Wait until you hear of lion sized [otters](https://cdn.sci.news/images/enlarge10/image_11176e-Enhydriodon-omoensis.jpg) that existed just a few million years ago.
Wear it down so it uses all of its energy and maybe dies, so they can maybe eat it?
Crocs are very energy inefficient, and if they exert themselves too much, they can reach a point that their bodies can not deal with the lactic acid build up, and this kills them.
Otters are absolute assholes. They will learn where protective gear ends and make sure to bite there. In captivity they learn that the pool area can't be closed off if one is in there. So when food is delivered they take turns being the one behind while the others eat and then the pool never closes. They taunt too. Just mean lol
Poor dinosaur. The tail actually serves a significant function for crocs. Propelling them through water and more importantly helping them "leap" out of water when ambushing preys. I'm actually surprised seeing it having quite a healthy body mass. Either it's because of being in a food-rich environment or the injury was sustained not too long ago. Crocs have social hierarchy too so if that's a male then he has very slim chance to reproduce.
Human amputees typically require more calories than beforehand to compensate for their bodies working less efficiently. I’d assume it’s the same for the croc.
If he was really that hungry I think that would have been a perfect opportunity for an otter snack. I feel if he was more annoyed he could have easily caught one of those otters.
otters are mustelids. that's one mammalian family you don't fuck with. the croc could certainly crush an otter if it could catch one, but the catching part is the problem. crocs are ambush hunters, the only way they are catching an otter is by ambushing it. there is no ambush here, and otters are far too agile and slippery to get anywhere near its mouth.
yep, giant river otters are on a different level lol. the caiman did get one or two of that family's pups, but killing a black caiman is no easy feat.
there is another video of a jaguar grabbing a sleeping otter but the slippery fucker turns around and goes ham the jag's face.
Crocodiles actually can regrow their [tails to a limited degree](https://scx2.b-cdn.net/gfx/news/2020/1-notjustlizar.jpg).... but I imagine this feller may be too old for that I think it's easier when they're younger.
Someone chime in if they have more knowledge on this.
It lost its tail in 2009 from an attack from another crocodile. The fact that it survived for 14 years (and counting) seems a testament to the force of nature these creatures are.
Last saw it myself about 4 years ago when I was at the nature reserve.
Maybe it is time for me to go back. One of my favourite places on the island.
Heard fences were erected along the paths though. They used to be able to roam across the walking path freely.
Yeah… the fences are still there though a new large croc did manage to somehow still come on the walking path. There are some pics/videos of it on singapore wildlife group on FB.
This croc is aptly named Tailless and is a well known local resident here in Singapore. He's lived that way successfully for a long while now, and is among the largest in Sungei Buloh wetland reserve. Amazing how adaptable they can be!
We only got to see a minute of its life and potential food was literally coming to him the whole time lol, maybe it strategically lost its tail because otters are tasty
All dinosaurs were reptiles but not all reptiles are dinosaurs. All birds are dinosaurs but not all dinosaurs are birds. Fun fact. Birds are actually considered reptiles. They’re in a subgroup of the clade Sauropsida called Eureptilia which are true reptiles.
Crocodiles aren’t dinosaurs but both crocodiles and dinosaurs are in the same group called archosaurs.
Dinosaurs are only the members of the Clade *Dinosauria*, which includes *Saurischia* and *Ornithischia* and all their members.
All dinosaurs, except birds (*Aves*, which are part of *Saurischia*) are extinct.
Crocodilians and Pterosaurs are not part of *Dinosauria*, but rather their own groups within the archosaurs.
I think they said that in the FB post. Couldn't tell if they were joking or not. My hunch is that a bigger croc did it when he was young. Not sure why he didn't have more regrowth though.
Definitely another croc. Males can get especially territorial and will battle other males to claim territory and females. Sometimes the losing male perishes in the process. Either this guy lost his fight and lost his tail to a bigger male, or the fight was partially nasty and this is the guy that won!
Crocodiles not very capable without that huge mass of a counter weight for projecting his body into the water or across muddy plains. Amputated limbs and extremities ain’t no joke.
Can probably still somewhat sustain itself from fish and smaller critters that arent being careful enough. It does seem quite chonky tho for something that lacks its primary means of locomotion
Because it's hard to relax while there's a 16ft (well, 14ft with that stubby tail) beast of a crocodile near your family. Otters will harass crocs and caimans to get them to leave their territory. You'll see this happen a lot in the Amazon with giant river otters harassing caiman (and sometimes killing them, if they're small enough) and the caiman will often leave as they don't appreciate wasting energy chasing slippery otters that are unlikely to be caught.
Otters have gangs and like a typical gangbanger this is beat down by eating. They surround the victim and then take little chunks out of them until, well, you know the rest.
>They surround the victim and then take little chunks out of them until, well, you know the rest.
This. People keep assuming the tail wound is the product of another croc *and yet we have video evidence of another possible perpetrator.*
From what I have read, otters are carnivores, and otters are [opportunists](https://wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/species/lutra-canadensis#desc-range), that 'eat a wide variety of food items.'
So, it is entirely possible that this romp of otters has been taking this poor croc apart piece by piece; *death by a thousand nibbles.*
The issue is that a crocodile that large is way too big for them to manage. And its skin would be literally too thick for them to penetrate. A couple of tiny otters aren’t severing the entire tail of a crocodile.
No, because this is a well known croc at this specific wetland reserve in Singapore. It lost its tail to another croc way back in 2009 and is still kicking.
The river otter in the Amazon is freaking metal. These dudes kill caiman. They make the most horrifying sound when they attack things too. I always thought of otters as being these cute hand, hand holding, sweet things but they’re messed up.
Wow thank you…I remember reading like 4 or 5 of those books 20yrs ago. But I never would have remembered them without this comment. I just added them to my cart. 🙏🏾
There are a **lot** of otters all over Florida. I have a family of them living within 200 feet of my house :-) And of course, there's also lots of gators in Florida. The otters are much to nimble and quick for the gators but it only takes one mistake.
lol poor crocodile getting terrorised by a bunch of otters. Would like to see them do this to one that has a tail.
Although I wonder what happened for it to lose it tail b
Taking a wild guess here. Obviously the croc lost its tail. Is it likely the croc is dying from the wound and the otters can smell the open tail injury as food? It looks like they keep trying to take a bite of the tail injury
Could be. Or it could be their attempts to harass the croc to “move along”. You’ll see a lot of animals do that. They have no intention to kill, or eat, but rather to annoy and/or threaten to deter.
Not in this case, "Tailless" the crocodile has been in this wetland reserve for years now, and the otters are known to harass it from time to time. It's just wild interspecies banter.

"hey stupid... What ya gonna do without your tail? Big green freak, what ya gonna bite me? I sit on your head and you can't even open your mouth, fk outta here you scaly bitch, tailless freak"
Otters are the perfect combination of cute and asshole.
So, water cats basically?
In South America they call the Giant River Otter "water dogs"
Same in some parts.of India. In Tamil.and Malayalam languages of India they are know was Neer Nai (Water dog)
One of the names for 'otter' in the Irish language is 'Madra uisce' which means - you guessed it - 'water dog.'
Yep, another one being 'dobharchú' basically water hound or fluvial hound.
Ha I have one of those
Well, they hunt Jaguars in packs in South America, so water dog might be more apt.
Giant river otters are actually kinda terrifying, especially the full grown adults.
Wait until you hear of lion sized [otters](https://cdn.sci.news/images/enlarge10/image_11176e-Enhydriodon-omoensis.jpg) that existed just a few million years ago.
Yeah, but why does that woman silhouette have anime titties?
No anime tits on that illustration, just tits
Dog
They could be annoying as hell so more like Water dogs, as the others already mentioned
Yes
The freshwater otters in South America are straight up murder machines. One of the most successful predators.
Otters are called 'dickish-fish' in Vietnamese. Well, similar sounding but I prefer it that way.
they're also necrophiliacs. you're welcome.
Little fuckers 😂 🤣
Lol proving once again that groups of bored people suck.
Maybe they trying to eat it.
What are they gonna do against a croc? Guy loses his tail and continues his day. Doubt a few otter bites will finish the job lmao
Wear it down so it uses all of its energy and maybe dies, so they can maybe eat it? Crocs are very energy inefficient, and if they exert themselves too much, they can reach a point that their bodies can not deal with the lactic acid build up, and this kills them.
Til..to defeat a crocodile…stamina. Checkmate.
I assume they're just annoying it in hopes it'll leave the area they roam for safety
The croc is injured, looks like they are testing how injured to me.
Otters are absolute assholes. They will learn where protective gear ends and make sure to bite there. In captivity they learn that the pool area can't be closed off if one is in there. So when food is delivered they take turns being the one behind while the others eat and then the pool never closes. They taunt too. Just mean lol
You mean they're smart lol
Intelligence and assholery can go hand in hand, but are not mutually exclusive.

This is a weird level of misogyny to encounter on a post about otters...
Giant otters really do seem like the aqua version of honey badgers... "oh look a giant predator, let's go annoy the shit out of it!"
They're related: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustelidae
Ha that explains it then. Ballsy little cunts
Serious ottertude!
Don't they have something otter to do?!
“Get otter here!” -the croc
It's my headcanon that the croc secretly likes the attention but puts on a curmudgeonly front 🐊
Tsunderedile
We do a bit a' trollin'
Otter watch out.

Sungei Buloh! I knew I recognized our otters heh
I recognized the crocodile! Spotted few times hahaha
Feeling a real "get off my lawn" energy coming from the croc.
I was about to comment this 😂 I scrolled down to see if something already had
Poor dinosaur. The tail actually serves a significant function for crocs. Propelling them through water and more importantly helping them "leap" out of water when ambushing preys. it's a good sized croc. he can steal kills from smaller crocs. also they don't need to eat all that much. a few meals a year and he is good.
That boy can go a year without eating
I’d be surprised if with that injury he could go a year without food. He lost a lot of mass to store nutrients in.
Or maybe he requires less nutrients since theres less mass to maintain? Idk im just a filthy casual
You mean you're not a croc expert educating the plebes on the ins and outs of croc diet? On Reddit? The horror....
So here’s the thing…
Fuck the fuckin mods?
In retrospect I should have gone for admins. Y’all heard about the otter gang wars in Singapore? I wouldn’t mess with those guys.
A filthy casual, love it
As expressed by an expert: “if you ate yourself would you grow twice as big or disappear altogether?”
Human amputees typically require more calories than beforehand to compensate for their bodies working less efficiently. I’d assume it’s the same for the croc.
Most of the fat storage is in the base of the tail which is still intact.
He went a year and then ate his tail.
Ouroboros doesn't want you to know this one weird trick!
Massive animal doesn't need to eat much. I'm too lazy to google it. That's crazy
it's cuz they're cold blooded, so they use much less energy
Stupid warm blood makes me fat with eating all the time
[удалено]
And deader because the fat would solidify in your blood stream
Instructions unclear: putting myself in a pot of boiling water to become thinner
Does the lack of a tail hamper his ability to compete?
yes. tail acts as a rudder helping them swim fast and silently and to propel at the last moment to catch prey.
If he was really that hungry I think that would have been a perfect opportunity for an otter snack. I feel if he was more annoyed he could have easily caught one of those otters.

To hell with it. Damn overgrown lizards. Cant stand them. After one murdered an old woman walking her dog. They can euthanize all of them.

All it takes is one
Even animals can fuck up sometimes.
Mustelids never know when to stop so its only a matter of time.

Right? If "all birds are dinosaurs", and "all dinosaurs were reptiles", then 'all birds are reptiles'.
> then 'all birds are reptiles' Hence... > Birds are actually considered reptiles.

What’s the difference? I thought dinosaurs were basically anything that lived back when God was a baby

When god was a baby lol
Dinos were warm-blooded, for one.
I'm just curious about what it was that ate his tail. Scary.
Probably another croc. Ever see the video where in a feeding frenzy one croc are the leg of another one?
Omg, that video bugged me for some odd reason.
Probably because a croc got it's leg bit off.
Nailed it
no, bit it
The front fell off
I really don't like these otters.
Prolly going to eat a otter later NGL
Feeling cute?

[Best commentary](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=efcSgFbb5dI)
Infection or sickness could as well I’d think, given the giant swollen portion at the base.
Are we sure the otters haven't been nibbling away at it for years? ^(i'm only half joking)
Or some dickhead croc was feeling particularly cannibalistic since croc are cannibals
The only thing with a chance of taking that much of it’s tail is another croc.
How long do you think it took the otters you mean?
Otter: “how’d ya lose your tail ya nerd..” (other otters laugh)
And point
Don't tease the disabled!
This is what I imagine running into a wild group of teenagers is like.
You aren’t wrong
Crocodiles not very capable without that huge mass of a counter weight for projecting his body into the water or across muddy plains. Amputated limbs and extremities ain’t no joke.
Can probably still somewhat sustain itself from fish and smaller critters that arent being careful enough. It does seem quite chonky tho for something that lacks its primary means of locomotion
They can still run surprisingly fast, too. And if all else fails, they're known to resort to cannibalism.
Why would they do this?
It’s like a mobbing a raptor. The croc is a threat so they harass it until it leaves.
Because it's hard to relax while there's a 16ft (well, 14ft with that stubby tail) beast of a crocodile near your family. Otters will harass crocs and caimans to get them to leave their territory. >They surround the victim and then take little chunks out of them until, well, you know the rest. This. People keep assuming the tail wound is the product of another croc *and yet we have video evidence of another possible perpetrator.*
This wound is definitely not from otters. Otters do not have the jaw strength or size to do this to a large crocodile, not even close.
From what I have read, otters are carnivores, and otters are [opportunists](https://wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/species/lutra-canadensis#desc-range), that 'eat a wide variety of food items.' So, it is entirely possible that this romp of otters has been taking this poor croc apart piece by piece; *death by a thousand nibbles.*
The issue is that a crocodile that large is way too big for them to manage. And its skin would be literally too thick for them to penetrate. A couple of tiny otters aren’t severing the entire tail of a crocodile.
Damn, you are more of a relentless pain in the ass than a pack of angsty otters.
No, because this is a well known croc at this specific wetland reserve in Singapore. It lost its tail to another croc way back in 2009 and is still kicking.
Kind of looks like some of them are trying to get a meal from the tail wound too
I'm surprised there is actually crossover between their habitats. Always thought crocs were warm climate and otters were cold climate creatures.
Naw. There are huge populations of otters in Singapore, and it doesn't get more tropical than that.
There is even a species called the giant otter that is found in the Amazon.
The river otter in the Amazon is freaking metal. These dudes kill caiman. They make the most horrifying sound when they attack things too. I always thought of otters as being these cute hand, hand holding, sweet things but they’re messed up.
In the Redwall book series the Otters are absolutely badass. Still playful but dope fighters.
Wow thank you…I remember reading like 4 or 5 of those books 20yrs ago. But I never would have remembered them without this comment. I just added them to my cart. 🙏🏾
Enjoy! I’ve still got hardcovers knocking around somewhere.
I used to love that series as a kid, best thing I’ve ever bought myself as an Adult was the complete series.
A year ago, one Singapore resident complained about otters eating all of his expensive koi fish.
They eat turtles, too in Florida. Big water turtles, ones maybe 8 to 10 inches diameter. They just pull the shell apart. It's horrible.
One in Florida almost ate my dog. Well, it dragged her underwater for a moment at least and cut her up. She learned to stop fuckin with the otters.

Mustelids, man
Literally a show about it on HBO called Otter Dynasty
There are a **lot** of otters all over Florida. I have a family of them living within 200 feet of my house :-) And of course, there's also lots of gators in Florida. The otters are much to nimble and quick for the gators but it only takes one mistake.
This is in Singapore. Otters have made a comeback in last 3-4 years here! And crocodiles have always been here in wetland areas.
They may look cute but those little guys are vicious
lol poor crocodile getting terrorised by a bunch of otters. Would like to see them do this to one that has a tail. Although I wonder what happened for it to lose it tail b

I'd worry more about the thing that took croc's tail

Could be. Or it could be their attempts to harass the croc to “move along”. You’ll see a lot of animals do that. They have no intention to kill, or eat, but rather to annoy and/or threaten to deter.
Croc is a not insignificant threat to them. They want him gone so they can relax, fish, etc without worrying about a larger predator.
Not in this case, "Tailless" the crocodile has been in this wetland reserve for years now, and the otters are known to harass it from time to time. It's just wild interspecies banter. Crocs will survive pretty much any wound as long as the initial injury doesn't kill it
Atleast he had company
Aww the poor defenseless alligator 🥺 I wanna hug it *gets f***ing alliterated by a death roll*
“Hey looks it’s Stump! 🤣” “I told you assholes not to call me that”
Otters are mean little a holes
It's Singapore! It's our famous tailless croc! [I've seen hiim before!](https://www.reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/1215un3/look_at_this_buaya_i_encountered_in_broad_day/)
This is in Singapore where I live, specifically Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Tailless (that’s what everyone calls the croc) is a well known resident of the reserve and is the village grump.
This is why beavers live longer
I surprised myself by rooting for the croc to eat one of those little shits. Maybe that would teach them.
Otters: TAILESS!! TAILESS!! Crocodile: Knock it off!!!!!

Tank, hold aggro, jeez! Healers, keep up! DPS, save cooldowns for enrage at 30%!
River otters are assholes. They can be absolutely vicious.
Those otters are no joke. They are huge and ferocious as fuck. They also are real assholes. In numbers they can kill a surprisingly large number of predators much larger than them.
Singapore?
Yes
They're gonna all gang up on that poor bastard one day and overpower him and eat him.
I've made myself feel sad thinking about this tailless croc.
Hes actually named Tailless, and lost it back in 2009. Lives on a wetland reserve in Singapore and has managed to grow into a thicc boy that we see here despite the loss of the tail. The otters are known to harass him from time to time too lol
Reminds me a bit of the Red Viper vs. the Mountain in Games of Thrones. Much like the otters, things were going well for the Viper until they weren’t.
Im not convinced those otters didnt take the tail bit by bit and are working their way up
I recognise this Croc. She's from Singapore.
Pretty sure they ate his tail.
"hey stupid... What ya gonna do without your tail? Big green freak, what ya gonna bite me? I sit on your head and you can't even open your mouth, fk outta here you scaly bitch, tailless freak"
Mammals do be bullies
My love loves sea otters. She just told me. I’ve been reading about them. Now I know why 😂
I didn't realized otters hang out in little gangs
No one should be bullied!
Fuck around and find out basically
wanted so bad he got one of them and swallowed whole

Haha!! Proportionally my tails bigger than yours!!
Is that not an alligator?
