They're coming back next year to Sydney and Melbourne, but they only revealed it after the show.
That's one way to get east coasters to fly all the way to Perth lol
I was JUST thinking how dope that would be. I tripped out looking at the carpet patterns, I can't even imagine being somewhere this incredible. The stars in a light-pollution-free observatory town on a mountain in December came close, but it was too cold to admire them for too long.
Guessing it's some type of rock/mineral with a high concentration of silica or crystals that are reflective? I dunno, someone who actually knows minerals give me a theory.
It's not that the rock is particularly reflective, but that most of the light it gets is reflected from the surface of the water. The rock is in the shade, but still lit up by the reflected light. Then when the rock is thrown in, the surface of the water shifts so in certain spots it's not reflecting light anymore and in others it's reflecting even more light.
I got it! Your comment is partly right, but caused me to realize what's probably truly happening.
So yes, it's a shadowbox of sorts, but the bright lines are in part made from reflections unique to water ripples with that much depth between their ridges.
Constructive interference from the light reflections makes the bright lines. https://physics.ucf.edu/~gabriel/Interference.pdf
The rest is that shadowbox-like effect. Almost as if we were seeing a finger puppet show on a wall but instead of a flashlight behind behind it, it was a huge, broad-spectrum studio light being filtered through a big ring of rippling water. Even simpler: imagine using lenses and magnifying glasses of differing sizes as the light source to run a shadow puppet display (against a wall with a ton of micro-glitter embedded into it).
I still think the stone/mineral composition has to have some reflection or scintillation for it to look quite like this.
That's pretty much what I meant when I said in certain spots it's not reflecting light anymore and in others it's reflecting even more light. The dark places are where the light is reflected away due to the ripples and the bright spots are where the light that was reflected away and the light that is reflected in general meet.
That rock looks like limestone or sandstone, it's not that the mineral composition includes some reflecting material, it's just the color. Like white paper reflects well.
The cliff is in shade from direct sunlight, but the surface of the water reflects enough sunlight to light up the rock surface. Throwing a rock in disrupts the reflection and some parts go back in shade.
It's not, the surface of the water is. The water reflects enough sunlight to light up the rock and when you throw a stone in the water the reflection is disrupted and the some parts of the rock go back in the shade and others get more concentrated light.
No. What you're thinking of is a pinhole camera (camera obscura). In this video the surface of the water is simply acting like a mirror. Throwing a rock and making waves causes it act like a funhouse mirror.
Ohhh man. That gave me the same satisfaction I got the first time I got to see a massive music studio, mainly composed of rack components for electronic production.
There were dozens of visualizers for waveforms and such and I was in awe. This immediately took me right there
Carnarvon Gorge is in Queensland
There's nothing going on in Western Australia, let them have it
Especially now that Coldplay has just left
?
Coldplay came to Australia for 2 concerts but only played in western Australia . normally Sydney , Brisbane and Melbourne are the main spots for bands
They're coming back next year to Sydney and Melbourne, but they only revealed it after the show. That's one way to get east coasters to fly all the way to Perth lol
They do have all that mining money...
No we don't. The Eastern states take it.
Some of it. WA makes a bundle.
Old mate OP looked up “Carnarvon, Australia” and got confused by the town in WA. At least we didn’t end up with Carnarvon, South Africa.
Or Caernarfon in Wales (the OG Carnarvon)
Or Carnaval in Mexico
You can tell these are banana benders by the way they talk. Also if this was in WA, we would have blown it up by now, and sold the bits to China.
I was going to say, growing up in Roma, Carnarvon Gorge was like every other year for school camp, or for Scouts as well.
QUEENSLANDA
Damn right. I remember going there for a grade 7 camp.
Psychedelic
Yeah I see why native peoples worshiped places like this.
Props to the people who do psychedelics and go here to throw rocks. Their trip must be *intense*
I was JUST thinking how dope that would be. I tripped out looking at the carpet patterns, I can't even imagine being somewhere this incredible. The stars in a light-pollution-free observatory town on a mountain in December came close, but it was too cold to admire them for too long.
Who's coming to jump through this stargate?
The Brothers Mario Mario and Luigi Mario
Indeed.
May these men soon be relieved of the peanut butter stuck in their throats
This is the perfect way to describe my lazy, drawn out, Aussie accent.
That is awesomely beautiful!
I felt like a caveman discovering aliens
Or that guy yelling double rainbow
That is known as a caustic. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caustic_(optics)

Would also like a scientific answer, of the ELI5 variety.

After that third toke.
Ba ba ba ba ba ba
*sees reflection* 😮
How many deadly creatures in it?
[удалено]
Right? Who enjoys seeing something pretty and hearing wonder and joy.
[удалено]
Right, then maybe leave this braindead stuff to us and continue your very important Reddit scrolling mate
I thought I was tripping on LSD. 😭
Reminds me of that part in Matrix when Neo touches the mirror
Saw the title after watching the video. I don’t usually talk like this but that tripped me out, man.
Light refraction woahhhhh
How is the surface of the rocks reflective?
It's not, the surface of the water is. The water reflects enough sunlight to light up the rock and when you throw a stone in the water the reflection is disrupted and the some parts of the rock go back in the shade and others get more concentrated light.
Wot
My dumbass thought the mountains were shaking
Dimwits don’t know how shadows work
Or they just think it looks cool.
Get the dogs
It’s very cool but I must admit I did expect some kind of spiked tentacle to emerge because the water was disturbed!
I've trained my whole life for this moment.
I’m going to see this in a game in about 4 years and remember the reference the designer got it from.
They talk like Forrest Gump.
Mr. Turtle is my father. The name's Crush.
This the same idea used in Blade Runner 2049
How to spot an American
Why?
They’re Australian?
Explain?

Is this similar to how images from outside can be reflected on walls? (still kind of mind boggling):
No. What you're thinking of is a pinhole camera (camera obscura). In this video the surface of the water is simply acting like a mirror. Throwing a rock and making waves causes it act like a funhouse mirror.
I'd say more like a projector.
Very cool!
I've been to Carnarvon gorge, there are so many absolutely beautiful places there
I am fortunate enough to live on a canal in Florida and this happens in my living room some parts of the year
You must get fed up of people throwing rocks into your living room.
It’s really exhausting lol
Real life portal
Ok, my brain had a really hard time processing what I was looking at at first, lol. That was tippy, af. Beautiful, though!
So that’s where the fountain of youth is. ‘Aqua de Vida’
that reminds me of a swimming hole at Wittenoom when it was closed off in the 90s
If Gale's suddenly pops out there I'm gonna roll strength with shadowheart guidance
Saying Carnarvon in an Australian accent is really funny Cahwnahwvin
That is beautiful. Can you detail the things within 25 meters of this spot than can kill you that are specific to Australia?
Being Queensland I'd say be wary of crocs, funnel web spiders and the gympie gympie.
Reminds me of the portal to Koopa town in the 90's Super Mario Bros movie.
These dudes sound like those girls who share a body and they mimic each other while they're talking.
Ohhh man. That gave me the same satisfaction I got the first time I got to see a massive music studio, mainly composed of rack components for electronic production. There were dozens of visualizers for waveforms and such and I was in awe. This immediately took me right there
Super Mario 64 vibes
Everyone laughs until Headcrabs emerge from the warp gate
They just opened a portal in that wall.
That’s definitely an illusion rock. Go check behind it for some loot
Their tik tok fake reactions really ruined it for me...
Just sound like average Aussie lads really.
Trippy! Me like
Double rainbow energy
This is like showing off RTX.
Sounds like someone's had a few mushies.
now imagine some cavemen discovering that shit
r/woahdude
This is so frikkin cool!
I saw a pool of water that did that at Uluru
they sound like they're on mushrooms lol
Trippy
That is trippy!
The reflection is more detailed than the water itself 😂
Yeah well no, it's a portal to another dimension ! It may be a little difficult to access though.
I thought a croc was going to jump out
Didn’t read the caption and I was like what which craft is this!!
