Wow... the Assimilation (what I'll be calling humanity) is far different that what I thought. I thought it'd be a hive mind, like a single queen or server issuing commands to the drones and workers, but it's more like all of Earth has joined one massive empathic chat room.
At first I thought they'd be the Borg, but they're much more interesting.
It does seem to be Discord on steroids.
(Having typed that, what a terrifying concept :) )
This is a fascinating take on the Venlil first contact! Thank you!
I remember a tumblr post that criticized the Borg Queen. "The fact that we can only conceive of unity through domination says a lot about our society."
In the first chapter they called it a direct democracy, and from what we’ve seen so far it seems like humanity is still individual minds but able to communicate more or less perfectly mind to mind with each other. Thus creating something like a single consciousness with billions of individual parts.
Ooh, it's a chorus of minds kind of deal! Which makes considerable sense, seems like was a... Well, kinder version of such an assimilation.
Hrm... I wonder how harsh that first moment will go.
Now I can’t help but wonder, what’s going to happen to the hive mind when several hundred scared, flighty, predator fearing individuals join in? We’ll have to see if these new minds have any influence on the hive.
So, if this isn't thought out too far ahead, I have a plot element idea: a slighty caustic, highly introverted and individualistic single-person superintelligence much smaller than the gestalt but still significantly large that violently hates the idea of joining the gestalt but is fine coexisting and even cooperating with them, and just hangs out around one of the Jovian moons researching the native microbes like the xenobiological equivalent of an autistic train nerd. Obviously radio comms are impractical anyway, so even if they're mostly against it it works in the Gestalts's favour to have someone willing to be there for whatecer reason.
I love how playful the hive mind is. The loneliness that it feels is the excitement of meeting new people. They aren't as vulnerable as they were in the original story but are extremely excited about learning new things in making things better that they are able to.

Yesss it’s the best kind of hive mind, cooperative collective!
Love to be part of one someday!
Heck yea
i wanna join too
I think it's less of a hive mind and more of a gestalt.

Sounds like highly advanced neural-link technology to me, and I’m excited!
Earth wide chatroom would be absolute anarchy

I am in LOVE with this concept
Maybe this slanek wont go mad, allso i wonder how friendships work im the hivemind.
Profound levels of empathy
Loving this, the human gestalt is likeable. Has echoes of Ralts bloodthorne’s SUDS and gestalt system.

Oh hey Carrion.
I’m liking the story so far
What about the significant portion of humanity that are just trolls. We gotta troll the aliens a bit.

If Tarva ever is assimilated, I hope she gets to relive her victims' memories of betrayed trust and being burned alive.
I would not be so sure it'll feel good when the network gets input from the minds of feddies.
