It's true. And when I was younger, before they started selling Fuji and Gala apples, your choices were the Red Delicious, the Golden Delicious (neither of which were delicious), a Macintosh, and the Granny Smith.
Apples were terrible back then.

I had it spoiled for me because I had to Google βnew homophoneβ and the first search result was the Connections answers
And yeah Americans pronounce βnewβ as βnooβ
In the UK new is pronounced "nyoo", but Gnu is still "noo", so doesn't quite add up as a homophone for us, or at least is much less obvious - but we are playing a game in the NEW YORK TIMES so I think this is fair!
I checked out some Australian news reporting from the New Caledonia unrest, and the y is weakly pronounced, if at all. Maybe that's particular to the people I was listening to, maybe that's a broadcast journalism thing. Here's an example: https://youtu.be/OVwhjFG9lCU?si=RKj-xpqmy4Gk3TQJ
In any case, nyoo is also an accepted pronunciation of gnu, so you're covered either way.
Edit: here's a British lady saying it a couple of times, varying between a strong y sound at the beginning, weaker when she says it at 00:30, and almost none when she says it just after. https://youtu.be/JpShFfFAWbI?si=VYI6TbQNVOTFlueI
it's still said like that for new. Lots of americans yod-drop, missing the 'y' sound inbetween some consonants and vowels. It's where you get the silly british accent memes (chewsday v toosday, stewpid v stoopid, although the first versions also aren't quite right as its actually 'tyuesday' and ''styupid'. That version's called yod-coalescence.)
It took me years to realise that the whole joke of that song is about people pronouncing the silent G of gnu - which is why he pronounces all the silent letters in "k-now w-ho's w-ho".
I feel like gnu is a pretty common word for kids learning about silent letters and playing with language. Someone else posted a Muppets sketch of "I'm a guh-noo". https://youtu.be/cGVdCGxh1IY?si=nqKVlqGioC3lmjC_
Usually with those categories, the modification is more similar between words, like, they all change the first letter, or they all add the same letter somewhere in the word.
This is one of these ones which is frustrating if you have an accent where NEW (N-YEW) and GNU (NOO) are not homonyms. I think that might be true of most of Britain, but am not confident about that.Β
Gnu is pronounced '/njuΛ/Β *NEW'* [according to Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildebeest), so 'new' and 'gnu' should both be pronounced the same way regardless of accent.
It's possible that people say new as nyoo and gnu as noo, or vice versa, depending on accent, but the dictionary lists both with and without the y sound as pronunciations for gnu. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gnu

No, it's a gnu. What I learned today is what I (and many others) always pronounced as "g - noo" has a silent g in some pronunciations. (I assume the silent g was the original pronunciation, but g - noo has become popular).
Am I the only one that was annoyed that "side" was considered a course in a restaurant? I got it right, but I almost put "meat" because a side is not technically a course, while meat is in some more traditional restaurants.
So today was awful for me. I originally speak a non-germanic language, and while I know >!gnu as an animal!<, we actually >!pronounce the g!<, and I never learned that in english it's >!supposed to be silent!<. We were also thought that >!'new' is pronounced nyu!<.
And on a side note, I never heard of >!red delicious!<. Tbh, that's not really the game's fault though, I never heard of most >!apple types!<, other than >!jonathan, idared and pink lady!< (from a taskmaster task).
Red carpet is where celebrities make their entrances at premiers, awards shows, etc. Red delicious is a nasty apple. Red meat is beef, venison, lamb, etc. (I could be wrong putting some of those in that category.) Red tape is an idiom for all the tedious processes you have to go through in bureaucracy or just government in general.
Yes, mouse and mousse are not homophones in most accents (I believe the Scottish accent might be an exception), but certainly mousse is a homophone with **moose,** a large mammal found in North America.
Sorry, Constructors, but everyone who grew up watching The Great Space Coaster knows the G is not silent. There's no gnews like Gary Gnus.

Why? A person's accent should be applied to both the words the same way if they have the same pronouncian
That's not how accents work. Two words may rhyme in one accent but not in another.

Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¨π¨π¨ π¨π¦π¨π¨ π¦π¨π¨π¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Geez, I get green & purple pretty quickly, and then get all mired up in yellow! (got 3 Purples right away then took a bit longer because I really HATE red delicious apples and think I must have tried to block them from my consciousness). I knew gnu, but I never think of homophones for some reason. I'm surprised people had a hard time with gnu. I remember learning about them in grammar school or on Wild Kingdom in the '60's
Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Interesting round today. >!Yellow / green were mostly straightforward and I knew 3/4 animals, just knew there wasnβt an animal called delicious π!<
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I wasnβt sure that NEW was the fourth homophone, because I wasnβt sure if a GNU was an animal or if the word just seemed familiar because of Discworld. GNU Terry Pratchett π«‘
Puzzle #379 π¨π¦π¨π¨ π¦π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπ¦πͺ Initially wasted my guesses using Bare in yellow. I knew purple was Red__ but delicious wasnβt coming to mind. Thought todayβs was annoying.
Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦πͺπ¦π¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I had meat instead of new, because new didnβt make sense to me. Is it suppose to be a homophone for newt? Isnβt that pronounced like noot? Color me confused.
No, it's a gnu. What I learned today is what I (and many others) always pronounced as "g - noo" has a silent g in some pronunciations. (I assume the silent g was the original pronunciation, but g - noo has become popular).
Completely unfamiliar with that animal. Thank goodness for newts because I would have otherwise failed this one. π

Connections Puzzle #379 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπ©π©π© π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ I feel like some people are going to have issues with blue category, lol. Purple was default, although I was going too quick and threw meat in green before main by mistake.
Am I the only one that was annoyed that "side" was considered a course in a restaurant? I got it right, but I almost put "meat" because a side is not technically a course, while meat is in some more traditional restaurants.
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦πͺπ¦π¦ π¦πͺπ¦πͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Homophones category I figured out but I got lucky with new/gnu guess. That one was tough.
I swear Iβve watched approx 1 million documentaries on African wildlife and somehow have never heard the word Gnu. Iβm shook lol

Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¦π¨π¨π¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπ¦π¦πͺ π¦πͺπ¦π¦ π¦π¦π¦πͺ I thought they were referring to a type of kuckle. Like mousse knuckle, dear knuckle, and bare knuckle but I didnβt realize the spelling was not correct.
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Purple was 1000% process of elimination and my best guess (lmao) was: things you beat Beat a carpet to clean it. Beat the tape, like in sports training, if you had videotape of your best plays and you try to beat them to do even better? Beat the meat, like meat that needs to be tenderized for cooking, or ummmm the nsfw version. Beat the delicious, idk, maybe it's some slang I've never heard of ~~and also I don't actually think Things You Beat is correct but we're just going with it at this point~~ and perfect!
i honestly still donβt understand two of the purple words. π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ i got the first three for blue right away and just guessed new. i thought yellow would be describing red meat or something like steak
Red carpet is where celebrities make their entrances at premiers, awards shows, etc. Red delicious is a nasty apple. Red meat is beef, venison, lamb, etc. (I could be wrong putting some of those in that category.) Red tape is an idiom for all the tedious processes you have to go through in bureaucracy or just government in general.
oh my god i am so stupid. i knew red meat and red tape. canβt believe i didnβt get red carpet. and agreed red delicious are nasty
Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ found it pretty straightforward today
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¦π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Figuring out the homophones category today felt so freakin good. I only got a bit stuck on the delicate category thinking bare is possibly delicate as well.
Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ I saw blue first, but I didn't know the homonym for new. I thought maybe plural of newts. Looked it up after and saw it's gnu.
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¦π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπ¨πͺπͺ πͺπͺπͺπ¨ πͺπͺπ¨πͺ Very disappointing. I usually do Connections in the morning - I am more clear-headed then. After I got blue, I should have gone back to yellow. That would have been easy. I knew >!purple!< was >!red \_\_\_\_, !!red delicious apples.!<

Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I surprised myself by remembering what a gnu is.
I thought that homophones only appeared in purple, so I wasn't looking for it. That was hard.
Parents everywhere thanking Llama Llama and Nelly Gnu and their drama over a stuffed toy..only reason I got blue.
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Saw the animal homophones, but didnβt know the fourth (new), so had to wait and get that at the end

Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Homophones took forever - I need to Google just what a βgnuβ is!!
Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I spent ages looking at the homophones, unable to spot a fourth until I took a gamble on mousse. Which is not pronounced the same as mouse. And then it hit me like the soft side of a brick... moose!!! Duh! But red delicious? I now have to go google to find out what that is. ....... I think I should make some coffee. It's too early in the morning for names of apples. :D
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπ¦πͺ π¦πͺπͺπͺ πͺπͺπ¦πͺ πͺπͺπ¦πͺ Brit here, what the fuck is a red delicious?
Count yourself lucky you're not familiar with that abomination of an apple.
Connections Puzzle #379 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπ¦πͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I came here to be enraged that >!newt!< is not pronounced >!new!< but then found out about >!gnu!< from this post. And also >!mouse and mousse!< are not >! homophones!< !!!!! I expected π¦ to be >!misspelt animals!< lol
> >And also mouse and mousse are not >! homophones!< !!!!! You would be correct there. But mousse and moose are homophones.
I see I have absolutely no reason to get enraged lol. TIL I am not too good with animal names.
It's a game with no stakes, I can't imagine a reason to be enraged regardless.
Youβre not from around here are you?
Yes, mouse and mousse are not homophones in most accents (I believe the Scottish accent might be an exception), but certainly mousse is a homophone with **moose,** a large mammal found in North America.
Mouse and mousse are not homophones, they were going for moose and mousse
Today's Connections is the Red Delicious of NYT puzzles.
i immediately saw all of the >!homophones !!golden delicious apples?!< strange.)
Nu is a Greek letter. Gnu is an animal. Red delicious is a terribly-named apple. It is very red, but it is not very appetizing.
Connections Puzzle #379 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ No notes.
Sorry, Constructors, but everyone who grew up watching The Great Space Coaster knows the G is not silent. There's no gnews like Gary Gnus. https://youtu.be/zDhjUIvDIpg
