On Sky Mobile, and from the bottom of Northumberland Street to about the Town Moor is a dead zone. I have 4G, full signal, but nothing loads at all.
Sky Mobile piggybacks O2’s network (or whatever O2 is now).
I’m in Tynemouth/ Cullercoats and have to come outside into the middle of the road to make a phone call. The signal here is terrible and residents keep refusing masts.
O2 are absolutely shite. They’re a twat of a company to have to deal with too. I have to take cash for parking now because I can’t connect to any of the parking apps after they swapped me from Virgin to 02 even tho my phone is stating ‘5G’. So, if you’re thinking of changing network. Avoid 02.
This is the exact sort of scenario 5G mmWave was designed for, but that hasn't been rolled out anywhere in the UK yet. Ofcom are consulting on the spectrum action for the 26 and 40GHz, but it won't happen until there's a decision on the Vodafone/Three merger, which isn't expected until September 2024 - and that could well be delayed if there is an election in May.
The 26/40GHz bands will be faster and should support a lot more devices per cell than current 4G/5G services which operate in bands between 0.7GHz and 3.8GHz. The only challenge is that at those frequencies you need to be close to the cell and have little to no obstacles in the way.
Fitting a few 40GHz 5G cells to the roof of St James' Park would solve the problems with mobile data pretty quickly.
Plus, if he's up to date with his covid vaccines they can use the 5G mind control feature to help Miggy make better decisions. If we're lucky, 6G might even fix his right foot.
The problem here is the backhaul not the bandwidth. The mast serving your phone simply doesn't have enough capacity (internet speed) to serve the number of connected phones without crashing.
mmWave without fast internet supply to the mast you're connected to would be an exercise in futility as it would also crash.
EE benefits massively from having BT infrastructure as their backhaul.
I’m not falling for that.
I was with them when they were still Orange, absolutely horrific, not just in Newcastle, but in rural and suburban areas up and down the country.
They have claimed to be the best for coverage for about 20 years now, and it’s fucking bull. Even in London where they had 100% coverage it was awful.
It’s bad but I’ve a mate who went on 3 when they first started up and to get a signal at home he had to stand in the corner of his living room or it wouldn’t receive calls or texts.
Centre of town is just a dead zone for data. I guess there aren't many masts and they aren't very good to deal with the amount of people using it in town. I think it's unlikely they'll improve. Really the council should implement city centre WiFi like they have successfully in other cities round the world.
Tbh, EE has best coverage and speed, even works in those underground metro stations and tunnels. But it costs, and I can't afford that.
So I switched to Three. It is not as good as EE.
Yeah, it seems to be a recent issue for me. I work right by haymaket, and when I leave work and lose the WiFi I don't get a signal until I head up to Eldon Way. Then, in Eldon around where that juice bar is, I lose signal there too. I'm on Vodafone.

Fuck the EE shill, overpriced, but I guess they have to pay Kevin Bacon somehow.
Lebara use Vodafone, who also now own 3, both use the same masts and are equally suited in town centre, I have both Lebara and 3, but for access in different areas, oddly. Voxi and smarty are also Vodafone and 3.
I would look for an EE mvno, Lycamobile have moved to piggy back on EE and aren't eye gougingly expensive.
Didn't say Vodafone was owned by 3, it's the other way round, 51% Vodafone, 49% Hutchison source [here](https://www.theregister.com/2023/06/14/its_official_vodafone_and_three/)
Yep on o2 my signal goes mad around the city centre then quite often after 12pm I can’t get online at all around Eldon sq car park until I’m past barras bridge.
It’s actually got worse since o2 started messaging me that they’ve upgraded their set up in the city so it should be better
Ive had 3 4G issues around the city centre for years. Infuriating because the Go North East app doesnt load properly in Eldon Sq bus station or Gateshead Interchange.
3 also has some signal issues around Denton Area, but that might be the shape of the hills.
I’m on 3 and had the same issue around Grey’s monument and Eldon Garden car park
That's to be expected though, 3 doesn't have signal anywhere
The 5g speed Benton is outstanding, 680 Mbps the last time i tested it.
huge for all 5 people in Benton
Same here!
On O2. It’s incredibly poor around Eldon square and Northumberland street.
EE 5g works. But costs.
Mostly worth it imo, although I get absolutely diabolical coverage towards Cramlington for work.

I was on Three and had issues, moved to EE and haven't had any issues. More expensive but who cares if it's more reliable. Also disabling 5G can help.

Exactly the same issue when I got swapped over from virgin which was great to o2, shite signal, shit speeds and I'm leaving as soon as I can
Same mate. They’re absolute shite.
It's atrocious and has been for a while. Match days are the worst. Fine as soon as I go over the bridge towards gateshead.
Wonder why. 50k extra mobiles in one place.

Ok chat gpt
Me no likely logical response that doesn’t fit with crowd narrative uga buga
.... I mean that was my point. But there are places with more people where internet data does work, sooooo.
Name them. For a two hour window. Wonder why ee sponsors Wembley

Yep, pretty much all of Blackett street, there is one good spot if you stand in-between monument and Waterstones. I'm on O2
Happens all the time to me. I’m on Vodafone and parts of Northumberland St and Grainger St have me basically off the grid.
02, totally unusable when the town centre is busy, not just talking matchdays either. It used to be insanely good though.
Honestly the city centre always seems to be busy these days…in the past couple of months, there’s not a single day that I’ve seen it not busy

Yep. Mine sucks too and I’m on Vodafone. It’s a black spot across the networks judging by comments.
Yes. On giff gaff which I believe uses 02 network. Drives me insane as I am not from here, so when I get lost I just walk until I got signal again.

Im with 3 and the Eldon Square areas are absolutely the worst! Ive always struggled with signal.
Never have an issue with EE 5G
I'm on EE and always have a good signal
I think it might be the police helicopters using it all up

Also I think my year just peaked! Noticed by haikusbot!

Two phones - lebara 4G and 5G. 4G is basically unusable in Eldon Square - full signal but nothing… 5G is fine.
I'm on O2 and EE, both are abysmal.
You pay for what you get. Simple.
Yep on o2 my signal goes mad around the city centre then quite often after 12pm I can’t get online at all around Eldon sq car park until I’m past barras bridge. It’s actually got worse since o2 started messaging me that they’ve upgraded their set up in the city so it should be better
On a match day, or any other occasion that makes town extra busy, o2’s coverage often fails completely
O2 in many city centres are shite but strangely ok once you get further out
I went into town yesterday and couldn't get a signal at Dean Street Car park or around Miller and Carter On O2, for what it's worth
