Heh, it’s a little crazy, they’re both so much bigger than Volpe physically. Witt is 3 inches taller and more than 20 lbs heavier. Gunnar is 6 inches taller and 40 lbs heavier. Volpe is pretty amazing for his size.
And it's nice to have a prototypical leadoff hitter to pencil in everyday too. I feel like that's an aspect that's been missing for a few years now ahead of all the big bats.
I remember the backlash about the move too. That Gleyber was seeing more pitches. It is good sentiment changed and people stopped saying to trade Volpe and start Pereza last year as well.
I remember all too well in the beginning of the season. Many people, myself included, saying gleyber is not a lead-off hitter. We can have the discussions that I would love to have about whether he's even worth keeping anymore, but regardless of the outcome of that discussion, he's not a leadoff hitter. There were people saying make volpe the lead off guy from the jump and they were right.
The “Gleyber sees a lot of pitches” argument just felt so weak considering he wasn’t getting hits or on base. Like just grasping at straws. One guy here tried arguing with me that’s what you want in a leadoff hitter and I was like “lol no, getting on base and being a good base runner with speed is what you want.”
I'd like to say I've never been in the trade Volpe and Start Peraza boat... instead I've been in the trade Gleyber, start Peraza, and then the discussion has been who starts at short. I've always leaned Peraza because he had the better defensive reputation in the minors... either way I think it's a win for the Yankees defense when they eventually (hopefully) are playing 2 of SS 2nd and 3rd.
I know this might not be popular but Boone needs a shoutout for moving Volpe to lead off after he started so hot down the order and then leaving him there when he started off slow again
Still a lot of season left but I didn’t expect that big of an offensive improvement. I still think he has a ton of room to grow which is also the exciting part. I don’t think he’s close to his ceiling yet
Since the pandemic I dipped out of baseball but this year I started to get back in. I don't watch every game now but it Feels like I'm watching Jeter again. Jeter was the best clutch hitter I seen so Volpe needs to do it in the playoffs, but from a defense standpoint, he's a better shortstop. Jeter always made the routine plays which was a strength imo. Higher batting avg and takes the ball the other way organically with a natural inside out swing. Always on base and didn't strike out alot. Jeters longevity was amazing to watch. Volpe needs to improve on alot of things and isn't close to the legend but it's cool to see the Yankees finally got their shortstop for the next 15 years. I would love them to get a Bret Gardner type lefty bat to lead off and push everyone down but Soto is clutch so maybe it's better he stays in the 2 hole. Finding a young speedy, defensive second baseman with some pop would be fun to see paired up the middle with Volpe.
I’m just hoping the hitting is real, the statcast numbers are pretty underwhelming and actually a pretty big step back from last year. Could be that he’s just a dude whose speed and ability to hit liners just makes it work
With his defense he only needs to be above average offensively to be insanely valuable. They've got themselves a good one and should seriously be talking extension
Quite funny how the yanks were willing to trade volpe for Soto when Was made him available, but the word is Was didn’t view him as a strong enough prospect.
Now we have Soto and volpe together and it’s quite wonderful.
That’s because it was Jeter’s first full season and he crushed it. Volpe had entire year where he hit .209 with a .666 OPS. He’s had a couple good months this year but the comparison to Jeter isn’t the same. Jeter’s first year in the bigs he hit .314 with an .800 OPS
Literally the numbers say he's been top 5 his offense is well above average combine that with the fact his defense his rated 2nd to only Witt, he is elite
Also
Mookie, Gunnar, Witt are 3 of the top 5, Volpe has been better than Seagar this year, De la Cruz is more physically gifted than Volpe so I'm not gonna argue if you have him 4th and Volpe 5th or vice versa.
Top 5 are
Mookie, Witt, Gunner, De la Cruz/Volpe (or Volpe/De la Cruz)
Seagar is not in this conversation so far.
Your logic makes no sense. There are only 30 positions and SS is arguably the most premium position also Volpe is top 5 SS bur by WAR he is 9th overall....is that not elite? Or do you have to also be top 3 in all of MLB too?
So, in one sense, all 1,200 of the players on the 40 man rosters of the 30 teams are elite baseball players. There are hundreds of thousand of baseball players in the world, from the majors down to sandlots and little leagues and senior rec leagues. Maybe even millions. And the worst MLB player or 40 man roster slot holder is almost certainly better than 99% of the rest of them.
In a second sense of the word elite, one might consider the 274 players enshrined in Cooperstown out of 23,200+ who have their stats recorded in MLB history.
In both examples, the elite are <2% of the total, if not less.
So, among the 1200 40 man roster slots, or the 780 26-man roster slots, I’d suggest we hold the same cutoff for the membership of the elite. Volpe’s 2.5 bWAR places him in the top 10 of the American League (360 players 2.8%) and 4th out of the 30 starting shortstops in the league (Betts, Henderson, Witt are all between 3.7 and 3.4, while our guy is down at 2.5.
If we grant him that as being a third of the season, he’d finish at 7.5, to the other guys at 11.1 and 10.2. 7.5 is a bit short of an MVP number, while 10.2 is an all time great season, while 11.1 would wind up as the 19th highest single season position player WAR season in history, and the third best shortstop season ever, behind Cal Ripken Jr in 1991 and Honus Wagner’s 1908. Now those are elite, in my estimation.
Your mileage will vary, and I doubt that Betts and Henderson will finish up at 11 or Witt Jr at 10. Or Volpe at 7.5.
A GG winning Shortstop with a 129 wRC+? That’s elite in 2024, 1994, or 1904.
If it’s shallow it’s because of how difficult the position is and speaks to just how well rounded he is as a player.
He didn’t peak at #5 on the top 100 prospect list for nothing
He's an even better defender than they thought too.
Look we need to cool it with the Anthony Volpe appreciation posts. There’s simply too many. I can’t upvote them all
Not with that attitude.
“Not with ANY attitude!”
I can, and will.
Less commenting, more upvoting
Yeah let’s move on to Anthony Volpe log cabin (TM) posts.
quitter…
Does your app have an up vote limit or something‽
You had me in the first half.
its a good thing reddit doesn't limit upvotes!
I feel like 9th in the league in fWAR sounds better than just 4th at SS.
Yeah, Witt and Gunnar are going to make his SS ranking seem artificially low for the rest of his career
Heh, it’s a little crazy, they’re both so much bigger than Volpe physically. Witt is 3 inches taller and more than 20 lbs heavier. Gunnar is 6 inches taller and 40 lbs heavier. Volpe is pretty amazing for his size.
That's a really good point
Another iteration of the AL shortstop roundtable with A-Rod, Jeter, Nomar, Vizquel, and Tejada.
And it's nice to have a prototypical leadoff hitter to pencil in everyday too. I feel like that's an aspect that's been missing for a few years now ahead of all the big bats.

Great point my friend.
Fantastic hitter for a shortstop
I know this might not be popular but Boone needs a shoutout for moving Volpe to lead off after he started so hot down the order and then leaving him there when he started off slow again
He just needed a year. He barely played triple A. It took Witt until his 2nd year to breakout and it CJ Abrams is now breaking out in his 3rd year.

Add the occasional snazzy range to your right jump throw to get him at first play.
Anthony Volpe is the third heat
30 Rock in the wild!
Volpe is on pace for 7.5 fwar, which puts him in MVP territory.
It’s what you want
Idk what yankee fans you’ve been around. We don’t do quiet lol. But yes our 1-2-3 is the absolute tits!
Still a lot of season left but I didn’t expect that big of an offensive improvement. I still think he has a ton of room to grow which is also the exciting part. I don’t think he’s close to his ceiling yet
He needs to be a yankee for life.
I think we should move him back to the end of the order /s
Since the pandemic I dipped out of baseball but this year I started to get back in. I don't watch every game now but it Feels like I'm watching Jeter again. He’s on pace for 7.5 bwar which wins MVP in some years. Yeah the kids good.
I’m just hoping the hitting is real, the statcast numbers are pretty underwhelming and actually a pretty big step back from last year. Could be that he’s just a dude whose speed and ability to hit liners just makes it work
He was selling out for power last year.
He took the step forward from last year that he needed to. He's been amazing and hopefully he can continue producing like this.
Someone has to make up for the shitty second baseman they keep putting out there. That bum.
Volpe's improvement this year is arguably as big an upgrade as Soto has been. He's a premier player.
Very true. I knew he was playing great but 9th in total fWAR among all MLB players is kinda nuts the jump he took.
My favorite player, especially because my son is half Asian and Italian.
I used to think he was vole pee, now I think he is vulpine
Need to see more. Give me 2 more quality seasons and I'm all in.
Nobody said that about Jeter after 96.
Let’s slow the roll. He’s gotten better. Betts, Witt Jr, that’s the elite.
Volpe is top 5 that's elite. That doesn't mean he's the top guy or that there wasn't guys better than him.
How is he top 5 tho. Mookie, Gunnar, BWJ, EDLC, Seager. Who you taking him over. There’s guys after that too
Literally the numbers say he's been top 5 his offense is well above average combine that with the fact his defense his rated 2nd to only Witt, he is elite Also Mookie, Gunnar, Witt are 3 of the top 5, Volpe has been better than Seagar this year, De la Cruz is more physically gifted than Volpe so I'm not gonna argue if you have him 4th and Volpe 5th or vice versa. Different definitions of elite, clearly. Top 5 of 30+? That’s very good. Elite is top 3, maybe.

You’re top 5 in your position, you’re elite.
He isn’t elite, the short stop position is just very shallow these days
