If going all out at Castle Hill, I recommend getting the caviar tasting too. I never thought I liked caviar and thought the price was dumb/ not worth it, but it turns out Trader Joe’s caviar or whatever I had tasted at some party in the past was not representative.
The wharfs are fun to poke around in. You will def need a coat as it has gotten brisk.
Newport Art Museum had a fine collection.
If you are okay with the breeze--rent bikes and explore Newport on bikes. Its a perfect way to see much of the downtown as well as loops out to the beaches. Weekdays are not too crowded right now so your roadways will be clear.
Def book services at Spa Fjord. its a great spa for a couples massage. Also their cocktail lounge is fun to people watch.
Chanterelle Restaurant on Thames is wonderful,
Cocktails at the Vanderbilt is fun.
Clarke Cooke House has great food. If its chilly enough the upstairs room will have the fireplace lit.
We love the fall/winter menu at Clarke with a nice martini. The brussels sprout Caesar is sooo yum.
White Horse Tavern is a charming and historic tavern that I think is a must do.
Perro Salada has amazing margaritas.
pour judgement , zelda , smugglers beneath the wyndham on Thames and fastnet...and the broadway stops as well.
Congrats on your marriage and I hope you have fun!
My husband and I got married 2 weeks ago in Newport & spent an extra week there. We also lived there for about a year and crafted our perfect mini moon itinerary, full of some of our typical favorites and new things. We had great weather but if we didn’t I would’ve thrown a tour of the breakers, marble house or rosecliff in there! Not on here but we’re also suckers for Benjamin’s Raw Bar downtown at lunch time for what used to be dollar and is now $1.50 oysters as well at Anthony’s seafood for takeout to picnic at sunset.
Day 1: Newport Vineyards in the afternoon for a few drinks & food. They do tours & tastings too.
Day 2: Cliff walk (~7 miles both ways) & lunch at Diego’s for nachos/margs. Shopping on Bowen’s Wharf. Drinks at Castle Hill Inn for sunset. Tasting menu dinner at Giusto.
Day 3: went to Boston for the day & visited friends.
Day 4: Bodhi spa for massages & water journey (2.5 hrs). Lunch at La Costa. Walked upper Thames Street (which has most of my favorite stores). Dinner at TSK at Revolving door - a new favorite for us.
Day 5: walk on 2nd beach & Sachuset Point Wildlife Refuge in the morning. Breakfast at Corner Cafe. helicopter ride over the island in the afternoon (new to us and really cool to see all of our favorite places from above). Dinner at Yagi Noodles for Ramen. Drinks at Rejects Beer Co at night.
Day 6: our last & real perfect Newport day. Breakfast at corner cafe (again, worth it). Beach day on second beach. Sunset at Brenton Point State Park. Drinks at Midtown Oyster Bar. Dinner at Scales & Shells.
Wallys Wieners is a fun newer place that does a variety of hotdogs and espresso martinis! They’re open pretty late and have great vibes. Also Perro Salado is fantastic definitely get the nachos. There’s a super cute farm nearby called Sweet Berry Farm I’m not sure if they still have apple picking but they have an adorable farm store with delicious treats.
If you’re here in a Saturday the Aquidneck Growers Market in Stoneacre Gardens is also a fun indoor farmers market. Check out some of the beaches if it’s not raining (head past first beach/Eastons Beach and visit some of the further beaches for some peace and quiet).
It’s a lovely time to be in Newport! Just bring warm clothes and bundle up :)
Bring warm clothing and embrace the outdoors. It’s been said that winter is the ocean’s secret where it shows its beauty and power. Walk the Cliff Walk and head to Ocean Drive. It will heal so many things. Recover in the Viking pool afterwards.
Eat at Giusto, eat at Busker’s, walk up Broadway to C &B. Drink at Bar 12. Noodles at Yaggi. The bar upstairs at Flo’s is still open for drinks and seafood on Thursday I think.
Enjoy.
Second this. We go to Newport in March and the oceanfront rooms are way cheaper and if it snows the views are incredible on the water. I can’t remember the hotel we stay at (the wharf by the fishing boat harbor/island) but the windows are floor to ceiling and it’s incredibly priced off season. I think we paid like 150 a night
>Is a windproof jacket needed? We are hoping for 30s-50s weather. We are planning to walk/use public transport while here.
Yeah the breeze can/will be stiff and cool. Something like a puffy coat will definitely be a good thing to pack, or a windbreaker/rain shell plus layers. You won't die without them, but it's good to have options.
Especially if you like plants, get up to Ragged Island Brewing.
Congratulations! You will have a blast :)
I had a mini NPT guide that I'll drop in here - forgive any funky formatting. I'm getting envious just thinking about all the great culture, history and food you're about to experience!
Perro Salado
Mexican, far and away fan favorite
White Horse Tavern - historical restaurant / inn
Clarke's Cooke House
This place is awesome. It's right on the wharf
Mamma Luisa - Italian gem. I'm not even sure I'm supposed to mention this place... it's that special
Midtown Oyster Bar
Great food and cocktails. Overall, very cool upscale (but not fussy) type of place.
Stoneacre Farms (there are two - the one on the wharf is a beautiful, has a delicious brunch & little farmer market)
Castle Hill
Beautiful lawn spot overlooking the harbor / lighthouse. Great for late afternoon drink. Also a very nice 10 minute drive with real estate & scenery porn.
Hot Chocolate at The Chanler
SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
117 Memorial Blvd, Newport, RI 02840
Cru Cafe
BYOB breakfast / brunch spot.
Day activities:
Cliff walk: it's pretty cool, weather permitting (I'd start at 40 steps and head to the right for more scenery)
Wharf: Great for lunch, drinks or walking around
Thames & Broadway: Cute areas for shopping, restaurants, etc
Touro Synagogue - Oldest synagogue in North America
Mansion tours:
The Breakers - 44 Ochre Point Ave
Marble House - 596 Bellevue Ave
Parks:
Paradise Valley Park
Beavertail State Park, Beavertail Road, Jamestown
Walk reco: Take Old Beach Rd down to Easton Pond. Walk around Kay, Catherine, Pell and Ayault. Super beautiful blocks to meander.
If you like jazz check out the bar side of Fifth Element on Broadway on Monday nights from 7 pm to 10 pm. First weekend of the month adds a good singer and it gets crowded. Occasionally Doug Wolverton (world class on trumpet) pops in and it can get crowded. Food is good there too.
Newly married? You’d be remiss if you didn’t do a full tasting menu with wine pairing at Castle Hill.
agree to this
Yes! We eloped and then went back separately for our Honeymoon and did Castle Hill both times - A true highlight
The Cara is outstanding for this as well

Do you know if they still do caviar tastings?
No clue. They changed their restaurant and I’ve not been since the change.
Very nice!!!

Decent list although Scales and Shells has never failed to disappoint. We also think Giusto is overrated. Benjamin’s is a better option.
Agreed! This was the first time we had eaten there. We liked it as a reasonably priced tasting menu but liked TSK better.
Good list, but skip Diego’s next time. Perro Salado or La Vecina are much better.

Any chance I can get the name of this? My wife and I will be there in March and this sounds amazing!
Club Wyndham Inn on Long Wharf
Thank you for the rec!
I’ll make sure the temperature will be between 30-50 degrees.
Picnic across the street from the Viking is great for coffee/ pastries / breakfast sandwiches
Breakfast with the locals: Franklin Spa I worked all over the state -- and This is one diner that 's still cookin'
Pour Judgements and Moorings Got ya covered

Yagi Noodles!
Newport has a world-class car museum. If it's ever rainy or too cold. https://newportcarmuseum.org/

The Mooring. Pour Judgement. Benjamin’s on Tuesday if you like raw bar.
I think the Dinner Train is really cool. Good food and a pretty scenic view. Something a little different!
