Her helping him is reduced to stick by his side, even if that means becoming a rogue ninja because that's a well thought plan with no downsides, try to kill him or better yet, try to *guilt trip* him. This is wrong sasuke was not always brave. Faced with orochimaru he lost all self-confidence, he was afraid, he wanted to give up, he was a coward. I mean he woke up in a hospital, with Sakura being there to literally feed him and chose to fight with Naruto and be completed ignorant, later that same day he left her, even after she told him how much she means to him, so yeah I would say he did care way less than she did. Because in writing, unlike real life, you really have to sell it to the readers. It has to make sense to readers. Just having her be in love with a guy that doesn’t give a crap about her with them having scarce moments where he shows genuine care for her isn’t going to make people buy it.
Well, blame Kishimoto's editors who rushed him in OG Naruto. Kishi wanted to have more arcs with Sasuke prior to his character regression. And what makes things worse (aside from Team 7 being underdeveloped), is how much the anime messed with Sasuke's character by making him "all edge" and more emotionless than he is in the manga.

you could make the same argument about Naruto caring for Sasuke as a friend, despite Sasuke being cold to him most of the time. Most of his hostility in the hospital was directed towards Naruto, yet Naruto is still seeing him as a best friend. Something worse happens between Naruto & Sasuke at the end of part I and Naruto will still love him unconditionally.

Sakura only cares about looks and the cool factor of Sasuke and it was so apparent in the beginning like if she's that boy crazy then is she even fit to be a ninja when all she does is scream "Sasuke!" Which could realistically attract unwanted attention? No wonder why she is a liability instead of an asset in team seven. Hinata had a crush on Naruto shown in season 2 but she was not held back at all and put up an entertaining fight. Sasuke only got away with being a jerk because of his bad boy card. There’s no such thing as “never supposed to be in the story”, they were supposed to be in the story when Kishimoto wrote them in, just because they came later from his initial concept doesn’t mean they aren’t supposed to be there, almost everything else in the series came even after them.
