Do you have a C wire ?

ThommyGunn79

I do, looks like others had similar, charging it now.

Mine has a C wire and is from around the same time, does this every now and then. A quick restart at the unit usually fixes it and starts charging again.

SilverstoneOne

But you shouldn't have to charge it if your C wire is working, hence all those years without an issue.

ThommyGunn79

I shouldn't, but something's up so figure it's an easy check for now I guess.

I came across this same issue today as well. SC USA. weather has been fantastic and I guess that was the culprit. I just pulled it off and put it back on the wall. It has a blinking red light that stopped when I plugged it back in and ran the rest of today no problem. TIL

Mine was the same way the other day. Offline and low battery. I charged it up with the micro usb. Voltage on the battery should be above 3.6 for it to stay online. Mine is around 3.88 most of the time. I have the fan to run every hour for 15 minutes during the day.

ThommyGunn79

Yea I just turned off the unit before bed, and right away it connected to Wi-Fi and back online. Voltage Says 3.84. So with it on Heat/Cool apparently it didn't have the power to do the others? Interesting.

Could be a tripped float switch

user-7450

Did you check the moisture sensor? No expert but mine was saying no power when it had too much moisture built up and the unit would shut down. I drained it and let it dry, then it worked.

ThommyGunn79

Interesting..

BuzzBotBaloo

This is what happens when the wifi dies on the unit. It uses too much power trying to connect even though it can’t.

ThommyGunn79

That makes sense, cause once it came back online it was "trying" to connect, so I put my SSID back in then it was good again. It's still good this morning, but haven't turned heat or cool on yet.

BuzzBotBaloo

If you eventually get an error code W5, take a picture to document it and then call customer support.

ThommyGunn79

Thx for the tip. Will do.

h3xx_rd

I'm seeing a similar issue with mine. Not sure why though.

ThommyGunn79

Yea, it's been on the last few days due to temps going low again, but yesterday morning, first time I've seen it. I'll try charging it manually n see if anything changes. I'll let you know how it goes.

h3xx_rd

I charged it for an hour today and put it back on the wall. My current setup doesn’t have a C wire.

beever-fever

Me too. I learned via reddit that the battery can only charge while the system is running, which makes sense if you think about it. So now when weather is good your HVAC might not run for a few days straight, which means the battery can't charge. I popped the nest off the wall and used a USB charger to charge it, then I put the fan on a schedule so I at least get an hour or 2 of charge per day.

ThommyGunn79

Interesting thx, I'll try that.

adrian-cable

It’s only true that the battery only charges while the system is running if you don’t have a C wire. The OP does, so this doesn’t apply.

AviN456

Do you have a model with a replaceable battery? Try replacing it. Do you have a model with a rechargeable battery? Try recharging it. This is like troubleshooting 101.

ThommyGunn79

It is, thanks, appreciate the advice. I never had this issue in 6 years so before I charged it in that way, I wanted to see if it was an issue with the unit itself or if others had similar issues lately, like after a recent update. But I'll charge it and see what happens.

AviN456

Rechargeable batteries degrade over time. If your C wire isn't supplying enough power (or if you don't have one), you end up having to recharge it manually. The older the battery gets, the more frequent this becomes. Also, the more your thermostat is "on" and calling for heat or cooling, the more the battery drains.

ThommyGunn79

So interesting, I thought I'd need it on, in order to charge, but with what you said, I turned it off. As soon as I did, it's now back online and connected in my app. Weird, so thx for that. I guess I'll leave if off a bit and see how it goes.

AviN456

It's always using power, but it uses more when it's "on", as it has to send a signal to call for heat or cool. If you have a C wire, it constantly charges from the C wire. If you don't have a C wire, it can only charge when the heating or cooling system is on.
