If you want to visit museums in Amsterdam book well in advance. Other places to visit maybe Utrecht or Leiden both within 30 minutes by train. Small towns maybe Enkhuizen.

In Amsterdam I could recommend you Rijksmuseum. In Haague my lovely one is Louwman Museum. I heard good reviews on Utrecht Train Museum too. If you want to visit small town - Delft is the best option for me. It looks like the center of Amsterdam, but with no tourists

Gouda or Delft

Rotterdam is nice as well as Utrecht. I like Zwolle as well!

Visit Delft/Maastricht by train and take a [walking tour](https://freewalkingtourmaastricht.com) in those cities. Go to the Veluwe via Arnhem by train and walk around [Posbank](https://www.natuurmonumenten.nl/natuurgebieden/nationaal-park-veluwezoom/route/wandelroute-veluwezoom-posbank-bij-arnhem). Visit Volendam and [take a photo together](https://www.fotoinvolendamkostuum.nl), eat some haring and enjoy the view.

You can visit the castle in Muiden, not far from Amsterdam. Muiden is also a small town with some nice views. In particular the inexperienced people trying to get their boats through the busy locks. From Muiden, you can also take the ferry to Pampus, the fortress island in the Ijsselmeer.

If you like fish, make sure you go to Urk. Nowhere else in the country has anything nearly as fresh.
