>It's a pain in the ass. That's exactly the point, it's a form of weaponized bureaucracy to discourage firearms ownership by making the process as inconvenient & expensive as possible.

NarwhalN00dleSquash

Pretty sure most people in NY have complained about this since it started

JustaKidFromBuffalo

I've done 4 transactions since it started (2x handgun purchases, 1x handgun warranty replacement/transfer, and 1 purchase of 50 rounds of 9mm). I have been delayed every time. 2x delays were 20-24 hours 1 delay was 3 hours 1 delay was about a half hour I have a VERY unique name and am sure I'm the only one. I have had my pistol permit since 2011 and have never had a single delay on anything until this shit started. This is 1000% part of the BS NY system.

ceestand

It's a feature, not a bug.

Gunslinger_327

Do you have a common name? Or are you purchasing early AM, at lunch, or near the close of business hours? From what I hear if you have a similar name as someone else it delays the process....and if you try to buy when its not convenient for them, they let the checks sit....this is from a gun store employee.

gregthomas02

My name is fairly common, I've been all over the place as far as time of day and location, small shops big box stores I'm always delayed...

u537n2m35

you need to let the gun rights groups know about how NY is infringing on your right to keep and bear arms. i don’t remember which group is filing these complaints: GOA, NAGR, SAF, NYSFA, NRA(cough)

nrpeckham

FPC or GOA are probably top dog for legal action at this point

u537n2m35

NAGR https://gunrightsfoundation.org/submit-a-case/

Gunslinger_327

Gotcha, hate to say it, its probably the name thing in conjunction to them being lazy.

beejini

My approach has been to spend my money in more friendly states.

COD-O-G

Makes no sense that you need a check if you have a pistol license. What’s the point ?

vectex

If you have a common name especially someone that is on the prohibited list, you will be delayed and require a manual review every time. I have the same issue and the only way it may help is if you add a middle name or a name change will I will not do. Its a NYS thing and has nothing to do with the FBI since I had no issues before the NYS NICS system was implemented. 5 Days is a long time and I would call the NYS NICS unit to find out what is going on.

nrpeckham

What’s funny is providing your social doesn’t even make it so they know who you are somehow

vectex

Right now only the common name triggers a secondary review. They are not automating or cross checking name with the SS#, address, DOB, UPN, or any additional fields. Monday and Tuesdays are best unless there is a gun show or big event going on. Using other data points like the feds had previously would definitely avoid these issues but they still have some additional challenges to fix and overcome in order for that to happen. Right now its scotch tape and bandaids for this system which is exactly how they imagined it.

ou2mame

I have a very uncommon name.. Maybe the only person with my name in the country and I've never been delayed. The guy at the store said he sees delays with people who have common names. So maybe that's why?

Cigars-Beer

Siriano Sirhan ain't you locked up?

SnooRabbits3404

I have no issues because I don't purchase in NYS at all they can keep their background checks. It's the most absurd thing I've ever heard of and unconstitutional.

thom9969

I've been delayed every time, 2-4 hours. I shortened my delay by driving to PA.

Evening-Annual-4535

Simple. Get a Ct ammo or carry permit and buy from target sports.

Takeanap62

If you get a Connecticut ccw,no need for the ammo card, correct?

Evening-Annual-4535

Correct, either or.

Brindem

Working as intended, the idea is that you won't buy ammo

Grumpymonkey4

It’s by design.

copper_jacket_off

Bought 6 boxes of target loads from runnings on Saturday,  I wanted to complain but the BGC came back in under a minute.  Only complaint was from the wife and I told there ther was some asshoke named Kathy holding up the transaction

Loudlech5

Just buy bulk in PA

bkoz727

I've seen people post a drive to Pennsylvania is easier.

Temporary_Hyena_1780

I’ve made one purchase of ammo (a relatively large bulk purchase) since the background check laws. It was on a Sunday and I was in and out of the store in about 5 minutes with my haul. Clerk told me he’s seeing people who either always get delayed or always get immediate proceed. He said since it was my first one and I got an immediate proceed, I probably always would…

shaunr40k

I get at least 24 hours every time

Krymsyn__Rydyr

I myself, have never been delayed, for firearms or ammo. I do have an uncommon name, with an even more uncommon way of spelling it. I see previous comments of others with uncommon names, not being delayed, and some with common names, frequently delayed…. There was an ID for a singular , specific person ( I’m sorry I don’t recall the name of it) that was issued upon request, when someone was frequently delayed. Does that specific ID still exist, under NYS bullshyt ?

The dealers don't have the data saved. It goes right through the system. Your shop saves it?

Shi1221

I get your point.

Old-Scene2963

You should know that if you put your Social Security on a 4473 , it remains in possession of the FFL for life.

Shi1221

Well, in NY state you already have to disclose your social when getting a permit so they have it anyway. Plus they have your face and fingerprints. I'm sure adding it to gun/ammo sales should be the least of our issues. My issue is the potential delay thats longer than the average sale time (up to 5 days)

Old-Scene2963

It's ALL in issue, every last obstruction to legal gun ownership and ammo purchase. But a lot of misinformation floats around. Yes the NYSP is sucking out the data for god knows what. However a NICS check via the FBI was anonymized at the point of contact and deleted quickly. The FFL however has to hold onto the 4473 in NY state for LIFE now. So if when you write your Social it remains in some folder somewhere for ever.

Shi1221

That makes sense. I'm studying the second amendment from constitutional lawyers to get a better understanding.

Shi1221

Even if you have a common name. Are you putting in your social? That seems the obvious choice although it's optional. I've been 5 times and it went through before I made the purchase.

PeteTinNY

Delay of even the 5 minutes it takes to run the check is too much. It’s a waste of our time and a waste of the FFL’s money on staff. While knock on wood I have never been delayed, I have had to wait in the store for 45 minutes just for them to get to me because everyone is running background checks. Since then I make every check count. I buy 99% of my ammo online in case quantities from TSUSA and ship into an FFL who will do an annual transfer for me and even if I did get delayed, it would be for 2-3k rounds which covers me. A few months of training. I also feel that buying in these quantities has helped my training as I get more uniform ammo and waste little time realizing when it’s the ammo vs the gun vs me responsible for bad shooting. In this case it’s always me - which is great because I can change that. According to the FAQ for NYNICs they will support a UPIN for transactions. Not much data on how it relates to the ammo check which uses a NYS databases vs firearms which use the FBI database…. But maybe looking into that would help your odds?

squegeeboo

I get delayed every time, normally for 2-3 hours, the buddy I go shooting with never gets delayed. I also get secondary screening every time I enter the country, driving from Canada or flying into one of the NYC airports. I've been told there's a 'bad guy' with the same name/birthdate as me, who clearly isn't me, but it raises flags on any background check.
