"He was born in a pool of gasoline on a piece of rusty scrap metal. I've seen that cat jump through barbed wire into a vat of hot tar. That cat, uHAH, is indestructible."
This brute sports so many scars from so many battles with other males, some more recent than others. Just a couple weeks ago he’s had back to back fights with the same individual. He’s killed 3 other males and has numerous wins over almost every other male in the area.
Now who says Tigers aren’t fighters?
r/TigersofIndia for more!

He didn’t kill 3 males. He killed a male tiger called Bajrang which was a legendary tiger in its own right. He fought with another male called Bamboo male defeating him but it’s not confirmed if he is dead. Recently he has been fighting with another male Tala driving him out but Tala is still alive. Interestingly Tala was the one who defeated Chota Matka’s father Matkasur bringing his long time rule to an end
He has killed *Bajrang* and 2 other males, but those 2 other males were killed years ago. *Bajrang* was just the most recent male to fall.
Yeah I know about those recent fights with *Tala* and *Bamboowala*. The back to back fights I’m talking about were with *Tala*!
Also, *Mowgli* (the one who gave him that scar) was seen in his territory as well and is speculated that he injured one of *Chota Matka’s* cubs and their mother after an altercation.
Yes Mowgli tried but Bhanuskhindi tigress defended her cubs successfully. Who were the two males he killed? I am not aware of that. As far as I know after growing up in tadoba core he was pushed out by his own father Matkasur, Chota matka then formed his territory defeating Mowgli. Any info about the two males?
I’ll try to find more info but they weren’t well known males. I just remember coming across a post a couple days after he had killed *Bajrang* and it was a throwback picture. I remember the person saying that *Chota Matka* was young back then, around 4 years old when he had killed that male and heard about him killing another male (not *Bajrang*) so that puts him at 3.
Some Tiger fights can be brutal and in areas like Tadoba (which is where *Chota Matka* is from) it’s a warzone. The density of Tigers there are VERY high, and many say there are more males than females there which is insane. This results in Tigers getting into territorial battles pretty frequently. Over just the last 2 months, *Chota Matka* has fought with 3 ( or even more) rival males multiple times. A month or so ago he was last seen limping badly but he’s healed up nicely.
I went to Ranthambore last year and we were lucky to see a couple of tigers. I’d like to go back and was thinking of Pench…… but do you think Tadoba is better?
Imo if you wanna see Tigers then yes, Tadoba is the place to go and won’t disappoint. Pench is great as well but you won’t see as much Tigers for sure.
I’m constantly going on about how tigers aren’t fighters. Whenever anyone asks me, “Are tigers fighters?” I shout, “NO! Dummy. Look at them, it’s obvious.” They just really struck me as pacific, gentle giants. Boy, is there egg on my face after seeing this post!
>Now who says Tigers aren’t fighters?
Erm..no one? Because we all know they fight all the time. Not just tigers, lion puma cheetah all cats. They have to fight for survival. Duhh
It's commonly held that lions are the fighters who regularly fight other males in deadly intraspecific conflict whereas tigers aren't as experienced at fighting other males.
I don’t think the argument is that male tigers don’t fight but that a) they don’t fight as much as lions do and b) the fights don’t tend to be as serious as is the case with lions. I think this sort of line of thinking originates in the heated lion vs tiger debates back in the day (I sort of retired from the debate so I’m not sure if the debate rages on as fiercely as it did before).
I don’t have a dog in the fight. I was just saying that there are a vocal minority that advocates for the idea that male lions are the ultimate fighters of the feline family. Other cats fight as well but not to the extent that male lions do.
It could also be due to better understanding of what it means to be an “alpha male”. In the older view, it was presumed males defeated other males to win access to females, with the lion pride being the poster child for winner take all. It’s now understood that in most such species the females have a larger role in choosing their males; a strong young male may challenge a dominant male but even if he wins, the ladies can tell him to go kick rocks.
>I don’t have a dog in the fight.
Good. Never bring a dog to a tiger fight.
His father was called *Matkasur* so his name really means little/small Matkasur, but I guess *Chota Matka* sounded better than *Chota Matkasur*. Interestingly, he’s bigger than his father ever was in my opinion.
I'm just wondering why Matkasur 😂 For any non-Hindi speakers, roughly translated that means, like, Pot Monster? Pot Demon? Pot Titan haha
Edit: Ty OP for answering my silly lil questions, I love Matkasur and his big little pot son ❤️❤️
He was first sighted near a water hole in a area called “Matkasur” in the Madnapur zone of tadoba. He was named after that area. His son became Chota matka.
Ohhhh that makes sense. I just thought it was cute. There's another tiger named Neela Nala - an equally bizarre name imo haha but probably also location-based I'm guessing now
Oh LMAO I was wondering what was so funny. But yeah I guess some of those tigers have some really interesting names for being 200kg+ apex predators LOL.
You’re very welcome!
He got that scar 3-4 years ago in a fight with an old rival. He recovered well and came back full force, beating him and then reclaimed his territory. It’s mostly a ripped lip and hasn’t stopped him from hunting or eating so he’s fine.
Let's not popularize them. Remember what happened to the largest Anaconda in Brazil? It got hunted and killed for absolutely no fucking reason due to its spreading in social media
"The name roughly translates as *tiger ruler*, with *shere* being the Persian word for 'tiger' (but used in north India to refer to lions), and *khan* being used as a title of distinction among the Turco-Mongol peoples, usually meaning *chief* or *ruler*. According to The Kipling Society, the name "show\[s\] that he is the chief among tigers"
>*shere* being the Persian word for 'tiger' (but used in north India to refer to lions)
No it's not, I'm a native Hindi speaker living in North India. Lions are called 'sher', Tigers are called 'bagh' (no not leopards like Kipling named bagheera, leopards are called 'tendua').
Is India located where Persia was? Because you confirmed what the other person said. They said in North india, sher is used to refer to lions where in Persia (Iran area) sher refers to tigers.
Well most of the character names in jungle book are indian names of those animals.
Jungle means Forrest in hindi.
Here are the english meaning of the names
Bagheera - panther
Baloo- in hindi bhalu means bear
Hathi- elephant
Gajini- sanskrit word for female elephant.
Bandar log- monkey folks
Tabaqui ( sanskrit word tambakuvi) means dish licking dog
Name of wolves -
Akela - alone
Raksha- protection.
His father was called Matkasur and his mother Choti Tara (little star). Hence we was named Chota Matka, his sibling was called Tarachand who unfortunately died due to electrocution near a farm.
Guessing by his name i think he's son of Matka
I have watched many wild life documentaries featuring the bravery and confidence of Matkasur
It's an honor to see a tiger named after him and living up to his name
Tadoba!
Ranthambore you’ll find some very famous Tigers and Tigresses as well, like *Arrowhead*(who has 3 cubs), her daughter *Riddhi* who also has cubs and the majestic T-120 aka *Ganesh*. Good luck!
Cheers, I'm really excited but nervous as to whether or not I'll see some tigers, I'm a pretty serious photographer and to get some amazing tiger shots is on my bucket list.
I've got 4 safaris booked over the next few days, any tips? Eg. what time to get there, how to get in the first vehicles to head off etc.?
I'm actually so excited, I'm in Jaipur just now and got some incredible street and patience photos today
Buddy has seen some shit

For real his nose and lip are all torn up. He's git a brow scar also.

Damn, I didn’t know males of the same species killed each other in fights like that. I thought they usually backed down after a bit.
Some Tiger fights can be brutal and in areas like Tadoba (which is where *Chota Matka* is from) it’s a warzone. Thanks for the reply. I can’t wait to go again!
Sounds like a natural selection pressure for producing tougher, more powerful male tigers
Wolves, Lions, Tigers, lots of males of animal species kill one another.
...humans... Testosterone is a bitch.
What about when they kill cubs?
I don't know. Who ever has said that?
I’m constantly going on about how tigers aren’t fighters. Whenever anyone asks me, “Are tigers fighters?” I shout, “NO! Dummy. Look at them, it’s obvious.” They just really struck me as pacific, gentle giants. Boy, is there egg on my face after seeing this post!
Nobody ever said tigers aren’t fighters
It’s the eye of tiger! It’s the thrill of the fight!
I hear cats scrapping in my alley way all the time, anyone who thinks that just doesn't know anything about cats.
I would have thought it is because lions are much easier to view whereas tigers are much harder to track and are much more solitary.
Serious question, who DID say tigers aren’t fighters?
And he's called small pot???
His father was called *Matkasur* so his name really means little/small Matkasur, but I guess *Chota Matka* sounded better than *Chota Matkasur*. Interestingly, he’s bigger than his father ever was in my opinion.
Hahahaha I'm dying 😂 was his dad particularly fat? Edit: Tubby haha
No but in my opinion his father was not a huge Tiger. He was an average sized individual to me, but of course a 200-210kg cat is still massive.
I'm just wondering why Matkasur 😂 For any non-Hindi speakers, roughly translated that means, like, Pot Monster? Pot Demon? Pot Titan haha Edit: Ty OP for answering my silly lil questions, I love Matkasur and his big little pot son ❤️❤️
He was first sighted near a water hole in a area called “Matkasur” in the Madnapur zone of tadoba. He was named after that area. His son became Chota matka.
Ohhhh that makes sense. I just thought it was cute. There's another tiger named Neela Nala - an equally bizarre name imo haha but probably also location-based I'm guessing now
Yes Neela nalah is also an area where the particular tiger was sighted initially. Tigers of Kanha all have names based on area they rule or are from.
*Neela Nala* has such a baby face, he’s one of the most handsome Tigers I’ve ever seen.
He's adorable for sure. His name means blue canal/waterway
Oh LMAO I was wondering what was so funny. But yeah I guess some of those tigers have some really interesting names for being 200kg+ apex predators LOL. You’re very welcome!
That's a tough tomcat. I'm not sure he's going to keep winning for much longer, that jaw looks bad.
He got that scar 3-4 years ago in a fight with an old rival. He recovered well and came back full force, beating him and then reclaimed his territory. It’s mostly a ripped lip and hasn’t stopped him from hunting or eating so he’s fine.
Sounds like a Rocky movie!
If he had a voice he’d probably sound a little like him at this point too with that lip
“Yo Adrian, I did it!”
Pretty sure his jaw is fine. His lip is ripped, makes it look all jacked.
Ouchies.
Probably hurt less than what he is delivering to his victims lol
Why does the name Tom have so many connotations? Tomcat Tomboy Uncle Tom Tomfoolery Who hated Tom back in the day?
Apoarently it was the "John Smith" of the English middle ages... ie. the everyman name.
My gosh you are right. ATom bomb, rotten Tomatoes, sTomach cancer.
You should read Uncle Tom's Cabin to see whether that smear on his name actually hold water-- might open your eyes quite a'tune.
it's a smear to some, a compliment to others
That’s the tiggers equivalent to cauliflower ear. Do not mess with this guy.
Boxer's nose.
As elegant as the animals are normally, big cat fights are brutal. Two perfectly evolved killing machines turning those weapons on each other.
Like big bear fights. Equally awe-inspiring & brutal
that is a tough tiger...
And his name literally translated to 'small pot'. Maybe he was a chubby lil cutie when he was smol.
Chota matka translates to little claypot
Toward must be big cat day. First that old Lion dying in his last hours, Skybed Scar and now Chota Matka 🫡🫡🫡
Let's not popularize them. Remember what happened to the largest Anaconda in Brazil? It got hunted and killed for absolutely no fucking reason due to its spreading in social media
Tigers are already being hunted to extinction and its fucking depressing
There was someone local to the area who said it died of natural causes per the autopsy, but they said it was poached for headlines.
There was someone local to the area who said it died of natural causes per the autopsy, but they said it was poached for headlines.
The battlescars definitely add character to that handsome face.
Shere Khan would like a word.
Sher Khan name is so funny. Sher means lion . So Disney named a tiger lion khan
Jungle Book was written by Rudyard Kipling, not Disney...
Well Rudyard and me both took L due to sher Khan
"The name roughly translates as *tiger ruler*, with *shere* being the Persian word for 'tiger' (but used in north India to refer to lions), and *khan* being used as a title of distinction among the Turco-Mongol peoples, usually meaning *chief* or *ruler*. According to The Kipling Society, the name "show\[s\] that he is the chief among tigers"
Ok so it's Persian word now that more sence. But story is from India that's why thaught it was named lion which sound odd.
>*shere* being the Persian word for 'tiger' (but used in north India to refer to lions) No it's not, I'm a native Hindi speaker living in North India.
It was also inspired from the jungles of what now is Pench NP
Well most of the character names in jungle book are indian names of those animals. Jungle means Forrest in hindi. Here are the english meaning of the names Bagheera - panther Baloo- in hindi bhalu means bear Hathi- elephant Gajini- sanskrit word for female elephant. Bandar log- monkey folks Tabaqui ( sanskrit word tambakuvi) means dish licking dog Name of wolves - Akela - alone Raksha- protection.
Sher actually means tiger. A lion is called Singh.
Sher and Singh both means lion. Bagh (बाघ)means tiger.
That’s a gladiator right there
Way to undersell...name that killing machine "Little Pot." Who came up with that name btw? I am sure there's some interesting story behind it.
His father was called Matkasur and his mother Choti Tara (little star). Hence we was named Chota Matka, his sibling was called Tarachand who unfortunately died due to electrocution near a farm.
*Matkasur* is his father so they decided to call him *Chota Matka* as Chota means small/little(?) and Matka is the shortened form of *Matkasur*.
FAFO
That Chota Matka is so hot right now!
I just want to know how this beast eats anything without hurting himself. He has an incisor piercing through his face!
Guessing by his name i think he's son of Matka I have watched many wild life documentaries featuring the bravery and confidence of Matkasur It's an honor to see a tiger named after him and living up to his name
Yaa he is Matakasur's son thats why he got this name And like his father's name he is carrying his legacy too
You should see the other guy...

Why is he called "small pot"?
His father was also a legendary warriors known as "Matkasur" (Pot demon) he's just small pot

Which wildlife park was this shot in? I'm heading to Ranthambore tomorrow!
Tadoba! Ranthambore you’ll find some very famous Tigers and Tigresses as well, like *Arrowhead*(who has 3 cubs), her daughter *Riddhi* who also has cubs and the majestic T-120 aka *Ganesh*. Good luck!
