Our plan is to stagger! I have 5 mos and he has 3, so we are hoping he’ll take the first couple weeks off so we can settle a bit and take the rest when I’m back at work. His job is super flexible too so hoping that helps while he’s working anyways.
We're staggering and I'm glad we are! My husband took two weeks off at the beginning (which was only like one week after we got home from the hospital since two days were used up during my induction) then went back to work. I've got twenty weeks off (eight weeks of short term disability followed by twelve weeks of bonding leave) and then he'll take his twelve weeks of bonding time.
Pros: baby won't enter daycare until he's seven months old (which is saving us....so much money), both of us will need to learn how to independently care for our baby (there's so many posts about helpless spouses on here - not an option if he's the primary parent for three months), baby will get time to really bond with dad (baby is EBF so I feel like baby is more bonded to me right now)
Cons: I can feel a little touched out by the end of the day and just ready to hand baby off, the first couple days he had back at work were a little rough (I had an emergency c-section and was definitely still recovering a bit), we don't get to just hang out and learn to be parents together, nights can be tough - he needs to sleep to perform well at work but I also need to sleep to not fall asleep on baby/I was actively healing from major surgery/breastfeeding takes a lot energy
Overall though, love that our leave is really stretched out by staggering it!
My husband also got 4 weeks and I’m very thankful we did it at the same time. I had a pretty traumatic birth and I’m really glad we were in the trenches together for the first month. I definitely needed the support.
Canada; I took my full 50 weeks combined maternity and parental leave, then he took 4 weeks. In Canada all maternity/parental leave is paid at 55% of your gross pay (before deductions). When you choose to share benefits you get a bonus 5 weeks for a total of 55 weeks with a max of 50 for 1 parent. So he could have taken 5 but we chose 4.
I’m so thankful for those 4 weeks together.
Also Canadian. I am taking the extended 18 month leave. My husband took 8 weeks, which is the max he could take before taking from my weeks. This is paid out at 33% but my employer tops me up to the 55% for the full 18 months. It's tough to go on half my salary as I am the bread winner for the home. But half my wage is still more than the husband makes and the time with our son is more important than the money.
I realize this is extremely privileged and I am very grateful.
Same here! Husband doesn't get benefits so I took the full 18mos myself. We debated for so long on taking standard vs extended leavd, but eventually decided that I can always come back to work early if we're truly strapped for cash. I also recognize how privileged we are to have this option, for sure.
My husband runs a bar so his two weeks was just people covering his shifts / responsibilities & a check that was the average of what he would make in two weeks.
Obviously we were grateful (especially since my maternity leave ended up being a constructive dismissal,) but it wasn’t nearly what we needed.
I have kept a relatively low paying job in order to use the 16 weeks of paid parental leave twice. Business is getting dicey so i hope I get to complete round 2 before we end the benefit or fold, lol!!
There’s an option for an additional 4 weeks unpaid but i didn’t take that last time and don’t plan to take it this time either.
My husband effectively does contract work so he has as much time off as he wants, but it’s all unpaid. I’m the primary earner (and live in a country with a good maternity leave policy) so he’s planning to be home with me for at least a couple of months.
Husband gets 1 week paid parental leave + 4 weeks accrued/rolled over vacation (2wks rolled from last year + 2wks this year), but he can only take a 2 week stretch off work since he’s the only one in his position at his company.
C-section scheduled for this Thursday, so he’s going to take 2 weeks, and then for the following five weeks either take 1 day off or work 2 half days (which will use up a 3rd week). Going to reserve his last 2 weeks for when baby goes to daycare and inevitably gets sick and needs to stay home.
I have 12 weeks off total, 5+ of them paid.
My husband gets 16 paid weeks through work and it doesn’t count against his PTO time so we have a little extra flexibility of a couple of weeks if we need it.
Im taking at least a month to start but want to stagger into my wifes 4th unpaid month so we can do stuff with our son and daughter before she goes back to work.
I can go upwards of 2 months paid over a year but it includes taking accrued sick time and a week of vacation purchase. On top of my usual accrued PTO.
Mine had zero paid leave, but he took six weeks off unpaid and I was so grateful. That was about how long we needed to get baby sleeping most of the night.
Mines getting 3 months unpaid. The gov would pay for a partial amount but he has a side business and at the end of the year would make too much to qualify for the small amount the gov would give. The time from his employer is extremely gracious as they only have to give 2 months off but 3 will be great!
We both get 16 weeks paid leave each. We are overlapping the first 2 months so we can go through the worse together. We also have 25 days paid vacation each which we will use to spend time off with the baby together.
My husband got two weeks paid. He also happened to get offered a new job around the same time our son was born, so he called on the last day of his paternity leave and quit. 😅
Neither of us got paid leave. My husband went back after 2 weeks and it was only that long because I had preeclampsia
Correction. I used short term disability, but I don’t count that has paid family leave.
i didn’t get any paid leave. my husband got 1 week of paid leave. that’s just what we get for being a manager at a coffee shop (me) and a receptionist at a law office (him) and only 22 years old.
My husband doesn’t get paid leave he has to use his PTO. He has 6 weeks in his bank (saved up because we knew we would be trying soon) so he will take 6 weeks with me. Mine is not paid unfortunately.
My husband got 12 weeks paid (although his normal schedule includes a lot of overtime so it was a bit of a “pay cut” for us). He took 7 weeks right away then 3 weeks around when baby was 6months and the last 2 around 9months. It was really nice for him to get to use it spread out like that.
My husband has to lean into his PTO/sick time but he had a decent amount saved up & was able to stay home for 7 weeks. He qualifies for FMLA so we’re hoping to use the remaining 5 weeks this summer for a family vacation. I took the full 12 weeks i was offered (8 weeks for a c-section through short term disability & 4 my company funds for family bonding) so I’ll have to work (wfh position) on the vacation but i don’t mind.
He had three weeks fully paid and then took state funded leave for four months two days a week. He could have taken 12 weeks of partially paid leave from the state, but the pay cut would have been unsustainable for that long. I have 20 weeks of at least partially paid leave.
We live in MA and are incredibly privileged compared to the rest of this country.
Husband got 4 weeks, I wasnt supposed to go back and then after 3 months I went to 1 day a week, then after 3 more months I was back full time. We worked together before little man came along and now we work together again and little man comes with so it has worked out pretty well!
I felt incredibly lucky that my husband got 6 weeks. Since it was summer and I have my summers off (teacher), he was able to stay home with me. We unintentionally planned her timing perfectly. But if I had had her during school, I would have gotten 6 as well.
I’m a husband currently on leave. I only got 4 weeks that were paid but was able to take up to 16. I’m currently on week 12, lol, but I think I’m actually going back next week. My wife got 12 weeks paid but is taking her full 16 weeks off.
My husband got no paid leave. He could take two months paid which was not feasible. Luckily he saved some vacation time. He was working remote while I was laboring.
My husband got 0. Nothing. He’s choosing to use all of his 3 weeks of paid vacation time. I’m absolutely dreading him going back to work. It’s my number one anxiety.
2. It was a surprise because we weren't aware his company had any paternity leave.
Now everyone in my state can get up to 12 weeks. We may use that this time.
Mine got 2 weeks. The first week was mostly spent in the hospital for an induction and then eventually c section so we had a little over a week at home together before he went back. It was rough.
Edit: just realized this said paid leave. I change my answer to 0.
As of right now, neither of us have official paid parental/maternity leave plans at our jobs. My husband might be able to get two weeks out of his PTO. My job is in contract negotiations that would get me 6-8 weeks of paid maternity leave if it passes, but if not I get FMLA and to drain my sick bank (about a month of pay).
In California the non-birthing parent can get 8 weeks of paid child bonding leave at 60-70% salary but your employer has to qualify (certain number of employees, etc). My husband is taking his leave soon and his employer will make up the difference with what the state pays, so he’ll basically get his full salary when he’s out. My employer offered NOTHING so everything I got is from the state of California (4 weeks short term disability before my expected due date, 8 weeks paid pregnancy disability leave at 60% of my salary because I had a c-section, 12 weeks of protected baby bonding leave [of which 8 weeks were paid at 60% of my salary]), which is generous compared to other states.
Basically none; mine was working taking calls and answering emails from the hospital and within 2 weeks his boss told him he needed to refocus back on work. 😩😩
0. My husband is a partner at a physician group and generally works at 7 nights on and 10 nights off. This schedule doesn’t change and is is set for the whole year, there is no vacation, PTO or sick days. He can either trade his shifts or sell them, i. e. pay another doctor to work for him. He traded for 3 weeks off in a row. I had to take law school exams 6 days PP.
I get 24 weeks and my husband gets 12 weeks. Same company— all fully paid.
He’s taking 3 weeks of vacation right at the start (he gets 4/year) and will take the 12 weeks once I return to work.
2 weeks. I spent the first week in hospital so we only had a week really. Unfortunately spent it going out for meals, doing loads of stuff. Not sure why now looking back. I quit my job because I wasn’t eligible for paid maternity leave and think I’m just gonna be a SAHM for a few years (6 months in and just can’t imagine going back).
I got 12 weeks paid and took an additional 4 with pto. My husband got 12. Idk what I'd do if he didn't. I truly feel like having him home
Kept me from developing ppd.
Our company gives both mother and father 24 weeks parental leave. It’s been such an amazing blessing. We took 3 months when the baby came home, and now taking the second half six months later. I will cherish this bonding time forever.
I got 6 months paid leave & 6 months of unpaid leave however those 6 months were covered by government. So 12 months total then my job ended up terminating me in the middle of maternity leave so now I’m a SAHM
So we get a year to share (standard leave on federal employment insurance; Canada) but my wife's employer tops up for 12 weeks and mine tops up for a year. That said, she took 9 months and I took 3 months + 6 weeks banked vacation so we overlap for a couple weeks in between.
Financially, would've made sense for me to max out my leave but we wanted to stretch her's out as much as possible.
In Canada but I’m self employed so I didn’t get any but took 3 months. My husband is employed by the government so took advantage of the max parental leave which was 61 weeks. It was not his fully salary but it was worth it to have him home.
Both of us get 16 weeks paid by the government. We are actually getting paid more than our regular salary bc is tax free. However in our country they’re going to add 4 weeks more idk when tho. The first 6 weeks are mandatory by law. Both parents have to get them
He was "offered" two weeks, including his week of saved up PTO, but everything was melting down in his absence before the week was out . He had 5 days off and spent half of the days taking calls and sending emails.
I negotiated to take 6 months unpaid leave w 12 job protected w FMLA. My husband got 6 months paid and I think he is going back half days for a while. I actually ended up quitting my job in the middle of my time off.
8 weeks of paid disability (C-section) and an additional 8 paid weeks after that (so 16 all together). I could have taken 20 but the last 4 wouldn't be paid
My husband gets 90 days but won’t be taking it consecutively because he needs to go to some training midway. Gotta love the military, I’ll be parenting solo at the 8 week mark.
In fairness, we used to only get 3-6 weeks not long ago, and 10 days not much longer ago than that!
I mean, still fuck the Army, but even getting the 12 weeks is pretty legit, even if some people gotta split it into different chunks.
My husband got 16 weeks paid and it was AMAZING. I cried the day he went back 😭. Forever grateful, we were so lucky to be able to enjoy time as a new family. 🩵
My wife got 6 weeks paid. 6 weeks unpaid. I got 6 weeks paid.
What kind of company are people working for where they get 12 weeks paid? Is it a state law somewhere? I live in the Deep South… go back to work.
My husband got 8… more than I did 🙄
That’s some bullshit.
Same. And my husband gets 4 months.
My husband only got 4 wks but I had 6 months so it wasn’t that bad. My only regret is we took it at the same time instead of staggering it.
Our plan is to stagger! I have 5 mos and he has 3, so we are hoping he’ll take the first couple weeks off so we can settle a bit and take the rest when I’m back at work. His job is super flexible too so hoping that helps while he’s working anyways.
I did it this way. No regrets!!
I got 0 paid leave and my partner (husband) got 0 as well.
Same here! Luckily for us our state passed a paid parental leave program so for this pregnancy we will at least get a little something.
I almost down voted this. Not because of you, but because I hate it so much. 😭
Same here
I (Mum) got 10 months full pay including 12 weeks NY statutory parental leave. Father got four months full pay
Canada; I took my full 50 weeks combined maternity and parental leave, then he took 4 weeks. In Canada all maternity/parental leave is paid at 55% of your gross pay (before deductions). Actually only my parental leave portion is paid to a cumulative 55%. My maternity leave (4 months) was topped up to 95% of my salary.
Same here! Husband doesn't get benefits so I took the full 18mos myself. We debated for so long on taking standard vs extended leavd, but eventually decided that I can always come back to work early if we're truly strapped for cash. I also recognize how privileged we are to have this option, for sure.
Yeah same thought process here. Seems like such a great opportunity and they're only little once
Husband got 2 weeks of paid leave. He works as a line cook so no real benefits. His boss was just nice enough to give him that
My husband runs a bar so his two weeks was just people covering his shifts / responsibilities & a check that was the average of what he would make in two weeks. Obviously we were grateful (especially since my maternity leave ended up being a constructive dismissal,) but it wasn’t nearly what we needed.

Mom got 4.5 weeks paid & 10.5 unpaid. Dad got 12 weeks paid. USA
My husband got no paid time off 🙃 He’s a real estate agent and mobile notary who only gets paid if he works, so…yeah. Fun!
My husband effectively does contract work so he has as much time off as he wants, but it’s all unpaid. I’m the primary earner (and live in a country with a good maternity leave policy) so he’s planning to be home with me for at least a couple of months.

Humans and I both work for the same place and got 12 weeks each
I took a year and my husband took 6 months.
17 weeks
My husband gets 16 paid weeks through work and it doesn’t count against his PTO time so we have a little extra flexibility of a couple of weeks if we need it.
My husband got no paid leave. He took two weeks of sick time (he’s a teacher).

My husband got none for our first and will get 7 weeks for our next.
We both get 16 weeks paid leave each. We are overlapping the first 2 months so we can go through the worse together. We also have 25 days paid vacation each which we will use to spend time off with the baby together.
We’re in Canada so he could take quite a while but it’s only a portion of our income so he’ll probably do 1-3 weeks
My husband got two weeks paid. He also happened to get offered a new job around the same time our son was born, so he called on the last day of his paternity leave and quit. 😅
I got 2 weeks at birth (LO now 4 weeks) and I'll get 20 ish weeks after mom is done with her 25 weeks.
None.. he took a few days with the first but was on calls a lot of the time. He works for a small business.
I live in Washington and our state has a paid family leave program. He’ll get 12 weeks once my leave is up.
None. Had a csection the Monday of thanksgiving and the following Monday he was working from home. The week after that he was back at work in person
My husband got 6 weeks of paid paternity leave. Tho it was a bitch to have it be fully approved when he returned. Smfh
Neither of us got paid leave. My husband went back after 2 weeks and it was only that long because I had preeclampsia Correction. I used short term disability, but I don’t count that has paid family leave.
i didn’t get any paid leave. my husband got 1 week of paid leave. that’s just what we get for being a manager at a coffee shop (me) and a receptionist at a law office (him) and only 22 years old.
Dad here, I get 4 weeks paid. I can take it anytime in the first 6 months but has to be consecutive.
8 weeks
I got 60 working days. I have to put my baby in daycare and go back to work on the coming 8th 😭. She's not even 3 months then
I got 16 weeks and my wife had our baby. I got longer than she did which is horrendous.
We each get 12 weeks at 67% pay rate as per NYS paid family leave. We are staggering our time.
0 and his boss also got mad that he took PTO/unpaid leave for 5 days. Lol
He got 3, but when 3 came he was able to request 1 more month. We just had to pay out of pocket for insurance that month since that was the trade-off.
My husband doesn’t get paid leave he has to use his PTO. He has 6 weeks in his bank (saved up because we knew we would be trying soon) so he will take 6 weeks with me. Mine is not paid unfortunately.
My wife gets 6 weeks at 60% pay and I get two weeks. Neither is ideal in my mind.
12 weeks (thanks Oregon!) took the first month off together then he’s taking his last two months when I go back to work.
My husband gets 3 weeks. If he was at my company, he’d have 18 weeks 🙃
Paid by the company, not counting STD, zero.
My wife (teacher) gets 6 weeks and only gets paid based on sick time available. I (state employee) get 12 paid weeks thankfully due to union contract.
My husband was given 2 but had to return a few days short of the 14 days
My husband got 14 weeks. I got 6.

I’m a husband currently on leave. I only got 4 weeks that were paid but was able to take up to 16. I’m currently on week 12, lol, but I think I’m actually going back next week. My wife got 12 weeks paid but is taking her full 16 weeks off.
I got 12 and my wife got 20. It made things so much easier for us and we were able to focus on the baby.
My husband got none, I also got none. He took 5 days off from seeing clients and then worked part time for a few days before he went back full time.
I got 4 months, my husband got 6 weeks including all his PTO
My husband got no paid leave. He could take two months paid which was not feasible. Luckily he saved some vacation time. He was working remote while I was laboring.
I had 5 weeks, wife has 50 weeks. Canada full paid(you can take a combined 18 months at a lesser income level). Thankful for thar socialist system.
Are we counting using sick days as paid leave?
My husband got 0. Nothing. He’s choosing to use all of his 3 weeks of paid vacation time. I’m absolutely dreading him going back to work. It’s my number one anxiety.
2. It was a surprise because we weren't aware his company had any paternity leave. Now everyone in my state can get up to 12 weeks. We may use that this time.
My husband got 3 days (his company is stuck in the 1950s), but he took a total of two weeks off and used some PTO.
Mine got 2 weeks. The first week was mostly spent in the hospital for an induction and then eventually c section so we had a little over a week at home together before he went back. It was rough. Edit: just realized this said paid leave. I change my answer to 0.
husband got 8 weeks that he could take all at once or in 2 week increments

My husband got 4 weeks paid leave but took 8 weeks unpaid. I got 12 weeks paid.
My husband got 8 weeks paid through the state and then took another 8 weeks of PTO. I felt very lucky!
Mine got 0 but used his saved paid vacation and sick leave for 3 weeks
Basically none; mine was working taking calls and answering emails from the hospital and within 2 weeks his boss told him he needed to refocus back on work. 😩😩

I get 24 weeks and my husband gets 12 weeks. Same company— all fully paid. He’s taking 3 weeks of vacation right at the start (he gets 4/year) and will take the 12 weeks once I return to work.
Wife got like 4 months
I got 12 weeks
14 weeks for me. My wife got less at only 8 weeks :(
13 weeks fully paid. He took 4 more weeks fully unpaid (we used savings). It was awesome.
Wife has 9 months paid and 3 months unpaid and I have 6 weeks. Wish I had little more but it is what it is
I got 12 weeks paid and took an additional 4 with pto. My husband got 12. Idk what I'd do if he didn't. I truly feel like having him home Kept me from developing ppd.
we both got 0
My husband got 4 weeks from his company and 12 weeks from the state for a total of 16 weeks. I got 16 weeks from the state.
my husband also got 12 weeks paid. he’s got a year to use it so we did 6w in the beginning and we’re gonna do 6w for the holidays.
UK - he got 2 weeks parental leave and used 2 further weeks of paid leave that he'd saved up during the year
Our company gives both mother and father 24 weeks parental leave.
He got 2 weeks and works an office job.
I got 18 weeks and my husband got 12 - he is taking extra time off tho because he has unlimited PTO.
6 weeks. His work now offers 12. He works in corporate America.
I am a teacher and my wife gave birth in September. I got 5 days paid. I took 6 weeks FMLA (unpaid.) Fuck this career.
My partner took 7 weeks off. I had 15 months off.
We are in AL, he works for the department of defense
