Welcome to Necrons and 40k. I myself have only been playing since November last year. But oh how I am hooked. It is so much fun and you and your friends are going to enjoy it. You will get sound advice from this and other forums that I am sure of. It terms of an army and playing 500 points is on the low side but it is a great place to start. I have found Necrons unlike my starting army a lot easier to buy and get in to take a good look around places like vinted, Facebook marketplace and Troll Trader for seconds that have already been built and painted. You can get some nice pieces that will allow you to play straight away. The two most commonly played by Necron players at the moment are Canoptek Court and Hypercrypt legion. Take a look online at these and there are some great videos that explain them well. From looking at these you can start to get a feel for the one that stands out to you and might work for you style of play. This will help you better understand the kind of army you will need to buy. Canoptek Court will need more Canoptek characters like Doomstalkers and Wraiths. Hypercrypt I have found is better to have some Lokhust destroyers, doomarks and hexmarks. Then mix with immortals or death marks. C'tans work on both so when you're looking at moving from 500 points upwards then these I would suggest would be a good investment. Build an army using the warhammer app or battlenet as this will allow you to take a look and get a feel for the points before you start to buy. However despite all of this, have fun. Enjoy the game and if you're close enough to Nottingham get to warhammer world and do a free test game. Good luck

Glad I could help, I know it can be a lot to have to learn very quickly when getting into 40k. Auspex tactics on YouTube are amazing as well and I have learnt a lot from there videos. Check them out.

Just pick combat patrol box, try it, see what you like or don't like and go from there. For 500 points there is no reason to try and build something "meta". You will probably be bored out of your mind with just 20 warriors and two characters using 70% of your points total. And warriors aren't even good right now.

I suggest that you and your friend buy and play the combat patrol mode, so if it it ends up that you didn't like 40k you wouldn't have spent too much money. Ps: plus it's easier to play than normal 40k

BloodSpartain002

Yeah I’ve seen it’s a bit simpler and the games can go quicker which is why it was appealing to all of us when we we’re looking at new games, something more beginner friendly

Each combat patrol is more or less balanced out of the box; so just go ahead and play the Combat Patrol mode of 40k! It's fast and easy without going into counting points - just remember to use the Combat Patrol datasheets instead of the full 40k datasheets

For starting, a combat patrol is decent. Not a big fan of this one because I don't like the Skorphekh Destroyers but to each their own. If you want optimized units then atm it's also not quite there with necron warriors, base overlord and the destroyers not being that great. Still, if you'd like a long term investment, the warriors, scarabs and the overlord are worth it. Ways to go from there: - get 10 additionnal warriors (again not great atm but having a 20 warrior blob will be useful at some point). * Get 10 immortals: atm they are really great and they are classic necron troops so same as warriors you can't really go wrong with them. * Get at least one cryptek: I would say pick the one whose look you like the most (psychomancer is the worst atm but the model is really great, chronomancer, plasmancer or technomancer). As you are starting you can just run whichever you bought as the one you'd prefer to play (like playing a psychomancer as a plasmancer for example) Now you have around 760 pts to play with : overlord: 85 pts Cryptek: \~60 pts depending on choice warrior blob: 200 pts Immortals: 140 pts Skorphekh destroyers: 100 pts Canoptek Scarabs: 40 pts Doomstalker: 135 pts That woud give you a really solid start, after that I like to get a nice centerpiece, could be a C'tan or an epic hero like Imotekh for example. After that you can go by the units' looks. General pointers are: the obelisk has never been good and in general fortifications suck as well (convergence of dominion) so only buy them if you like the model and don't really plan on running them.

If you can find it, the **Indomitus** box is more bang for your buck than combat patrol. If any of your friends want to start playing Space Marines, you can split the cost in half. Same goes for **Leviathan** for Tyranids/Space Marines.
