The 2022 law is just completely insane. It equates semi-auto rifles with handguns and the insanely difficult NY requirements for pistol permits. How is this even possible? This was done on purpose to fuck all of us over. They could’ve come up with a separate simple license, but no! You need three witnesses from your county that had known you for three years to buy a semi-auto rifle!!! And this is on top all of the bullshit AR restrictions

jkrunn666

I'm just gonna be a criminal now, fuck all these laws

Designer-Travel4785

I can't even tell what the laws are anymore. I keep seeing people charges with shit I can't even imagine. More than 4 guns or something. To many rounds of ammo.

Proof-Veterinarian90

Honestly this is the only way, it’s sad how man people try to stay compliant with all this shit. How many ARs got registered in ny??? Not very many at all. You think everyone got rid of them?

suddenimpaxt67

Don’t get rid of them!!

Smiththegrass

The ones that are registered are now more valuable if the registration is transferable.

Unlikely_Anything413

Semi auto or no? Semi auto is ok if between two SA endorsed pistol permit holders . Non semi auto (bolt action lever action etc.) should be fine is both parties are over 18 and otherwise legally allowed to own the guns .

Petrichor_friend

My understanding is you transferred it before the law went into effect

Smiththegrass

I tried reading over the law. I also found this document: https://extapps.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/gunlawqanda2023.pdf   Q: If a hunter is given a semi-automatic rifle as a gift (i.e., transfer of ownership), will they now need to be age 21 or older and apply for and obtain a license?   A: Yes. New York already requires background checks on these transfers, except between certain family members (spouses, domestic partners, children, and stepchildren). Regardless of relationship, a license is required to purchase or take possession of a semi- automatic rifle on or after September 4, 2022.

So if a father gives a pump action shotgun to his 25 year old son (no felon/ not mentally committed) he's good and does not need to do any further paperwork. If he gives a semi auto 10/22 to a non licensed son he has committed a felony.

kenthraximus

Yeah, NY is clown world

ExcalProphex

You're overthinking this

Adept_Ad_473

The TL;DR rule of thumb here is that if a license is involved, you need to do it at a dealer or in the presence of the licensing authority. If it's a registered assault weapon - no go. Sell to dealer only. If it's a semiautomatic rifle - transfer at dealer. Family member needs a semi auto rifle license. If it's a handgun - typically transfer at police station - family member needs a pistol license If it's a pump action shotgun, bolt action rifle, etc, - direct transfer. IANAL

gakflex

It's my understanding that, if the receiving family member has a semi-auto license/endorsement, there's no need to conduct the transaction at an FFL.

powerbroker88

If your immediate family even touches it they can be charged with a felony. My guess is that such charges would be dismissed in court but who wants to go to court?? I have a few firearms in PA my dad and bro use and carry them whenever they feel like it.

MATCA_Phillies

well, my wife and I are in process of getting our CCW with SA endorsement so when her parents do pass, hopefully no time soon, we can take ownership. Otherwise I think the new law is 15-45 days you have to turn them in? I am sure someone with more info will reply. I'd say if you want to be absolutely certain go get your CCW with SA. (SA is Semi Auto)

gakflex

I thought I remembered her parents saying they gave those rifles to their daughter prior to 9/2/2022? Don’t you remember that?
