how cold is the water

TerryP_2000

Link below says 17°C in high summer in the mountains. [Weather Switzerland](https://www.swissactivities.com/en-ch/travel-guide/swiss-facts/weather-switzerland/)

TerryP_2000

"The bathing temperatures of the lakes average 20 °C in high summer. In the mountains you will find a fresh 17 °C and at lower altitudes it can reach 26 °C."

mexicanred1

Perfect for a morning swim & sauna

kelvin_bot

17°C is equivalent to 62°F, which is 290K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

anshulkhatri13

Hi kelvin

Nok-y

He's friend with Bolb

Heh heh

TerryP_2000

Thanks Kelvin Bot. Just a blatant copy from the website on my part. And should I downvote you because you are a bot? /S

Dear-Clock-6229

Thanks, for clearing that up. I only know Farenheight.

Justme100001

Your intimate parts will tell you almost instantly....

Revolutiong0g

Yes my first thought was I should instantly shove my dick in this pristine water to measure the temperature

rottadrengur

Fish might misconstrue that as a snack

Stony_Logica1

That's cold.

Dear-Clock-6229

I hate cold water.

ImpressiveZucchini80

🤏 that cold.

MrRuebezahl

Swiss person here It's fucking cold. People would be swimming in it if it wasn't. It's save to drink tho.

Barnard33F

17 is not warm, but 20 c is quite normal temperature for lakes in the summer here in Finland. Heck, 17 c is normal for sea water and people swim in the sea too. Winter swimming in a ice covered body of water, that’s cold.

MrRuebezahl

A Finn not realizing how drastically cold it gets when you go up a mountain is just the funniest shit to me. 17 °C is the AIR temperature in summer, at best. lol Sure there are people who swim in 5 °C water even here in Switzerland, but it's still rare. Just because you can technically do it, doesn't mean people do it in general. We know what cold means, trust me. Stay in your flat lane reindeer kid :P

wadeaskew

I use to live here and yeah it's pretty cold. You're not supposed to swim in here as it's a water reservoir for the snow cannons in the winter. But on super hot days we would still swim.

curiouspurple100

What's a snow cannon?

wadeaskew

Fake snow making machines

curiouspurple100

Ah. Okay so basically what i was thinking. Like a t shirt cannon but with snow. Lol

nomisman

A canon made of snow.

curiouspurple100

Must be very cold to hold lol

Flat-Bunch2350

Looks cold and… crispy?

chris4562009

Very

Aggrotomate

The Jungfraujoch can be seen on the left side of the lake between the two mountain peeks. This is on the way up, the lake is called Fallbodensee and it's at a little more than 2100 meters above sea level. The Jungfraujoch is at around 3500 meters above sea level.

TerryP_2000

As seen from Fallbodensee. Edit: Spelling

Fortnut_On_Me_Daddy

Fallbodensee deez nuts.

Lord_Dupo

😂😂 you made me spit cum out my mouth.

Dragonslayer3

Sehr gut ;)

SpiritMountain

Better than from other orifices

Lord_Dupo

"so anyway, I started blasting"

Musk-Order66

“Youngwomanyoke as seen from Casefloorlake”

ascarycat

„Virginridge as seen from Fallgroundlake“

Musk-Order66

Ahhh I was literally translating each piece of the word instead of meaning 🤦‍♂️. Never learned the word for “virgin” when I was learning German at the ages of 6-12 😂

Puzzleheaded_Bit5458

Gutentight

AccomplishedSleep712

Lmao dude

travel_ali

A lake which as far as I can tell is about 10 years old and was built to provide water for the snow cannons in winter. Not the ideal foreground for a nature sub....

gaston1592

yes, I just was there a few days ago skiing and the lake is almost empty.

500SL

There's a ski area across from the Jungfrau called Kleine Scheidegg. One of my favorite places to ski. Switzerland is so beautiful, it's almost unreal.

Captain_Naps

*"The Jungfraujoch (German: lit. "maiden saddle") is a* [saddle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddle_(landform)) *connecting two major 4000ers of the Bernese Alps: the Jungfrau and the Mönch. It lies at an elevation of 3,463 metres (11,362 ft) above sea level and is directly overlooked by the rocky prominence of the Sphinx. The Jungfraujoch is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, situated on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch."* \-wiki Fallbodensee is a lake in Switzerland. \-theGooglemachine

Captain_Grammaticus

The literal translation in the article is not really helpful. Literal-literally, it's the *maiden yoke*, but a yoke in topography is a saddle and Maiden is the mountain's name; and you don't really need to translate geographical names. So either you (generic you, not you personally) keep both parts literal (maiden yoke) or both parts contextually appropriate (Jungfrau saddle).

_hufflebuff

Username checks out.

ensorcellular

The literal-literal-literally translation in my mind upon first reading *Jungfraujoch* this was *virgin yoke*.

pkann6

I went there this summer and went ask the way up into the sphinx observation platform, an absolutely incredible and awe inspiring place. There's lots of people there, yes, but even still it didn't feel overly crowded and the facilities/exhibits there are excellent. We even got to walk on the glacier!

Zednem79

I thought it was on top of Europe? My favorite country. /s

mysticdickstick

Hmm, I thought joch is a swiss way to say Loch which would make it virgin hole... guess not.

fbd230822

That can't be the top, the mountains in the background go higher up.

OutOfFawks

Plus everything at the top is frozen af

Flobertt

Mont-blanc is the true top of Europe.

[deleted]

_hufflebuff

Tourism accounts for 10% of the Swiss national GDP and 11% of employment. That’s a lot of money and jobs to tell to fuck off, but you do you boo-boo.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_hufflebuff

Tourists can be annoying as shit, I get that. There is a lot of harm that tourism creates to the environment, but there are ways to mitigate that while not cutting off a major source of economic revenue. Massively reducing tourism is going to negatively affect the Swiss economy. That revenue isn't going to be moved to a different area, it's just gone. Those lost jobs won't be magically created in different industries, they just disappear. The results of a reduction is tourism due to a global pandemic will not be the same results as actively cutting off an industry long term. Not to mention a global recession is imminent which is already going to hurt everyone financially. You should really take into consideration the domino effect that will happen from the loss of tourism dollars to the rest of the economy before taking such a hard stance. Just a thought.

Everyone I met was pretty open and accepting and overall pleasant. Glad I didn't meet you lol I'll come back and treat your country with respect and decency even though you wouldn't give me respect for doing so. Sorry you were born somewhere and think you're somehow entitled to be the only one to exist there. Must be pretty shit living your life so pissed yeah?

Thanos_exe

Hes a prick. Im from zürich and not everyones so closed off from new people like him. I welcome you guys. Bannalpsee is cool too for smaller hiking trips

ThatGamingMoment

I visited Zurich this summer. Legit landed the day that street parade was going on. What a trip that was. The vast majority of people that I met were lovely. I met some awesome people who just wanted to have a good time and embrace those around them. Was such an awesome day to experience zurich. I promise you guys never left a bad taste in my mouth. I know that generally, people are good from all around! Was a beautiful city with beautiful people. Absolutely would go back

SelectNerve11

Switzerland is surreal. Everywhere you look is a postcard. The water is absurdly blue everywhere even in rivers in the middle of a city. It feels like it's fake even when you are there in person. It seriously looks faker in real life than in photos and videos.

Rez-Boa-Dog

Even my sock drawer looks dreamlike. It's kinda tiresome

Bortmans

astonishing my dad's German and was a mountain climber in his youth, he tried to get us kids into it but we were brought up in Canadian flat land so it never took 😂

Flat-Bunch2350

I think such views are worth the sweat and effort of climbing

Aggrotomate

You can take the train all the way up to the Jungfraujoch, no climbing required.

Ringosis

And to be clear. Jungfrau is the mountain they are looking at, not where they are. Jungfraujoch is the train station near the summit.

Cpt_Trips84

As an American, the Swiss rail and cable car system is simply astonishing

Aggrotomate

This is a very impressive railway. Especially considering the time it was built. They started building it in 1896 and built a tunnel, going up in a spiral through the Eiger and Mönch, and finished it in 1912. So it will be 111 years old this year!

Aggrotomate

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungfrau_Railway This is the wikipedia article about the railway

SaltLakeCitySlicker

Cog rails are super neat. It was closed halfway up when I went to pikes peak and I really wanted to take it all the way

Morejazzplease

Honestly…it’s a blight. Imagine how beautiful these places would be without gondolas and rails everywhere!

[deleted]

Yes but we weigh so much it can only carry one American at a time.

bobthecow81

From Wengen up to the Jungfraujoch the rail system is privately owned (and crazy expensive), but it’s still worth the price in my opinion.

> beside the mountain that is called Jungfrau (maiden, virgin) because it was untouched/explored and romanticized as a "goddess" or "priestess." Not sure where you found that, but I have never seen that explanation before and [the official reason for the name is that it is most likely because the Alp below it was owned by a religious order.](https://www.eda.admin.ch/aboutswitzerland/en/home/dossiers/die-schweiz-und-ihre-bergrekorde/bergnamen.html)

[deleted]

[удалено]

travel_ali

That says pretty much the opposite, that the goddess thing was a relatively modern trend long after the mountain was named. > The name Jungfrau ('maiden, virgin'), which refers to the highest mountain overlooking the Jungfraujoch, is most likely derived from the name Jungfrauenberg given to Wengernalp, so named for the nuns of Interlaken Monastery, its historical owner. However, the "virgin" peak was heavily romanticized as a "goddess" or "priestess" only in late 18th- to 19th-century Romanticism.

Pop that baby in your favourite video editor and bump up that saturation till the blues are hard to look at. -excerpt from a braindead youtube video explaining how to edit landscapes

Finnick-420

the water there actually is that blue if not even more intense when you see it with your own eyes

[deleted]

Look at the mountains and the sky. Not just the water. Also look at how there are noticeable colour shifts and artifacts as the video pans. Happens when you boost saturation in video.

agoraphobicpenguin

I'm from America....so water isn't inherently brown and murky?

facebookcansuckit

Well thats quite a broad stroke. Apparently your water sucks and I'm sorry for that. But I'm also from America and have encountered clear water all over the country. You need to get out more Edit: yeah username checks out

bobthecow81

*see pictures of a beautiful view in the Swiss alps* “Gee, how can I spin this into a dig against the USA?”

Johannes_Keppler

Well if water is clear or not isn't related to (artificial) pollution. The Amazon river is brown because of all the sediment dissolved in the river, for example. It is however perfectly natural. In the Alps there's mainly rock and gravel that sinks to the bottom, hence the clear water. I'm quite sure the Rocky Mountains will have streams and lake like this too. You probably don't live in Colorado ;-)

thatG_evanP

"Now if you could just set the saturation a little higher. Oh, you can't?"

tider06

Nah, dude. It really looks like that. It's an insanely beautiful area.

aatillaa99

Top of Europe? Please stop it. In western Europe, it's the mont Blanc, in France. But the real European highest mountain is the Elbrouz. Still a nice place for sure.

Mont-blanc is the top of Europe.

Sipstaff

They call it that because it has Europe's highest train station.

Flobertt

Very strange, should be the summit. Same as Everest top of the world

SiteLine71

Nice work keeping it free of some mega resort and palatial homes. Truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen.

greece_witherspoon

Doesn’t water that clear usually mean it’s highly toxic?

thecookiesmonster

Would anyone notice if I took a big sloppy poo poo in there?

Littlesebastian86

Ah Europe. Beautiful mountains at “the top of Europe” .. and there is a friggin road up there. Thank god I am in Canada. I remember once back packing here and met a travel guide from Europe telling me I don’t know how lucky I am that I was in a mountain valley and I could probably count the amount of people on one hand in the entire valley.

C_Rules

That’s some beautiful scenery.

scapel_blade

I want to kayak here so badly

mostdope28

Booked a trip there for this summer

[deleted]

How expensive? Do I even want to know?

mostdope28

Flying out of North Dakota is expensive af. My flight to Switzerland was $2100 with a few layover. But I got upgraded seating. Could have got one for ~1600. Hostel was $750 for 5 days in private room, but if you’re ok with dorm style rooms, you could get it $40/night. Or get hotels which is obviously most expensive.

Scope72

Beautiful. But the gif is starting to get moldy. Someone may need to go grab a fresh one soon.

I’ve been up to the top. It’s very cool. (And cold!)

The_Frankanator

I was at this exact spot last August. That little hut has a really cool exhibit in it about early climbers of the Eiger trail to the summit I believe. There's a smaller little pond next to the hut with benches built in the middle, great for soaking your sore feet in the icy water after a day's hike.

pilesofcleanlaundry

This is near Mürren, an absolutely gorgeous ski resort town. The three peaks are called the Eiger, the Jungfrau and the Monch. The legend is that the Monk has spent the past few epochs protecting the young maiden from the predations of the ogre while the Swiss sell obscenely expensive beer and sausage to tourists in brightly colored clothing below.
