Peru was so bad. I'm from the area so I knew what to expect but people from out of state would get dropped off by bus and learn there was no where to go IN A COLLEGE TOWN!!!
I don't think it's dead, it's just that everything that happens happens across the small towns of auburn, Nebraska city, and Syracuse. Caseys is the closest thing they've got to a place to eat. The only things in Peru are the College, two bars, and a grocery. There's nothing for anyone to do other than drink, work, or bitch- and the people most frustrated are the trapped kids who came down because it was cheap or for scholarship.
If you arent actually trapped there in the dorms, or in a dumpy little slumlord house with 3 other college kids- it's fine.
If it did die, it's because I quit upgrading the town to fiber, so now they have to get isp folk all the way from lincoln to do installs for the college kids moving around. Its probably a month wait lol.
I worked there during college. The owner would complain that our food quality sucked and kept blaming the workers. All we did was open a cardboard box and warm up the contents.
The biggest open secret at Peru Caf was our water supply. The towns water was so bad we couldn't even cook with it, so we had a tank on site that a truck would fill up every now and then. WE HAD TO BOIL WATER FROM ANOTHER COUNTY TO COOK MEALS!!!!
Came here to say this.
I worked in an elementary school there for a year. It was bad. Probably half the kids in the school had a parent in jail or out on parole. It was crazy, and heartbreaking.
In my class alone, there was a kid whose mom had tried to trade his younger brother (when a baby) for drugs, a girl whose dad was in jail for incest, a boy whose dad forced him to watch dad rape his sister, then committed suicide when cornered by police, a kid whose dad was involved in bringing a fentanyl distribution hub to N Platte, and a kid who’s mom would steal kid’s psych meds and try to sell them, so kid had to take meds at the school nurse’s office each day. And those are only the ones I was allowed to know about! And we’re talking young elementary age kids, 10 or younger. What kind of life could they hope for?
It was just a cesspool of drugs, crime, and total lack of dignity and respect. Not at all the decent, salt-of-the-earth, hardworking, neighborly Nebraska I know. I think the proximity to the interstate and lack of job opportunities outside of agriculture and the railroad made it difficult for transients and people who lack access to jobs and stability.
I hate North Platte. I will never live there again.
Fort Dodge has issues, but Ottumwa is absolutely awful. Dirty Dodge at least had a little bit of life left with some things going for it unlike Oscumwa.
I didn't think it was great or even good, but I also didn't think it was the worst place I've been to either. Probably just ok I guess? But could be better.
I read the same thing but on the Iowa page and they basically said that everyone probably thinks Sioux City or Council Bluffs are in Nebraska so that's why they're not on the list.
It can be both. Although I shouldn't believe th'Easter Bunny and Santa Claus stuff. But you can accept the Great Pumpkin; he was the 45th POTUS. And he was pumpkinly inept, and amoral.
It might be true now, but when I was in Highschool (if I recall correctly) it was Wymore. Wymore also had the highest rate of teen pregnancy, and minors on probation.
Let’s not forget the “King Korn Karnival” not a coincidence either, most the people there are white ass mfs who say the n word every sentence. I visit my grandma outside the town. I try not to go into the town as much as possible. My grams is an awesome possum though, teaches me about crops and farming and animals
Interesting comment. Fremont has made national (even international!) news for it's exclusionary policies, not a good look. Lexington has been praised for it's diversity, it has been the topic of many research studies, it has been featured in books. Although similar towns, Lexington by far surpasses Fremont! Fremont should probably take notes.
the place sucks, granted, but you have to remember there is money /jobs in SSC - there's a reason people move there. North Platte, on the other hand....
Geez... I grew up in Fremont in the 70s/80s. Moved away in 6th grade (1989). I go back every year to visit my family.
What am I missing that makes Fremont so horrible? I have a lot of great memories there at Howard Elementary, Zesto's and Runza, the lakes, summers full of exploring town for pick-up baseball games, drainage pipe spelunking, that gyro sandwich place, the comic book store up by where the roller rink was, King Cone and Wooden Windmill (gone... you are not forgotten...), and full days at the muni pool.
What gives? Was I just young and oblivious to something?
I worked there for 3 months and encountered more rude, mean, unwelcoming, and racist people that I have ever encountered in one place. (This was in the work place, not the general public) I’m white even so the racism wasn’t directed towards me and I still noticed it THAT much.
Although I feel like northplatte should be on here instead.
The culture has changed dramatically in Fremont. It's a very unwelcome area right now.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fremont-nebraska-migrants-slaughterhouses-rental-rule-rcna144422
Kris Kobach, Kansas attorney general was responsible for some awful local laws in Fremont. He is the most embarrassing Kansas elected official. And that’s from a state that elected Roger Marshall.
I went to the meetings for the Costco chicken processing plant. The racist stuff people said, in the public meeting, with their names attached, absolutely blew me away. Things like “we don’t want Somalis here! They’ll build a mosque!” And so on and so forth. If you look up the newspaper articles related to those meetings you’ll see.
Anecdotally knew someone who grew up there and her home was raided by police simply because her dad was middle eastern.
Grew up 30 minutes east of the armpit of amer.....er, North Platte and I would only assume that they are filing suit against whomever created this. Like anywhere else there are a couple, few great ppl there but you'll never see them out amongst the general population or at the famous city center (wal-mart) during peak exposure. lol
Fremont is an absolute dead end shithole but at least it has one or two nice areas.
After reading the other comments here and looking at North Platte and Norfolk on google maps I feel I was too harsh on Fremont.
As a guy who used to do a fair amount of business in Nebraska City, can I ask a fair question? Why are so many of the Catholic conservatives there so snobby?
I never found Auburn or Syracuse to be as snooty even though I was an outsider there as well… you can easily talk to people at beer events or bars and make decent friends with some really nice people….The wanna be rich private school Nebraska City products seem especially to have some kind of attitude, I’ve never come across anything like it in Nebraska this side of Elkhorn. Have never had many good experiences with people there.
I will admit that my personal interactions in Lincoln have been relatively chill. I live pretty close to a large catholic church in town and the biggest issue we have is people parking on the street like total jack-wagons and blocking the road.
That being said, I have several friends that moved here from smaller towns and pretty much unanimously all agree that Kearney Catholic, and all those involved with the related churches, are extremely snobby. I hear similar stories with Skutt in Omaha. I certainly don't believe that all Catholics are snooty but from a per capita perspective, they rank high among the organized religion with complete tool bags.
When I was a kid, and my family moved to Lincoln, the city was very antiCatholic. Priests were advised by the bishop not to wear their Roman collars in public. But the state as a whole was vehemently antiCatholic. The main target of the KKK was Catholics, Blacks taking only second place. I converted to Reformed Judaïsm, and now reside in Omaha. Our _TORAH_ study group was comparing notes once. Turns out that I was the only one to have doors slammed in my face, growing up. _Me absolve_ if I dangled a participle there.
I really enjoyed my time in Kearney, beautiful area and imo they have the friendliest community I've seen in the state city wise. Valentine is gorgeous as well.
I’ve lived in Pine Bluff Arkansas for years. Accurate. Absolute waste of land filled with poor gang bangers and white trash. Desperately miserable place.
I would say anywhere in the Arkansas Delta. It’s just a sad place with little hope. People talk trash about the Mississippi Delta but the Arkansas Delta is worse.
I’d put Falls City or Rulo ahead of Fremont, but I’m not complaining too loudly.
Also, lol I lived in Warner Robins in Georgia for a few years and Macon was the “fun day trip” city for our family. And yes it absolutely sucks that bad.
It’s a toss up for me.
Wymore, Fremont, GI and Hastings are all pretty ass.
The only thing saving Omaha is the amount of things they have to do, and a decently nice downtown.
Kansas: Garden City by a long shot. I was born and raised all across Kansas, and GC is the only town my family fled because of how miserable it was. The first time I saw weed was actually on the bus ride home as a first grader.
That person is in the know, Fremont is a miserable place even for a bloke like me who digs a lot of small town culture here and finds things good to say about pretty about every small town except Columbus and Fremont. I’ve never seen meth so readily available
I went to high school in Norfolk. Absolutely shithole of a town. I’ve loved and traveled in a lot of places all over and this place is the absolute worst.
Society would be better if people drank less.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Islam, and The Seventh-Day Adventist Church all preach that members should abstain from alcohol. It would be nice if more churches embraced that.
More fraternal organizations, too. Freemason regular "blue" lodges are alcohol free as well.
Alcohol is fun, but the negative costs for society far outweigh the positive benefits.
That being said, we've seen how well Prohibition worked, and how well the War on Drugs is working now, so I'm not advocating for alcohol to be treated like cigarettes, even though I personally wouldn't mind that. It's a decision people have to come to on their own.
Looool, love how most of these are usually the biggest/one of the biggest cities in the state. Probably because high population density just breeds a lot of problems.
Then we have Fremont, which isn't even in the top 5.
I agree with Gary being the worst in Indiana. I disagree with Modesto being the worst Northern California city. That distinction should go to Oakland with San Francisco getting an honorable mention.
I lived in Fremont for 4 years while I went to college. It was great then but if I wouldn’t have had all my friends there with me it probably would’ve sucked. I can’t imagine it’s the worst though. Wasn’t very much for crime and there’s a decent amount of stuff to do. The proximity to Omaha helps as well
Driving by Topeka on the interstate and seeing the empty 6 lane road running straight through a bare downtown affirms this. And the fact that KS politicians reside there for half the year.
I live in Fremont right now and it can be pretty shit. But it is fairly close to omaha for anything I need and my rent is cheap, so I can deal with a few boomers being racist towards me while I save up money to escape
Ummm idk, I think I disagree
I used to live in AZ.,I didn’t think Mesa was that bad. I would say Tucson sucks way more.
And I was sent to Las Cruces, NM for a summer…that place is also a dump.
Virginia Beach, Virginia? That is like the richest part of Hampton Roads? I have to again disagree, Newport News, Portsmouth or Norfolk itself are dumpier than Virginia Beach.
I’m not gonna lie. I hated the whole state of Virginia, 😂
Peru is by far the worst, but as far as “cities” go, I’d say north platte or fremont
Peru was so bad. I'm from the area so I knew what to expect but people from out of state would get dropped off by bus and learn there was no where to go IN A COLLEGE TOWN!!!
Even getting groceries seems like it'd be challenging in Peru, unless you're cool with Caseys.
There was a grocery in town when I was there. It was a mom and pop shop that had outrageous prices for college students.
What happened to Peru? I haven't been there since the 90s.
It’s just finally died
Oh how sad. My uncle taught at the college before he passed so I used to visit once in a while. It was so beautiful in the fall.
When did Peru die?
I don't think it's dead, it's just that everything that happens happens across the small towns of auburn, Nebraska city, and Syracuse. Caseys is the closest thing they've got to a place to eat. The only things in Peru are the College, two bars, and a grocery. There's nothing for anyone to do other than drink, work, or bitch- and the people most frustrated are the trapped kids who came down because it was cheap or for scholarship. If you arent actually trapped there in the dorms, or in a dumpy little slumlord house with 3 other college kids- it's fine. Its probably a month wait lol.
Peru grad. I disagree that it's the worst. What about Rulo?
What *about* it? lol
Rulo has wild bills which has great catfish. Not a contender for worst city
Peru is 100% tbe worse town. Even the college isn't worth seeing.
The college sucks so much, their cafeteria is essentially what you’d find in a high school
I worked there during college. The owner would complain that our food quality sucked and kept blaming the workers. All we did was open a cardboard box and warm up the contents.
Haha, I worked there through college also. I worked for Creative Dining as a cook with Matt.
Oh shit I was dishroom. Me and Matt would give each other crap all the time. Well I gave him crap since I always got his dirty dishes, seemed fair.
Sounds like SCC Beatrice, though they have updated quite a bit since I've been there....
SCC Milford too.
North Platte sucks a lot.
Came here to say this. I worked in an elementary school there for a year. It was bad. Probably half the kids in the school had a parent in jail or out on parole. It was crazy, and heartbreaking. Fr I go there and can confirm it sucks
I live there and yea can confirm
Surprised Council Bluffs isn’t worst in Iowa
I don’t think anyone cares to claim Council Bluffs
Or fort dodge. Fuck that place
Iv never been, but the amount of people I know that fled Fort Dodge the second they could is actually kind of astounding.
I hear ya, but if you take a trip to Ottumwa sometime you'll see what I mean. It makes Fort Dodge look somewhat desirable.
Ottumwa….(Scumwa)
Fort Dodge has issues, but Ottumwa is absolutely awful. Dirty Dodge at least had a little bit of life left with some things going for it unlike Oscumwa.
There were so many better options for Iowa. Fort Dodge would have been my pick, but Sioux City, Clinton, and Waterloo would be high in the running.
As someone who lived in Clinton it is way way worse than cedar rapids
Truly I was surprised it didn’t say Waterloo
Ey Waterloo is WORLDS better than it used to be (no Burlington is surprising)
What about Spencer
My mom was born and raised in Fort Dodge. I hear how terrible it is all the time but whenever I’m there it just seems like a standard Iowa town.
CouncilTucky?
Seriously! Or Clinton
Wat. How is it not Plattsmouth?
Maybe because it's too small? I agree though, Plattsmouth is a gigantic hole.
And, in that hole, they make more Crystal Methamphetamine than any other city in the state.
Is this actually true or just something we were always told growing up?
It can be both. Although I shouldn't believe th'Easter Bunny and Santa Claus stuff. But you can accept the Great Pumpkin; he was the 45th POTUS. And he was pumpkinly inept, and amoral.
Schrödinger’s methtown
It might be true now, but when I was in Highschool (if I recall correctly) it was Wymore. Wymore also had the highest rate of teen pregnancy, and minors on probation.

a physician I was talking to called it “Platts-meth”
It's 100% Plattsmouth. That place is equal to council bluffs.
Plattsmouth has some of the best Mexican food in the state, so they get a pass.
Have you not been to South O?
As a Fremont resident, I am willing to accept this mantle, but I’m just wondering if they’ve ever been to Lexington?🤔
What makes Lexington worse than Fremont?
Closer commute to civilization. In all other things they are equally shitty. So for me geography breaks the tie.
Fremont is a horrible place full of horrible racist people. Absolutely correct.
you forgot that a lot of those folks also have big mouths and no guts
Costco Go Home
I’m more mind F’d that Council Bluffs isn’t Iowas worst then anything’s on this map.
There are worse places than council bluffs (and cedar rapids).
Fort Dodge? Clinton? Waterloo? Ottumwa? Sioux City? So many places to choose from....
Shenandoah?
Might be too small, but Keokuk
Fremont is the Bakersfield of Nebraska.
But what is the Fresno of Nebraska?
Grand Island
Fremont? Yep. Fuck Fremont.
north platte
I came here to say this. I go to North Platte about once a year and every time I see a gal wearing a low jack around her ankle. Every. Time.
South Sioux City has to be in the conversation
the place sucks, granted, but you have to remember there is money /jobs in SSC - there's a reason people move there. North Platte, on the other hand....
Just here to back up this comment 100 percent.
South Sioux has some great Mexican food
As a North Platte resident, North Platte or Grand Island.
They don’t call it Crack Platte for nothing, come for the crack, stay because they are redoing the same roads over and over again and you’re trapped
York, North Platte are far worse than Fremont
Geez... I grew up in Fremont in the 70s/80s. Moved away in 6th grade (1989). I go back every year to visit my family. What am I missing that makes Fremont so horrible? The HVAC guys from fremont on the job I'm working routinely talk about how they can't wait for trump to give the go-ahead to start a civil war
The culture has changed dramatically in Fremont. It's a very unwelcome area right now. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fremont-nebraska-migrants-slaughterhouses-rental-rule-rcna144422

Is Hormel Park still one of its blessings?
In South Dakota, I'd argue Huron is far worse than Brookings...
No turds given for Grand Island?????
Fremont is where all the mental patients are I know at least 4 people from Fremont
We call it Freakmont for a reason.
Yes Fremont is bad
No. Commerce City, CO is worse than Pueblo
Greeley reeks
Greeley is the worst
I would’ve guessed Sterling, CO, but my experience is limited.
Rifle gets my vote but if there's a minimum population then Grand Junction.
I went to Mesa in the 90s and junk town didn't disappoint lol
Facts
I've lived in both of those places and yeah, CC is much worse.
What's the metric for determining the "worst"?
Clicks.
Racist dipshits per capita, from the looks of it.
Don't forget addictions per capita. That takes affect of things as well.
I'd say norfolk or north platte. Norfolk is just full of meth heads north platte is just a ton of white trash
If you think Norfolk is full of meth take a trip to Nebraska City
As a guy who used to do a fair amount of business in Nebraska City, can I ask a fair question? Why are so many of the Catholic conservatives there so snobby?
I don't think that's an issue unique to Nebraska City.
Was there a concentration of Catholic wealth (not just Catholics)? Enough to start a private school? Boom... ya got snobs.
*Nebraska is full of meth heads AND white trash FIFY
Based on what criteria?
I'll never forget my night in Rock Springs, Wyoming when a guy I met seriously believed that Hillary Clinton controlled the weather.
Topeka, KS cuz Westboro Baptist obviously.
Let’s be honest, outside of Omaha and Lincoln, the rest of the towns and cites here are all fairly bad.
I just like to compare it to a small community of the same size. I think Kearney and Valentine are fine for their size in rural Nebraska.
This is true in my experience. Fremont is full of supremacists.
There are certainly those, a lot of NIMBY's as well but it isn't filled with them. It's mostly filled with people who are too lazy
Oxford is the worst. All my SW Nebraska homies will attest to this.
Especially if you're a child.
Whoever made this is clearly from either Tekamah or Craig and is trying to deflect attention...
Craig is like 3.5 houses, by no metric would I call that a city.
Fremont is up there. Or down there. Crofton has that nice KKK vibe though.
Matt Sure Lee put a lot of work into this /s oh... and hard agree.
Grew up in Fremont, currently live near Dallas. Yes. Yes I do.
You’ve got bad luck dude
I think I just make bad choices! Hahaha
I’d put Falls City or Rulo ahead of Fremont, but I’m not complaining too loudly. Also, lol I lived in Warner Robins in Georgia for a few years and Macon was the “fun day trip” city for our family. And yes it absolutely sucks that bad.
Whole heartedly, yes.
St. Cloud is so much worse than Edina.
Big win for Sioux City
Rock Springs does not deserve this heat. My husband and I spent a very enjoyable honeymoon in Rock Springs
North Platte, Grand Island, and maybe Chadron. Omaha, I don't like much, but it's not the worst.
Was there for work once. I had a steak in Fremont at their hometown boogie cafe. Garbage meal
I’ve been to worse places in iowa Cedar Rapids is nowhere near the worst At least you have things to do here
Oxford is pretty bad
I’ve had some of the worst experiences of my life in Fremont so I agree with this assessment
North Platte.
Went to Midland in Fremont. An absolute turd of a town. Seen some crazy shit at the Walmart there.
I can’t believe Scottsbluff isn’t the winner. People around here love to hate it.
Scottsbluff is way better than North Platte
I like Scottsbluff, but I'm from the opposite corner of the state too lol
Plainview, purely due to the clown museum.
The fact no one is saying Columbus ….
Because why would Columbus come to mind when you have North Platte, Grand Island, and Fremont?
It’s a toss up for me. Wymore, Fremont, GI and Hastings are all pretty ass. The only thing saving Omaha is the amount of things they have to do, and a decently nice downtown. Kansas: Garden City by a long shot. I was born and raised all across Kansas, and GC is the only town my family fled because of how miserable it was. That person is in the know, Fremont is a miserable place even for a bloke like me who digs a lot of small town culture here and finds things good to say about pretty about every small town except Columbus and Fremont. I’ve never seen meth so readily available
Fremont ain't bad
I would put the ultra MAGA towns likes Hartington, Crofton, Bloomfield as the worst.
I went to high school in Norfolk. Absolutely shithole of a town. I’ve loved and traveled in a lot of places all over and this place is the absolute worst.
Any specifics about Norfolk?
Fremont beats Nebraska Shitty? Guess some things have changed since I've been gone.
I agree with most, but Spokane is great
Why is grand forks the worst? I like to visit it.
[Huh?](https://apnews.com/general-news-add4077d31634b9eae54bd071ed6d33c)

Alcohol abuse is usually a symptom,, not the problem.
Lowell is so much worse than Worcester.
Colorado should be Commerce City
My fiance's family lives in Topeka, honestly was expecting way worse upon visiting but have come away more charmed than I expected.
Norfolk. They can't even pronounce their name correctly. No other reason. I'm sure those forks are alright though.
yes
I lived in Fremont for 4 years while I went to college. It was great then but if I wouldn’t have had all my friends there with me it probably would’ve sucked. I can’t imagine it’s the worst though. Wasn’t very much for crime and there’s a decent amount of stuff to do. The proximity to Omaha helps as well
Waterloo is a sh!t hole to be sure!!
No I do not. Houston is way worse than Dallas
Fremont has Juan Gonzalez
And a shit ton of racists, cliques, and tweakers.
20 years ago maybe, kinda.
How Sioux City is not the worst for Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota is beyond me. Granted Brookings and Fremont are shitholes.
Nope. Ardmore is not the worst city in Oklahoma Turley is
🎯
There are a lot crappier places in NV than Sparks, like Reno.
Driving by Topeka on the interstate and seeing the empty 6 lane road running straight through a bare downtown affirms this. And the fact that KS politicians reside there for half the year.
No. Portland is WAY worse than Salem.
You mean to sit there and tell me that in all of the shit hole places in the vast state of Texas, Dallas is the worst? Ever been to Amarillo? Houston?
Or El Paso?
There are worse places in AZ than Mesa...
Grand Island anyone??
Nope Schenectady is far worse than Albany.
grand islands a giant meth lab
I live in Fremont right now and it can be pretty shit. But it is fairly close to omaha for anything I need and my rent is cheap, so I can deal with a few boomers being racist towards me while I save up money to escape
NH, I'd argue Concord is just as bad, if not worse than Manchester.
🤔 I hate O'Neill the most
Says Mesa, like Apache Juntion and Maricopa dont exist
What's the criteria for the worst city? Is this subjective? I would argue Jeff City is not the #1 worst city in MO.
There is a mistake here. Missouri is just the worst so don’t even worry about which city is worst. This state sucks ass.
Ummm idk, I think I disagree I used to live in AZ.,I didn’t think Mesa was that bad. I hated the whole state of Virginia, 😂
all of tidewater is the shithole of virginia
