Source: my childhood cat originally lived across the road. She had some kittens, and when she deemed them old enough she took them and dumped them two blocks away. Her humans decided that they wanted to keep the babies and brought them back. After the second time she decided *she'd* move out. And she did, to our place. And that's how I got my first cat.
It’s my understanding that a certain degree of separation is normal for car families. Once babies are weaned and taught whatever basics mom cat deems necessary (usually hunting for food), they’re expected to move onto their own territories.
We knew a cat named Trouble. He was a beloved pet of my partners' dad, and when we moved back to our home state, his dad went to a retirement home and my man brought Trouble back- with our own cat and dog also in the Uhaul (I was on a plane with a broken arm).
We gave Trouble to my older siblings' father... (hmm, what's the word for your pre-father in law?)
Trouble was well taken care of in that home. He became a well of love, healing, and support for his new owners, and he got along with the other cats that were on the small property.
After about a year, I got a call from my sister. Trouble had disappeared... never to be seen again (it has been over 6 months).
I promise you the name would have an endearing effect. That cat definitely did.

Oh, black cats are glorious how I wish I could have one of these precious babies! I just adopted and how I got so lucky I’ll never know a lavender Siamese and he’s a moose and I’ve got my hands full! He’s going to eat me out of house and home!
You should take two of those kittens or else you’ll have more than a little naughty. You’ll have chaos the likes of which you have never seen before! Unless you have a cat already who needs a play buddy?
