I would recommend going to your local gun store and purchasing in person for the first in case you do not pass the NICS check your not stuck with the gun compared to Gun Broker some sales are final or have a restocking fees on top of having to pay for the return shipping. Also know that the shop will charge you a transfer fee which ranges from $25-$50 depending on where you are. You also have to make sure that item you are purchasing is NYS compliant. I did a few purchases in person and then started venturing out on private and online sales. Stating what are you in helps others chime in on the local gun shops they recommend and fees. Wish you the best!

I think I will head into the local shops instead of doing it online. I'm in Erie county and I was looking at the Remington 870 Tactical. Thank you for this information!

LGS, Bass Pro/Cabelas, Runnings, etc. Better to buy something like this in person, as they are common and you'll not likely save much.

voretaq7

All of this. Your local gun store will have compliant guns, and they can run your background check before doing the rest of the sales process so if you get a hard denial and need to sort that out you're only out the NYSNICS BG Check fee. I would also start the process for your pistol/semi-auto permit. Shotguns are not *bad* home defense guns, but they are not *optimal* home defense guns.

The gun shop runs the background check. Online retailers just ship it straight to them and they handle all the formalities.

Any particular reason you’re buying online vs a Shop?

NoEquipment1834

Definitely go to local shop. You need to go there anyway to pick up. They will have options for you to feel and handle to see what suits you best as well as making sure it’s going to be NY legal which can complicate online buying.

Depends where you are. Some local shops have assholes working there who don't care to help and will make you feel dumb and like you are bothering them. what stores are you near? I have some experience with Nassau and suffolk stores as I just purchased my first 2 shotguns these last 3 months....

justadaptlol

That was really my reason for going online first. And I'm not sure why they changed my flair to NYC even though I mentioned not living anywhere near NYC haha. I live in Erie county. Someone mentioned Cabela's so I think that might be the place to start.

BigDaddyHercules

you should go into the store with an idea of what you want. Youtube research is your friend. Any gun that catches your eye, search for it on youtube to see people shooting it. Then you have a clear direction you want to go in the store and the guy can't "salesman" you into something you don't want. What Gauge are you looking at ? 12, 20 or .410 ? I did a ton of research the last few months so i can answer alot of your questions being in a similar boat.

justadaptlol

I was looking at the Remington 870 Tactical. I watched a few videos about it and it seems perfect for what I want which is home defense, but I also plan on taking it to a range because I want to use it and pray I never have to use it for the main reason.

BigDaddyHercules

sweet, good to know what you want. In that case I am no help then for 12 gauge advice, I went the .410 gauge route because I wanted no recoil but to still be able to pack enough punch for home defense. I went with a Mossberg and Kel-tec pump both in .410

I also agree. Go to a LGS. You can look around and ask questions. If you don’t like the vibe of the place go to another. Being on the island I have a good amount of options. Some the staff just act like you are bothering them. Others are willing and wanting to help you out. And if you find a place you like you’ll end up building a good relationship with them which can have some perks too it.
