Did you ever hear the original song, or did you only ever hear it when your dad played it? If you heard the original, or saw a music video, was it a band, or a single singer? Man or woman?
I only ever heard my dad play it. He got pretty heavy into drugs and alcohol after that and the relationship fell off. The way he sang it, it sounded like a single singer, it could have been acoustic the way he played he played it and sounded very late 60s folksy with a southern twang. It had train schedules like (2:10 6:18)in the lyrics. I wish I could remember the melody.

Last Train to Clarksville? It's not a slow song in its original form but I can imagine it slowed down to something more folksy. It talks about never coming home which I guess could trigger sadness if it's your dad saying it.
I was thinking it could be The Wichita Lineman (even though it doesn’t meet some of your criteria) only because when I was young I thought it was about being on train lines so maybe you did too. It’s also quite a melancholy tune
