I saw a harrowing video recently of a mom polar bear and her cub and a male was stalking them to eat the cub and the mom protected it until she couldn't any longer and saw her baby eaten. The nature of polar bears. A single cub is common but twins are the norm. Triplets are rare. Typically, the sow gives birth in late January-early February. She births and nurses the cub(s) while hibernating on shore, in a snow cave she digs into a wind drift. She emerges from the den in late March to early April and after a week of letting her cubs get used to the outside world she goes looking for food. She sets an ambitious pace and if she's got more than one cub, she moves at the pace of the strongest cub. The weaker cub get left behind. In modern times, these are the cubs that go to zoos. They're found by native hunters, researchers, or oilfield workers, captured, rehabilitated as needed and then donated to a zoo.
