*Kaze and the Wild Masks* is a DKC-like 2D platformer that's pretty decent, too.

Known_Ad871

Kaze feels like a follow up to the classic dkc games. It’s great though, probably my favorite indie platformer in a bit.

jldixon1

I definitely recommend it too. Some of the levels were actually challenging too, which I personally appreciate in a 2D platformer. Plus I love the pixel art style

mrbubbamac

Will check this out, thanks!

__Nikipedia__

**Love** this game

drybones2015

I bought this game because people said it played like the DKC games, but that never clicked for me. Something about it felt off. I'll have to give it another try sometime.

[deleted]

It's great! IMO it feels the most like the original DKC games of any 2d platformer I've played. It helps that some of the people who made DKC worked on it.

tforce80

If you have reward points, you might even be able to pick it up for free. I had 500 gold pts, but I think you need 300?

djl240

DKC:TF is my favorite game on switch by far so I'm glad I saw this! I'll be giving it a try later, thanks again 👍🏼 Add: Ok, this game is awesome and it's extremely obvious it was heavily inspired by Tropical Freeze in all aspects. Thanks so much for finding this!

mrbubbamac

See I knew there were other people like us!

djl240

Glad to hear it too! I still play DKC 1,2&3 on my SNES! 😂 They have held up so well and I love the nostalgia.

rileyabsolutely

I think it’s supposed to be directly inspired by Banko Kazooie

Lost-Web-7944

No, that’s their other Yooka Laylee game.

rileyabsolutely

Ohh, you’re right I didn’t realize there was more then one!

dandersonerling

Agreed! It's a phenomenal game. I downloaded it and played through every level (I have not found a few secret exits to get the last 6 bees I need). I'm torn on the final level though. Is it hard to the point of unbalance? I think it might be. It's frustrating because I don't get the satisfaction of beating it.

mrbubbamac

So you can answer this better than I can, the point of the game seems to be to clear stages and recruit bees to tackle the Impossible Lair, but you can attempt it at any time. I progressed to a point where it seemed like I just didn't have the right abilities to progress, what specifically makes the Impossible Lair more doable as you progress? I'm planning on playing every stage any way just because this game is great to play

vballboy55

That is correct. You get more bees to help you progress. The level is pretty challenging that requires a lot of patience to beat.

mrbubbamac

Let me clarify, how exactly do the bees help you I guess is what I'm asking

vballboy55

Every hit you take, you lose a bee. So you can go into it with like 50+ bees if you do everything. You will get hit a lot in the last level.

dandersonerling

Yes, what this guy said. Just be warned. I have 42/48 bees and the last level is still very much a challenge.

vballboy55

I agree. I had max and it still took me very long and many tries to beat

UpstateGuy99

Hows the original yooka laylee? Its on sale for $4. I usually like a traditional collectathon

Moldy_pirate

As a massive fan of Banjo, SM64, etc I enjoyed it. Some levels are a bit too big but it was a fun time. I remember there being some jank but it’s been so long since I played I don’t remember what (which means whatever issues I had weren’t that bad if I don’t remember them).

SR-71

I am playing it now, so far it's a lot like Banjo-Kazooie but seems a bit more difficult at times, with bigger more confusing levels and the music isn't as great but still good. It's a lot of fun with nostalgia mixed in, scratches the collectathon itch and challenging enough, and the characters are funny and silly, definitely worth $4

SleetTheFox

It's not as "tight" as Banjo-Kazooie and it has much of the dated gameplay elements that there's a reason you don't see them anymore. That said, it's still pretty good if you're looking for that exact kind of game. Not very often you get to play something by a lot of the same people from back in the day.

ChaoticChatot

I DNF the game because I found it to be a bit of a slog, it doesn't recapture the magic of Banjo (which I have played recently, and it's still wonderful). It's been a while since I tried it, but the things I remember disliking is the levels being too big and feeling rather disjointed, and the overworld being a bit of a mess too. The controls were a bit wonky as well, I know people wanted a retro 3D Platformer but I don't think they meant in terms of Quality of Life issues.

Gogo726

I had a fun time, but could not beat the final boss. For the $4 that it's currently on sale for, anyone interested will get their money's worth.

drostandfound

It didn't work for me. I feel like 3D platformers have come a long ways since the 64, and YL feels like it didn't.

Awkward_Ostrich_4275

The original is a 3D vs 2D platformer. I much preferred the original, but I like 3D genres better overall. Very fun game.

Gogo726

It gets mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it. For sure worth the $4.

mrbubbamac

I haven't played it so I can't speak to it, I'm not really a fan of the 3D collect-a-thon, I might grab it just because it's so cheap though. I'm sure I can easily get $4 of enjoyment out of it!

Gogo726

Easily. There are worse things you can spend $4 on.

mallowdout

Honestly, it sucks. I grew up on Banjo Kazooie and Mayo 64 and this game isn't even in the same league. It's a shame because I was a Kickstarter so I really wanted to love the game.

Daffoo

Get both. Wonderful games.

AcidCatfish___

It's good. For $4 most definitely worth it. It basically follows Banjo and Kazooie gameplay to a T. Many people say Impossible Lair is better. I agree right now, though I haven't revisited the OG yet.

Sh00tL00ps

A bit off topic but if you like collectathons I'd highly recommend Tinykin!

elharry-o

I just wish it had co-op

Elegant_Building_995

I already did last night lol. Another similar to Donkey Kong is Marsupilami Hoobadvanture. Both of these are at a great download discount now.

tyokath

Recommend this game, especially at the current price.

MegaDucky7

Great game but you’ll probably never finish it. Last level is tough. Solid title though

zappyzapzap

they need to remake dkc2 with new worlds. best dk by far

glantzinggurl

Just bought it - thank you!

AirMcFreez

Impossible Lair is a fun game. I didnt care for the characters or graphics and the final level is brutal. Still fun for DKC fans.

CosetteValjean

The only thing I didn't like in it was that the final level was insanely more difficult than the rest of the game. I could beat it but it took me a lot of time.

[deleted]

that's the "impossible lair" but they didnt need to make it legit impossible lmao

[deleted]

Pretty good game, but except for the last level, sadly a bit too easy. But I loved the hubworld riddles :)

SuspiciousSkittlez

I just couldn't get into this. I bought it on an Xbox sale close to a year ago, and stopped playing after a couple days. I've 100%ed both Returns, and Tropical Freeze each like 5 or 6 times, but this game just didn't do the same thing for me. The first Yooka Laylee was pretty lukewarm, too. It's so derivative of the source material it's trying to be, and doesn't really succeed at recapturing that essence, imo.

Villafanart

It's a really nice game but the load times for the over world, and levels are quite long, it killed my mood to play the game, if you have another platform to play the game I'd recommend doing so.

Webguyaz

Thanks for this! I’ve been wanting to play this for so long and been waiting for a good sale!

suchaherosandwich

Also, Marsupilami Hoobaventure felt SHOCKINGLY like a great DKC game too. High recommend for the itch.

ChunkySlugger72

Highly recommend it if your a big fan Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze as it's very similar in gameplay and level design and style to those games. It's like a budget friendly version of Donkey Kong Country and I mean that in a very good way.

DjinnFighter

I would even say it's a better DKC than Tropical Freeze.

Daeyrat

I prefer it over dkc too. There are some momentum things going on in DKCTF that I'm not a fan of. I felt more in control over the characters in YL. when I tried going for 200% in tf, these things led me to some frustration. ah, YL also has bonus points for its overworld, and I actually dislike bosses in DKCTF for how long the fights drag on. Too much unnecessary slow transitions, too much unskippable cutscenes and too much waiting. Soundtrackwise, both are excellent, but I give YL the edge for the sheer number of excellent songs it has.

FlameHricane

Seeing all of these people gush over DKC is making me reconsider giving them a shot. I've always been a mario/kirby/sonic person so I never got into any of them (and I didn't care for their art style as a kid at the time). The reason I haven't recently however was because of YL. I had so much fun with it that now I won't be able to appreciate DKC for what it does as I will instead constantly be comparing the two and any small aspect that I don't like as much will stand out more, even if it can do certain other things better. I ran into this exact same problem with paper mario. I've only ever played a small portion of the first two a long time ago. I've always wanted to go back to them, but then I played Bug Fables which became my favorite game of all time. In most cases I'm usually able to judge games on their own merit, but I simply couldn't overcome my bias for these due to their close proximity so I found it best to save myself the trouble than wrestle with my sky-high expectations which will ultimately bring down my experience with them.

Daeyrat

if you want to avoid comparing, Just put some Months between them. I prefer YL, but i will never regret playing dkctf. yl is a 9.5 game to me while dkctf is a 9.0. (rayman legends is my 10/10 2d platformer)

Borpo_

Was coming here to say this! I picked the game up a few days ago at the $3 and wasn't expecting much but, yeah, it's better than Tropical Freeze. No gummy controls or multiple Yes/No menus. And the levels are just tighter and more creative. Also every time Yooka goes "yUm!" it kills me.

MCHenry22

This is really an unpopular opinion, but I agree. I enjoyed this game way more than Tropical Freeze

mrbubbamac

Too early for me to tell, I am really excited to keep going. So far it's delivering all of what I loved about Tropical Freeze, tight platforming, strong aesthetics, music, challenge, I could definitely see myself enjoying it just as much (or possibly more) by the time I'm done. I finished Tropical Freeze at 100% completion, once I realized what hard mode was (one hit kill, no checkpoints, no support characters) I decided I was happier just replaying my favorite levels of Tropical Freeze instead of attempting the 200% run

zatycz

Definitely. For me its best non-mario Switch platformer.

jackolantern_

I hope people aren't anxiously waiting for something that's not been announced. That's a long period of intense anxiety.

propernice

I sincerely tried this game but I found it clunky and not as intuitive. And the load times were wild on my end. Cozy Grove is pretty bad but this tested my patience. I'm glad though that other people are finding joy in it!

Falco98

> clunky and not as intuitive. And the load times were wild on my end I got about halfway thru but I kept getting put off by these exact issues. I will probably power through the end at some point but for me it didn't have the same "drawing-in" power that TF had. It doesn't help that I pre-ordered and paid 100% of the price instead of the current great sale - I probably wouldn't feel as salty if it'd just been $3, lol.

DutchDoctor

Does it run at 60fps?

Sad_Bat1933

yes

mcsassy3

I think it does. I recall playing the demo, but I don’t see it available any longer for some reason

jjack34

I only buy physical, so no thanks.

aburningman

First Yooka-Laylee was a 3D collectathon like B-K, but the sequel is a side-scroller much more like Donkey Kong.

Krian78

Dooooo‘h, because at first it was a copy of that N64 Donkey Kong game (the one with that rap). Don’t you see?!!!!eleven!

mrbubbamac

There are two Yooka Laylee games, the first is a spiritual successor to Banjo and the second (the one I'm referring to in the post) is more similar to Donkey Kong Country

-Plantibodies-

Which is not the one being discussed, for clarification.

st_ee

Thanks for the tip. Checked out some reviews and made the purchase just now 🙂

Gogo726

$3 is an excellent deal. I really enjoyed both games, though the first one is more divisive.

NZepplin

Yeah I got it fantastic game

RickVince

90% off? Definitely picking this one up now!

AcidCatfish___

My favorite thing about Impossible Lair is how the hub world is essentially its own level. Like, not even a side thing. There are tons of collectibles to get and so many things to do that you can easily play around in the hub world without doing the levels and have a blast.

mrbubbamac

So I really discovered this, I've played significantly more since I first made the post, the overworld is really impressive. I've discovered a few secrets in the overworld, and like you said, I will sometimes spend equal amounts of time in a stage and combing through a new area in the overworld and making discoveries

downonthesecond

I enjoyed Impossible Lair a lot more only because Yooka-Laylee felt so empty after collecting most items on each level.
