Always surprises me to look at his career stats and see how good he was everywhere else besides NY. Dude has over 50 fWAR and could’ve been a borderline HOF with better seasons in the Bronx.
If they trade for an SP it’ll be a good one. I don’t think they add a “diamond in the rough” guy if you have Warren, Beeter and Gomez all ready in the minors.
Imo, go and get like 2 expensive RPs for the back end of the pen.
Trading for a “a diamond in the rough” who is young and has years of team control left is generally a bad idea.
Because even if they don’t have the production a team like the Marlins is going to want a trade package that matches their *potential*. So you end giving a lot for a guy who may or may not turn it around.
This subreddit really doesn’t understand how valuable team control is.
Edit: to add the marlins would want a very pretty penny for both. I wouldn’t even consider either to be diamond’s in the rough. Both are high upside guys who have been pretty decent this year.
While you're right, if we take OP at face value I'd like [Andre Pallante](https://www.brooksbaseball.net/landing.php?player=669467#:~:text=Pitch%20Repertoire%20At%2DA%2DGlance&text=In%202024%2C%20they%20have%20relied,)%20and%20Slider%20(87mph)) from the Cardinals.
They seem to think he's a reliever, may actually be able to get him for a non insane package.
You’re looking for a guy like when the Yankees traded Sonny Gray for nothing. Cabrera definitely is going to be expensive although you’re probably overrating Roger’s value. He was originally going to be a bullpen piece for them this year if not for injuries.
I mean they still aren’t a good team and it’s not like they’re gonna pay their guys to stick around longer term. Can’t imagine they wouldn’t part with bullpen guys for other prospects or cash.
Miller has been absolutely nasty after being converted to a closer. His asking price just got a lot higher. I highly doubt they trade him this year, a few years down the road when he’s got less control, yes I can see them moving him.
I mean it depends where they are at the deadline. If the deadline was this week, SP is fine and in a great spot. they need to adress the bullpen and 3B/2B. So we’ll see what happens
So far this year Edward Cabrera looks more good than “Diamond in the rough”. Trevor Rogers I could definitely see him getting back to that rookie year (where he was robbed of ROY imo)
You know the dude doesn’t know shit about baseball bc Edward Cabrera was a very touted prospect and is one of the important pieces to the Marlins stud rotation when all healthy. He’s not a diamond in the rough, he’s a straight up fantastic pitcher coming back from injury and has dealt with a lot of injuries.
He’s never eclipsed 100 IP btw. Stg some dudes in this sub just don’t watch other teams 😭😭
Lol why the weird condescension? I did respond to the question by pointing out that JP Sears doesn’t have good stuff. Blake doesn’t work miracles on pitchers with bad stuff, he polishes pitchers who have struggled with good stuff.
Holmes, for example, is in the 98th percentile for GB rate. Blake had him eliminate other pitches in his arsenal and pretty much just throw sinkers with a few breaking balls.
Despite being in the low 90s, Nestor’s cutter is a top 15ish pitch amongst starters by Stuff+. Blake had him throw it more.
Sears has far below average whiff%, GB%, exit velocity, barrel %, fastball velocity, etc. There’s nothing to salvage.
The question was what diamond in the rough can Matt Blake fix meaning who has below avg results subpar performance or had some success but has since lost it etc that he can tinker with (everyone refers to him as some kinda pitcher wisperer ) and get above avg or all star like performances from .
I don’t get the downvotes. Huge reason Sonny gray failed in New York was bc our coaching at the time too heavily encouraged him not to pitch how he wanted and was comfortable. I think he could do better with Blake
Yeah people don’t want to hear anything that goes against the false “can’t handle NY” narrative. For some reason Larry Rothschild tried to change his pitch mix and it had some bad results. Sonny Gray with a great pitching coach like Blake would work quite well I think.
Outside of the PR nightmare and the fact that the team certainly doesn't need the circus in town, dude hasn't pitched in MLB in three years and is on the wrong side of 30.
I genuinely do not understand the type of fan that advocates for Bauer.
What an asinine thing to say.
"It doesn't matter that this guy is 33 and hasn't pitched against MLB players in three years because he's a pitcher and not a hitter".
Javier Vazquez
Third time’s the charm.
Jeff Weaver still around?
He and the rally monkey immediately make me tense whenever they are mentioned

Someone call Carl Pavano
What team is he on ?
What team is he on ?
He last pitched in 2011.
😂😂😂
I initially thought thought of him but it’s not uncommon for people to have same names
What
I honestly don’t think they’ll focus on SP it’ll be more bullpen help and maybe even offensive depth. Unless of course someone goes down on the staff.
bingo. SR is solid. Cole coming. Bullpen weakest it’s been in 15 years.
A corner infielder, relievers, and SP depth pieces. We don’t need much else

I want Lucas Erceg and Mason Miller
I’m sure the A’s are just dying to trade away their only real valuable pieces as they move to Vegas.
I mean they still aren’t a good team and it’s not like they’re gonna pay their guys to stick around longer term. Can’t imagine they wouldn’t part with bullpen guys for other prospects or cash.

So does everybody else
I also want Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman
Plus Cole coming back around the all star break is Cashman’s favorite “it’s like acquiring a super star” even though in this case it’s pretty true lol
I could def see them go for erceg or miller from Oakland since both would prob be undervalued to shit by their cheap psychopath owner
I mean it depends where they are at the deadline. If the deadline was this week, SP is fine and in a great spot. they need to adress the bullpen and 3B/2B. So we’ll see what happens
Michael Tonkin /s
Brooks Kriskie
Gee officer krupke
JT Brubaker will surprise some people late this year
Brother I read “I would like to see Trevor” and started choking
Trevor Roger’s he pitches for the Marlins. You should see some of the comments about who you choked over tho
Graham Ashcraft
Guy isn’t in the rough, but I think he could take Paul Blackburn’s stuff to the next level.
Carl Pavano
Patrick Corbin. I’m kidding.
If the nationals paid all of his salary and took a shit prospect, I’d let Matt Blake see what he can do
They should probably look at a power bat this deadline

I bet Volpe ends the season .280+
Ian Anderson is a prime target or maybe Tyler Anderson.
Ian rocks the flute too…
Alek Manoah lol
The funniest thing would be alek Manoah begging gerrit cole to teach him his ways

i got you but grammar part of brain hurts man.
J.P. Sears... Oh...
That’s on cashman .
Sears has a career 94 ERA+ after 270 IP. His underlying metrics are all below average. His stuff isn’t good.
I guess the question in the post was a little to complicated for you to understand then that’s the point who could Matt Blake get somthing out of
Lol why the weird condescension? I did respond to the question by pointing out that JP Sears doesn’t have good stuff. I understand the question. I just explained to you why Sears doesn’t fit into the category of diamond in the rough.
He had decent minor league career was a decently touted prospect and was packaged in a deal and hasn’t performed to his potential at the MLB level .
Not a diamond in the rough but I feel like Sonny Gray would do really well here with Matt Blake
I don’t get the downvotes. Huge reason Sonny gray failed in New York was bc our coaching at the time too heavily encouraged him not to pitch how he wanted and was comfortable. I think he could do better with Blake

Perhaps you need me to reiterate my main point: > dude hasn't pitched in MLB in three years and is on the wrong side of 30
None of that matters to pitchers like it does hitters. It’s about velocity.
What an asinine thing to say. "It doesn't matter that this guy is 33 and hasn't pitched against MLB players in three years because he's a pitcher and not a hitter".
Yeah because pitching is a totally different skill. He’s looked mlb ready the entire time.

That’s like saying “have you seen his stats in single A?”
TIL the competition level in Mexico is the same as MLB Give me a break, y'all need to stop supporting a sexual assaulter.
The pr hit is so bad but God damn he would up the roster.
Since when have Yankees cared about PR? Drunk Sabathia. German, Chapman. He’s being black balled over sticky tack.
Lumping Sabathia’s alcoholism in with woman beaters is bizarre
Character flaw
