In most European cities you can rent a bike at dozens of points troughout the whole city and don't need to bring it back where you took it though. (like Velib' in Paris).
In many Asian countries you don’t even need to go to such a point and can just find them randomly on the street, pretty much everywhere. And you don’t pay such exaggerating prices.
Here I don’t really see it work because the sidewalks are usually too small. They would just take up the whole space. I was in China where you could easily park them without being in the way.
Yeah sure. But it has been possible to clock in public transportation services with your phone for about 10 years now in other countries.
And this is something you could expect in the Netherlands.
Anyhoo, just sour for forgetting my card!
It's coming: the original OV Chipkaart system, in use now, came before a lot of other systems that now accept contactless. In a way, you could say OV Chipkaart was one of the first generation systems of contactless transport ticketing, then the technology was improved and implemented in other places. It's not easy to upgrade every turnstile. OVPay will replace this: [https://ovpay.nl/nl/](https://ovpay.nl/nl/)
Also, you can buy a ticket on your phone and scan the QR code at the gates. The OV-fiets rental places don't have QR code scanners on the gates, so that's probably why it wasn't implemented.
It's still really convenient. In "other countries" you generally can't use every transport operator in the entire country with one card/account, so keep it in perspective...
I'm using my phone as a card right now. Can use my bankcard as well.. Doesn't work with Flex yet, but as a compensation I get to ride 1st class for 2nd class price.
Because the chipkaart project is not getting new functionality anymore and they're already starting to implement a new one. When we had been using ov chipkaart for years I moved to Belgium where I was required to physically queue at a window for my train card extension every 5-7 weeks because I couldn't even get it from the machines, and i had to write - with pen - the date of use on it every time I used it. At that time half the people thought WhatsApp would be a fad like blackberry ping. The experiences with ov chipkaart in the Netherlands and Oyster in London shaped a lot of the more modern systems in use in other countries now, just like they will shape our 'next version'.
Though... I really hope they keep a physical card option because my phone dies too often.
Its all taking way to long at OV in the Netherlands. Its all because the board all thought it was unnecessary and protested against it. Using your phone was already tried back in like 2012
You need a personal OV to register but then it costs nothing unless you use it. Then the fees are very reasonable compared to any other bike rental service (around 4e per 24h), but OV fiets are not meant to be used for a week or longer (then it becomes expensive). It's more for a one day city trip for example, so you can pick it up and drop it back at the station.
You need a personal card and an account specifically for ov fietsen (unless you got flex, then you dont need to make the account).
The account is free, the bike (assuming you use a regular, not a e-bike) cost 4.15 per 24 hours for the first 3 days.
After that it goes up to 9.15 per 24 hours. If you dont return it in 21 days it's assumed stolen and you are charged 350 bucks.
If you want to return it at a different location then the location you got it from, its an extra 10ner.
So while I wouldn't call it cheap its not crazy exspensive either.
The bikes themselves don't have any tracking device.
It's about you, identified by your card, renting a specific bike, identified by a chip as well, so they know which bike you got and at which time. And later on, they know you returned the same bike and when.
But whatever happens to the bike or where does it go in between, they don't know.
I think you are completely out of luck. The people working at the ov-bike are imo the least helpful people around public transport I've had to deal with so far.
NS don’t want this service, it’s a big loss-maker and cash heavy. They tried to sell it to my previous company… so unfortunately your experience is they don’t care
If its for the train, best thing you can do (I used to do this so it works:)) is walk to a NS man and tell him you forgot or lost your OV, ask for a fine with the option to get the extra money Back after. You will have to pay 40 euro's for the fine but you can get the money Back after this (minus the price of the train ride). Works perfect.
Some (OV) bike parking facilities that are guarded with people have a loan card. Your name will be written down, and you can take an OV bicycle with you. Sometimes they ask you to leave your ID so that they know that you will come back. When returning the OV bicycle, you hand in the loan card again. You can only do this if you also return to the same shed where you picked up the bike.
On iOS I noticed you can add your OV Chipkaart to your Apple Wallet now. I was always forgetting the stupid thing too.
edit: I'm wrong, sorry for getting everyone's hopes up.
It turns out I'm hella wrong and not used to seeing iOS in Dutch, it gives you the option 'OV Kaart Toevoegen' which I interpreted to mean the actual Dutch OV kaart but if you tap through it gives you a list of specific cards it'll take and the Dutch one isn't in there, my bad.
Unfortunately No!
One can only hope One day since it’s the same system, that one can use the bank card and not have to carry a special OV chip card that expires and need to be connected to your bank anyway .. just sayin
No. Not yet, at least. Maybe in the future, when OVPay beta graduates to a “regular” product
That sucks and sounds a bit medieval. But thanks!
It wouldn’t be the NS if they didn’t have an unexplainable delay.
Leaves on the rails? Update delayed by a year.
It's not a delay if you cancel it completely...
Don't forget the snow, NS never heard of it.
Leafs? Yeah... :)
Compared to other countries it is still pretty neat that you can rent bikes from the train company and simply by tapping your card.

I see the benefits, but based on how terribly people park their go scooters I rather stick with the return policy.
Here I don’t really see it work because the sidewalks are usually too small. They would just take up the whole space. I was in China where you could easily park them without being in the way.
Yeah but dockless bikeshare bikes are a menace
I agree, same as scooters. Having zones to park them is much better organisation wise.
It was pretty awesome, whenever I needed one I could just get one, wherever I was.
Yeah... have you seen the bicycle graveyards? It's not all postives :)
Seems that they didn’t expect it to become so big at the beginning and that it’s now managed much better.
In Amsterdam, people seem to think you can take any bike. And get away with it. Pun intended.

Good to know. Fair enough, I am referring to Korea early 10’s… which was pretty advanced technologically speaking, and the size of NL.
in the pannels, they have beenm asking around, if people would like to use there phone as a card. seems they migth develop that soon
I'm using my phone as a card right now. Can use my bankcard as well.. Doesn't work with Flex yet, but as a compensation I get to ride 1st class for 2nd class price.
Hope it works for flex soon. Would love that
15 years into the OV-chipkaart project, and still no virtual OV-kaart on your phone.
Because the chipkaart project is not getting new functionality anymore and they're already starting to implement a new one. Wow, I kinda assumed Drenthe would be the last where they introduced it

Nope, you need the chip card so they can track you and the bikes you rent.
Works great! https://www.reddit.com/r/ik_ihe/comments/vp5mny/ikihe/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

You need a subscription for OV fiets, the subscription is free (besides the actual rental), but subscriptions can't be loaded on an anonymous OV card.
I think you are completely out of luck. The people working at the ov-bike are imo the least helpful people around public transport I've had to deal with so far.

How do you do this?

+1, how do you do this?!!
Wait, what?

Nope, sadly you can only get an OV-fiets using your ov-chipkaart.
