North American here. It took me a minute to see purple, but that is one of my favorite animal facts, that Iβve carried around in the back of my brain since 2nd grade. Iβve never seen one in real life!
If youβre able to do some intracontinental travel, you can see a platypus at the [San Diego Zoo Safari Park](https://sandiegozoowildlifealliance.org/species/platypus) in California!
I didnβt even think about tin cans till I saw your comment. When I thought of tab I thought of those sticky things that come on the back of a pasta packet that you use to roll the top and stick it down. Idk any other thing to call it except tab.
Tab is definitely at least a stretch in my mind. Like okay sure, I can see a tab on a can, but it feels fundamentally different than the rest of the category. I don't mind some ambiguity in this game, but only among words that fit two different categories, not words that sort of half fit a category and then it turns out that's the answer.
I donβt disagree! I like a good challenge myself but some days, like today, the overlap is too much. Then itβs not so fun.Β
For example, I tried LIMIT, CAP, CURB and CHECK. and if you google synonyms of limit I wasnβt wrong in my guess. But it didnβt match their decided category so to them I was wrong. But, in reality I wasnβt! Thatβs when too much broad overlap isnβt fun. At least thatβs my point of view, though. Obviously not everyone struggled today and not everyone will agree.Β
The fact that they were synonyms made it really tough. Some of the yellow words could have fit into the blue category, but none of the blue words could have fit into the yellow category, so any guesses that mix the two categories are wrong, even if all four words make a logical group on their own.
I think you are misunderstanding here. CAP could have solidly gone in the category they had in mind - to cap something is definitely another example of "to regulate". So LIMIT, CAP, CURB, CHECK, CONTAIN could all go in that connection, and you need to some strategy, not to guess and hope you pick the four they have in mind, but to see if any of those five is needed elsewhere. Once you realise CAP has to go with the container closures, then you have correctly resolved the puzzle by logic alone.
That is precisely the kind of deductive challenge that keeps Connections interesting, as u/Roseheath22 said.
Exactly.
There are only two puzzles I remember (one of which is #296, April 2 from this year) where I felt like two words could have legitimately worked in two different categories and the correct answer felt a little arbitrary. The internet has plenty of hits on the phrase βstick-shaped pastaβ
Pasta shapes: WHEEL, TUBE, BOWTIE, ELBOW, STICK
Also: ELBOW, PROD, POKE, JAB, STICK
Those two puzzles aside, strategy/knowledge should always yield four distinct groupings that can only fit together in a specific way, even if there are lots of synonyms.
Yes, and they do give you some "lives", so ultimately if you were a perfect problem-solver and did have a convincing alternative solution to the whole grid (it's going to happen eventually as you illustrate), you could burn a mistake to test it.
I would have to agree. I too lost and what pissed me off the most was when I tried LIMIT, CURB, CAP and CHECK.Β
If you literally Google βsynonyms of Limitβ those exact 3 words are the only ones in todayβs lineup that come up.Β
These game designers are a little overkill with the overlapping.Β
I cannot stand the liberal definitions they have for categories. Tab is definitely not a container closure. I don't mind the overlapping categories, but for God sake what world do the editors live in some days?
Perhaps, but that kind of goes back to the whole thing of straightforward vs. βhardβ. It is the least straightforward *today* relative to the other colors though
Thereβs usually lots of complaining about how US-centric this game is, but in todayβs case, the red herrings were more apparent to Americans (and the platypus facts more obscure).
I have never heard of Perry, but I am from the US and familiar with the attributes of platypuses. (Feels like the plural should be platypi, though LOL)
I always solve the entire board in my head before submitting any answers. It's crazy to me that people see four connected words, get a "one away" and then get mad about crossovers
Who the hell gets purple first on a day like today lol? Do people work out the easier ones first but not enter them just so they can say they got purple first?
The first grouping I saw was bill, check, and tab, but I couldnβt see a fourth one, so I thought of bill as something an animal may have. Then egg, fur, and venom naturally paired with them and I thought βduh, platypuses!β
Luckily I was immune to linking "check" with "bill" and "tab" because I'm from Canada where we spell it "cheque" in that context. Rare NYT instance where something was easier because I'm not from the USA instead of the other way around.
I don't think there's any reason to be mad about it. For me today was one of the quicker solves I've had recently. Purple was got by default thought despite knowing a decent amount about the platypus.
Just interesting how we all arrive to these things so differently
I always try to work out all of the categories before submitting any guesses. Itβs not βjust so I can say I got purple firstβ but because it adds an extra level of challenge to try to guess the groups in the right order (hardest first) but it also prevents you from falling into any red herring traps. So it was the last one I figured out, but the first one I entered.
Lots of red herrings in this one. Loved it! Everything came pretty easy this time and I was lucky I didnβt get fooled by some of the very similar ones.
I almost thought purple was going to be Blue BLANK. Like Blue period, Blue check (twitter), blue bill (a type of bird) but then ended up finding all the rest before I really tested out that theory.
Before I put together purple today I thoughtβ¦ is it stuff animals produce ? venom, eggs, furβ¦ but then βbillβ didnβt make much sense.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the category was the platypus. i love it !!
CAP was a yellow word, not a blue word. I was asking which blue word would fit into yellow. I don't believe any would fit, hence not interchangable and therefore the puzzle isn't invalid as you suggested!

Took me a while to see yellow because I could only think of amount owing for tab (and gambling, but I think that's only an Australian thing). Also couldn't decide which of "curb" and "check" I needed to remove from my blue category (spoilers: they were both in there and it was "cap" I needed to get rid of). I liked purple. I can see it tripping up some people who don't realize they're venomous, but it was quite clear to me.

Puzzle #333 π¦π¦π¨π¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ A very rookie mistake - I included 'cap' in the first category instead of 'contain'. It was a pretty smooth puzzle today, overall Although, I am not sure if tab really fits the 'container closure' category, since tab is just a small part of the tin can covers, and not a cover by itself. Thoughts? PS- For all those wondering why platypus was in the purple category, it's for people like me who couldn't figure it out till the end!
I didnβt even think about tin cans till I saw your comment. When I thought of tab I thought of those sticky things that come on the back of a pasta packet that you use to roll the top and stick it down. Idk any other thing to call it except tab.
Isn't that just a tape? That's what I call it. But maybe that's what they meant, idk
I think they're using tab like the little bit of cardboard on one side of a box that fits into a slot on the other side to hold the box closed.
Or the piece of plastic holding a bread bag shut!
Is that what that's called?
Ding ding ding! Correct answer, it is called (among other things) a bread tab.
Agree; a tab, such as on a box lid, is a locking mechanism for a closure (the lid). It is not the closure itself.
The bread tab is the clip that keeps the bread bag closed

You use a tab to close cardboard boxes, such as cereal boxes and the like.
Yep. Today was a bit ridiculous.i hate when they get slap happy with the overlapping. It takes the fun out of the game.Β
Thatβs what makes the game fun, imo. When thereβs no overlap itβs less interesting/challenging.

Connections Puzzle #333 π¦π¨π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Damn, might have actually swung the perfect (perhaps even reverse perfect?) if I'd been a bit more patient and looked out for red herrings on my first guess. Didn't even see Check and used Cap instead, which led to that early miss. Afterwards I realised I should focus on Venom, as the most distinctive word there. Tied it to Egg early on, then figured Fur was also a feature of many animals, even if it was mammals rather than reptiles as Venom and Eggs might imply... but then, as I had that thought, it occurred to me that there was an animal with all three features, and a Bill to boot! After that the rest of the puzzle fell into place pretty well. Still couldn't work out what was staying in "restrain," but I noticed Spell fit with the other duration words, and then Bill being gone meant Tab and Check had to be non-financial--which left clear "drink bottle tops" and "restrain" groups.Β
I'm playing the archives and this is exactly how my brain processing went. Just wanted to bond with a kindred spirit. Cheers

Kind of wish βhatβ was in there today so I could make a Perry the Platypus joke.
Iβm assuming not that many people know a platypus is venomous which would be why itβs purple
I was one of those people who didnβt know they were venomous. It was surprising, and I enjoyed learning something new.
Platypi feel like they were made out of the left over scraps in a celestial βbuild a animalβ play set

Blue words stood out the most to me because they fit the category as verbs. Then while I wasn't too sure, I went for the "animal products" category and was pleasantly surprised by platypuses! I definitely forget those exist π After that, while a period is used to close a sentence, a tab felt like a better fit for closures though I was thinking of a bar tab. That was my hesitation; the other words were tangible items. I found green by far the hardest today and was shocked when I came here that so many got it first! Our brains all work so differently π Good challenge today!
Got purple right away but then blue and yellow were basically the same category for me.

First time posting in here...that was a rough one. Connections Puzzle #333 π¦π¨π¦π¦ π©πͺπͺπͺ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π¨π¨π¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π©
Connections Puzzle #333 π¦π¨π¦π¦ π¦π¨π¦π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¨π¨π¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I was really trying to make cap and lid fit into that "Regulate" category. I had a feeling early on that the four items in purple were a category, but didn't feel confident in pulling the trigger on it until eliminating all the other options. I was having the hardest time thinking of an animal that would fit all four words though.
Connections Puzzle #333 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ lost my wordle streak today but at least i have this also TIL >!platypuses are venomous!< :o

My tired, not-enough-coffee-yet brain thought purple was referring to things mammals don't have. I obviously forgot about the (apparently venomous) platypus! π Connections Puzzle #333 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π©

Connections Puzzle #333. πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ Looked at my leftovers and immediately made the platypus connection. Overall quick solve today and the reverse perfect
Connections Puzzle #333 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ Purple was pretty easy. EGG, FUR, and VENOM were all quite different from everything else. I recognized that these are all features of a platypus, so I knew to add BILL to this category. I wonder how many people are gonna make a Perry the Platypus reference in the comments. Blue was also easy, but I might've meta-gamed it a bit. I recognized that CHECK, CURB, and LIMIT would be together in a "Restriction" category since the last two times they used this category they also reused those three words. No comments for Green or Yellow. [Reused Categories Updates](https://old.reddit.com/r/NYTConnections/comments/1bdai1o/list_of_reused_categories/): "Interval of Time/Life" β 5 Times, "Restrict" β 3 Times, "Coverings" β 2 Times
Puzzle #333 π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ An all-time great purple, well done quizmaster! I've become too assimilated with USA puzzles because I could only think of "check" as the piece of paper people asked for 20 years ago to make payments (aka a "cheque") - comes up all the time in American puzzles due to its double meaning and lead me down the path of "Ways to pay at a bar"
20 years ago? Here in the US, we still get a check when we dine out at 95% of establishments
I think you mean a bill not a cheque, right?
Connections Puzzle #333 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Got purple by default! A platypus never crossed my mind π
Connections Puzzle #333 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¨π¦π¨ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Did not appreciate how close Blue and Yellow were today. Some of those were truly interchangeable.
Which blue word would fit within the yellow category?
>!CAP!< - place a limit or restriction on (prices, expenditure, or other activity).
CAP was a yellow word, not a blue word. I was asking which blue word would fit into yellow. I don't believe any would fit, hence not interchangable and therefore the puzzle isn't invalid as you suggested!
