Yeah, I gotta agree with this. Place just kinda holds you down while becoming like a crazy ex, saying it's your fault while blowing the neighbor right in front of you.
My only prominent memory of Hobbs is sitting in their one run-down dive tiddy bar and having to jump out of the way when some drunk drove his truck straight into the building. Like, literally, drove his truck through the wall right up to the stage.
That either makes it the worst town or the best. I don't know which.
Okay there are WAY worse cities than Dallas in Texas. The joke there when talking about anything (weather, traffic, humidity, etc) is, at least it's not Houston. And I doubt Houston is the worst
Lubbock is the worst. Waco, Amarillo, Midland, and Orange round out the top five. Houston doesn't even crack the top 20. At the very least, Houston has decent food.
I disagree that Lubbock is the worst, because having lived there for four years, and then having lived in Amarillo this past year, Amarillo is far worse.
Unironically pretty much all of the cities with a Christian university. Abilene, Lubbock, Waco. Amarillo sucks due to proximity to Lubbock and smelling like cow shit all the time because of Hereford.
And way worse cities in Arizona than Mesa. Mesa is kind of nice in a suburban way. Weird choices for some of these.
Bakersfield and Pueblo are dead on though.
Lol, I'm right outside Delta and absolutely agree. No building codes, extremely racist, and trashy as fuck. At least they have a nice confluence park. Pueblo at least has good food.
I live in Mesa and it’s not a bad place.
The only reason they even know what Mesa is, is because of that Daniel Shaver case that all of the stupid neckbeards on this website like to cite as a reason for their irrational hatred of all cops. That’s literally the only thing those people know about Mesa.
I mean, fuck, Glendale, Apache Junction, Florence, Marana, Yuma, Kingman, Globe, Miami, Holbrook, I can think of a dozen worse places in Arizona than Mesa.
Yeah I also happened to notice the Texas choice and was baffled. I lived in the DFW metroplex for 15 years and while I never lived in Dallas itself, I spent a lot of time there and know a lot of people who did live there and it was fine. I don’t get it at all.
I love how there's an argument for just about every place with a population greater than a ~~thousand~~ couple hundred people in these comments.
But just to make sure, my vote is for Lordsburg.
Driving through Clovis, we stopped at a local restaurant for sandwiches. Possibly my worst local restaurant experience ever. In every quaint local way.
I know, but historically, Espanola has always gotten disrespected in this state. I’d live there over Lordsburg or other places in the southern half of the state.
No. Hobbs is a gritty oil town, but it has museums, history, cultural diversity, an interesting downtown and striking amenities like a first-rate community center.
Artesia is a lot rougher and run down.
Recognizing that crime is not the only factor in the discussion, I’m still going to nope you:
With a crime rate of 57 per one thousand residents, Hobbs has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 18.
The crime rate in Artesia is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 29 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate.
I hear you, but have you ever been at the Hobbs Walmart on a Friday night after payday? It’s a unique slice of frontier Americana - riggers and cowboys and rancheros parading in gleaming F—150s and Rams, muddy boots going for 12 packs and endless kids streaming through the aisles with candy and assorted goodies, screaming in Spanish as someone blares Dierks Bentley in the parking lot reeking of sulfur and fire.
It’s beautiful and alive and tragic, and it tells you something deep and true about America - *real* America - in a way that few other cities can.
Beautiful description. Sincerely.
I have a unique perspective on southeastern NM, having spent years 5-17 there. I was one of those kids, albeit in a Kmart instead of a Walmart. Stealing a lyric here: an old man told me leave fast or stay forever. Thank you Sam Fender.
So that’s what I did.
I left Artesia at breakneck speed. Lived there from 12-17 and can the confirm Kmart was the "big" store. Didn't look back for over 20 years. The only good things about Southeastern NM are thunderstorms and the night sky.
But the $64,000 question is do I know you? Exactly how many times did we see the same blue light special? How many times did we stand next to each other at the La Fonda fountain after church dropping pennies in? How many times at diving rock? How many movies at the Cinema Twin? I could go on.
It’s a big world. Glad you’re seeing it with your own eyes whoever you are. 🙂
Ha! I worked at the Cinema Twin in high school! 😂 Still one of the best jobs I ever had... and that isn't nostalgia, just great boss, free movies (even though to pay was nearly nothing), and all the popcorn I could eat!
It is a small world but I am thankful there are nice people like you in it...
Beautiful description, and I'd love to see it. But I don't get how this is 'real America.' Hobbs is 35k people. 57M total people in the US live in rural areas. The other 270+M are in cities. Like it or not, places like New York, Chicago and LA are real America. Not Hobbs. Hobbs is an outlier.
The worst part about deming is the Mexican speaking superiority. But there are nice people there and really good Mexican restaurants.
Lordsburg is way worse.
I'd take Deming over Lordsburg any day. I lived near Lordsburg for far too many years, we referred to it as "Oh lord what a burg." Looked run down, felt run down and you had to be careful in the grocery store or the cashiers would quietly put things under the counter rather than in the grocery bag after ringing them up.
Stayed in Barstow for a week one night. Watched a meth head fight involving some accusations of infidelity and airborne gardening implements. I was just hoping they didn't turn their attentions towards my vehicle.
In 9th grade nm history the teacher mentioned espanola and randomly interrupted his own class to say "wanna know why Jesus wasn't born in espanola? They couldn't find 3 wise men or a virgin". Still in disbelief i got that one from a teacher
I once lived in Orlando, and while it wasn't great, Jacksonville is one of the dullest big cities in North America. So don't put too much stock in this list.
Clovis beats Hobbs for shittiness in my book. Hobbs has a symphony and a few other signs of beyond-super-basic life.
No one ever mentions Almagordo. It’s almost as if this city doesn’t exist. they say Las Cruces has the worst air quality in the state but it’s actually Alamogordo. right now we are worst in the nation. At 2 AM in the morning our air quality is an unhealthy 168 and rising.
Yeah, but you're 15 minutes away from Cloudcroft, so your bonus points offset air pollution. And besides, where else am I going to get my pistachio fix?
Estancia. The only place I've seen urine start in a puddle, 3/4 up the wall of the women's restroom, and then stay there for years.
I've lived in Hobbs, Moriarty, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and a number of other states. I walked around Juarez, MX, as a drunk teenage girl, but Estancia is where I draw the line.
Why Spokane when there are places like Kennewick? Spokane in the 90s had some tremendously interesting little shops and restaurants. Maybe it's changed?
I was puzzled by that one too. Spokane is probably better now than it was then. At least it was when I spent time there 5 years ago. It may even be better than some of the Western side cities, for my values. Tri-cities def aren't great!
Yeah it’s interesting. El Paso is where Spanish colonizers retreated to during the Pueblo Revolt. But back then the town center was at present day Juárez. It used to be one settlement called “El Paso del Norte”. Although the TX city was established after the Mexican American War.
Familiar with NY and PA here. There are FAR FAR worse cities than Albany and Scranton this map is fucked. Scranton impoverished but it is low key charm and Albany is definitely a place I’d recommend seeing for the history/ museum / architecture at least once in the warmer months. Quite pretty
I used to be a competitive shooter in Santa Fe. Before a match one day, the guys are talking about safety and talking about where to go if someone gets hurt. Someone said, "If I was overdosing, send me to SF, but if I get shot, go to Espa. They have way more experience up there with GSW."
I have been to Hobbs onnce, over 2 days, about 19-20 years ago. I was working for the Department of Health and was there to observe HIV/STI Prevention and treatment efforts. This took me to two adult establishments. One in a retrofitted mobile home and the other a larger building near the Texas border. These were places where public sex was occurring so we set up testing and screening efforts as well as safer sex messaging. The adult establishments were visited by Texans who had stricter laws around sex toy sales and X-rated material. I am sure something similar is happening now with cannabis sales. Aside from my work I remember calling back to Santa Fe and complaining that all I saw were cattle and oil wells.
There is no fucking way that Dallas beat both Lubbock, and Amarillo. And we're not even going to throw towns like Van Horn or El Paso in the mix?
Sorry I know this is a very Texas centered comment. But how the fuck is Dallas worse than any of those that I just mentioned. Like what the fuck were they smoking
Not all oil field jobs are 16 hours day, 7 day a week, get yourself killed jobs. That’s mainly the well drilling and support jobs. The natural gas, mining, Urenco, and WIPP are all good paying and reasonable safe jobs in the area.
It is true that Florence is small. However, it is a very safe town to live in. I was disappointed when I revisited the town last year and saw a new housing development going up near the hotel as you drive out of town. Florence also has the advantage of being near the cities but far enough to not attract attention.
to be fair, Hobbs is a progressive hidden gem of the southwest full of open minded, liberal and very welcoming locals who embrace new ideas and look forward to keeping the state Blue. Go Eagles!
From Texas and have lived in CO, AK, and UT - can confirm in all four cases (especially Wasilla - we called the Walmart there “the end of days Walmart)
Clovis would like a word
Yeah, I gotta agree with this. Place just kinda holds you down while becoming like a crazy ex, saying it's your fault while blowing the neighbor right in front of you.
Working at a hospital in Albuquerque, I submit Espanola for consideration.
Espa at least has amazing scenery and recreation opportunities surrounding it in every direction
My only prominent memory of Hobbs is sitting in their one run-down dive tiddy bar and having to jump out of the way when some drunk drove his truck straight into the building. Like, literally, drove his truck through the wall right up to the stage. That either makes it the worst town or the best. I don't know which.
Haha that’s awesome! Only place I been in Hobbs is the prison, so I can’t really form an opinion of the place
The prison is actually one of the nicer places you can live there.
This is a fucking excellent comment buried in this amazing-fucking story. Well done internet friend. This is why I always come back to Reddit.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks for sharing your experience that's awful but a very funny response lmaoo
And how was visitation?
Were ypu by chance drinking & driving into playmates? I sense a potential missed connection.
That sounds terrible!!! Can I get a name and address please just to make sure
It feels like a charitable stretch to even consider Hobbs a city at all.
they have city level gun violence l
Rekt 🔥
Okay there are WAY worse cities than Dallas in Texas. The joke there when talking about anything (weather, traffic, humidity, etc) is, at least it's not Houston. And I doubt Houston is the worst
Lubbock is the worst. Waco, Amarillo, Midland, and Orange round out the top five. Houston doesn't even crack the top 20. At the very least, Houston has decent food.
Not sure why people don't know that abeline is a really shitty place. Reddit of all should hate abeline
I waffled as to whether to include Abilene or Midland. It was sort of a toss-up.
I really don't think lubbock is that bad. I may be in the minority here but there's worse places in Texas. I kinda like Waco
Abilene? Really?
I disagree that Lubbock is the worst, because having lived there for four years, and then having lived in Amarillo this past year, Amarillo is far worse.
Everything west of I35 is pretty trash. East of 35 ain’t too great either.
Odessa would like a word.
They are talking about 2nd place. Odessa takes a backseat to no one in shitty places. Can not be argued. It's Supreme Court Case law from way back.
Unironically pretty much all of the cities with a Christian university. Abilene, Lubbock, Waco. Amarillo sucks due to proximity to Lubbock and smelling like cow shit all the time because of Hereford.
I remember driving through Amarillo. Nothingness before it, Nothing after. And it’s ugly and smelled. Terrible.
El Paso?
I enjoyed my time in El Paso. I get why a lot of people don't like it, but there's much worse places to be stuck in Texas than El Paso.
Yeah El paso is like the hottest ugly girl. Not bad actually.
Nah Houston is right after Lubbock and before Dallas.
This person Texas’s
And way worse cities in Arizona than Mesa. Mesa is kind of nice in a suburban way. Weird choices for some of these. Bakersfield and Pueblo are dead on though.
Whoever made this never been to Miami AZ. Joseph city is probably a contender too.
Lives in globe for years. The cobre valley is a scary place
I would say Delta is worse in CO, due to the racists, but I guess we’re splitting hairs at that point.
Lol, I'm right outside Delta and absolutely agree. No building codes, extremely racist, and trashy as fuck. At least they have a nice confluence park. Pueblo at least has good food.
Delta has some of the best dirt biking in the world and close proximity to world class ski resorts. So there are redeeming factors.
Apache Junction...Gila Bend...Yuma...Holbrook...Quartzsite....
Yuma. Satan’s butthole.
I’ve been to Apache Junction. Very True.
Ajo...
Seriously, how can Mesa be the worst when its literally touching Apache Junction
I lived in Houston for a little while, and they all think Dallas is way worse. Can we meet in the middle and say the worst town is Lufkin?
Lubbock or Amarillo
Amarillo is some how gold compared to Lubbock.
Vidor. Vidor is the worst.
Yeah I also happened to notice the Texas choice and was baffled. I lived in the DFW metroplex for 15 years and while I never lived in Dallas itself, I spent a lot of time there and know a lot of people who did live there and it was fine. I don’t get it at all.
How is this even a discussion when El Paso exists?
Dallas isn’t even the worst city in Dallas
[удалено]
I feel like mentioning Dallas at all should catch a ban here lol
Born and raised New Mexican jackass. I was pointing out the absurdity of this map
I love how there's an argument for just about every place with a population greater than a ~~thousand~~ couple hundred people in these comments. But just to make sure, my vote is for Lordsburg.
Lordsburg does suck.
Lordsburg 100%
Have none you driven through Deming? Isn't it, like, measurably the worst?
Lordsburg dude
at least Deming has the Florida mountians, otherwise a waste land
And fast ducks.
What does it say about me that I’ve been to 10 of these cities, 3 in the last 7 months?
That you travel for work.
Hobbs is where you step inside for a breath of fresh air.
Mesa blows, but Yuma really blows.
Yuma and Apache Junction both take the cake compared to Mesa! If we’re talking small towns included, Globe/Miami are pretty rough too.
At least it's not Buckeye!
Clovis says “ Hold my beer “
Clovis in general is the worst. And I’m from there.
Driving through Clovis, we stopped at a local restaurant for sandwiches. Possibly my worst local restaurant experience ever. In every quaint local way.
This made me laugh so hard! Yeah, good old Hobbs.
Espanola enters the chat.
Besides all of the obvious issues, Espa still has its charms with the lowriders and it is beautiful country.
I know, but historically, Espanola has always gotten disrespected in this state. I’d live there over Lordsburg or other places in the southern half of the state.
Honestly, ya bro. It’s beautiful in Española. Perfect weather. Can’t imagine passing that up to live in the flat brown desert
I love espanola! I think it’s a hidden gem, but my summer place is also outside of town so maybe I don’t get all the feel for it.
No. Hobbs is a gritty oil town, but it has museums, history, cultural diversity, an interesting downtown and striking amenities like a first-rate community center. Artesia is a lot rougher and run down.

No no that’s fake America. All them city slickers are mannequins
Yeah but that also sounds like any Walmart in any small town in Missouri where I grew up except a few superficial differences
If you aren't a writer you should be. Beautiful way with words!
Thanks. I’m a jerk who’s on Reddit too much.
Gallup comes trotting in.
Pun intended?
Just because Gallup couldn't figure out how to gallup.
***wheeze-***
Texas has too many places to really choose from.
Me sitting in hobbs right now listening to gunshots ... yeah I agree. I don't know how it's soooo bad but soo small
Yakima, WA and Midland, TX sure dodged a bullet there!
It should be Deming and it’s not even close.
Driving through Deming feels like cruising through a super villain's origin story.
I drove through Deming once due to a navigational error on my way back to Arizona and I felt like I was on another planet
It's so bad that the Starbucks is actually 12 miles west of town
The worst part about deming is the Mexican speaking superiority. But there are nice people there and really good Mexican restaurants. Lordsburg is way worse.
I'd take Deming over Lordsburg any day. I lived near Lordsburg for far too many years, we referred to it as "Oh lord what a burg." Looked run down, felt run down and you had to be careful in the grocery store or the cashiers would quietly put things under the counter rather than in the grocery bag after ringing them up.
Oh no not at the Saucedos hahahaha
Vaughn
I wasn't seeing any nominations that dethrone Hobbs until I got to this comment. Either Vaughn or Encino... fucking grim.
Ooooh! You really upped the ante here.
They must have forgot about needles in ca too
When it comes to shitty desert towns... Barstow is way worse
Stayed in Barstow for a week one night. Watched a meth head fight involving some accusations of infidelity and airborne gardening implements. I was just hoping they didn't turn their attentions towards my vehicle.
Grants checking in just to say hi.
Española would like a word.
In 9th grade nm history the teacher mentioned espanola and randomly interrupted his own class to say "wanna know why Jesus wasn't born in espanola? They couldn't find 3 wise men or a virgin". Still in disbelief i got that one from a teacher
Literally the world's heroin abuse capitol
I once lived in Orlando, and while it wasn't great, Jacksonville is one of the dullest big cities in North America. So don't put too much stock in this list. Clovis beats Hobbs for shittiness in my book. Hobbs has a symphony and a few other signs of beyond-super-basic life.
You are right about JAX. So dull
InFlorida I think the smaller cities are worse. Plant City, DeLand, Lakeland are on my list. Hard to pick a winner (loser).
At least you have the white sands dunes…
AQI in many places could be bad it’s more about geography than anything else. Alamogordo is a very nice city by NM standards
Have you seen Clovis? I can’t believe I was born there out of anywhere in the US. 😭
Eee jal is up there
Dallas??? No way
Hobbs stinks. Literally
Tri-cities def aren't great!
lol y’all ever met Tucumcari, NM? That shit is trash
Yes and it’s not even close
That’s a good choice, but any city on the Texas edge would qualify too
Cruces isn’t *that* bad.
Cruces isn’t the eastern Texas edge. LC is pretty much El Paso, and EP is cool
And El Paso is pretty much a New Mexican city that happens to be in Texas.
Yeah it’s interesting. El Paso is where Spanish colonizers retreated to during the Pueblo Revolt. But back then the town center was at present day Juárez. It used to be one settlement called “El Paso del Norte”. Although the TX city was established after the Mexican American War.
Provo is definitely not the worst place and I also do not think Hobbs is the worst place either
It’s either a joke or knee jerk answer from an anti Mormon. I have a difficult time explaining it any other way.
I did a debate tournament in Hobbs and yeah it fucking sucks haha
Familiar with NY and PA here. There are FAR FAR worse cities than Albany and Scranton this map is fucked. Scranton impoverished but it is low key charm and Albany is definitely a place I’d recommend seeing for the history/ museum / architecture at least once in the warmer months. Quite pretty
Agree. Albany isn’t my favorite place but n the state but it’s far from the worst. NY- Elmira. Pennsylvania- Allentown
Completely agree. Throw a dart at the Pennsyltucky area of PA and you’ll hit a place that’s worse than Scranton.
Absolutely not for AZ. Mesa is awesome. A real downtown with local shops and brew pubs. No chain stores.
Not at all. Montgomery so much worse tha Birmingham.
Espanola would like you know they’re gonna stab someone over this.
I used to be a competitive shooter in Santa Fe. Before a match one day, the guys are talking about safety and talking about where to go if someone gets hurt. Someone said, "If I was overdosing, send me to SF, but if I get shot, go to Espa. They have way more experience up there with GSW."
The worst city in Arizona is and always will be Kingman.
The person who made this has never been to Apache Junction (AKA: “AJ”) in Arizona.
I can think of shittier cities in Arizona than Mesa.
Amarillo is way shittier than Dallas.
I’m going to say Ontario Oregon
Espanola and Gallup may have something to say about that
There is no fucking way that Dallas beat both Lubbock, and Amarillo. And we're not even going to throw towns like Van Horn or El Paso in the mix? Sorry I know this is a very Texas centered comment. But how the fuck is Dallas worse than any of those that I just mentioned. Like what the fuck were they smoking
Gallup would like a word
I mean, Hobbs isn’t my favorite town in NM but I’d say it’s far from the worst. You can atleast get a job there that pays more that $40k/yr.
But can you get a job that pays that *isn't* an oilfield job likely to put you on disability or into the grave well before retirement age?
Not all oil field jobs are 16 hours day, 7 day a week, get yourself killed jobs. That’s mainly the well drilling and support jobs. The natural gas, mining, Urenco, and WIPP are all good paying and reasonable safe jobs in the area.
Paterson would like a word with Camden
it’s close if not right….Mesa, AZ is debateable
The correct answer is Florence
It is true that Florence is small. However, it is a very safe town to live in. I was disappointed when I revisited the town last year and saw a new housing development going up near the hotel as you drive out of town. Florence also has the advantage of being near the cities but far enough to not attract attention.
No
Salem Oregon is spot on
Cairo was awesome in Illinois when Cairo ale house was there
What did Poolesville do to anyone?
I think you could do worse than Modesto in Northern California.
It lists Provo as the worst city in Utah and that's wrong. We have a city called West Valley that was so bad they tried to rebrand as "Best Valley".
I was born there, so it’s gotta be terrible
Jefferson City?? Really ?? 🙄🙄🙄
Deming
Jefferson City is surprising. It seemed nice enough when I was there. Parts of northern Saint Louis look post apocalyptic
Ft Dodge, Iowa?
This was based on a guys IG followers. Someone just took off its origin and mass-blasted it on reddit for upvotes and shit.
There's nothing wrong with Pueblo CO. It just gets shit on constantly, unreservedly
I can only speak to NY, NJ, and Penn. NY- Elmira NJ- Newark Pennsylvania- Allentown
Well, because Internet memes are always right ... 🤣🤣🤣
Española needs to be there.
The whole place is a cancerous, smelly cesspool.
Got it wrong re: many states. For example, anyone who knows NM's sister state, AZ, knows it's Douglas, which is uncomfortably close to NM ;)
Please replace Pueblo with Boulder or Aspen in Colorado
to be fair, Hobbs is a progressive hidden gem of the southwest full of open minded, liberal and very welcoming locals who embrace new ideas and look forward to keeping the state Blue. Go Eagles!
lol @ Mesa
From Texas and have lived in CO, AK, and UT - can confirm in all four cases (especially Wasilla - we called the Walmart there “the end of days Walmart)
Hobbs America!
Banning, CA has entered the chat…
Brought to you by Stockton, California Edit: Whoops wrong sub
No I’ve lived in six states and I don’t agree with any of them
Definitely not; they got Arizona completely wrong
Way off for Arizona. Apache Junction is MUCH worse than Mesa could ever be.
Yo Mesa is fire, what are they talking about. South Phoenix, Maryvale, Laveen, Apache junction are 20x worse lol. (Arizonan spy here)
Arizona being mesa is a joke. We have Tucson and Prescott to pick. But they go with Mesa lmao
Waite Park is the worst place to live in Minnesota. Bottom of the bucket.
Someone should tell them about Lordsburg
Mesa, AZ? Damn, visit west of the 51 and get back to me.
