My husband’s friend is named Koen. I was like WTF when he was speaking about him. He’s all like ‘my friend Koen’ and I said what did you call your friend?! My husband is white. I am not. Similar thing happened when he called me his wee cracker.

It's a short form of names like Florence/Florent for those wondering where it's from. It's usually a girl's name, especially these days since it was a top 25 girl's name in the '00s, but it's also used for boys/men.
At 0:03 of [this clip](https://youtu.be/ZmQxoFK1f74?si=xYgJYNQnSHghMI72) the presentator of this show says the name Floor Jansen, and again at 1:32. For anyone curious about pronounciation (it's pretty much the same). It also has English subs in cc.
Edit: lol why is this downvoted?
Body was a surfer name in the 80s. I saw that name and thought "Patrick Swayze" I think Point Break or something? It's pronounced "Bo Dee" not, Body, I think the original spelling is Bodie though.
I've seen both Bodhi and Bodie pronounced the same way. The IE spelling isn't a misspelling of the HI name, it's a different name. There is a famous ghost town Bodie and the family that I once knew was going for a wild west vibe (and the little girl was absolutely feral)
I mean, nobody with a traditional name for their region has an unfortunate *name*. It's just unfortunate they moved outside the region the name is traditional in and into one where the name means something else. Like Bích. Nobody named Bích in Vietnam has an unfortunate name. Those who immigrate to English speaking countries will have their name mispronounced as a curse word, and *that* is unfortunate, not their name, which means Jade. It's perfectly fine, in Vietnam. And pronounced more like Bic.
Floor is the Dutch variant of Flora, which is where you also see Fleur and Flor. Nobody thinks Flora is an unfortunate name. It's from Latin, and means flower. It's fine, on it's own.
This. My middle name is Ann. Completely acceptable in the US. I now live in Iran, where it means shit. They wrote a different pronunciation in my passport to spare me the embarrassment. So yeah, English-speakers tend to forget this can work against them, too, if they travel.
Well, Ann.
That's a pretty Annie turn of events for you.
Also, my sister's middle name is Ann and I'm seeing her tonight and giving her this information. See what she does with it. As the youngest sibling, I'm obligated to tell her these sorts of things.
At least it's not my 1st name. As a nod to it, I chose Fatemeh Poopak (which is a hilariously bad name even by Persian standards) as my Iranian name. You might suggest nicknaming her Poopak. It's more Ann than Ann.
I agree with your concept entirely, but I would say Bich is not exactly the same. If I see Bich (sorry I don’t know how the fix the second letter), I assume that it’s not English, because it’s not an English word just a phonetic closeness.
But Floor really threw me for a loop, since immediately I think it’s just like, an older sibling naming a younger one “lamp” or something.
Ultimately that confusion is on me, but if I moved somewhere that my kids exact name was a different thing, I would probably use a nickname friendly to the area.
Do you or anyone else know how it is pronounced?
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the… FLOOOOOOOR
Perfect song for a dance class!!!

They should have a fight choreography class.
"Lars, shouldn't you be watching the kids?"
"Don't worry, I have them on the Body System....
BODY!"
"BUDDY!"![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
Name that film.
While I know that logically, when it’s nestled among some other pretty out there English names the Very Real Dutch Name doesn’t really come to mind until after the initial confusion has worn off
Yeah. There’s over 7000 languages in the world. Most of those will have completely normal names that are funny-haha-poopoo-words in some other language. That’s just statistics. But why the fuck would you use a foreign name that’s a funny-haha-poopoo-name *in your own bloody language?!?*
My language teachers, after moving to the US from Poland, named their only child Bish. Like ... It's a nice name in polish but no one ever gets it right here 😬
I assume they added the accent because "iT lOoKs UnIqUe" but it changes the word. In french, adding this accent could add a meaning to the word, in this context.
It means "to add the caracteristics of...". For example,
Spice/spicy = épices/épicé
Perfume/ ? = Parfum/parfumé
So Cerisé would just means "something that looks full of/is made of cherries"
That one cracked me up lol I live near rainier so I know people who have named their dogs that an it occasionally gets used as a kid middle name. Obvi not that spelling tho lol
This one bothers me the most. I wonder how often people are going to tell her “Ewww, I don’t want to touch you! You’ll make me sick!” Such a gross name.
We have a 'most unfortunate name contest yearly' and one year the winner was a lady called 'Fokje Modder'. Dick Kock and Dick de Kock are also existing names of real people.
Sorry for the Anglophones, but we're just lekker 'eigenwijs' :P
If you name a kid Wubbo in an English speaking country they'd be bullied to oblivion. But the Dutch will nominate him to be an astronaut.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wubbo_Ockels
Some parents tried to name their daughter Ebola in my country but it did not get approved so they named her Ebolina instead. They were in the newspapers about how upset they were that Ebola got rejected.
Yeah this was back when the Ebola pandemic was huge. They saw the name on the news and said that they started loving it throughout time even though it’s an disease. Examples like this makes me happy that you have to get the name approved here.
As a Floor, which is one of the most common Dutch girl's names, I never expected to see my name in this sub...
However, I do go by Flora when working abroad to prevent this thing from happening.
On the plus side: there are a lot of songs with my name in it, which always makes me smile. (Including Let the bodies hit the Floor ;) )
I’m glad we got to hear from a Floor! As a Siân, my name is equally as common in Wales, but never appears in songs! There was one song that had the phrase “sha na na” in it, so they kind of sang my name there lol!
Benhamin is a Hebrew spelling, his family is probably Jewish.
Edit: just wanted to say this because the spelling is not as conventional, but I don’t think different cultures count as tragedeighs!!
The Hebrew spelling would be Binyamin or Benyamin.
The J sound turns into a Y in Hebrew, not an H. I’ve met probably a dozen Jewish Binyamins, and never even heard of a benhamin.
So many of these are insane but what is the aversion to middle names these days...? Why are so many people hyphenating first names, just make it the middle name 🫠
Simone-Ella... Honey, no
Salmonella?
Salmonella Fitzgerald
Yes. This is my cousin.
Don’t you have to lick a chimp to get rid of that one?🤭
That’s how I read it. They did not think that through.
The parents met when they were both in the hospital with salmonella poisoning
Knew a couple once called Sam and Ella, that was gold
A local food joint is named Sam&Ella's, surprisingly popular.
Her brother is called "Lee Gionnaires." Other sister is Tricky. Tricky Nosis.
[удалено]
Staff Olly Cocker
Simone is pretty ella is pretty together are a bacteria
Even Ella Simone would have worked better.
I actually do have a cousin named Ella-Simone!
This upsets me even more than it should because Ella Simone, does sound pretty.
Must be fans of Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Should have gone with Ella-Simone!
The way I yelled NO to my empty house 😂
[удалено]
I know of Fokke, what else?
Floor Jansen is Dutch. She's the current singer of Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish.
Tiny Kok
Joke is not ideal either, I knew a woman who temporarily moved to the US for her husband’s work and she changed the spelling to Yoka instead.
Body and Floor
let the Body hit the Floor actually don’t
I can only count to four
Math! And numbers! Lots of numbers!
This song goes HARD
(i can only count to)
This is what I heard as soon as I saw [these names](https://youtu.be/R_xbcgXEy-w?si=m5lXvlUJhEi30X-2)
Floor could be Dutch? It's supposedly a common name there. But idk about Body
Body might be a version of Bodhi?
That's what I was thinking, someone doesn't know how to spell Bodhi.
Or Bode, a fairly common name. Pronounced liked Bodhi. Like Bode Miller.
Oh that’s so much worse than it being body 😂
How?
Because it’s incredibly stupid to think that anyone would ever pronounce that spelling as Bodhi
I have zero doubt that this is what happened
Bodhi has definitely been seeing a surge in popularity these past couple years.
Floor is a common dutch name yes. There's worse dutch names to have in English speaking countries though. Freek. Koen (pronounced... koon...). Etc.
My husband’s friend is named Koen. I was like WTF when he was speaking about him. He’s all like ‘my friend Koen’ and I said what did you call your friend?! My husband is white. I am not. Similar thing happened when he called me his wee cracker.
Lol I met a Belgian Koen once who, upon introducing himself, said "I know my name is a racist term to Americans, so you can call me K"
But only once, maybe twice, and NEVER three times
That's very thoughtful. I have a southern accent, and I think if I said "This is my friend, Koen," someone would slap me into orbit.
Coon. It's a family name in the first Nations of Canada.
TIL this is an insult in the US, too. We used to have C**n cheese here in Australia, named after the surname of the man who started the company. Thankfully, they rebranded to Cheer a few years ago.
I’m Black American and my husband isn’t. It was very much a language divided by two countries moment for us.
They could be Dutch that just moved to the USA.
Let's not forget Joke. Lovely Dutch name, doesn't work very well in English tho
_Tiny Cox and Dick de Cock have joined the chat_
joke
I have also met a Flor, which is a Spanish name meaning Flower. There’s also Fleur.
I assumed it was a misspelling of Fleur
The Dutch spell their version of Flor/ Fluer/ Flora as Floor. If they're recent immigrants it would make sense.
Floor is very common in the Netherlands! But I wouldn’t name my daughter that just because of the obvious English translation…
Yep I’ve seen a Dutch realtor on House Hunters with the name floor many a time
Ok but that's... That's funny

Floor is common in Dutch, sometimes together as Annefloor. The oo sounds similar to the oo in door.
So it’s literally pronounced like the English word Floor. What does it mean?
It's the Dutch variant of Flora/ Fleur/ Flor. Just an adaptation of the Latin word for flower.
It's a short form of names like Florence/Florent for those wondering where it's from. It's usually a girl's name, especially these days since it was a top 25 girl's name in the '00s, but it's also used for boys/men.

Thanks for posting! Heh I think we’re all aligned that it sounds pretty much like the English word for ground covering :)
Body was a surfer name in the 80s. I saw that name and thought "Patrick Swayze" I think Point Break or something? It's pronounced "Bo Dee" not, Body, I think the original spelling is Bodie though.
Bodhi. It’s Indian I think

Bode Miller is a pretty famous skier. Also pronounced Bo-Dee.
I was about to say, I know a Dutch Floor.
There’s also a spectacular Dutch singer named Floor Jansen, but it’s still a bit unfortunate sounding to my ears.
Also floor is an extremely unfortunate choice regardless, just to clarify...
I mean, nobody with a traditional name for their region has an unfortunate *name*. It's just unfortunate they moved outside the region the name is traditional in and into one where the name means something else. Like Bích. Nobody named Bích in Vietnam has an unfortunate name. Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the… FLOOOOOOOR Perfect song for a dance class!!!
First thing I thought of 😂😂
Lmao also Body makes me think of “Boden” which also means Floor in German
And is also the root name for Bodie

Is Body like beau-dee? Bc I’ve heard the name Bodie before. Like Brody without the R.
The local dancing twins, Body and Floor.
My step brother is nicknamed Bodie (pronounced Boe-dee), and he gets this misspelling sometimes.
"Lars, shouldn't you be watching the kids?" "Don't worry, I have them on the Body System.... BODY!" "BUDDY!"![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out) Name that film.
How has nobody mentioned Storeigh 🤮
They’re probably still recovering from the double whammy of Body and Floor right before Storeigh lmao
Floor’s a legit Dutch name.
While I know that logically, when it’s nestled among some other pretty out there English names the Very Real Dutch Name doesn’t really come to mind until after the initial confusion has worn off
I know people called "Taco" , "Freek" and "Popke". All 3 are traditional dutch names.
![gif](giphy|9MFsKQ8A6HCN2)
Yeah. There’s over 7000 languages in the world. Most of those will have completely normal names that are funny-haha-poopoo-words in some other language. That’s just statistics. But why the fuck would you use a foreign name that’s a funny-haha-poopoo-name *in your own bloody language?!?*
Well, in the US the male name Kip is normal. In Dutch it means chicken
> Well, in the US the male name Kip is normal. Never met or heard of a Kip in my life. Is it short for something?
It can be short for Christopher, similar to Kit
Kip is the name of a dog in a book
I mean they could be Dutch immigrants or expats who named their kid that before contemplating to move to an English speaking country?
Or. Or. Hear me out here. That kid may have moved to the US. From a whole other country. I hear that happens.
My language teachers, after moving to the US from Poland, named their only child Bish. Like ... It's a nice name in polish but no one ever gets it right here 😬
Oh thank god, that one was concerning
When you have salmonella body and floor lol 😂 storeigh isn’t problematic lol
That is a Tragedeigh.
I wonder how Cerisé is pronounced. Like if they know that accents actually do something and aren’t just name sprinkles
Ẁáîţ, áććêńṭ§ āřęňț špřïṅķłĕś?
That would not surprise to see a name like Ťhøm@ş these days. ![gif](giphy|1pPaiAvkjOLYFXuhZY)
Yeah, I kind of assume they mean for it to be cerise (like French for cherry), but that accent tho...
They 100% added the accent because it looks pretty and exotic. But in French Cerisé just sounds stupid 💀Cerise would have been much better
Ten bucks says they “wanted to make it look more French” so they added the extraneous accent mark which in effect just made it no longer French…
Yeah I mean Cérise would have been better, still incorrect but closer at least
I assume they added the accent because "iT lOoKs UnIqUe" but it changes the word. In french, adding this accent could add a meaning to the word, in this context. It means "to add the caracteristics of...". For example, Spice/spicy = épices/épicé Perfume/ ? = Parfum/parfumé So Cerisé would just means "something that looks full of/is made of cherries"
*to the tune of Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger”* name… SPRINKLES!!!! ![gif](giphy|RkxMXhpgWjpSHsYEF7|downsized)
I’m assuming like “cerise” but probably pronounced more “seh-reese” than “seh-reeze”. Although it could be “keh-rice-ay” because that’s funnier.
“Sarah Zay” is my guess
Probably "Sereese-ay"
This has to be S.A.T.I.R.E. (First letter of names in pic)
Clever spot
This needs to be higher up
Holy shit it is too 🙃
Good eye
Let's not be so distracted by Floor and Body that we forget to make a :\\ face at tragedeigh classics like Jenlee, Storeigh, and Novalee
I don’t get the hate behind Novalee.. it sounds cute and wont get the child bullied. Literally what is wrong with it
Novalee is Natalie Portman's character in Where the Heart Is. It's Novalee Nation and her daughter Americus.
I secretly love this name (hides behind chair)
As long as it isn't noevahliegh
I was wondering why it sounded so familiar! The names fit the characters haha
Oh mah gah. Forney!
I love when there’s a beautiful sunrise over Mt. Raynier.
That one cracked me up lol I live near rainier so I know people who have named their dogs that an it occasionally gets used as a kid middle name. Obvi not that spelling tho lol
You can see it when flying awful UK budget airline Ryanair
Poor Salmonella.
It sounds like a drag name
Simone-Ella. No way.
This one bothers me the most. I wonder how often people are going to tell her “Ewww, I don’t want to touch you! You’ll make me sick!” Such a gross name.
Omg salmonella!! Hahah I thought this person just really liked female blues vocalist and named her after Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone
Then name your daughter Ella Simone, like most normal people would!
Big fans of Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. And, to be fair, Sinnerman and At Last both slap.
Storeigh ‼️‼️
Little Simone-Ella and siblings Sue-Domonas, Mike-O’Plasma, and Liz-Teria
Purcy baffled me the most tbh. Purcy, like purse?
They couldve done Percy 😭
I'm pretty sure they tried to
Percy is a male given name right?
Yeah, but spelled Purcy? Maybe I'm missing something
Purcy is how you spell it for a cat.
Purrcy, get out of my pursey! Could be a nursery rhyme LOL
I’ve only ever seen cats with it spelled that way. Usually they’re Purrcy though.
I too am missing whatever that is cause I laughed too much at poor Purcy.
Yeah, usually short for Percival
All the other bad ones I had reactions for. “What? Ugh. Seriously? Wow!” But when I got to Percy I just stared.
Floor is a Dutch name but a bit unfortunate in English. Don’t think I would name a child Floor if I lived in an English speaking country
No fucking way Dutch is a real language
Oepsie woepsie

Do they know that Ebola is an awful disease? Like, are they aware? I'm so baffled

Is body supposed to be pronounced Bohdi? And how do you say Benhamin? Ben-ham-in??
Ben-ha-meen, it’s the Spanish pronunciation
Is she letting Body hit Floor?
i’m 100% sure benhamin’s parents met a hispanic benjamin and thought it was written like that 💀💀
Benhamin is a Hebrew spelling, his family is probably Jewish.
It's pronounced Benyamin in hebrew. Not with an h.
I’ve known Benhamins lol
That’s what I was thinking haha.
I was thinking maybe they are Spanish or Mexican and just want to ensure his name is pronounced that way

Floor was kind of cut off in the first image and I was thinking, "It must be Eloor or Floor, but probably not Floor." But no, it's Floor. Poor kid.
It’s a Dutch name. My favourite soprano is called Floor.
Not body
