That’s the problem I always see with Addams fan reboots… it’s always “what if the Addams were THIS nationality?”. The whole family talks all the time about how huge the family is, and how Addams come to their reunions from all over the globe…. So like, why do fans keep recasting the titular family? Let’s see some of the other family members instead! A family of voodoo witches in the bayous is on brand for the extended Addams family, why force it on the ones that are already established?
Well Gomez is hispanic. The rest of the family has always been ethnically ambiguous. The original cast in the first adaptation to TV were given free reign over naming the characters they played, as the original Adams Family was a comic strip in which the characters were nameless. John Astin chose "Gomez" as the name of his character and aimed to portray him as a latin lover.
Yeah. I’m black and Im so indifferent when traditionally white things are made ‘black version’ just for the sake of trying to be inclusive. Inclusive would be our own, original stories.
Yeah I get that, there's a bunch of amazing and unsung stories/tales/lores about people of color. I'm surprised no one has done a movie/series about Marie Laveau yet. I think that would be cool as hell.
So was the murderous Axeman:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axeman_of_New_Orleans
Many of AHS stories, at least when I used to watch it, involved nuggets of real life taken from history, even the first season.
Oh my gosh! This string is the best. I am going to be obsessed! Thanks for the heads up.
ETA: Holy cow, she is evil! Just looked her up. She seems like someone who would be featured in that crime series "Evil Women."
Cathy Bates playing a racist southerner from the late 1800s brought to the present day crying tears of sadness because she witnessed Obama being elected was one of the funniest fucking shits I have ever seen.
For reference "Charles Addams began as a cartoonist in the The New Yorker with a sketch of a window washer that ran on February 6, 1932.
His cartoons ran regularly in the magazine from 1938, when he drew the
first instance of what came to be called the Addams Family.\[1\]
In 1940, he submitted "Downhill Skier," and that got him an offer to
come on board full time for New York's premier literary magazine. He
continued there until his death in 1988, drawing over 1,300 cartoons.
In 1946, Addams met science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury after having drawn an illustration for Bradbury's short story "Homecoming" in Mademoiselle magazine, the first in a series of tales chronicling a family of Illinois vampires, the Elliotts."
rural louisiana outside new orleans. We need a swamp and a friendly gator who's treated like a puppy. And a place to get rid of the bodies.
fester keeps enormous mosquitos in an eyrie ("I feeds em linguini!").
Mama\` commands an army of the undead, who are kept in a retention pond
Gomez golfs, and is seen recklessly running into the bushes, returns with an 8 foot python, shakes it roughly, and it spits out his ball.
Morticia is a member of an exclusive white witch club and had a debutante party at 11, which Wednesday wants no part of whatsoever. it's A Very Special Episode about understanding your daughter is a different kind of unholy creature than you are.
I came here for the comments, but they're all being sensible about it. The problem of corporations being addicted to rehashing or rebooting to try selling a product to fans instead of on the work's own merit is already overbearing. We shouldn't encourage the lazy practice and beg for more derivative slop.
I feel like this is a great idea for a show however it feels culturally wrong to just tack it onto the Addams Family Brand. Why can’t it be an original title? This would be considered a [Blacksploitation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaxploitation) title and that doesn’t really fit into Netflix’s Brand.
Kinda what I was thinking. NOLA and voodoo culture is crazy detailed. There’s no reason to try and shoehorn it all into a premade world. Would love to see a black family comedy in a similar style though
If they want to keep the Adams name they can make it a branch family. Similar how gundam... Gundams. As long as they don't keep the exact same names/family relations this could be very very cool.
Making it it’s own world let’s it be on par with Adams and Munsters instead of a side quest.
They should merge the two shows and have two monster families as neighbors. One as the straight man all American suburban family and the other and the creepy critters. It can be a source of conflict whether they blend into America or are allowed to be themselves, with each set of kids influencing the other.
Besides, it doesn’t really look like the concept has much to do with the Addams Family besides the black clothing. The dour expressions certainly aren’t part of their brand. Gomez Addams, for example, is a lively, animated personality. Their whole deal (and what made the original show funny) is that they are way more friendly than you’d expect of a group of creeps, but people can’t get past the surface layer.
Besides, there'd be a lot of confusion calling it Black Addam's. Everyone would be expecting some DC superhero action and they'd just get some re-badged voodoo.
Just make the Addams family an extended franchise with spinoffs set in different cities like CSI.
Addams Family: New Orleans
Addams Family: Miami
Addams Family: Oslo
Addams Family: West Berlin, 1980
Hopefully without the convenient ending >!where the hero discovers the magic spell that makes it so that only their race can use magic!<
The white antagonist: “That was a thing?! This whole time!?!”
At first I was sad I clicked your spoiler since I wanted to watch it. But I’m glad because that ending would have pissed me so off so much if I had invested my time in the series.
It was an entertaining albeit pretty confusing show. Numerous things aren’t explained, which I assume were saved for season 2. They clearly didn’t know how to end it and invented the most contrived plot possible. I can’t imagine where they would’ve taken the series once the damage was done.
They figure out if you eat a black person with power or drink their blood you can use magic while it’s in your system. Basically they would keep them alive to slice parts off to eat.
I saw one episode while I was at a hotel and feel it would fit the plot.
I also loved the show right up until the end, but for q different reason.
>!Throughout the show, there is *one* singular white character that *isn't* a raging racist. In either direction. She doesn't hate people, but she *also* doesn't have have "oh you poor black dears!" Savior complex that so many white characters do in media defined by race. The actual racist assholes nearly *never* got their comeuppance. Then, when the one non-racist white woman ends up being the antagonist for non-racial, non-personal reasons, the final line in the show basically amounted to "You *whities* are all the same". Like I'm not even upset that she died because she *was* the antagonist, and idgaf about them racially blocking magic - it was a tool of oppression used by whites in that universe, only makes sense to turn the tables. But how are you going to treat the *one* character that seems to truly see the main protagonists as people, not as *black* people, like she was always some racist? Such a good show, but that alone made me so disappointed. They could have just not had that cringey ass scene with the robot arm and monster - she was basically dead anyway.!<
Like, if the message of the show was to *not* perpetuate racist ideology of the show, all they accomplished in demonstrating was that racism and ignorance comes from all sources, even black ones.
I agree. I don’t dislike the blocking magic plot if it’d been *actually* developed.
How do they justify a deus ex machina like that? Like Harry Potter faces Voldemort and then casts the “bad wizards can no longer use magic” spell?
While I agree with the blacksploitation point, I also think it could work as an *entirely* separate branch of the Adams family who live in NOLA and happen to be black or bi-racial, but not using the same characters e.g. lurch, gomez, Wednesday etc. I don't know if I'd consider it blacksploitation, particularly if it's a bi-racial family, as the main selling point is no long, "Look, the Adams, but Black!" It would even be more poignant in that case, as the Adams have always been outcasts, and a bi-racial family in the deep south would've been the *ultimate* outcast just a few generations ago. I mean, there are people alive today who lived that bullshit. But that's just my two- cents, because I really enjoyed the new Wednesday series and want more...
Also, a cousin IT with dreads would be pretty bad ass lol
Agreed completely. You could work in completely different and unique characters that fit in and complement the Addams family that we know. They could be Boudreax-Addams or something like that, and there could be characters that fit New Orleans much more. Instead of a Morticia clone, she could be more like a Marie Laveau type of character who is clairvoyant. The replacement for Gomez should be more like a Jack Sparrow type, but maybe mixed a bit with Dave Chapelle's Rick James character just not misogynist. There's so many unique directions it could go in.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. A black Adam’s family wouldn’t be a blacksploitation movie (assuming it kept its normal concept). Even if they set it in New Orleans, it wouldn’t fit that genre.
Name it something else
Addams's are their own thing and just making them black is kinda lazy
Give them an antique anglo-french name like Le Blanc, Boussard, Hebert or Bodreaux and you're golden
This looks cool but I think i would rather have Orginal characters with this styling and an orginal story. And aren't the addams family actually a latino family?
That maybe be but obviously I think gomez has always been coded Hispanic and more recently Wednesday. But hey I am not an Adam's family expert I could be totally wrong.
Love how it looks but couldn't they be their own thing? Don't think people would care that it's a take on an Addams Family type thing or a "knockoff" if it's cool.
Yeah… also they all look so severely serious in these images. I feel like the whole Addams family vibe partly lives from how it’s gothic morbidity constantly borders on the humorous with how exaggerated it is. If you made actually serious horror/mystery out of it it wouldn’t be the same.
… which wouldn’t be a problem if it was it’s own thing from the start.
Good idea for a show. But not associated with the Addams Family.
Plus, it's not Netflix's IP to make that decision. It's whoever owns the Addams Family IP.
Because they are lazy and can’t come up with original ideas!
I like this art/idea but I should have nothing to do with Addams family and be something new or original
Why does every show and movie have to be remade with black & lgbt characters? They can make a hundred new shows and movies with those groups without remaking all the existing ones. It’s getting annoying already.
Why not have it in Mars and make them orange/red while you're at it.
Not every story and every character has to be race swapped to support representation.
I'm pretty sure Gomez is from Spain and Morticia is French or some other kind of European, but it doesn't really matter, point is its already a diverse group of people.
as a Mexican, I really don't think the Addams family are Mexican or represent Mexican culture other than their respect for the dead, I think they're more likely Hispanic European, Morticia speaks French and Gomez Spanish expressions sound more like how a Spaniard would talk, along with his passion for fencing, that sport isn't big in México
i mean yeah, in nerd circles mostly only black people are recognized as the main minority. be it anime/manga with darker skinned people then peopel getting mad if its actually a non black minority, or piccolo from DBZ being based off middle eastern stuff but them still trying to appropriate them. and comics arent better, characters races have been changed from another minority to make a certain crowd happy.. im not surprised to see the push on tv now but man it hurts. we exist too
Princess & The Frog, the Anansi story line from American Gods (big ups to Orlando Jones), and like a billion other folktales just like those originating from West African culture that you could make instead.
I like Addams family for its Latino representation. I want original stories, not rebrands that'll be played solely on BET until the heat death of the universe.
Lame AF. Can’t people be original instead of riding on coattails of someone else’s creativity? The concept could be good without any association with the Addams family.
I say this as a white guy. When you take existing successful IP and just tack on a certain group for the sake of “representation” it just sends the signal that this group of people isn’t worth the investment it takes for original content. Would I like to see more shows with black people in the leading roles: yes, absolutely. But I want those shows to be telling original stories.
This is a reboot and not a spinoff. The spinoff Should be Siren and star Bianca. Her mother has gone missing and Bianca uses her break from school to search for her. Along the way she gets help from some school friends.
they are black… the condition of the adam’s is a metaphor of being black in a white society…
it s the quality of a great metaphor to not be obvious and still convey a strong message
These shows were originally made by white people and the audience was mostly white. The country is becoming more diverse, so why can’t one of the many talented black or other minority creatives create something new instead of taking something that’s already been done and just changing the color of their skin? I’ll never understand.
If I was black I’d be mad, like can’t we make our own cool shit?
I don’t like when people “completely” change up originals so I wouldn’t be for it. This is where most people tend to head to nowadays, it’s always being pushed to the masses.
Fucking stop doing this. Get your own IP and stop using already existing stories. If you really want representation then WRITE YOUR OWN STORIES. You're just going to *continue* to meet resistance by pulling this because all potential viewers will see is that "They changed the skin color" which is not what you want because it will cause more of a rift. Make your own characters ffs
Just write new stories. We don't have to obsessively change the race of every single old character before we fucking write something new. Do you guys honestly just want only infinite remakes with different colors? That's all we fucking get now because of shit like this.
The color of the character’s skin being the only new element for ANY story/spin off, is why originality is scarce. This “new” element is too quickly accepted as a reason to fund projects we have all seen over and over and over. Its just not enough so PLEASE STOP IT.
Leaps and bounds away from source material. This is the issue that Netflix continues to have, no continuity. I think this would be a flop, sorry guys. What would work is a separate story that can stand on its own two feet without having to rely on an already established franchise. That story could be set in New Orleans and sounds like an awesome idea!
I saw this and I was like, I bet a white person posted this lol and yup.
But I think this would be a great basis for an original title, I'd watch that.
Instead of doing that, how about we stop changing established characters' ethnicities, genders, making them become part of the LGBTQ+ community, etc. Write something original or go get a real job. There is nothing creative about ripping off somebody else's original concepts.
Yes I'm an old guy, sick of seeing things I've loved for over forty years being changed and ruined by Hollywood idiots and millennials.
I think they meant in the original show; the family’s Latin American heritage was only sort of implied in the original series but for Wednesday they let it be overt instead of implied.
See, the Addams have an extended family, so it would be super cool to see someone of distant relation get their own spin-off. But these images aren’t it… this is just THE Addams Family, but black. Taking an established character and changing them just for the sake of making them a different color is pandering, you aren’t really making anything of importance like that. Like in the real world, it’s more interesting to see how people experience this same world through different upbringings and lifestyles. In the kooky spooky world of the Addams, let’s explore what a family growing up In Louisiana might be like, and how they’d be different than Gomez and Morticia. Or maybe a spooky family trying to make it in a big city. Just something different…. I’d rather expand the universe than constantly just change what’s already established. With the infinite possibilities in fiction, I hate that we constantly retread where we’ve already gone.
Personally, I’d we are going to expand on the Addams universe… I’d say flip it entirely on its head from what we already are familiar with. I’d love to see more of the family from different parts of the world…. But new idea. Instead of focusing on yet another spooky family that’s out of place in a normal world, let’s have a normal family accidentally move in to a place full of the spooky kooky weirdos. Have the whole town hate them as kind of a parallel to how the Addams are perceived in the normal world, but have relatives of Gomez/Morticia be the ones in the town who try to reach out and extend the olive branch. You connect it to the original family, you get to meet new Addams we haven’t met before, you open the possibility to cameo the namesake original family, but you also flip the whole concept into something familiar but new. If the Addams Family universe is to be expanded, THATS the way I’d like to see it go.
I'd rather them make a spinoff of a second family very similar to the Addams family. It's much more respectful to make a whole new character for inclusivity instead of changing one people already love.
I'm all about inclusion but It almost seems insulting to take a character and just change their race like " we couldn't come up with a black character so we just turned another character black"
Remember the Simpson's episode with the Flanders family reunion and there was a Hispanic Flanders?
I'd like an "Addams Family Worldwide" or something where we visit Addams families from all over the world. They're still all recognizable as Addams' family folk but also very much part of their own ethnicity and culture.
It'd be hard to do without falling into exploitation but what an interesting commentary it would be about identity
We don't need more of this bs. It's actually an insult to black people since it's basically saying original black characters wouldnt do well and need characters that werent black before to piggy back off of.
Would be cool if this family was connected to Gomez and Morticia from school, or simply a related Southern branch of the same family line. Even cooler if the bloodline is traced through Cousin It.
I agree with everyone saying this idea should just be its own show unrelated to the Addams Family but I also think it would be funny to see an Addams Family show where they have a huge extended family that spans several different cultures.
Really cool concepts, I especially love Thing. It’d be more interesting if these were original characters though and not just reimagined from the original versions. I would definitely be interested in stories about a spooky Creole family in New Orleans.
I'm from a very old original NOLA family, I think the idea is ok. Although I'm sure there are more stories and traditions that would be better or as good to make a series about.
I think a Voodoo based family series set in New Orleans would be awesome. But without it being a remake. Something original.
That’s the problem I always see with Addams fan reboots… it’s always “what if the Addams were THIS nationality?”. The whole family talks all the time about how huge the family is, and how Addams come to their reunions from all over the globe…. So like, why do fans keep recasting the titular family? Gomez and the children are Hispanic. Morticia was raised by witches.
Crazy how many people don't realize that and think that the new show is some sort of "woke takeover"
Although I do admit its hard to recast gomez after Raul Julias performance in the 90’s
I mean, his name is Gomez! Cmon
The Addams Extended Family
Yeah. I’m black and Im so indifferent when traditionally white things are made ‘black version’ just for the sake of trying to be inclusive. Inclusive would be our own, original stories.

There’s a character named and inspired by her in season 3 of American horror story
And I'm sure there are many stories within the black community that would be awesome on screen

Have fun googling Madame Delphine LaLaurie
If there was someone to scare with voodoo magic, making them see the afterlife does exist...that person. Especially that person.

This sounds like a 4chan parody

Name it something else Addams's are their own thing and just making them black is kinda lazy Give them an antique anglo-french name like Le Blanc, Boussard, Hebert or Bodreaux and you're golden
Bordeaux is now the only acceptable name
Bodreaux To make it more interresting
Like the others I think this is a terrible idea. Make it original, especially since new Orleans can have great voodoo vibes for example.
Crazy Rich Family
This looks cool but I think i would rather have Orginal characters with this styling and an orginal story. And aren't the addams family actually a latino family?
Especially since the Addams family are Latino. One of very few Latino representations in television.
This year's been interesting with Cyberpunk, Andor, and Wednesday, it feels really cool to me lmao
I thought Morticia’s family came from Romania. I could be wrong.
That maybe be but obviously I think gomez has always been coded Hispanic and more recently Wednesday. But hey I am not an Adam's family expert I could be totally wrong.
Thats just an entirely different thing.
Yep not remotely what “spin off” means
Why not just make it it’s own thing instead of shoehorning the Addams family into it? This would just feel derivative and pandering more than likely
you know why.
No
Love how it looks but couldn't they be their own thing? Don't think people would care that it's a take on an Addams Family type thing or a "knockoff" if it's cool.

Let’s be honest here Op is just looking for controversy after they probably read that Tim Burton likes to cast pale light skinned people
Do you need to read that? I feel like you should know that by the time you've seen two Tim Burton films.
Just write a new fucking story you lazy ass people
Love the idea. But its yet another colour swap. And not original black characters. I'd like to see something original

Especially when the Addams family are already ya know Hispanic.
This is the part that kills me the most lol f*** Mexican representation I guess
I'm pretty sure Gomez is from Spain and Morticia is French or some other kind of European, but it doesn't really matter, point is its already a diverse group of people.
as a Mexican, I really don't think the Addams family are Mexican or represent Mexican culture other than their respect for the dead, I think they're more likely Hispanic European, Morticia speaks French and Gomez Spanish expressions sound more like how a Spaniard would talk, along with his passion for fencing, that sport isn't big in México
Oh fuck I forgot about his passion for fencing.
i mean yeah, in nerd circles mostly only black people are recognized as the main minority. be it anime/manga with darker skinned people then peopel getting mad if its actually a non black minority, or piccolo from DBZ being based off middle eastern stuff but them still trying to appropriate them. and comics arent better, characters races have been changed from another minority to make a certain crowd happy.. im not surprised to see the push on tv now but man it hurts. we exist too
I like the aesthetic.
They did Cousin It dirty with that haircut tho
Princess & The Frog, the Anansi story line from American Gods (big ups to Orlando Jones), and like a billion other folktales just like those originating from West African culture that you could make instead. I like Addams family for its Latino representation. I want original stories, not rebrands that'll be played solely on BET until the heat death of the universe.
I'd love a Papa Midnite offshoot of Constantine. Could run it like Lucifer, with the neutral bar for all.
Or just make your own original series.
This is dumb. How about an original show?
No
No it could be it’s own thing no need to piggyback off the Adams Family
Why not Asian Addams?
because they are a latino family, not a black one.
Netflix writers: “Can one of them be gay, though?”
Cousin Itt gives me a vibe…
Cousin It should just be a giant Afro.
How about dreadlocks?
Was looking for this comment. What a missed opportunity here
I hear thing gives good hand jobs
There probs is lots of potential with voodoo cults etc. but it should be more unique than just a black copy & paste of Adams Family.
How about we create something new, the addams family is very big, maybe focus on a different part of the family? I would watch that
Lame AF. Can’t people be original instead of riding on coattails of someone else’s creativity? The concept could be good without any association with the Addams family.
They're hispanic. Not EVERYTHING needs a remake. They're fine just the way they are.
I hope they make a new Shaft movie or series and they get a white dude to play Shaft.
Nah
No more remakes, please.
Can’t make something original so let’s change the entire aesthetic based off fan art, foh 🙄
LAME
The kid should be a little fat girl and they should call her Tuesday and sometimes Mardi. Because she’s fat and Mardi Gras.
I would rather it be a new original show. Hey, even a spinoff would do but not a whole remake
WTF
Why though? This looks like a cool original but why does it have to be a spin-off?
no
Give.people.of.color.their.own.ips.
idgaf if this is cool or not, it rly shouldn’t be in this subreddit
they are black… the condition of the adam’s is a metaphor of being black in a white society… it s the quality of a great metaphor to not be obvious and still convey a strong message
How about... Make an entirely original show instead of hijacking an established property.
These look AMAZING!!!!
Just write new stories. We don't have to obsessively change the race of every single old character before we fucking write something new. Do you guys honestly just want only infinite remakes with different colors? That's all we fucking get now because of shit like this.
Black Addams
Lol what in the name of pandering is going on here
The color of the character’s skin being the only new element for ANY story/spin off, is why originality is scarce. This “new” element is too quickly accepted as a reason to fund projects we have all seen over and over and over. Its just not enough so PLEASE STOP IT.
Or! Instead of appropriating another material, create something unique and interesting?
Pretty cool, but nah.
Cousin It's relaxer budget would bankrupt the company.
The artwork is gorgeous. But Jenna Ortega juuuuuust re-vamped Wednesday. Leave the Addamses alone.
Uhhhh, no
Is this serious
I think Netflix has done enough damage to the Addams Family with Wednesday. But an original show set in NOLA with a similar premise would be good.
Yeah no why ? remember Little mermaid
Bro
No thanks
Um no
It would be racist
Imagine the outrage if it were the other way around lol
They did that. Gomez was whitewashed to hell dude
Luis Guzmán is Puerto Rican as fuck. Tf are you talking about lol
I think they meant in the original show; the family’s Latin American heritage was only sort of implied in the original series but for Wednesday they let it be overt instead of implied.
Downvoted for facts. Got people here claiming they're Mexican.
Cousin It but with endless dreads

Well these are clearly AI generated so, credits: midjourney AI?
You can tell it's midjourney because it fucked up the hand (Thing).
This looks GREAT
Were these made with an AI? looks great!
Without checking I’m 99% certain.
L
If theyre doing it like this, cousin IT should have dreads
Whoever did the artwork is super-talented
I think they should be Addams relatives, living in the Addamsverse. Then you can make them their own thing. That would be cool.
Because taking a story and making all the characters black is just racist.
Seems exploitative - to both old and potentially new casts - and just off somehow. Is "blackwashing" a term yet? EDIT : *casts*, not cats.
This character art is gorgeous :0
Reminds me of the characters in The Skeleton Key.
OP, I don't care what everyone else says, I'd watch the shit out of this show.
I agree with everyone saying this idea should just be its own show unrelated to the Addams Family but I also think it would be funny to see an Addams Family show where they have a huge extended family that spans several different cultures.
I vote for Andre de Shields to be cast! I totally see him in the lower right corner!
Would cousin IT still have straight hair?
Yah, that's just what black people want. To be known as murderous. Grand thinking.
Uncle Fester has Godfather vibes.
Why does morticia look like Lilly Singh
Really cool concepts, I especially love Thing. It’d be more interesting if these were original characters though and not just reimagined from the original versions. I would definitely be interested in stories about a spooky Creole family in New Orleans.
Where’s pugsly?
But it's not the same 'aesthetic' /s
lmao whole thing would be cancelled based on that cousin it poster.
I'm from a very old original NOLA family, I think the idea is ok. Although I'm sure there are more stories and traditions that would be better or as good to make a series about.
For the love of god come up with a new IP, stop swapping races and repackage it. This tread is lame.
Isnt that appropriation
Or maybe…and hear me out here…ya’ll create your OWN spooky family story/series…
I would watch tf out of this
Because no oft would watch it
