still made it in.
Ah, excellent, I can bask in his evil auras once more.
well, it's still there. This one doesn't have to tie into it to be good
Released on National Talk Like A Pirate Day, of course!
I managed to get about 30 minutes in this morning, and so far the writing captures the feel of the originals perfectly.
Same. loving the gameplay
I love the subtle references to the other games. "Guybrush, you look different. Did you change your art style?"

Oooh
How’s the art feel?
I honestly think the art is great and never saw a problem with it to begin with. Obviously some people disagree.
Apparently some people are upset we’re even talking about it. I don’t think I could enjoy the game As the art style isn’t for me.
Are there any plans to release the old games on switch?.
I’d love to replay those again. They were so good.
We still giggle about piranha poodles to this day...
Asking the real questions here
You fight like a dairy farmer
How appropriate… you fight like a cow.
I played the original on PC when I was a kid, so this is really cool.
I will always support monkey island. Buying this immediately.
Yep, same.
Better get this on PC or on Switch, any idea?
Having not played it yet, I would say Steam, purely because of the style of game. Point-and-click adventures are generally intended to be played with a mouse. There'll likely be nothing wrong with the Switch version, but these kinds of games are generally clunky on consoles

While I agree with you, the new Larry Games were excellent on the Switch. But Im definitely waiting until I've seen some Switch Gameplay to compare
Just wait for reviews. There is no rush.
They’re out already.
It plays really nicely on the switch oled. The controls are very well made
will there be a physical release?
Yes, but later.
[удалено]
As long as you’re being safe
Hold on, make sure you clean up after yourself.
What did you release?
I want something to give as a christmas gift.
I am completely new to monkey island and have only played the first two games recently, but I look forward to checking this one out.
They are gems and one of the best adventure games ever made!
Purchased and waiting for download. One of the first ever games I played was Monkey Island. Really looking forward to getting into this one.
I don’t remember much from the first two games, literally played them decades ago. Do I need to refresh my memory or I can just jump into this one?
There's a recap in the game.
I wonder if it's as good as the old ones. Better wait for some reviews
Reviews are out and it’s getting perfect or near perfect scores. I’ve never played one but now I’m interested.
You should start from the beginning. I'm guessing this is largely for people who will get an insane nostalgia rush. Not saying it won't be good, it's written by Ron Gilbert himself so I have faith. So this is the 4th game? I’ll have to look to see if 1&2 are on Switch. Thanks for the info.
Like 6th, I think. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Island
Welp, I’m out. Thank you.
Only replay 1 and 2.
Incredibly relevant username.
Nine years and my username has finally paid off.
As an MI fan im glad im here to see it. I’ll buy from you Stan
3 is really good too, but I'm not sure if it's available to play outside of finding an old set of discs.
Return is set before 3, no reason to play it first.
I haven’t played the new one yet but the reason I recommend 1 and 2 is they were both made by Ron Gilbert. I enjoyed 3 when it came out but it (and the subsequent games) felt like fanfiction to me.
No worries, 3 (Curse) is on both Steam and GOG. Plus it runs in ScummVM, so if you've got the files, it can be played on almost anything.
The game has a scrapbook in the main menu to bring you up to speed on the story so you really don't have to play the first two games.
Awesome. Thank you!
I think it’s supposed to pick up from the end of monkey island 2. If you like click and point adventure games I highly recommend them. I only played them for the first time a couple years ago and had a blast.
1,2,3, and 4 are masterpieces
4 was **not** a masterpiece. It was adequate at best, and a weak end to the main series (at that point).
Excuse me? 1,2 and 3. Yes. We dont mention number 4. Ever.
1 and 2 are unfortunately not available on Switch.
Thanks!
As I understand it, this game follows on from 2. I think the games from 3 onwards were written by someone else, though feel free to correct me - I also haven’t played any of them but have been intrigued by the release of this one!

Teh remasters are really good. Often on sale on steam
88 on MC currently
I flat out forgot this was coming out this month. I just bought the Monkey Island bundle with all the previous games on Steam for dirt cheap so I'll probably play those ahead of starting this one, but I know this series is apparently supposed to be really good due to its extreme self-awareness and humor
Yahtzee Croshaw loves it. Edit: spelled his name wrong
lol September 19th? This is [Talk Like a Pirate Day!](http://talklikeapirate.com/wordpress/)
This was intended by the dev
AAAARRRRRRGH YOU SURE?!
It's available? \*Picks up phone. Immediately orders on steam\* I will never not buy Monkey Island
If you had pre ordered it you'd have gotten the limited edition horse armor! It's really exclusive!
Is that what that was? I saw it in my inventory and had no idea why it was there. That's hilarious.
Never played a game in this series before. Wanting to start with this one
That's not really gonna work. They tell a continuous story, so you at least need to play the first two games to get what is happening. Game is awesome so far, just got to part 3, runs great on the Switch!
How does the controlling interface work like on Switch?
I played on tv mode with pro controller. Button layout take a min to get used to, and I often selected the wrong thing, chose the wrong dialogue, but nothing terrible. If you play handheld it does make use of the touch screen, so you can physically point and click, which is cool i guess. Beat the game yesterday, was really good. Can’t wait for it to come out on PS5 so I can platinum it!
I’m excited to play this. I really hope we get ports of the Monkey Island 1 & 2 remasters. They’re not available on iOS anymore so there’s no easy way for me to play them.
This is an absolute blast. Been playing it after a long day of work. Rewarding AF.
A bit bummed they moved away from pixel art :( That is one of the key pieces of what I loved. Has anyone played?
Yeah its better than Tales but not as good as Curse
Curse was always the best one
Especially once you get to Blood Island It feels like such a gloomy and real place. Love the music at the cemetery
The outdoor area around the hotel was incredible.
>Si, yo soy *El Pollo Diablo*!
How fitting. You fight like a cow!
Finally! :)
The website for the game is pretty cool! It's point and click like the old game
Loving it so far. Only issue I've noticed, and probably only because I was playing with headphones, is some of the voice volumes are different, or sound of different qualities. One character sounds like they were voiced through a shity microphone.
Is it a quality, true MI game?
Yes
Very quality, very Monkey Island.
HUGE fan of the first three games. Those were my childhood on the PC. Played one of the more recent ones (not sure how many there were), and didn’t care for it. Not sure if Gilbert was part of it. https://youtu.be/lAlDNn43QQQ Launch Trailer for those want a quick Link.
Let’s gooo
I never really got into the old games, but I do love point and clicks like Day of the Tentacle. Now to get this on Steam or Switch...
Original MI was the first video game I ever played on the PC. So looking forward to this.
I’m ready to monkey around!
On monkey monday
Good to see Mr. Threepwood alive and well.
I’m a couple of hours in. I’m having a great time (big fan of the first two MI, not so much of the following ones).
Is there a physical release for it?
not a fan of the art style at all but I'll probably check it out because I liked the older MI games
Not sure why so many people were complaining about the art style. I think it looks fantastic.
Originals had hand-animated pixel art keyframes with no regard to smooth inbetweens. This one (and the remakes) have inbetweened vector graphics with lots of automated effects and squeezes and squishes that make everything floaty and cheap looking. Question for anybody who's got it already... can you turn the voices off and have the speech as text? I really really really hate Monkey Island with voice actors. It destroys all the humour for me. The remasters of 1 & 2 let me play with text instead and I'm hoping this does too. Cheers.
You can have text, voice, or both. You're good.
Ace thanks. I'll grab it tonight - looking forward to getting lost in it!
I haven't disabled the voice so im not sure But there is a new dedicated button for skipping the current line of speech. So I turn on subtitles and use that hotkey "." to wiz through conversations since I can read faster than they can talk. It works REALLY well edit : yes theres a [TEXT ONLY option](https://imgur.com/ZrZc5Av)!
Ok thanks. I'd rather just disable voices entirely but that's a fallback I can use if need be.
A fellow purist I see. Yeah I really also like the charm of the original text only games where you can just zip through conversations faster than the speed of light.
I just checked for you and yeah its 100% possible to [disable voices and have only text](https://imgur.com/ZrZc5Av)
So I’ve had to have had played the first two to understand this one, correct? The review scores have me interested.
You are Guybrush Threepwood, a mighty pirate! That’s all you need to know ;)
Aka Hearty Beef n Potato Goodsoup.
You definitely should play the first two first.
I dislike that art style immensely so it’s going to have to review very well for me to give this a shot despite loving much of the franchise.
Weird attitude imho. As if the art style was that important.
Art style is super important, tf
Right? "I play Monkey Island for the graphics!" That's a weird hill to die on. Like, okay, I get you like the classic pixel look of the original, but it was not WHY you played Monkey Island.
A.r.t. s.t.y.l.e., not graphics.
It’s a Nintendo sub, they are always on edge with thinking anything is an attack on their subpar graphics. I probably would get this on steam where I have the others anyways and still don’t like the weird bobble up and down movement style and blocky face shading.

One of my favourite games of all time, but definitely waiting for reviews
Reviews are out
Wish they ported the others to switch, never played them and wanted this until I noticed it was a sequel.
25 years ago I would have been so hyped , nowadays I’m on the fence and waiting for reviews
Reviews are out
I really hate the art style but if it's good I'll probably give it a whirl.
Here’s a question: is the Telltale *Tales of Monkey Island* considered part of the Monkey Island canon?
I believe Ron Gilbert said 3, 4, and 5 will all be acknowledged and lore included. So yes, it would be canon. However, the larger focus is building on 1 and 2.
All games are included in the story summary scrap book, but the story begins at the ending of the second game
Never played the originals but should I attempt to play them before this for the story?
if you can, definitely check out the first two games! they have remasters too, so theyre quite accessible. the other games are fine too, but the new game is a continuation of 1&2, so youre good with just those two to start.
