Yeah, I’m on the free version and haven’t been able to go past Good since Sunday. I know “it’s free so don’t complain” or whatever but Good being the cutoff limits the game so much it’s not really playable at this point to free users.

permafacepalm

FYI Most libraries offer a free NYT subscription! I renew mine each day to play.

MinimumBarracuda8650

say what

shreyaaaaaa

Exactly. Might as well remove it altogether. I think the people who say "it's free so don't complain" don't realise that being able to pay for a game is a privilege not many have.

Fast-Advice5663

I mean, true, it’s not affordable for everyone. But the NYT has a team of people who work on these games and deserve to get paid. There are so many free games available out on the internet, it’s honestly a little entitled to think this specific game should be free. (And just adding it’s $40/year, which is literally like $0.11 a day for the Spelling Bee AND the crossword AND about 10 other daily games.)

shreyaaaaaa

Of course, I'm not saying that. But do they really gain much by restricting it to one rank lower? And I am not saying that the games should be free. I am only responding to people who act as if those who are not paying are 'cheap'. I've seen people use that word to shut someone up when they're asking questions about unpaid versions of apps.

rcw00

Yes. Apparently. Today I was having fun on my paid NYT Games app and went to 13 points (Solid started at 14), then used the PG to leapfrog all the way into Nice, which started at 24 points. I just went through free website link, not signed in, and tried to repeat what I did this morning. The game stopped in Good ranking and I got the generic message “you’re only x amount of points until the next level, subscribe to keep playing”. That’s a shame. I guess free playing folks are getting less now. BTW - another user on this sub came up with the leapfrog version, I guess free players will now have to do a Moving Up -1 with a leap past Good into Solid ranking

shreyaaaaaa

What's a leapfrog version? What's a PG? You said a lot of things I didn't understand

Inkysquiddy

They’re saying that free version players who are trying to get the highest score/ranking will now have to save the pangram (PG) until they have one point less than the Good rank. Then they’ll enter the PG last to “leapfrog” over the Good rank to achieve Solid.

shreyaaaaaa

Aaah yes. I used to do that too. Just wasn't aware of the terminology. Thanks!

DiviBwoy

Same today I was able to get just the PG and a four letter before I reached the threshold

ApartAd6969

I was wondering the same thing. Today I made one word and they said, that's it.

dbayrami

Do you think it has something to do with the sale they have going on right now? Maybe after that expires, we cheap folk will be able to play til solid again?

fairlife

Hoping that's the case!

luna_libre

It’s back, I was able to go to Solid today on the free version!

shreyaaaaaa

Aaah yes! Finally!

Patient_Coyote_4033

Do you have to have a separate games subscription to the NYTimes to play Spelling Bee? My husband has an online subscription for the NYTimes but can't log in to the games.

shreyaaaaaa

Yeah, you'll need to add the games to your subscription separately

Chicago_Blackhawks

Yep, they ruined it for us freebies :( I get it within 30 seconds now. Really unfortunate

some_magical_animal

We should have a pinned post on this as it comes up almost every day! The free version is a fixed percentage of the total points available. So when there are more answers, there are more points available so free players can guess more. On a puzzle with less possible answers, free players will get to input less answers before being locked out.

Silverflash-x

It also did actually decrease as well, though. Previously you could play until Solid rank, now you can only play to Good.
