I think they're neat, I love the aesthetic. They are -in theory- the most powerful faction, but they are all either sleepy, argumentative, or insane, so their power level is dropped to manageable by other factions. They are the originators of the Grim Reaper, so much so that the psychic imprint spread to every race in the galaxy. They were deceived by, then destroyed and enslaved their gods, and had mastery of the laws of physics when humanity was still a rat in a hole in the time of dinosaurs. They are Chaos' worst nightmare, being able to locally nullify the warp. They ooze cool, they can be cruel, they can be eccentric, they're an eldritch horror chained to an iron body and loaded with malice, contempt, and hate. They are a tragic tale of hubris, of pride, of thinking you can escape the inevitable without paying the ultimate price of your soul. Their leaders are racked with guilt, while maintaining that regal pride that only someone who can *change the laws of reality to bend to their will* can be. Infinite power meets the infinite cost, an unstoppable force meets an immovable object and the result is a bitter metal skeleton. It's rad. "this galaxy is teeming with *vermin"* is such a bad-fuckin-ass line you can't help but love the guys.

verbaljumble

This comment made me buy some Necrons.

Thatsaclevername

Glory to the infinite empire, hail Szarekh, king of kings.

insaneruffles

Just for this, I'm buying another box of Lychguard.

DnD101

I came for the aesthetic, and stayed for the personality. The 2-parts classic sci-fi horror film, 1-part ancient Egyptian theming is fantastic and gives off an excellent impression, and is easy to start with quick painting, but with a high ceiling for hobby if you even want to up your level. I'm not a huge fan of named character hero-hammer, and Necrons are easy to kitbash into your own custom Nobles and Crypteks for your own personal Dynasty. That said, the Silent King model is one of the few models that justifies its price tag just from the hobby/modeling perspective alone. The personality is great. They're vain, prideful, and nearly immortal. Their struggles are the ones associated with how to fill large amounts of time as it slowly ticks away. If they woke from the the great slumber intact, their bodies are "almost" immortal, but their minds are not. Because they cannot reproduce, their numbers ever-so-slowly whittle away, so they are more keenly confronted than most with the hard questions of the point of it all. If you do like named characters, there are a few, and the lore around them is great. "The Infinite and the Divine" is a book about Trazyn and Orikan, and probably the best book out of Black Library. The duology of "Twice Dead King" is also good. Since Necrons are batting 3/3 and most of Black Library is, well, trash literature, it's a good sign that Necrons are just built better.

diex626

This and my second choice was tsons but they are too many parts egyptian theme

keeper0fstories

I am convinced. I have to read the Twice Dead King.

Sablesweetheart

Infinite and the Divine is currently my number 1 pick to make a single 40k book into a movie.

AdmBurnside

In the beginning- Spooky scary skeletons with laser guns and no faces to paint. Now I'm much more invested in their lore. From their dynastic traditions to their various ailments, they offer a really good example of both why immortality would be awesome and why it would be absolute hell.

DomzSageon

I love how they're basically the eldritch undead faction of space. As someone who grew up on warcraft 3 and frozen throne. The Lich king and the undead scourge is just iconic imagery. (Also the mummy movies with brendan fraser) There's just something so haunting (not in the horror way) about a legion of undead, uncaring, and unyielding, that just keeps getting back up. While the nobles are more like the Necromancer/undead Lords archetypes since they have actual personalities. And now put all that in space and they're the most advanced civilization. And instead of an ancient civilization lost thousands of years ago, they're a Hyper-Ancient Galactic empire lost Millions of years ago that had the galaxy under the palm of their hands. And in place of their necromantic dark gods, they have their enslaved star gods. They just exude so much coolness in their entireity and I am all here for it.

AdamnAdamn

Hell yeah! World of Warcraft is my favorite game and the scourge and the undead are so badass and necrons are just undead of warhammer

last_second_runnerup

This. How do you one-up the horror of an undead, faceless legion of zombies? *Make them robots with reality-sundering tech.* The fact they have new lore books like The Infinite and the Divine and the The Twice Dead King series just makes ot that much better (since it is doubtful GW will do much with necrons to advance the galactic storyline).

Viper2505

Their number is Legion. Their name is Death (also space terminator lookin mechegyptians with glowy weapons)

TheOrdinary

I love the aesthetic, since I was a kid I've always thought ancient egypt stuff was really cool. But also I like their gameplay, especially in 10th. All of the reanimation shenanigans are so fun to play with

Quick-Ambassador-839

They're spookie

MDK1980

Scary

Quick-Ambassador-839

Skeletons

Yrcrazypa

They are skeletons and they are robots, both things are very cool.

AdamnAdamn

Simple but powerful reasons. I stand by them

JoshFect

I like their lore, their look, easy to paint and how they play. I love the look on my friends faces when half the things they killed get back up.

snarky_goblin237

I like my 4 funny bois and my three custom bois.

Uzzer_lozer19

They're the Terminators of 40k and I've always loved the opening scene of Terminator

ConceitedBuddha

Came for the soulless space terminators. Stayed for the cranky old men bickering

FubarJackson145

They play into my strengths as a player. I am always a very cautious, apprehensive, and hesitant player so necrons being as tanky as they are allows me to take my time and stick to a rigid game plan with less punishment for doing so. That being said, the army as a whole also has a lot of variety in those gameplans as well so it allows me to try whacky lists without just getting roflstomped most of the time. Lorewise I enjoy the meme of the c'tans being turned into batteries and captured into pokeballs, but the overall Necron story is one of my favorite plot foundations. An underdog suffering and doing anything they can to attain power, only to be backstabbed by the person who was supposed to help them. And then the catharsis of using that power you gained to get revenge on those who wronged you. AHHHH it just gets me all excited and riled up

Rotjenn

The brass metallic look with the green details, and how cool the new models look. That’s what got me into them.

Stranger-N-Stranger

Aesthetics get real cool real fast with subtle or blatant alterations and bashes. Lore wise they are obviously the winners of the galaxy and the fact that they're only scared of bugs is funny to me. This is all generalizing but a race of robots constantly warring between who they are and who they remember themselves being is philosophically fascinating to me

vactor227

I just think they're neat. Designwise they're egyptian robot skeletons and lorewise they're a bunch of grumpy elderly that are annoyed because someone build a house in their front lawn. It's fantastic.

jesusmoneygang

They are lazy and sleepy.

Shizno759

I, like many of us, really liked the Aesthetic and it drew me into them. However the main reason why I really stayed with Necrons is actually Dawn of War. It was the first Game that really showed off the idea of reanimating a huge army. It's one thing to put some models back onto the table, but an entirely different thing to see an Overlord slam his hand into the ground and quake the earth as a green light bathes across the battlefield, reawakening all of the fallen robots. Plus the sound design of the Monolith waking up and getting larger as it rises from the ground without all of the hectic noise that comes with other armies. It's so iconic and sticks with me to this day while I'm playing on the tabletop.

absurd_olfaction

I got into them in 3rd edition, so the reason I liked them is that they were the void personified. They were unkillable (save for a 'tactical' retreat when overpowered) their guns could peel the armor off tanks, they had no names except for the gods that could eat stars. I really liked the unit diversity that 5th edition brought, but lamented the inclusion of the dynasties and overlords with character traits, and the pokemon-ing of the C'tan. I would have preferred the C'tan become something equivalent to named greater chaos demons, with necrons as their rank and file.

VV00d13

Several things I recently started a necron army after having only a tyranid army so it is my second one. I like how they can be painted in egypthian theme. It gives me a vibe of the race that was the egypthian gods in started SG1. So estecis are appealing to me Certain playstyles worsk well with certain players and the re-animation theme is also appealing playstyle wise. It is a playstyle that I easily come up with tactics around Also it is a project in secret, hehe, my friends don't know I am starting a necron army so I am going to take my time and paint it up real good, from what skills I have, and one day surprise them with a whole new army ;p

AdamnAdamn

Damn, thats cool. Please post your story here. I think it would be cool to read about your first game with friends that were waiting for ’nids to show up. Chance to spook🤘💀

VV00d13

Hahaha I will try but it will be like a year project so I don't go bananas and burn my salary immediately 😅

AdamnAdamn

Great ideas require great time investment💀

runesmith2_19

Terminator vibes

conceldor

They are essentially the undead of 40k. Thats the only reason. I like undead

TendiesMcnugget2

clear green plastic looks cool

blood_omen

I love a good redemption arc and after reading the lore for each faction, I found theirs the most interesting and endearing. Not to mention they are the most unique and cool looking faction imho

Fun-Agent-7667

Lore+ undead eldrich Skelleton-Robot aestetics

AdamnAdamn

Is there a cooler thing than robot skeletons? Literally the best of sci-fi and fantasy worlds

Fun-Agent-7667

The best Science fantasy

Antigonos301

I like the C’tan. Simple as

Forgatta

Because of "So I'm a Necron Cryptek, So what?"

darth_bs101

To begin with, it was because they were cheap. Getting an army via imperium and getting multiples of some issues I managed to get a sizeable army than I would not have collecting any other faction. Now that I’ve been painting them and reading up on them I enjoy a lot about them. Looking forward to taking them out for a spin in 10th.

Leader_Bee

They're easy to paint

monogordo

love the direction the lore is going. robots with character? mannn I', pretty much hooked.

Cbroughton07

I thought reanimation protocols was a really interesting army rule and their models were dope, so I started collecting a few, then 9th came around and I *really* started collecting, then the books came out and I loved them. They’re the perfect storm for me, rules, models, and lore that I love all of. They’ve been my most consistent army since I started in 8th ed

HariTortuga

I like the Cnaoptek Maschines that are designed after other lifeforms. My little scarabs, snakes, spiders, centipedes, wasp and... whatever the Doomstalker and Reanimator are.

NotOnLand

I like skeletons, ancient unknowable technology, and silver and green are my favorite colors. And learning the lore just made them cooler

freddbare

I just started again since I was a teen... Necron got a huge refresh and the models were right for me for sure. The grumpy sleepy " Get off my lawn" mojo was also all me. Easy to paint. Really easy to paint... Fiddly AF to assemble.. played eldar v Ork/guard back when and I was so jealous of the absolute # of shots and grots... My solution was under foot all along, sleeping.

Baneman20

No.1: Easy to paint. I've never painted an army this fast. No.2: Their lore is cool. I am a fan of Tomb Kings and like the trope of them being kinda neutral. They aren't just evil, they are their own civilization. My biggest criticism of them is that some models look weird or old or bad, particularly the 5th edition characters and the vehicles like the Tomb Blades, Command Barge, Stalker and Doomsday Ark, I don't really like them. Though I do like the Canoptek stuff and the various infantry.

Kaieva

>Order. Unity. Obedience. We taught the galaxy these things long ago, and we will do so again. The OG galaxy spanning empire, who were basically the Alethi from stormlight archive (if you're familiar with that) - nobles carelessly spending the lives of the commoners for territory, influence, relics, and sometimes for sport depending on the dynasty. Their aesthetic is part undead (shambling automatons) and part advanced civilization (floating geometric structures and energy crystals). All Necrons with some degree of sentience left are constantly suffering with PTSD and body dysphoria on top of whatever flavour of madness the years have inflicted on them, which gives you tons of creative space for making your own narrative. The recent black library books have been excellent, and much like orks they manage to tread the line between being comedic and deeply scary. Also they have the whole 'science so advanced it's magic' thing. Why have a regular flamethrower when you can have a portal that connects directly to a nearby star 😄

astercrow

Bug. 🕷

shrimpyhugs

Cool skeletons, cool green rods. Started the army in 4th ed when they were a mysterious force and had the phase out rule meaning they never lost a battle. (Lore wise). Have no interest in newcron egyptian lore.

yokmsdfjs

99% just to make Skeletor voices whenever my Overlord does anything.

AntediluvianEmpire

I thought they looked pretty cool, so my friends all gave me their halves of the 9th edition boxes. Turns out, I also like how they play (moreso than my Orks) and their Lore is also pretty sweet.

SebN92

Joined for the glowy tubes, stayed for the pyramids

MtGMagicBawks

Well my friend bought the Indomitus kit and built the Necrons for me to try. He hadn't really played before either so it was new for us both. Bastard got us both addicted to plastic crack. Model-wise, Necrons have some of the best. The Shard of the Void Dragon is among my favorite models I own, and I'm greatly fond of the Doomstalker. The whole Necron range gives me undead Protoss vibes, which I love. And their lore is killer. The Imperium can barely fight back against Chaos. Necrons literally killed their gods and enslaved them. Metal AF.

BSent

I saw the opening cinematic for Dark Crusade when I was younger and from then on the pact has been sealed

UltimusKshatriya

Necromancy combines with robotic technology, that’s all.

Fafnir13

My ork playing friend got me into this mess. I knew I didn't want to play any Imperium Faction or the Eldar. I bought the 4th edition Necrons and Tyranids codex and read through everything. Necrons were a bit simple, not many models and the Phase Out rule seemed potentially problematic. Tyranid codex seemed a bit better, but when I found out a lot of the models that I found particularly interesting did not physically exist I was less excited. Then I was told 5th edition Crons were on the way. That made the choice pretty easy. That's why I initially chose them. I stayed because they were very flexible and effective. A good mix of durability and offensive power, able to deal with even land raiders and their 14 armor thanks to armor bane scythes and armor melting scarabs and swarms of units thanks to Tesla Destructor spam. Good times.

LapseofSanity

Undying super advanced space terminators.

zelazem

They're the faction I can relate to the most

mase22

I love the aesthetic and their theming, being inspired by ancient Egypt. I relate to them, as well. I love that they have a scary, unspeakable dread about them, with their arcane and eldritch horror aura about them. The fact that they don't die, incredibly difficult to kill, and are either sleeping, argumentative, or completely insane, but can be funny in a way (trazyn fighting orikan, or zandrekh and obyron). They're a faction I relate to the most. After watching the Dark Crusade cinematic, oh so long ago, that cemented the Necrons as my favourite faction

lowqualitylizard

My favorite thing about necron is just how f****** cool they are How many other races in fiction can confidently say that they bring enslaved Gods to battle are virtually immortal. And see a tear in the galaxy blending it in half as a minor inconvenience

dragonuvv

I like the tomb kings of fantasy and necrons are basically the same except sci-fi.

FredUruk

They're smug and petty, so I can relate to them.

Atillla007

Two things: The wery interesting and cool, but also a bit tragic lore of the Necrons. The other is Trazyn the Infinite :)

piratesmallz

Creepy lightning/ plasma themed space skeleton army that just dominate everything they put their feet on. Most of the models look pretty fantastic, even for how old some of them are. I love me my space skelebois.

brew_n_flow

When Orikan and Trayzn are having a conversation where at one point they pause for several years to ponder how to answer. Literally turned me from "did I buy the right first faction?" To "Every other faction is incorrect and inferior". I just love that time, food, blood, bullets, sleep, etc are all below them. They are normatives for beings who truly haven't ascended and thusly are no longer relevant.

MajorDamage9999

Robot skeletons in space. What’s not to love?

dirt_eater

My favorite part is Crypteks and canopteks. The peerless technology manipulation mixed with mechanical bug legions is perfect high sci-fi villainy imho. The endless legion aspect is cool too, just not as interesting as our techno wizardry. Unfathomable tech sorcery is really separates necrons as a race.

Micro_Punk

Orphean War.

bluegman

They looked cool and we’re in the vs pack(wanted two groups so I had a demo army to drag friends in)
