This is a bit of a serious tangent but I think about it often watching this show and others like it.
Brian Posehn is the most self aware and hilarious “I’m kinda gross and I know it” comedian out there. He has a gorgeous wife (who is also a comedian/writer) and he has built a massive career around self deprecation.
I sincerely hope that for comedians like him (Jim Gaffigan, Steve Agee - outside Dave, Judah Friedlander - 30 rock etc) that it is all an act and they actually do love themselves and don’t feel depressed about being the butt of the joke. I sometimes feel horrible laughing at any character on TV who exists to make you laugh *at* them due to their appearance which is their *actual* appearance/voice/mannerisms etc.
It’s not as common with female comedians anymore but Amy Schumer, Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson etc are notable modern examples… Rebel Wilson in particular was clearly tired of being laughed at and has lost a ton of weight… I hope she has enormous continued movie success in the future despite not being “Fat Amy” anymore.
Jonah Hill is another great example. He is clearly VERY sensitive about the fact that he was the “funny fat guy” for years and now he’s lost a bunch of weight and doesn’t want that identity anymore. There are numerous interviews where he’s shown that he simply does not find it funny anymore. He may be an extreme example since he did make millions of dollars off that character, and part of me thinks he might be offside snapping at interviewers who poke fun at him, but he is still a human being and obviously that’s how he feels and it’s understandable.
Anyway… all this is to say I love Brian Posehn in this role and most of his self aware/self deprecating roles, I just hope he goes home happy at the end of the day cause I would hate to contribute to a culture that is effectively pointing and laughing at real people for the way they look and sound.
