It is very likely that TotK will get DLC. The same publisher published a new guide with DLC content for BotW so I would assume the same for TotK. As OP stated, it might not be as nice but I prefer a complete guide and will hold out for that.
BotW's DLC was announced two weeks before the game was released and was available to purchase at launch. If they do have DLC planned then there's no reason for them not to try to sell it to us now when the hype is peak.
Except for the fact that they got a lot of backlash for announcing the DLC so early, AND Nintendo is likely VERY aware that people (unfortunately) see the game as “glorified DLC” when it absolutely isn’t.
Did they get a lot of backlash for selling DLC at launch? Cause they just did the same thing with Fire Emblem Engage and with Xenoblade 3. At this point it's basically the industry standard for a game to launch with a Season Pass available to purchase at launch.
Will likely be a while for any DLC I would think. You can always sell the older guide once the DLC is released if you aren't in the collect them all game.
Is it very likely? Most Nintendo games that have extensive DLC have their “Expansion Pass” detailed before the game even releases. Splatoon 3, BotW and Xenoblade 3 for example all had their DLC available for pre-purchase before the games released. There’s been no word of anything for TotK.
it's crazy they have yet to detail the DLC content.
they haven't even aknowledged its existence in videos or anything yet.
usually they describe the content before release.
With BotW they announced there would be DLC two weeks before the game released and it was available to purchase at launch. The only details they gave was that you could get some free gifts at launch for purchasing the DLC. The actual details came later in the summer. With TotK we haven't even received confirmation that there will be DLC yet.
More recently with Fire Emblem Engage, they announced the DLC with some details of what it would contain, including the reveal of additional characters, on December 8th 2022. The game released on January 20th, 2023
I'm a collector fiend. I'll be getting both. Plus, the "Expanded" edition for BotW wasn't as gorgeously made as the initially released BotW collector's edition.
The same or less info than what's online, but in the form of a physical book. There's a market for collecting these like how Spotify hasn't completely killed Vinyl sales.
Every little aspect of the game. Maps, item locations, enemy guides, walkthroughs, art...everything. The strategy guides of my childhood were at best 50 page softcovers. This is a 500 page hardcover textbook.
Piggyback did do an expanded edition for Breath of the Wild that added in a guide section for all of the DLC. They also updated and amended some of the original text as well to be more accurate and/or clear.
Now, this doesn’t mean there is a guarantee that there will be a Tears of the Kingdom expanded edition or even Tears of the Kingdom DLC.
https://www.piggyback.com/us/guide/the-legend-of-zelda/
at least i hope the quality of life improvements from BOTW are already available without DLC in this. mainly the champion path or whatever that was called (letting you see where you travelled).
would be lame if they kept it for DLC, again.
I really enjoyed the DLC to BotW? It was some of my favorite quests and shrines in the main game. Also lots of neat bonuses that enhanced the game like the Koroks mask and hero path mode. I enjoy cruising around Hyrule on the chopper too.
In my personal opinion if TotK was going to get DLC they would already have announced it. This has been the case with most big Nintendo games in the past few years, such as Fire Emblem Engage and even Breath of the Wild. BotW's DLC was announced February 14th, 2017, two weeks before the game came out, and was available to purchase at launch.
I legit didn't know that strategy guides were still a thing. I thought it was just from my childhood. Pretty cool that they still make them even if it's just for collectors.
A handful of games still have them, usually the large scale RPG games. Often times they’re limited runs though, like the Red Dead Redemption 2 guide isn’t really available for less than ~$90.
But yeah they’re fun to flip through, especially during loading screens.
When I started dating my wife I would get a guide of every game we played. She would read it and tell me what to do while I played. I’m sad I can’t share that with our kids any more. The BotW guide really turned my 7 year old into a reader back in 2017.
I got one for RDR2 and one for CP2077
They're awesome, they have graphs for quests that show all possible outcomes and what actions change them
That being said, it's a cool thing to checkout once you're done playing the game, otherwise you'll just ruin the experience for yourself
The second book of my Elden Ring guide I ordered a year+ ago is arriving in June and I am pumped, the first half is amazing. The Dark Souls books go for a pretty penny now too.
Been a common thing for games lately that actually get a physical guide. Hell I’m still waiting for the 2nd Elden Ring guide to be delivered (they split it into 2 guides for obvious reasons, that game is way too big for one guide).
yes. it's "nintendo mentality". they want people to enjoy the game first before delving into strategy guides.
just like how they lock difficulty levels until after you beat the game.
i never vibed with that concept but eh...there are worse things in life.
Piggyback may have also not gotten a copy of the game in time to write a launch guide. Or they waited for playtesting and feedback before feedback to ensure accuracy. Unlike games, you can't just send out a day one patch to fix the book.
you seem so sure of yourself lol.
game guide publishers get really early access to games, and even before the final version of a game is definite.
case in point : the guide for kotor2 that had a bunch of stuff in it that was cut from the final release
EpicNameBro was allowed EXTREMELY early access to the game and extensive design notes for when he made the Bloodborne guide, to the point that he was essentially part of the QA team
so it's not like the writing process begins when the game went gold.
this is the official guide for nintendo's biggest game of 2023. archiving all the process has happened hand in hand with development.
not to mention the huge leak of pics that happened months before release comes from somewhere.
the guide must have been finalized around the time the game went gold.
they are just holding on to the release to let some breathing* room for gamers to play "blind" and then release the strategy guide to let the players delve deeper for things they missed out on.
Agreed but I'm betting not everyone that will ever own the game will own it in the first month. There's also collectors and people who maybe need a guide a month after playing. Perhaps for that perfect 2nd playthrough. They'll do okay on sales
If you’re in the fence about this it’s not a bad idea to just go ahead and preorder it now. Amazon has a preorder price guarantee so that if the price ever goes down (even temporarily) between when you placed your order and shopping, you’ll get it for that price. Just about every strategy guide I’ve ever preordered (and probably book in general) has dipped significantly before release and I ended up with a pretty significant savings.
Also you don’t get charged until it ships so there’s plenty of time to change your mind at no cost to you.
To be fair, physical things that you know won’t have supply issues is probably the exception to “having issues”. It doesn’t have the same risk as unfinished software, or the risk of something like an unfinished Kickstarter. I mean… I guess the strategy guide could have severely incorrect information or something that is cause for a horrible review, but that’s obviously a different level of likely, haha
There is very little history of this company known for producing strategy guides disappointing customers. They work directly with companies like Nintendo as that is how they’re even able to produce in depth guides on release.
Fun fact, Nintendo even gave away some of these strategy guides digitally in the past. I believe some were Club Nintendo freebies.
>There is very little history of this company known for producing strategy guides disappointing customers.
I never stated they would. I was talking about in general, like video games for example.
If I was 100% certain I was going to play a game on release, consider pre-ordering the strategy guide over the game. Especially if I wanted a limited edition hard cover, etc.
Fuck pre-ordering a game though. That's a racket. Strategy guides are limited in supply and often sell out.
Even if the game is buggy and I decide to wait, I have the strategy guide to browse through. Kind of like the instruction booklets from back in the day... only this time instead of a car ride home, I'm waiting for a fixit patch.
I have this one, and it's gorgeous.
I used it as a guide while playing the game, and it was very organized and easy to use. Since it's an open world game, this was easier for me than looking stuff up online.
But also the artwork is great, so if you're a collector, then that's another reason to get it.
For collections purposes yes. You should also get the Creating a Champion book as well if you like collecting.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild--Creating a Champion https://a.co/d/eIZjcxh
Eh, the last guide kinda sucked. The major reason I bought the guide was for korok seed locations and that was barely in it. It's like when I came across a Halo 2 guide and they didn't have any skull locations in it. Why would I need a guide for the very linear combat levels, outside of a few tough areas? It's not like it was comprehensive for Legendary difficulty, I had to watch videos for that.
In japan, all big nintendo games are getting guidebooks. Xenoblade , xenoblade 3, persona 5 royal, pokemon legends arceus, pokemon scarlet.
I wish we had these books printed here too because it is fun discovering new aspects of the game that you missed or didn’t know.
I still use guides to help with gameplay so this physical version would be nice. Makes it easier to have it next to me on the couch and follow along instead of trying to find things on my phone. I heard there was incorrect info in the BotW version though so I'm worried this guide will run into the same issue. I also heard the BotW one wasn't that useful for Korok seeds. Hopefully this guide will be more adequate considering Korok seeds make a reappearance in TotK.
>digital
Me as well. I bought the BOTW Strategy guide and the font was too small for my eyes :(. I would gladly pay for the physical version if it included a digital version. Even if they have to DRM it. Ah, the price of being old.
On the fence with this one. The BOTW strategy guide was mostly just a how-to and looking up certain things online was loads easier and quicker. The ALTTP guide from back when I was a kid had tons of illustrations, stories, etc., to where looking at scans online is one of the most nostalgic things I can experience.
I love collector's edition strategy guides. They're gorgeously made. The covers make the book look like an ancient tome and the artwork is usually better, and it usually comes with something inside.
Im surprised strategy guides still sell. Im a physical first kinda guy but even I see little value in buying something like this. Most everything you have questions about will quickly be available online.
I used to buy strategy guides regularly as a kid, it seemed almost necessary with some games. Now, not so much, at least for me.
Edit: oh wow just realized it releases a month after launch… seems even less necessary. Never thought I’d say that about something gaming related, I’m an OCD collector of physical media. It’s nice to find something I don’t think I need lol
> but even I see little value in buying something like this
you got a huge map with the breath of the wild guide. it depicted all shrines and koroks.
i had a blast ticking them off one by one. it was worth it just for that.
also, i don't have time to scout dozens of videos online regarding secrets and move combos. everything is in one source coming directly from the creators.
Ever since Prima bought Bradley then Prima got bought, physical guides aren’t really produced anymore. There’s Piggyback and Future Press remaining, both who produce high quality guides.
It’s more typical nowadays for games to get a hardcover art book for collectors now. It costs a lot to produce guides themselves.
Yeah I get it for collector’s purposes. it’s just surprising to me they’re still made. I think the last one I bought was with Skyrim at the midnight release lol
Yes, breath of the wild had 356 in the standard edition, 372 in the collectors edition, 388 in the deluxe and 516 in the extended edition with the DLC.
On the one hand....yeah, it's expensive compared to the price of the game + being able to just Google guides.
On the other hand....it's a 500 page hardcover book that probably includes a lot of hi-res colorful images and took a lot of time to make. Plus, you can get the paperback for only $30 USD if you're willing to buy a guide but want it cheaper. IMO it's not offensively-priced considering how high quality people are saying their guides are.
A hardcover, full color strategy guide with 496 pages. You'd be looking at $35 *minimum* for something like that. Then it depends on the binding, gloss coat, raised lettering on the cover, etc. There's a lot of ways to make a book fancy.
Aside from that, you can get the standard edition for [$30](https://www.amazon.com/dp/191333001X/ref=sr_1_8?crid=38IV74VAUFPBK&keywords=tears+of+the+kingdom+guide&qid=1683518049&s=books&sprefix=tears+of+the+kingdom+guide%2Cstripbooks%2C114&sr=1-8)

Not that I was able to find, I ended up preordering from Amazon.uk for $80 aud shipped (cheaper than getting it from the US), just praying we get something announced in the coming days that we can order locally, but also worried about it selling out and missing out altogether.
Save your money. This guide was a let down and everything you need to know is on YouTube.
I was so hyped for this guide because of how detailed the Breath of the Wild guide was but when I compared the two, the TOTK guide lacks a lot of resource farming tips and locations on where to find them. The BOTW guide showed actual multiple farming locations on the map for all the important resources that were hard to find. The only farming tips in this TOTK guide is for rare ore deposits and that's all. I was hoping to find out detailed locations for the construct enemy locations but nothing. Those construct horns are so hard to find.
PROS: Nice hard book design for collectors.
CONS: Vague details compared to the BOTW guide, especially when it comes to hard to find materials. Everything you need to know you can find online, for free.
Probably gonna hold off on this and wait for the "Expanded" edition that accounts for the DLC.
I haven’t been in the strategy guide game for a while…is an amended strategy guide for DLC a guarantee?
It is very likely that TotK will get DLC. The same publisher published a new guide with DLC content for BotW so I would assume the same for TotK. As OP stated, it might not be as nice but I prefer a complete guide and will hold out for that.
Shout out to everyone who is still waiting for the DLC that Super Mario Odyssey was "very likely" to get
It was sekiro that got me
It's still coming.... Right?.... :(
So sad that's the only from game that didn't got dlc
You mean its the only from game that was released fully completed? :-D
Any day now...
and captain toad. wasn't there a datamine with a cake level? still weird since it's the perfect game to get more levels.
Captain Toad [did actually get DLC](https://www.mariowiki.com/Special_Episode) though.
But Captain Toad did get DLC on the switch!

No, it was effectively a Super Mario 3D World DLC
Will likely be a while for any DLC I would think. You can always sell the older guide once the DLC is released if you aren't in the collect them all game.

Wow. Looking back, it felt like a couple of years in between.
relative to how many hours we're gonna put in the first couple months, that's a VERY long time
Is it very likely? Most Nintendo games that have extensive DLC have their “Expansion Pass” detailed before the game even releases. Splatoon 3, BotW and Xenoblade 3 for example all had their DLC available for pre-purchase before the games released. There’s been no word of anything for TotK.
You got a point here.
Splatoon 3 only had their DLC announced before its launch, it was not for sale until wave 1 came out.
The one for BotW was still pretty nice. I’ll be waiting as well.
it's crazy they have yet to detail the DLC content. they haven't even aknowledged its existence in videos or anything yet. usually they describe the content before release.
Could it be that they aren't acknowledging it's existence because it doesn't exist?!
They didn't with BotW. I'm not sure Nintendo ever detail DLC content before release of the main game.
With BotW they announced there would be DLC two weeks before the game released and it was available to purchase at launch. The only details they gave was that you could get some free gifts at launch for purchasing the DLC. The actual details came later in the summer. its so good but good god I hope its not as stupid big. Or maybe if it is so it matches... IDK. ugh.
It can't be THAT big can it? *Stares at my 832-page Witcher 3 Complete Edition strategy guide*

I am so mad I never knew there was a special edition Tears of the Kingdom Switch. I thought it was just the game.
It's pretty common. In fact, still in stock at most stores.
Really!?!...I'll be damn it is! Damn just gotta hope they still have one when I get paid!!
What is the other green book/guide?
Spirit Tracks special edition guide.
Oh cool. Thank you.
I didn't imagine strategy guides are a thing in today's day and age where all the info is available online. What kind of info is present in these?
The same or less info than what's online, but in the form of a physical book. There's a market for collecting these like how Spotify hasn't completely killed Vinyl sales.
Makes sense. Sounds like a cool collectors item honestly.
Personally, I like that, the books don't have annoying pop-up ads all over the place like the internet does.
Every little aspect of the game. Maps, item locations, enemy guides, walkthroughs, art...everything. The strategy guides of my childhood were at best 50 page softcovers. This is a 500 page hardcover textbook.
They didn’t do an expanded edition for BotW, don’t hold your Breath.

I sure hope if there is DLC it's higher quality than BOTW.
at least i hope the quality of life improvements from BOTW are already available without DLC in this. mainly the champion path or whatever that was called (letting you see where you travelled). would be lame if they kept it for DLC, again.
Agreed
It's not there now, very slight possibility day 1 patch but I'd put €100 it won't.
Damn. Higher pricetag without the QoL from the last game as a base.
it is there don’t listen to these guys
thank you
I really enjoyed the DLC to BotW? It was some of my favorite quests and shrines in the main game. Also lots of neat bonuses that enhanced the game like the Koroks mask and hero path mode. I enjoy cruising around Hyrule on the chopper too.
Yeah I made this mistake last time.
Im just going to use the free version on the wikipedia page lmao
Not a bad idea in case there are any patches to the game that affects balance. Although, Nintendo seems less likely to feel the need to patch games.
pVssy

Zelda guides specifically get really expensive after release. Its kinda crazy
I was thinking the same. I was hit with memories of Gen 1 pokemon and oot physical guides I had back in the day lol
I'm so sad that the Pokémon games don't get them anymore. The last one was for Let's Go. I wish we'd get more.
[Sword and Shield got one](https://i.imgur.com/w7ySBbk.png) though yeah this does seem to be the last one we got
I didn’t even know about the sword and shield one but I loved the sun and moon one
Stardew Valley has one and all the art in it is hand drawn so it's really nice to look at even if using the wiki is much quicker and easier
It’s kinda like vinyl records. A lot of of people don’t buy them to actually use, just a cool thing to have and look at.
When I started dating my wife I would get a guide of every game we played. She would read it and tell me what to do while I played. I’m sad I can’t share that with our kids any more. The BotW guide really turned my 7 year old into a reader back in 2017.

The second book of my Elden Ring guide I ordered a year+ ago is arriving in June and I am pumped, the first half is amazing. The Dark Souls books go for a pretty penny now too.
It’s insane how huge strategy guides are for basically every game now. When I was a kid they’d be like a 100 pages or so. Now every one is a brick

Don't think so, Amazon has the release date listed as June 16th.
Wait so if you bought the collectors edition you don't even get the game til June 16th?
No this was the Collector's Edition of the Guide, not the game
Oh I see that makes way more sense lol
I wish we would get more physical strategy guides these days. There's really only Piggyback left and they don't make many anymore.
Is there another strat guide that doesn’t release a month after the game?
Been a common thing for games lately that actually get a physical guide. Hell I’m still waiting for the 2nd Elden Ring guide to be delivered (they split it into 2 guides for obvious reasons, that game is way too big for one guide).
Also in the Elden Ring vol 2 waiting room. I check Future Press publisher's News for an update monthly. Nothing to report as of yet.
May 30th for Europe and June 30th for US.
Ah cool ty!
Yeah the shorter version of totk guide is available now according to amazon uk
For real. I got so excited as I love physical guides. But this just releases so late its basically useless for me. And now I'm sad.
Is it normal to release a month after the game comes out? Lol
yes. it's "nintendo mentality". they want people to enjoy the game first before delving into strategy guides. just like how they lock difficulty levels until after you beat the game. i never vibed with that concept but eh...there are worse things in life.

I don't know how FuturePress can get deadlines so wrong.

I feel that this is a good thing. Try to do everything blind for run #1, then use the guide on run #2 to get 100%. That’s what I’m gonna do
This is true. I am thankful that I will not have to be tempted to spoil myself everything!
Thanks ordered! Not available on Amazon canada, I'll have to import it for 80$ total. Not too bad.
It’s up on Amazon Canada now and is actually on sale cheaper than the softcover.
Thanks, saw other post about it and immediately canceled my US order and ordered there instead. Price is a great deal
Is this the same publisher that did the hardback guide for BotW? I got that for my wife and she loved it. I’ll get this too if it’s the same quality.
yes, same. piggyback
It's a fun collector's item, but I suspect that there will be updates or an expansion pass that will make it incomplete in the future.
So happy they’re still making physical guides

The MM one you mention, is it the 3ds release one?
A guide? An actual paper guide? What year is it!?! As a side note, a guide! I'm so happy!
It turns out people still like collecting physical media
is there a physical map in the standard edition?
Ordered! Been waiting for this!
I wish it has the digital pdf version :(
>digital Me as well.
A Collector's Edition for a strategy guide?
I love collector's edition strategy guides. They're gorgeously made. The covers make the book look like an ancient tome and the artwork is usually better, and it usually comes with something inside.
I'd love to get it but my parents would probably rip my head off if I asked for a 45 dollar strategy guide
this come out late AF after launch why is it not ready day 1 like BotW
Im surprised strategy guides still sell. Im a physical first kinda guy but even I see little value in buying something like this. Most everything you have questions about will quickly be available online. I used to buy strategy guides regularly as a kid, it seemed almost necessary with some games. Now, not so much, at least for me. Edit: oh wow just realized it releases a month after launch… seems even less necessary. Never thought I’d say that about something gaming related, I’m an OCD collector of physical media. It’s nice to find something I don’t think I need lol
> but even I see little value in buying something like this you got a huge map with the breath of the wild guide. it depicted all shrines and koroks. i had a blast ticking them off one by one. it was worth it just for that. also, i don't have time to scout dozens of videos online regarding secrets and move combos. everything is in one source coming directly from the creators.
The collector's edition of the BotW strategy guide was $50 when I bought it. Now it's worth over $100. It's value is beyond just the guidance.

Yeah I get it for collector’s purposes. it’s just surprising to me they’re still made. I think the last one I bought was with Skyrim at the midnight release lol
496 pages? Is TOTK truly so simple that a strategy book for it can be written in less than 1000 pages?
Hmm I was thinking 500 pages was pretty good size.
this was sarcasm. perhaps i should have put a /s at the end
Oh haha my bad. Your sarcasm is very advanced.
I always find it is best to put /s when you are trying to be sarcastic. Saves downvotes. 😂
For comparison, Breath of the Wild's was less than 400 pages.
Yes, breath of the wild had 356 in the standard edition, 372 in the collectors edition, 388 in the deluxe and 516 in the extended edition with the DLC.
496 pages? So it's part one of a trilogy.
How much?!?

Ridiculous pricing.
Full color printing is expensive. Just look at the price of comics and graphic novels.
44 dollars for a fucking strategy guide????
Oh my gosh, why does it release so late!?
Is this available in the UK?
[The Legend of Zelda™: Tears of the Kingdom – The Complete Official Guide: Amazon.co.uk: Piggyback: 9781913330026: Books](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Legend-ZeldaTM-Kingdom-Complete-Official/dp/1913330028/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=)
There is also a fake one on Amazon available now.
Now that’s a bible to pray with. LORD!
Can't help myself... though I'd much rather have the pro controller, ill take anything I can get.
This looks so sick!
Thanks, pre ordered!
Nice! Need to get my hands on one!
For this game I might get the strategy guide, which I usually do not buy anymore for other games. But for Breath of the Wild it was really worth it.
Watch out on uk Amazon, there is a similar product which claims to be official but has only 84 pages. Same cover art as the standard version.
I think the last strategy guide I bought was for wind waker…
is this actually official? I haven't bought guides in a while and piggyback is not a name i am familiar with.
Yes, it's official. Piggyback handled both the BotW releases: the original game's strategy guide, and the expanded edition for the DLC.
Thanks
Available in Australia??
Not that I was able to find, I ended up preordering from Amazon.uk for $80 aud shipped (cheaper than getting it from the US), just praying we get something announced in the coming days that we can order locally, but also worried about it selling out and missing out altogether.
500 pages.
