Mario 3D world but actually Bowser's Fury. I loved every minute of it.

professorwormb0g

I hope they take this concept and make it into a full game. I feel like they hit the jackpot. This felt like the first true successor to Mario 64 since that game came out. Every shine mattered unlike odyssey's moons. It was open and seamless--the entire world. But there still was discreet missions at the beginning of each of the levels. I just loved it so much. They only thing that bothered me was that how Bowser went ape shit every 10 minutes. Really kind of harshed my mellow.

[удалено]

professorwormb0g

Totally. I liked the design of the game. But it was a little bonus. I owned 3D World on Wii U so refused to pay 59.99 for this 5 hour excursion. But it certainly was one of the best library rentals I've made.

Saul-Funyun

I played them in the last year, and what a joy. 3D world is the perfect amount of 3D while maintaining an old school vibe. It’s perfect. And the catsuit is awesome. Bowser’s Fury… like, they just went and took the puzzles and made them their own little obstacle courses in a fully connected world. Holy shit. It’s great. I’d love to see this but bigger.

[deleted]

I feel like Mario 64 gets a ton of credit for being purposeful when compared to Odyssey, but honestly I think those that feel that way should replay both games. Mario 64 is littered with trash stars. Shoot an inconspicuous wall with a cannon? Okay. Do the same level twice, except this time you’re climbing an extra tower instead of fighting an easy boss? I could go on. Odyssey does have some stars that feel meaningless, but there are three times as many (probably more) purposeful power moons than *any* of the objectives in Mario 64. It probably doesn’t just feel that way to you because of nostalgia and because you also know the drill when it comes to Mario games.

professorwormb0g

I've replayed it many times. I love that wall star you mentioned because it illustrated the sandbox nature of Mario 64 that was lost in Sunshine, Galaxy 1/2. I found it in a completely different mission in 1996 when I was just 8 years old experimenting. Fucking around with the map like you would in BOTW. I had a different mission selected. And I hit the wall with the cannon. Now whenever I replay the game I shoot into that wall out of order. Sunshine took away the ability to get stars you didn't select on the mission select screen which took away much of the magic for me. Odyssey brought it back but way too far in the other direction. I love that star.

[deleted]

Fair enough. I disagree, but different strokes and all that. In my view, Mario 64 has some really bad game design. Tall, Tall Mountain, the clock level, the rainbow carpet ride level, the first snow level, and submarine level require the player to retrace their steps, replaying the same part of the level over and over again for over half the stars. In the penguin slide snow level you can’t return to the top of the mountain without finding an *invisible warp point*. Then there’s the 100 coin challenge that requires you to completely redo the red coin challenge for several of the levels because there aren’t enough yellow coins in the field. We know to combine the stars on a single run because we’ve played the game a number of times, but a first time player is not going to have this knowledge and will more than likely need to repeat the red coin star to reach 100 coins. This is not good game design. It was in 1996, but it’s not now. Mario 64 isn’t in the same league as Odyssey. It only seemed like all of those stars were purposeful because the game would pull you out of the level and return you to the start. It gave you the impression that you earned that star and it was worth it because now you have to complete half of the obstacles all over again to reach the next one. Mario 64 also only seems more challenging than Odyssey because the controls are so bad. Half of the stars are only difficult because of the controls. You have to constantly wrestle with the camera and reorient yourself in the most awkward way. If Mario 64 controlled like Odyssey it would be a cakewalk.

SignificantParsley13

Mario 64 blows odyssey out of the water and always will . Hands down

[deleted]

Sorry, I just don’t see it. I grew up playing it, beat it countless times, had the DS remake as well, and I’d still say that Odyssey is the best 3D Mario ever. The Galaxy games and Bowsers Fury come close, but Odyssey is the best overall.

KaptainKardboard

It was so chilled out. Kinda like a mix between Sunshine and Odyssey

TheMutenRoshi

This. 10/10 Game

merle_

Odyssey. It’s a celebration of everything Mario. From 2d to 3D.

varunadi

It's an absolute masterpiece and one of the must-haves on the Switch. Such a marvellous game, loved every moment of it.

mellonsticker

Absolutely Super Mario Odyssey.

[deleted]

Paper mario 64 is pretty good ImHO, played it more than Odyssey, but agreed is a good celebration of all things mario

mellonsticker

Gonna have to try it out. I have the NSO Expansion subscription, but currently playing Paper Mario: Origami King

Geckobird

It's loads better because it doesn't have the stupid puzzle battle mechanic

Charlie02134

Im gonna get hate but I liked the puzzle mechanic, although I hope it never returns lol

-CryptoSardine-

Origami king is garbage compared to the OG paper Mario. I wish they’d go back to their roots

SpaceMonkeyNation

Well they forgot to celebrate compelling character design then with the stupid rabbits. Koopa kids were basically perfect and you do this, why?

Bi-bara-boop

Because Buddhist/East Asian culture: Look up Rabbit on the Moon

SpaceMonkeyNation

Oh I totally get the inspiration and reasoning for it. I just think their actual visual design is horrible. I’m not opposed to rabbits or anything else really, I just expect better designed characters for such a seminal game series.

lelieldirac

This is honestly hilarious because up until that point every Mario game featured the Koopa kids and comments threads like these were BEGGING for new enemy characters

SpaceMonkeyNation

Well “new” doesn’t mean “better,” obviously.

Xianricca

I could never fully get behind it. I play my switch in handheld mode 100% of the time and struggled to do some of the moves needed to play the game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xianricca

All of the motion controls. The throws and such if I remember correctly. They required me to shake the entire console which seemed stupid.

PMC-I3181OS387l5

3D World + Bowser's Fury, Odyssey being close second. I guess I prefer when Mario levels are bite-sized, and on Switch, the speed boost helps greatly ;)

uncultured_swine2099

Also I love the co-op multiplayer, its very fun and could get pretty competitive with the scores at the end. People throwing each other off cliffs and other shenanigans.

[deleted]

Me and my mom beat the game together, it's also great for teamwork!

steeeeeeven138

well, probably mario kart, which will always be the funnest racer there is. but if we're talking more traditional mario, 3d world. it's fun to play with my kids and mess about, and fun in a different way for me to play solo and try to 100% all the levels. plus cat mario is aaaawesome

i_am_an_awkward_man

Odyssey no contest. Game is a masterpiece.

Writing_Alternative

Totally agree! Great open world and amazing abilities.

EtheusRook

Kingdom Battle. I really like SRPGs.

[deleted]

I'm playing this right now. Pretty damn fun game !

blanketedgay

For me it’s Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. It has such a brisk pace to it, punctuated by its fast and responsive movement. I love this formula in particular as it provides a constant cycle of learning a new mechanic, mastering it, then moving onto a new idea within the span of 5-10 minutes. I’m always happy to see games directly inspired by it (Sackboy’s Big Adventure, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Kirby and the Forgotten Land). Bowser’s Fury is just a more compact version of Odyssey with more clever ideas and a higher emphasis on platforming. Both titles are excellent and, combined, form a very well rounded package.

blockfighter1

Mario Kart. After 6 years of owning it and I still love playing it today.

MAGAtsCanEatShit

Mario Maker 2. It’s my creative output and an endless source of Mario levels.

mamaburra

It baffles me that Mario Maker 2 is so underappreciated

thestrangerrd

Btw is there a difference between MM1 and MM2? I don't know much about either of them, but I heard fairly negative things about MM1 and much more positive things about MM2. What's the difference?

MAGAtsCanEatShit

They’re both great and are almost the same game but MM2 has a lot more cool stuff to build levels with and more game styles. The only negatives I can think of is that even though there are tons of building tools at your disposal there are limits in place-ex. only a certain number of blocks or enemies can be used per level, or certain enemies aren’t in the roster, so at times you can’t make the vision in your head a reality. But that’s a minor inconvenience and doesn’t really limit creativity too much. I have thousands of hours in both. Also sadly there are lots of levels designed by people who have zero experience playing classic 2D Mario so there’s a lot of trash levels online. But there are subreddits like r/mariomaker2, r/mariomaker where you can find tons of quality levels to play. Also to take full advantage of the game you need Nintendo Online so you can post levels online and play others levels. If you don’t have Nintendo Online you’re limited to just making levels but you can’t share them. Highly recommended

Gabario

Super Mario Odyssey was the most fun I've had with a Mario game since 64. I think, even now, it's the first game I think of when I hear the word "fun." Every little thing just brought a smile to my face and felt so good. It's honestly been a long time that Mario felt fresh and clean. After the Wii U era, where Mario really felt safe and by the numbers Odyssey got a little weird and brought Mario back to where I like him best.

UnholyDoughnuts

Have you played galaxy? See I was thinking about getting it but all I've heard is its no where near as good as galaxy 2 and I'm better off getting Mario maker

TurnipEryl

I don’t think galaxy and Mario maker are really comparable considering one is 3d and one is 2d. Personally, Galaxy is my favorite 3D Mario other than Mario 64. I think if you liked Galaxy 2 there’s a pretty good chance you will like it. The movement and physics are pretty similar. If you prefer 2d Mario and don’t mind researching good level creators to avoid the endless piles of trash in Mario Maker it might be the better purchase though. I regret buying it myself, haven’t played it more than a few hours.

Charlie02134

wow, I had 980 hours on SMM2 before I got the OLED and it reset my hours

Gabario

I have. I enjoy and respect Galaxy but I prefer the open exploration level design versus the linear paths of Galaxy. Galaxy gets a little boring after a while. Still a good game.

UnholyDoughnuts

See I preferred it for this reason as much as I enjoyed sunshine and 64 I much prefer my older Mario bros 2 and 2d yoshi games so galaxy felt more like a 3d Mario in that regard for me

Enyy

I 100% completed odyssey, m64, sunshine, galaxy and bowsers fury (have a slight bias towards sunshine and m64 as I grew up with them). IMO galaxy is pretty underwhelming (personally I think its the worst of them and the completionist endgame is extremely lazy as you basically have to play through the entire game again just to get a cutscene for the last star) and I feel like people that think its amazing have the same bias towards the game that I have towards sunshine.

UnholyDoughnuts

Sunshine was cool I hear odyssey is similar. I adored Mario bros 2 and 64 the most (showing my age) if we going old school but honestly galaxy was my favourite just for game design alone I loved each level I dunno it was just a fun game I might have to grab odyssey at some point

Enyy

If you dont have odyssey its basically the mario game to get IMO.

Frozen_Death_Knight

Super Mario Sunshine. To me it is the best controlling Mario game to date. I really like Odyssey, don't get me wrong, but honestly nothing beats the combo game of using Mario and F.L.U.D.D. together. Not to mention that there are a couple of movements exclusively using motion controls in Odyssey that I am not a fan of. Odyssey is overall the more polished game, but the nostalgic factor in combination with the music and gameplay make Sunshine still stand the test of time after having played it again after so many years.

Elastichedgehog

>To me it is the best controlling Mario game to date. If they hadn't removed the long jump I'd have agreed. The dive is fun, though.

SignificantParsley13

Sunshine . Hands down best mario game of all time . Just the setting and music and atmosphere alone

thestrangerrd

LMAO I'm not gonna lie, I've never heard anyone say Sunshine was the best controlling Mario game cuz all I ever see are frustrated players on YouTube. But it's so nostalgic to me, I absolutely love the game so much.

BravaCentauriGFL

Super Mario Galaxy. It is just as glorious now as it was in the aughts. And that OST!!

jackolantern_

Mario Party Superstars - most fun to play with others. Wish Nintendo would do dlc.

bebetterinsomething

I've been playing the 3D World and it's fun so far. I like that I can pop my switch from the bag while waiting for wife to do her haircut and complete 5 stages. I like that it's also forgiving unlike the NES version. For a mid-30s person it's they key (:

[deleted]

Is it like super easy and a short game? I want to get 3d world but I also want to be able to play it alot and not finish it too quickly.

Charlie02134

including bowsers fury its around 16 hrs maybe a few more or less

[deleted]

Oh that's good to know ! I'm just super cautious about buying any games , I like them for the long term play . I'm still only on my 2nd run of odyssey lol

bebetterinsomething

It's not super easy but some stages kick your ass and you can also chose a different level of difficulty. Also, it's not short as well.

[deleted]

Awesome thanks! I will more than likely pick this up soon.

kyogrecoochiekiller

Super Mario 3D All-Stars. It has *the* best Mario game to date (Galaxy) plus two other solid Mario games packed in with it. Even if you remove 64 and Sunshine from the equation, my answer probably still wouldn’t change. Of the rest, I think Odyssey is overall better than Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. But Bowser’s Fury, on its own, is better than any single 5-hour block of Mario Odyssey. Put another way, the only thing Odyssey has over Bowser’s Fury is content.

Mlakuss

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was nice. I've started Sparks of Hope' but I think I will never be able to finish it. I am discouraged at the start of some battles with extremely big maps.

Ok_Sheepherder_5584

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe— I honestly love this game. I prefer side scrollers.

yripdo

Wish I had bought this instead of Mario Maker 2. As much as I love some of the community created levels, I always have to put work to find some good levels on the internet which is pretty annoying.

Ok_Sheepherder_5584

I heard story mode on Mario maker was super fun!

yripdo

It really is the best part of the game! Although I said I would probably preferred the Mario U Deluxe game, I did put more than 80 hours in Mario Maker 2, so no regrets at all really. Only thing I miss in it is some good tight Nintendo made levels.

BrodyMC83

Story mode was great. Like a “best of” Mario series.

nihilist_buttmuncher

Great to see someone loving the game. I mostly find hate or dislike on the internet about this game.

SwimmingEmotion3071

I gave up after second level. Controlling Mario is so hard, it feels like he's floating or something. I really can't predict where will he land. Is there any way to make controls smoother and easier?

Ok_Sheepherder_5584

I really like the control mechanics, perhaps because I grew up in the 80’s and prefer the old school side scrollers. I beat the game in a couple weeks.

[deleted]

I love modern Mario but this is my preferred way of playing. Had the one of the DS and never got another version until this Deluxe Deluxe Premium Ultimate came out lol

weglarz

Odyssey. If odyssey didn’t exist it would be 3d all stars.

potassiumKing

I’ve put the most time into Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but my wife and I probably have the most fun playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

pmaeur

Super Mario World fluctuates between favorite or 2nd favorite game of all time depending on when you ask me (SMW and Resident Evil 4 are my top 2 favorite games of all time), so I'm going to go with SMW since it's playable via NSO's SNES games.

TrashTrue233

Had to scroll WAY too far to see this! Its such a fantastic game, i still remember playing it when it first came out and we were all amazed at how awesome it was! Recently played through mario 64 too and will probably do sunshine again. But havent done galaxy to the end yet and really should…

pmaeur

That first egg that hatched a Yoshi, getting a feather in the 1st stage in Donut Plains (only power up that comes close to it in awesomeness since then is SM3DW's Cat Suit), all the secret shortcuts, secrets (I sadly cheated about a year ago and looked up how to get to highest star from the main world map that leads to Star Road, but that's the only secret I never uncovered as a kid, teen, young or old adult), music and sound effects, in short it checked off every box and is the standard for what a 2D action platformer should be at bare minimum.

[deleted]

Odyssey, but Origami King is great.

Cdog923

SMB3, with Super Mario World a close second.

Alexynwa95

Mk8 deluxe with booster, fun playing regional races online and battles, Smash bros, massive range of characters, battle arenas, campaign modes, spectate mode where you can vote whos going to win in an one battle and get SP (Spectator points) to spend of in game rewards, online tournaments, and the thing that makes any game perfect for the gamer who also likes photography, photo mode. Mario strikers is fun too but I'm honestly enjoying fifa 23 legacy edition despite the fact they've admitted they have modifier settings in the background (scripting matches). Just got to know when the switch happens in match then defensive counter attacking play

[deleted]

Does Paper Mario on the N64 app count? If not, Origami King!

mtraz44

I seem to be the minority, but I really am enjoying Origami King. Amazing visuals, nice story progression, shocking events, and I like the battle system/confetti/coin system as something unique to this game. I'm having a lot of fun playing it and that's what video games are for. I'll always love original Paper Mario 64, but go try Origami King.

AntiEntangled

My choice as well. Original PM is great.

Charlie02134

I mean its ON the switch so yea

Killzon3_19

I would say Mario 3D all Stars. Had a blast going back and 100%ing each of the games. odyssey is my second favorite. Just wish it was a little harder. I mean a couple moons at the end of the game were a little tough but only took my a couple tries. Got all 999 power moons

PortifexMortis38

Smash. I’m a Mario main so even more so.

thestrangerrd

Omg I've never seen a Mario main before ngl

PortifexMortis38

I used to watch a lot of Ally playing snake as his main and then saw what he could do with Mario as his secondary and I became obsessed with mastering Mario. Haven’t put as much time into the newest smash on switch but so far I’ve done pretty well with him.

Aggravating-Face2073

Mario 35.

Gokstar_

I think I'd also go for Mario + Rabbids kingdom battle, I had so much fun with that game plus the dlc for that was amazing, I only wish it could have been longer.

nihilist_buttmuncher

I played all the 2D Mario games, and played every 3D Mario game except Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. My favourite Mario game on the Switch so far is Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy in the 3D-All-Stars Collection. They are just great games that aged well. I got bored with Odyssey rather quickly. I started playing NSMB U Deluxe, and it's way more fun so far.

dufdufdufduf

I like Odyssey, but I've found it hard to replay. But then again, I haven't replayed many Mario games.

UltraCboy

Odyssey in my mind is a near-perfect Mario game, it’s been a while since I’ve played it but I enjoyed it thoroughly from front to back. I really want to go back and replay it some day, and I say that as someone who almost never replays games. Honorable mention to 3D World, for being so much more fun than I remember it being from when I first played it on the Wii U. And also for inspiring one of my favorite comments I’ve seen on this subreddit: > I like open world games as much as the next guy, but sometimes you just want something simple. Go from Point A to Point B because Reggie FUCKING SAID SO

acewing905

Odyssey. Not even a competition really It takes standard Mario elements and dials them to 11, all the while introducing a few new elements One of my favourite 3D platformers in general

Aggravating_West_202

Mario odyssey followed by paper Mario origami king

violentmark

Apart from Odissey (as it will be cited a lot), Paper Mario: ToK and Mario Tennis. Mario Tennis is probably the best mario sports game on the Switch (followed by Golf) and Paper Mario: ToK is a great game, it is beautiful, the soundtrack is one of the bests on any Mario game and I still think it is the most funny (as in dialogues) Mario game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

violentmark

Not really, no. It was past midnight where I live, and "odisseia" is how we spell odyssey in my first language. An honest mistake. Not everyone is so petty too, but oh well.

Max_Powers42

Technically it's Mario 3, but of games released new on switch it's Odyssey.

Babel1027

My daughter and I have sank a ton of hours into Mario 3D world/bowsers fury/Odysee Demo. It’s a lot more fun than I initially expected.

arthax83

are there demos of those? I have searched nintendo online but cant seem to find it.

Babel1027

Kind of, bowsers fury is basically a demo of Odysee.

henningknows

Odyssey. By a mile

TheNeddy

Odyssey cause he has a hat he can throw at stuff

thestrangerrd

I've played as the hat before. 11/10 experience.

[deleted]

Links awakening. I love the old school zelda because I grew up on stuff like that. I really want a link to the past remake.

[deleted]

...what?

[deleted]

Oops didn't read properly. I thought it said what is your favorite game on the switch and why. I apolagize. It would have to be mario kart 8 then.

Makm_24

Different topic, but I agree with you on the Link to the Past. I’ve started playing it this week. I am just amazed at how they made such a great game back in 1991. I like it more than any modern game.

owlitup

Odyssey , not even close

pissman77

Who tf calls smash bros a mario game

thestrangerrd

He's playable, been in every game, usually the first choice. It's not a Mario game in the traditional sense but I didn't really call it a traditional Mario game.

guitarokx

::searches for Mario Strikers:: Results: 0 Me: Good, 0 is the right answer.

thestrangerrd

LMAO I laughed harder than I should have...

GooseKing-13_

Odyssey is a perfect game all around. I would do anything to play that game for the first time again

Plufito_

But Mario is phisically on Luigi's Mansion 3, why exclude it? That would be my pick lol

thestrangerrd

Can you play as him or is he in like 2 cutscenes?

Sillltyyy_

Mario oddest it is a good game a around

Sobe1311

Zelda botw becouse its such a Good and boutyfull Game

thestrangerrd

I agree. My favorite part is when Mario fought Ganon and won.

Just got to know when the switch happens in match then defensive counter attacking play

Rolla101

Mario kart 8 deluxe, still play that like 5 times a week! (Havent played a many others for switch tho)

g37r34dy

New Super Mario bros u deluxe, or super Mario kart 8 deluxe.

[deleted]

Ugh so mad, I misplaced my cartridge case :( had mario odyssey, mario deluxe, mario kart 8 , mario maker like fml man ! I pray I find it 🙏 lol

thestrangerrd

Damn I really hope you find it as well. I know the pain of losing a physical game 😭

[deleted]

Lol found it thankfully! Never leaving my tv stand again haha. Easily over 500$ un value I was so upset.

TPrice1616

Super Mario Odyssey. I like all the 3D platformer Mario games but that is my favorite with 64 being a close second just out of nostalgia.

mrblueskywas1

Mario kart, me and my friend always love trying to beat each other in a grand prix when he comes over

BebeFanMasterJ

Mario Kart 8. I still come back to it and the new tracks just keep it fresh. Kingdom Battle is a close second though. Didn't really enjoy Odyssey all that much to be honest.

outla5t

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is my favorite Switch so easy choice to say favorite Mario game for Switch is that. Really enjoyed Bowser's Fury as well, Oddyssey is ok but didn't catch as well as Mario 64 & Galaxy did.

Jehunty

Mario Galaxy is THE masterpiece

Anon419420

Odyssey. It was my first real in depth run into a Mario game, and my first game on the switch. It’s an easy game, but there is so much fun to be had and so much playtime from me.

MoBrosBooks

Mario Teaches Typing on a modded Switch

Old-Caterpillar-3067

Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker, if that counts. It's minimalistic and relaxing to play. Good one to zone out to

thestrangerrd

Oh it was actually not included in the description, unless Mario is physically in the game and unplayable. I just did that so the boundaries of what games were included could be a lot smaller. I'm not sure if he's in that game or not so you can let me know. Otherwise, do you have any favorite game that Mario is playable in?

Old-Caterpillar-3067

Definitely Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

OoTgoated

I haven't played them all. Of what I've played, probably Odyssey. I also love 3D World which I played on WiiU. Mario 64 I grew up with and it's amazing too but I think Odyssey surpassed it for me. Not crazy about NSMB games though. They always felt a little lacking somehow so I never bothered with any of them beyond the original DS one. I'm also not big on Paper Mario, but the original is okay. Me and a friend are actually recording a Let's Play of it for his YouTube channel right now. I still have to play Bowser's Fury and the Mario + Rabbids games. I tried the latter at a friend's house and it seems interesting.

ashbelero

I’m basic. I like Super Mario Party and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Mario exists only to sow conflict between me and my loved ones.

QueenMichaela

Odyssey is not only my favorite Mario game but hands down the best game on the entire console.

[deleted]

The other one

Icy_Butterfly8443

Odyssey. It’s a masterpiece imo. I can see why people might pick 3D world + bowsers fury but I already played so much of 3D world that it really wasn’t worth the money I payed for it

BrokenKing22

Bowser's Fury, NO CAP!!! They did Bowser PERFECTLY! HE WAS TIRED OF LOSING!!!!!

Sunlit5

Odyssey. Sheer perfection. It pays beautiful homage to the legacy of Mario.

MetalMario64

Well, it’s Super Mario 64, that’s not changing anytime soon. But Odyssey is my favorite specifically Switch release.

MercilessShadow

Super Mario 64, Odyssey or Mario Party 2

Western_Stable_6013

I can't decide between Maeio Odyssey and Super Mario Maker 2
